  • Judy Collins, The Indigo Girls and Rufus Wainright To Perform At Tanglewood

Musical legends Judy Collins, The Indigo Girls and Rufus Wainwright will perform together for one night and one night only on Aug. 30 at Tanglewood.

Collins is a Grammy award winning singer and songwriter who started her career with her debut album A Maid of Constant Sorrow in 1961. She was a huge part of the Greenwich Village Folk movement in the 60’s, a time in music history that inspired other musicians like Joni Mtchel and Leonord Cohen.

Not only is she an accomplished musician with 55 albums to her name, but Collins is also an avid social activist and represents UNICEF today. In 2008, a group of contemporary artists released Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins. One of those artists was Canadian American singer and songwriter Rufus Wainwright.

Wainwright was raised in Montreal but later moved to New York City in 1996. Two years later he released his debut studio album Rufus Wainwright. Throughout his career he’s collaborated with other artists such as David Byrne, Joni Mitchell and Mark Ronson. His most recent 2023 album Folkacracy is a record full of folk duets as well as solo pieces exposing Wainwright’s melodic vocals.

The Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, have been performing together since their highschool days. Last summer Greta Gerwig’s Barbie re-popularised their iconic song “Closer to Fine.” Their 2020 album Long Look is a reflection of their careers and childhoods.

These folk-rock legends will take to the Koussevitzky Music Shed, at the annual concert series Tanglewood located in Western Massachusetts. Tanglewood is the summer residence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra who performs throughout the summer.

  • Alt-Rock Stars, Cowboy Junkies, Kick-off US Tour With Stops in Buffalo and Geneva

Country and folk rock band Cowboy Junkies has announced a new tour for the fall of 2024 that will begin with two stops in New York, one in Buffalo and the other in Geneva. The tour is in support of their most recent album, Such Ferocious Beauty, which is the band’s first release of new material in five years.

Formed just over the border in Toronto, Cowboy Junkies have been actively making and performing music for almost 40 years. Comprised of bassist Alan Anton, songwriter/guitarist Michael Timmins, drummer Peter Timmins and vocalist Margo Timmins, the quartet has recorded a total of 16 live albums and five live albums. Moreover, with Michael, Peter and Margo all being siblings, the band’s many years of unwavering togetherness only makes sense.

Cowboy Junkies’ first album, Whites Off Earth Now!!, in 1986, kicked off their careers and was then followed up in 1988 by the now-Platinum The Trinity Season. In a world where many bands chase whatever sounds are trending, the Junkies have stayed their course, maintaining the low-impact excavation of melody and evocative language that gave them so many fans in the first place.

    About Cowboy Junkies

The band’s newest outing, Such Ferocious Beauty, is vintage Cowboy Junkies and another dimension from the lo-fi Canadian band comprised of, well, family. As a result the album is a tangle of sonic textures, ruminating on aging, losing parents, facing mortality and creating space for one’s life in the midst of the ruin that comes from merely living. “Mike has never shied away from the darker, harder and sometimes uglier realities of our human condition,” Margo Timmins explained of the band’s singular focus, “nor has he shied from its beauty. Thankfully, with one comes the other.”

Michael Timmins, the oldest, is the chief architect, songwriter and guitarist, who works with Margo on sculpting the emotional planes and vocal performances before bringing in younger brother Peter on drums and lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass to create the soundscapes that have made Cowboy Junkies a band that defies categories. Alternative? Rock? Americana? Roots? Perhaps the answer is a simple “yes.” Hence, the churning beauty builds on all those things, evoking the best of a group that’s evolved over three and a half decades. Michael adds, “This record is connected to All That Reckoning. I see our recent work in a cycle: Reckoning, Ghosts and Such Ferocious Beauty. They were all done in very violent and tumultuous times. The violent side is so much a part of our society now—not just the physical, but the way we relate to each other. It’s hard to escape.”

    Inside The Band

Whether drawing on a pop culture reference like a quote culled from Mike Tyson or mining Greek mythology, there’s an ease and fluidity to how Michael draws songs together. For the sinewy “Mike Tyson (Here It Comes),” he employs a high-plains spaghetti Western tension that marries a nervy acoustic strum and tympani rolls to a creeping bassline, while “Circe & Penelope” deploys a wheezy fiddle and an acoustic guitar with its strings more flicked than strummed.

“I love the blunt reality of this song,” Margo offers. “I love the two women’s strength and realistic view of the situation. They have a great love for their men, but also this discontent. The image of these two women waiting for their men to return but getting on with the work that needs to be done and living their lives as strong women is truly empowering and reflects upon many of the women I know today.”

“The expectations and responsibilities of what we all do—it’s a big part of this. We’re still amazed that we’re doing this, but the longer [we have], the more fun it’s become. We don’t take it for granted,” said Michael. “We do what we do,” Margo agrees, “and it feels right for all of us. After 30-plus years of playing together, the band and its music are more important to us than ever. The music we make brings each of us a great sense of contentment, a knowing of place and a sense of doing what we were meant to do.”

Dogs In A Pile began in Asbury Park, at the heart of the Jersey Shore. Guitarist Jimmy Law and drummer Joe Babick teamed up with Berklee graduates Sam Lucid (bass), Jeremy Kaplan (keyboard), and Brian Murray (guitar). Together, the quintet has made a name for itself for their eclectic mix of funk, rock, and psychedelia. With live shows that build improvised psychedelic soundscapes, the band has amassed a large cult following, known as the Dog Pound.

2024 marks a monumental year for Dogs In A Pile. Throughout the Summer, the quintet has headlined multiple shows and concerts in Colorado, and toured with Andy Frasco & The U.N. and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. To cap off this busy year of touring, Dogs In A Pile will play four nights at Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs. Located in Downtown Saratoga Springs, the 400+ person venue is a staple of Upstate New York tours. Over the years, the venue has hosted everyone from Ghostface Killah to Blues Traveler. Among Putnam Place’s many shows was a NYE 2023 show by Dogs In A Pile. The show was a display of the band’s musical ability, debuting four new songs, and playing a number of improvised psychedelic jams.

  • ‘Bach Again’ Concludes the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival’s 26th Season

Following the resounding success of last year’s program, the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival has announced the return of “Bach Again,” an evening dedicated to the timeless works of Johann Sebastian Bach. This performance will take place on Tuesday, August 20 at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown, NY, and concludes this summer’s Cooperstown Music Festival season.

Founded in 1999 by flutist Linda Chesis, the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival has been bringing world-class chamber music performances to the Cooperstown area for over 25 years. The festival has featured performances by the American, Juilliard, St. Lawrence, Jupiter, and Jasper String Quartets, Stefon Harris, Bill Charlap, Kurt Elling, Simone Dinnerstein, Mark O’Connor, John Pizzarelli, the Sonia Olla Flamenco Dance Company, and many more. Concerts are held in venues across Cooperstown, including the grand Otesaga Hotel, The Farmers’ Museum, and Christ Church (the church of author James Fenimore Cooper).

    What is “Bach Again?”

To cap off this summer’s successful series, “Bach Again,” an evening dedicated to the timeless works of Johann Sebastian Bach, will be making its return on August 20 at 7 p.m. Violinist Rachell Ellen Wong, a rising star in the world of Baroque music and winner of a prestigious Avery Fisher Grant, will join an equally illustrious ensemble of musicians, including cellist Wolfram Koessel, harpsichordist Bradley Brookshire, and flutist Linda Chesis, Festival Founder and Artistic Director, for a concert exploring Bach’s rich body of work.

Described by the legendary pianist Glenn Gould as “the greatest architect of sound who ever lived,” J. S. Bach is arguably the most influential and most beloved composer in the history of Western classical music. Intensely personal yet profoundly universal, his music has inspired devotion in countless generations of musicians and listeners alike.

The concert on August 20th offers audiences an opportunity to sample a cross-section of the composer’s varied instrumental sonatas, including the monumental Chaconne in D minor and the Trio Sonata from The Musical Offering. The performance will also feature Glimmerglass Festival Young Artist Winona Martin, mezzo-soprano, who will offer renditions of Bach’s beloved arias.

Theories abound as to why Bach’s music remains so compelling to audiences throughout the ages, but perhaps the answer is simple. “Bach’s music speaks to that part of us all that yearns for beauty and goodness,” says Festival Artistic Director Linda Chesis. “Every time we encounter his music, we experience that yearning anew.”

    How To Purchase

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the enduring beauty of Bach’s compositions in the intimate setting of Christ Episcopal Church. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased in advance, either online or over the phone, by calling 800-316-8559 and selecting option 1. Please note that there is a $2 service fee per phone order. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door if any remain.
