  • moe. Announces “Circle of Giants” Album, Shares Single “Ups and Downs”

moe. has announced the release of their 14th studio album, Circle of Giants, with the Upstate New York band embarking on a year of celebration that includes the band’s 35th anniversary.

Circle of Giants gives a nod to moe.’s enduring resilience and musical evolution over decades of highs and lows, bringing a fresh sound infused with introspective lyrics, coupled with masterful instrumentation and dynamic energy.

To celebrate, moe. has today released the album’s first single, “Ups and Downs,” a relatable take on the ups and downs of relationships, blending honest lyrics with an infectious groove.

“Ups and Downs” dives into the highs and lows we all face, capturing the rollercoaster of emotions in a way that feels both personal and universal. It’s a track that hits close to home while keeping the energy high. Rob Derhak shares more on the song’s origins:

‘Ups and Downs’ came about from an experiment I conducted during the pandemic in 2020. There was a lot of uncertainty about our future, and the touring music business was especially uncertain. Stuck at home, and left to my own devices, I began working on my home digital recording setup.

I came up with the idea of trying to write songs for people, and ‘Ups and Downs’ was one of those songs. It began with a conversation and a story. A man wanted me to write a song for him that could help express his feelings for his wife and their relationship. He wrote an email about how they met, but what struck me most was when he said, ‘Like anyone else, we’ve had our ups and downs.’ Once I read that, my mind opened up, and I was able to draw from my own experiences in personal relationships, and thus, the song ‘Ups and Downs’ was born.”

    Bassist Rob Derhak

Circle of Giants also marks the debut of keyboardist Nate Wilson on a moe. studio release. Having joind the band in 2023, Wilson contributed two tracks to the album, “Yellow Tigers” and “Giants,” showcasing dynamic songwriting and adding a fresh dimension to moe.’s signature sound. Tracks like “Yellow Tigers,” as well as “Band in the Sky” and “Living Again” embody a passion and perseverance that has defined moe. for over three decades.

In the spirit of celebration, moe. has also launched a pre-order for a reissue of their beloved holiday album, Season’s Greetings on festive red, white, and green pinwheel/splatter vinyl. The album bundle, including limited-edition holiday merchandise, is available now on moe.’s official website.

  • Audacy’s Star-Studded “We Can Survive” Benefit Rocks the Prudential Center for Mental Health Awareness

On Saturday, September 28th, radio giant Audacy once again filled New Jersey’s Prudential Center, marking the second consecutive year they’ve sold out the venue for their “We Can Survive” benefit concert. Now in its 13th year, the event continues to support mental health awareness and raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

The concert is a cornerstone of Audacy’s mental health initiative, “I’m Listening,” which amplifies the importance of mental well-being.

The star-studded lineup featured performances from Justin Timberlake, New Kids on the Block, Tate McRae, Benson Boone, Khalid, and rising star Isabel LaRosa. Proceeds from the event help AFSP save lives, provide hope for those impacted by suicide, and fund educational programs and resources for survivors and those affected by suicide loss.

Isabel LaRosa opened the show with a powerful debut, demonstrating a stage presence that belied her inexperience in front of such large crowds and sang a few of her favorite tunes like “i’m yours.”. Next, Benson Boone delivered a captivating set with his soulful voice, dynamic energy, and stunning vocal range, punctuated by one of his signature backflips that left the crowd in awe. He thrilled fans with TikTok hits like “Beautiful Things” and “Slow It Down,” solidifying his place as a breakout talent.

Khalid kept the momentum going, sprinting across the stage to engage with fans while performing his catalog of hits that have become the soundtrack for many, including “American Teen,” “Better,” and “Young Dumb & Broke.”

Then, Tate McRae lit up the stage, mesmerizing the audience with both her vocals and high-energy choreography. The pop sensation performed her smash hit “Greedy,” which has racked up over a billion streams, along with her latest single, “It’s okay I’m okay,” in only its second live performance.

The excitement continued as New Kids on the Block got the entire arena on their feet. Fans of all ages were dancing in anticipation, with DJ Andrew Hypes building the energy before the iconic group took the stage. The group sang their familiar favorites, including “Step by Step,” “I’ll Be Loving You (Forever),” and “You Got It (The Right Stuff).

The night concluded with a headlining performance by Justin Timberlake, whose set—though closed to the press—was the perfect grand finale to an unforgettable evening in support of an important cause of Mental Health Awareness.

  • Dirty Honey’s “Can’t Find The Breaks” tour rolls up to Foxwoods Casino

After playing a successful show at the Huntington Paramount days ago, Dirty Honey brought their “Can’t Find The Breaks” tour to Foxwoods Casino.

Supporting Dirty Honey was St. Louis natives The Band Feel. The night was the perfect revival of rock and roll by two young and hungry bands.

Between the hustle and bustle of the casino floor, the Great Cedar Showroom sits in the back. But, an hour away from showtime, fans were lining up at the merchandise booth to pick up memorabilia. This is Dirty Honey’s first time in Connecticut since their March 27, 2022 show at Toads Place. But, before the Los Angeles natives took the stage, at 8:00 sharp, The Band Feel jumped on stage. Due to the casino curfew, they had a shortened setlist.

Even though The Band Feel’s setlist was short, they didn’t let it deter them from introducing fans to their music. The quartet dressed as if the band was born in the 1970’s and their music matched. They played six songs that – by the end of the set – won the crowd over.

The quartet features T.J. Steinwart on drums, Tyler Armstrong on guitar, Garret Barcus on lead vocals and Kadin Rea on bass. The four-man group channeled in callings of the Golden Age of rock and roll. It’s easy to see why Dirty Honey would bring them on tour. A young band in Dirty Honey is giving another younger band (The Band Feel) a chance at a national tour and getting the word out there that rock and roll is here to stay.

After a stage change, quickly, AC/DC’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll Damnation” blasted on the speakers and Dirty Honey made their triumphant return to Connecticut. This was the first time that fans in the area could get a look at new drummer Jaydon Bean. Bean took over for original drummer Corey Coverstone after their debut record. With new songs in their arsenal, the band fully attacked the fans in the Great Cedar Showroom with material from their new record. It was refreshing to hear the band play music from their entire category and not strictly off one album or EP.

Joining Bean was singer Marc LaBelle, guitarist John Notto and bassist Justin Smolian. The latter three were the three original members of the band and have been the longest-tenured.

Their new material sounded great. As they plowed through their set, they alternated between older material and new songs. LaBelle’s vocals sounded just like the actual record. If you closed your eyes during the show, you could have been tricked that someone flipped on the record. They sounded great live.

Something new that has been incorporated in this show – which did not happen at the Toads Place show – was the band extending songs and jamming. During one of their classic songs, “Scars” they added an awesome extended jam. To see Dirty Honey get more comfortable exploring their music and adding diversity and freshness to their music is amazing.

Like The Band Feel, Dirty Honey dressed straight out of the 1970’s. It was almost like a crossover between The Black Crowes and Aerosmith. Also, their influences of classic rock and roll could be heard seeping through in their music.

One of the songs off the new record, Can’t Find The Breaks that was one of the standouts of the evening was “Coming Home (Ballad of the Shire).” Before the song started LaBelle announced to the audience that his father and some of his hometown friends were in the audience. During the song, it was extremely quiet, you could hear a pin drop. The audience was transfixed by the acoustic song that captivated the entire theater.

Immediately after  “Coming Home (Ballad of the Shire),” they plunged into a cover of The Rolling Stones’Honky Tonk Woman.” This received a massive roar from the audience. Throughout the night, their logo blinked to the beat of the song creating a visual spectacle.

From the moment that the band got on stage to the moment that they sang their last song, they did not rest or slow down. Notto was running, duck-walking and arm-swinging the entire night. The smile on his face never waned as fans in front of him cheered and put up the rock and roll horns all night long.

Even though the lower bowl of the theater had seats, fans treated it like a general admission. For Dirty Honey’s entire set, they were standing, clapping and cheering. Fans and high rollers who sat in the front merged up against the stage to take a closer look at the band.

Dirty Honey is one of those generational bands that help revive a genre of music. The way they channel classic rock sounds and put elegant, modern twists on them is unforgettable. Even though this is their final leg of the tour supporting their new album, when the chance comes, you have to see them. Every year, their loyal following grows. It will be only a matter of time before they upgrade to the biggest venues in your area.

The Band Feel setlist: Find a Love, Call It What You Want, G Rock, What of Now, Goodbye Virginia, In The Garden

Dirty Honey setlist: Can’t Find the Breaks, California Dreamin’, Heartbreaker, Down the Road, Scars, Dirty Mind, Tied Up, Coming Home (Ballad of the Shire), Honey Tonk Woman (Rolling Stones cover), Don’t Put Out the Fire, The Wire, Another Last Time, When I’m Gone, You Make It All Right, Won’t Take Me Alive, Rolling 7s

  • Trombone Shorty and Foundation Announce The Return of “Getting Funky in Havana”

Grammy-winning artist Trombone Shorty, alongside his foundation, is once again embarking on a cultural exchange known as “Getting Funky in Havana” in Cuba.

From January 16-20, Trombone Shorty, his band Orleans Avenue, a group of young musicians from New Orleans, all members of the Foundation, and critically acclaimed Afro-Cuban/funk fusion star Cimafunk will come together for a unique cross-cultural experience. This trip will bring together artists, students, and supporters for a transformative journey of music and cultural connection.

The event will feature a lineup of celebrated artists, including Taj Mahal, Grace Potter, Julius Rodriguez, Keyon Harrold, Robert Randolph, Yola, and others. Jam sessions, cultural exchanges, and performances will highlight the deep historical and musical connections between New Orleans and Cuba, fostering collaboration and creativity among all participants.

This marks the fourth trip of its kind, inspired by Trombone Shorty’s personal connection to Havana which dates back to his childhood when in 1999, alongside his brother James Andrews, he embarked on a transformative journey to Cuba as part of a cultural exchange program.

The music of Cuba was “hidden away from American ears on the island” for decades, but this exchange explores the musical influences and connections that have persisted between New Orleans and Cuba. The music and culture of Cuba are already infused into the larger New York City area with over 140 thousand people of Cuban heritage in the area. Our own editor-in-chief highlighted the importance of this in his own transformative journey through Cuba. You can check this story out and more in our NYS Music Goes To Cuba series.

Approximately 100 supporters will join the musicians and students, forming a VIP travel group to Cuba. Funds raised from this effort will support educational programs led by Cimafunk and the Trombone Shorty Foundation, benefiting young artists and musicians in both Cuba and New Orleans. These efforts will include instrument donations and partnerships with local Cuban music schools and community programs, further strengthening ties between the two vibrant cultures.

Getting Funky in Havana is organized by Cuba Educational Travel, the leader in travel and cultural exchanges between Cuba and the United States.Learn more here.

  • Tesla brings the electricity to the Premier Theater at Foxwoods Casino

Legendary 80’s band Tesla brought their “Keepin’ It Real” tour to the Premier Theater at Foxwoods Casino. The band in no time sold out the casino’s biggest venue. Even before the opener, Sebastian Bach went on stage, the crowd filed in and packed the theater.

If you were to go back in time to the late 1980s or early 1990’s the combination of Tesla with Skid Row – Bach’s former band, could have been a reality. Unfortunately for the rock community, getting this amazing duo took a little longer than normal. In the casino, there are strict curfews so Bach went on stage a few minutes past 8:00 p.m. He delivered a heavy set of 12 songs that consisted of Skid Row classics and solo material.

As fans could have expected, more than half of Bach’s set was Skid Row songs. But, he did kick his set off with one of his newest songs, “What Do I Got to Lose?” off his newest record, Child Within The Man. It was great to hear four of his newer songs and introduce old fans to newer material. The crowd was going wild for him Bach, for each song they would give a thunderous cheer. In response, for the entire time, Bach was smiling ear to ear and his voice was pitch-perfect.

Despite fighting some technical difficulties with his microphone and the sound, the four-piece band put on an unforgettable show. Joining Bach was his son, Paris on drums, Clay Eubank on bass and Brody DeRozie on guitar. For the entire time they were on stage, they headbanged and hair flipped. That was until they played their last song, “Youth Gone Wild,” but were cut off by the curfew and were forced not to play the song. Heroically though, Tesla brought him back out at the end of their set to play “Youth Gone Wild” and their song, “Signs.”

    PHOTO

It only took a few short minutes between sets for Tesla to lay siege to the Foxwoods crowd. They jumped right into “Rock Me To The Top,” off of their debut record, Mechanical Resonance. The entire lower bowl of the theater stayed on its feet for the entire performance. Despite big red cushioned chairs behind them, the audience refused and stood in appreciation for the almost two-hour set.

It’s easy to see why Tesla continues to sell out venues across the country. It’s because they deliver a great performance with so much infectious energy. Guitarist Frank Hannon, for the entire performance, ran back and forth from side to side delivering one of the best performances yet. Behind his yellow sunglasses, he shredded nonstop throughout the show. Whether it was a beautiful double-neck guitar or a classic Gibson, stopping Hanson was not possible.

Joining Hannon in the band is Brian Wheat on bass, Jeff Keith on lead vocals, Dave Rude on guitar and Steve Brown on the drums.

They played two new songs off an upcoming record that Hannon says come out around Thanksgiving time. “From the Heart” and the title track, “All About Love” received warm reactions from the audience. If true, this would be Tesla’s first studio record since 2018’s Shock.

The band played all their greatest hits as well as some deep cuts. This constantly left the audience guessing on what song would be played next. At one point in the set, they played five of their most popular songs in a row which had the audience in a frenzy. “Changes,” “Paradise,” “Call It What You Want” and “Edison’s Medicine (Man Out of Time)” were the perfect final few songs.

Usually, Tesla’s first and final song of the encore is “Signs.” The popular song is a cover of Five Man Electrical Band’s version. But, for this show, after Bach’s set got cut by one song, they brought him back out to do a small snippet of “Youth Gone Wild.” This was followed by “Signs” and a great closing moment in the show. During the Bach/Tesla duet, you can tell that Bach appreciated the kind gesture of the band and it goes to show that Tesla does truly care about, not only the fans but the support act as well.

Tesla’s one-stop at Foxwood’s on their “Keepin’ It Real” tour was well worth it for everyone involved. It was a fantastic throwback to when the 1980s was all about hard rock and metal. The Bach and Tesla pairing was perfect. Bach’s headbanging metal was the perfect balance with Tesla’s power chords and harmonies. If Tesla brings their juggernaut tour back to a New York area, I highly suggest going out and seeing them. They’ll make sure that you get your money’s worth.

  • Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band: A Laid-Back Night of Classic Hits in Niagara Falls

Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band delivered a laid-back yet nostalgic performance at the OLG Stage, Fallsview Casino, on Sunday, September 22. With a notably early 7:05 pm start and a crowd whose average age hovered around 70, the evening had an easy-going vibe, more in tune with quiet reflection than raucous rock.

Yet, despite this atmosphere, the night offered plenty of memorable moments, capturing the essence of Ringo’s lifelong musicianship and his enduring charm. Ringo Starr was last in the area ten years ago at Artpark in Lewiston.

    Ringo Starr

    Ringo’s Enduring Presence

At 84 years old, Ringo Starr continues to be a magnetic stage presence. Alternating between vocals and his iconic spot behind the Ludwig drum kit, Ringo displayed both energy and humor. Early in the show, he quipped, “I guarantee everyone here will know at least one song, and if you don’t, I don’t know why you are here,” setting the tone for the night with his easy humor and rapport with the audience. His performance, while not flawless, was full of heart especially when he asked the band to restart “Boys” after making a mistake early in the song. It was a candid and endearing moment that underscored Ringo’s human touch, something fans have loved him for since his Beatles days.

    Ringo Starr

    A Setlist That Surprised

Though many came hoping for a set heavy with Beatles classics, the show took a different direction, giving room to the diverse talents of his All-Starr Band. Steve Lukather (Toto), Colin Hay (Men at Work), Warren Ham, Hamish Stuart (Average White Band), and Gregg Bissonette all had their moments to shine, playing a range of hits that leaned more on Toto and Average White Band than the Fab Four. This could have been a disappointment to purists, but for the seasoned crowd, it provided a fresh mix of classic rock and pop staples. Lukather’s precision on guitar and Hay’s vocals were particularly strong, bringing life to tracks like Toto’s “Africa” and Average White Band’s funky “Cut the Cake.” His usual keyboard player Edgar Winter was not seen on stage

In a playful twist, the band spiced up their performance of “Cut the Cake” by weaving in snippets of iconic songs like “We Will Rock You,” “Moby Dick,” and even Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” which sent ripples of excitement through the audience.

A Lighter Touch of Beatles Magic

Beatles fans were rewarded with only four songs from Ringo’s original group, and while this might have been fewer than expected, each performance carried its own magic. “Yellow Submarine” and “Down Under” both invited sing-alongs from the crowd. These moments were cherished by the audience, even if they weren’t the show’s central focus.

    The Venue and Atmosphere

The OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino, with its 5,000-person capacity, created an intimate atmosphere well-suited to the more laid-back energy of the evening. The audience, particularly those in the upper levels, stayed seated for most of the night. Some on the floor level were standing. There was a subdued but sense of nostalgia as people swayed and sang along to familiar tunes.

The stage production added a layer of subtle drama, with the use of haze and smoke enhancing the lighting effects. Heavy magenta tones dominated the palette, giving the stage a soft, ethereal glow. This visual element, though not overbearing (for non-photographers), helped elevate the mood and complemented the All-Starr Band’s dynamic performances.

    Ringo Starr

    Final Thoughts

Ringo Starr may be 84, but he’s still rocking. The show wasn’t just a nostalgic trip down memory lane; it was a testament to his enduring love for performing and his ability to bring together an eclectic group of musicians who each add their unique flair. While it wasn’t a Beatles-heavy evening, it was an enjoyable celebration of music’s timelessness. For the crowd of mostly older fans, it was a comfortable, cozy night spent with one of rock’s most beloved drummers.

If this performance was any indication, Ringo’s all-star band experiment is still going strong, as he continues to charm and entertain with humility and humor. Ringo’s final show of this tour will be in NYC on 9/25/2024.

Setlist: Matchbox, It Don’t Come Easy, Rosanna, Pick Up the Pieces, Down Under, Boys, I’m the Greatest, Yellow Submarine, Cut the Cake, Octopus’s Garden, Back Off Boogaloo, Overkill, Africa, Work to Do, I Wanna Be Your Man, Who Can It Be Now? Hold the Line, Photograph, With a Little Help From My Friends

The street festival will include a book signing with Terri Thal, music lessons, performances, and a jam.

You can enjoy all the performances indoors as well as a variety of music workshops on topics such as guitar tricks and song writing taught by this year’s Hudson West Fest performers and Welcome Home New Jersey will bring a taste of ethnic foods. Entry is $35 each person, or $40 at the door.

Hudson West says their mission is “to enable fine musicians to earn a living from their art.” and “to help the larger community hear high quality music and gain a greater appreciation.”

  • A Night of Horror and Heavy Metal: Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, Ministry and Filter Rock PNC Arts Center

On Saturday, September 7, the PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey was treated to a powerhouse lineup of rock and industrial legends, featuring Filter, Ministry, Alice Cooper, and Rob Zombie. The diverse crowd, a mix of metalheads, goths, and rockers, gathered for a night of electrifying performances, each act bringing its signature style and energy to the stage.

    Filter Opens with Grunge-Industrial Anthems

Filter kicked off the evening, setting the tone with their grunge-tinged industrial sound. Opening with “You Walk Away,” the band immediately captured the crowd’s attention. Their setlist included fan-favorite hits like “Take My Picture” and the iconic “Hey Man, Nice Shot,” which sent waves of nostalgia through the audience. Richard Patrick’s intense vocals and the band’s tight instrumentation delivered a strong start, with plenty of sing-alongs and headbanging from the early crowd.

Ministry took the stage next, delivering a relentless barrage of industrial metal. Al Jourgensen and company wasted no time diving into their gritty catalog with tracks like “Stigmata,” “Just One Fix,” and the iconic “Jesus Built My Hotrod.” The band’s machine-like precision and pounding beats had the crowd entranced, while Jourgensen’s snarling vocals added an extra layer of chaos to the performance. With their dark, aggressive sound and pulsating light show, Ministry left a lasting impact, keeping the energy at a fever pitch for the next act.

Alice Cooper’s Theatrical Horror Show Steals the Spotlight

The legendary Alice Cooper, at 76 years old, proved he’s still the undisputed king of shock rock. Entering the stage through a massive “Banned in New Jersey” newspaper, Cooper launched into “Lock Me Up,” immediately immersing the crowd in his signature blend of rock and theatrical horror. Backed by a stellar band, Cooper’s set was filled with classic hits like “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” “I’m Eighteen,” and “Poison,” each song complemented by a dizzying array of visual spectacles.

From impaling a paparazzo to draping a boa constrictor around his neck and battling a Jason Voorhees-style monster, Cooper’s showmanship was on full display. The crowd was particularly captivated by “The Ballad of Dwight Fry,” where Cooper, in a straitjacket, met a chilling end at the guillotine – only to return for an explosive rendition of “School’s Out” to close out his set. His energy, despite his age, was awe-inspiring, leaving fans thrilled and cheering for more.

Rob Zombie’s Horror Extravaganza Caps Off the Night

Rob Zombie closed out the night with his high-octane, horror-infused set. Bursting onto the stage with “Demon Speeding” Zombie’s performance was a technicolor feast for the eyes, featuring scenes from his horror films and retro visual effects flashing behind him. The crowd was treated to a wild ride through Zombie’s discography with songs like “Living Dead Girl” and “Superbeast.”

Though longtime guitarist John 5 was absent, having joined Mötley Crüe, Zombie’s current lineup – Mike Riggs on guitar, Rob “Blasko” Nicholson on bass, and Ginger Fish on drums – delivered a blistering performance that kept the energy sky-high. Zombie’s stage presence, with his high kicks and dramatic flair, kept the crowd engaged, dancing, and screaming for more until the very end.
