  • 2017 Saranac Thursday Acts Announced

    Saranac Brewery in Utica announced the 2017 lineup for its annual summer music series, Saranac Thursdays, on Tuesday. The kick-off event takes place May 18 with a 25th anniversary show from local show band Classified. The 19th year of the series continues throughout the summer, with hard rock act the Bomb closing it out Aug. 31.

    Syracuse-based groove rockers, Barroom Philosophers make their Utica debut on the Saranac stage July 13 and local favorites, the Canadian Celt-Rockers Enter the Haggis make their annual return to the courtyard the final Thursday in July. Other popular regional acts slated to play include the Old Main, Annie in the Water, Chris Eves and the New Normal and Gridley-Paige and 3 Inch Fury presenting “Rock of Ages.”

    The series features local and regional acts from 6-9 p.m. each Thursday. Cover charge for each 21 and over show is $5, which includes your first drink. A portion of the proceeds from the series is donated to the local United Way. The events raised $41,000 for the organization last year.

  • Celebrations Planned Across New York State on May 8 for Anniversary of Grateful Dead Show

    Next week on May 8, Grateful Dead fans around the world will mark the 40th anniversary of one of the most revered and traded shows in the band’s extensive history, that of 5/8/77 at Barton Hall at Cornell University. The show is a thing of legend for fans new and old, an oft listened to show that features numerous stand out versions of classic Dead songs. It has led to Tompkins Country Legislature announcing May 8 as ‘Grateful Dead Day’ and will also feature the release of a book covering the lore of the show, Cornell ’77: The Music, The Myth And The Magnificence Of The Grateful Dead’s Show At Barton Hall.

    State Theatre of Ithaca

    Right in the town where the show was held, The State Theatre of Ithaca will hold….

    The event at The State Theatre of Ithaca will feature a special set of acoustic Grateful Dead music performed by Ithaca’s own tribute band, “Terrapin Station”, an official listening party of the 1977 release on the State Theatre’s brand new state-of-the-art sound system, a unique silent auction and a variety of special guests and speakers. In addition to the live music and Grateful Dead celebrations, Cornell University Press and author Peter Conners will also be in attendance chatting to fans about their new book “Cornell 77: The Music, The Myth and The Magnificence of The Grateful Dead’s Concert at Barton Hall”. Signed copies will also be available for purchase at this event.

    Dark Hollow at The Range in Ithaca

    Central New York’s Dark Hollow will perform the 1977 Barton Hall show at Cornell on May 8 for the 40th-anniversary celebration at The Range in Ithaca. Dark Hollow is one of the premier Grateful Dead bands in the Upstate NY area and will be joined by Rick Redington & the Luv, who seamlessly introduce the best aspects of country and folk into a variety of genres.

    In honor of the 40th anniversary, the Cornell Chimes will perform 4 songs from the Grateful Dead repertoire from 6 – 6:30pm on May 8. Fans are encouraged to bring blankets and spread out on the lawn around the tower. At 5:45pm, Dan Klein from the Tompkins County Legislature will read a proclamation declaring May 8, 2017 “Grateful Dead Day in Tompkins County.”Author Peter Conners will be available to sign copies of his new book from Cornell University Press Cornell ’77: The Music, The Myth, and the Magnificence of the Grateful Dead’s Concert at Barton Hall at the Cornell Store from 5:45-6:30pm

    The Cornell Chimes have been the heartbeat of Cornell’s campus life for more than a century, marking the hours and chiming concerts. The original set of nine bells first rang out at the university’s opening ceremonies October 7, 1868. Over time the chime has been recast and expanded to 21 bells; it continues to ring daily concerts, making it one of the largest and most frequently played chimes in the world. This marks the first time The Cornell Chimes will perform works by the Grateful Dead

    Rhino Entertainment and The Capitol Theatre Present: 5/8/77 Revisited – A Grateful Dead Dance Party

    Part of the legacy of the Barton Hall performance is the quality of the recording that has circulated, and on May 8, The Capitol Theatre will host a listening party of the just-released “official” recording. The new recording will sound impeccably good through The Cap’s state-of-the art sound system and the new recording will be available for purchase at the event. Rhino Records will be on hand, giving away free stickers, patches, notebooks, and music releases as well. Also in attendance will be Larry Reichman, the “official” photographer of Cornell University on 5/8/77, who will be presenting never-before-seen images from this concert that we’ll be projecting on the walls of the Cap. He will also be promoting his upcoming book that will contain them. Tickets to this performance cost only $6.50 in advance – the original price of tickets for the Barton Hall performance in 1977.

  • Downtown Barn 2017 Season Announced

    The Downtown Barn in Liberty announced its 2017 season, which opens May 5 and closes out on Oct. 20. The season features many local acts, including Slam Allen, Breakfast for the Boys and Upstate Rubdown.

    Liberty’s Downtown Barn, as with every season, kicks off on May 5 with New York Blues Hall of Famer Slam Allen, who also closes out the season on Oct. 20. The 2017 season features 26 affordable shows with most shows priced at $12 in advance and $15 at the door. This season features a number of local and national artists, including Gruppo Mondo, which features Peter Gabriel’s drummer Jerry Marrotta, on May 19 and Sept. 16, Gregg Allman’s music director Scott Sharrard on June 2 and Walter Parks, lead guitarist for Richie Havens, on July 1.

    The Downtown Barn opened in the center of the village of Liberty, tucked away in the Catskills, in 2013 as a small event space with a capacity of 120 seats. The stage was built from hardwood tongue and groove boards reclaimed from one of the silos on Max Yasgur’s farm, the location of the original 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Fair.

  • Paul McCartney to Perform at Carrier Dome in September

    Sir Paul McCartney is making his way to Syracuse for a show at the Carrier Dome September 23.

    Officials announced the concert at a Tuesday morning press conference from the turf inside the dome. The show is being presented by the Bowery Presents.

    paul mccartney carrier dome septemberManaging Director of the Carrier Dome, Peter Sala, told Syracuse.com about the booking, “This is one of those performers we’ve been working very hard to bring to the university, to the campus. To me, it’s an honor. Paul McCartneys don’t come along every day. It’s an unbelievable moment to bring him to the Syracuse University campus.”

    McCartney, a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, rose to fame with the Beatles in the early 1960s. Following their breakup in 1970, McCartney embarked on a solo career with contributions from his wife Linda. This collaboration morphed into the band Wings, which enjoyed a successful run throughout the 1970s.

    Following the breakup of Wings, McCartney then pursued a successful solo career, collaborating with such music legends as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello and David Gilmour. Recent years have seen Sir Paul working with Krist Novaselic and Dave Grohl from Nirvana as well as Rihanna and Kanye West.

    McCartney was scheduled to appear at the Carrier Dome in 1993 but cancelled the show due to a live broadcast for Fox Television. He last appeared in Upstate New York in 2015 at Buffalo’s First Niagara Center.

    Tickets for the show go on sale Monday, May 1 at 10 a.m. McCartney announced an additional New York show at Nassau Colleseum in Uniondale Sept. 26. Tickets for that show go on sale May 5.

  • John Mayer Launches his Search For Everything World Tour

    The musically acclaimed John Mayer kicked off his latest tour at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY on March 31, 2017. This tour is in support of his recently released studio album entitled The Search For Everything.

    Search For EverythingThe format of his concert included five chapters to help guide the audience through the show, which featured songs from his entire repertoire of music. The sets consisted of a digital backdrop that projected different scenes for each song. Mayer began by playing a set with his full band stretching as far back as his 2006 Continuum era to open the show with “Belief” and later playing “I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You).” During this first chapter, in addition to live debuting “Helpless,” Mayer stepped away from his sidekick guitar with a microphone in hand to engage with his audience during “Moving On and Getting Over.” He decided to play the hook back multiple times varying the speed and melody while breaking out unusual dance moves rarely seen in his live performances.

    Not only is John Mayer a brilliant lyricist with a distinguishable voice, but he is also an incredibly talented guitarist. The second chapter of his show was composed of three well-known songs and referred to as the ‘acoustic’ set, allowing him to display his mesmerizing guitar skills. In this chapter specifically, the crowd could be caught singing along to every word of “Daughters” and his infamous cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” where he was accompanied by band-mate and fellow guitarist David Ryan Harris.

    Search For EverythingEvery concert on this tour also features songs from John Mayer Trio (JM3) during which Mayer excitedly invites the legendary bass player Pino Paladino and drummer Steve Jordan to perform alongside him. The trio reunited on stage to play both original JM3 songs and covers from the greats such as Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix. Each show on this tour features well-known, new and obscure tracks from Mayer’s vast musical library.

    Some highlight performances from the fourth chapter were songs from his earlier record “Why Georgia.” Mayer also reminisced on the making of Paradise Valley before playing the light-hearted “Dear Marie.” After leaving the stage and returning for his full band encore, playing songs like the anticipated “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room,” Mayer exited the stage for what the audience thought was the last time, only to return a few minutes later to booming applause from the audience.

    Search For EverythingFor this final chapter, the entire stage set was transformed into a blank white page except for the word ‘Epilogue’ which flashed on the screen. Mayer appeared alone on stage sitting at a white piano which he used to accompany himself for the final song, “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me.” At the conclusion of the song, he walked through a stage door in the middle of the white screen that was not visible to the audience, leaving one to wonder if his passage through this door is meant to symbolize his continual Search for Everything.

    Excitement amongst long-time fans started buzzing from the moment Mayer announced his tour. His opening show exceeded my expectations as the emphasis was placed upon the music with a tasteful amount of production elements. I personally can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve for future shows and encourage all who have the opportunity to see him on this tour.

  • Bringing the Boy Back Home: Brit Floyd Bassist and Syracuse Son, Ian Cattell Discusses Playing a Hometown Show

    The spectacular Pink Floyd experience known as Brit Floyd visits the Crouse Hinds Theater at the OnCenter in Syracuse Tues. April 18. The band has been proclaimed, “The World’s Greatest Pink Floyd Show.” The spectacle and grandeur of each Brit Floyd show leaves few to argue that point. The Immersion World Tour celebrates the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s 1977 album Animals. Tickets for the show are still available through Ticketmaster and the OnCenter box office.

    Recently, NYS Music sat down with Brit Floyd bassist Ian Cattell, who grew up in the Syracuse area, to discuss the current tour; the pressure to perform Floyd material and playing in his hometown.

    brit floydBrit Floyd has been touring the world performing the music of Pink Floyd since 2011 but has its genesis in the Australian Pink Show back in 2005. Cattell has performed with both units in addition to playing in several prog-oriented outfits as an up-and-comer in the Central New York Scene.

    Cattell moved to Syracuse at the age of 10 and lived there throughout high school. He played with several local outfits that gathered some large followings during his time in Syracuse: Crazy Diamond and Childhood’s End, both Pink Floyd tribute projects; the United Booty Foundation, a popular funk-disco band and Seconds Out, a Genesis cover band. It was through these endeavors that Cattell honed his prog-rock chops, leading to his current gig with Brit Floyd.

    When you’re performing the music of such an iconic band in rock history, there is already a built-in fan base looking for note-for-note replication of that band’s work. When asked if he ever feels that pressure or if he places any pressure on himself, Cattell responded,

    Oh, definitely. If we were out doing original music, you can kind of do it however you like. It’s yours. Whereas, there are so many Floyd fans that listen to the albums over and over again and they’re so familiar with every last detail. We try to put a little bit of our own flavor into it for our own fun, but it’s only to a point, because people are expecting to hear how it is on the album.

    Cattell performs both David Gilmour and Roger Waters songs but finds his natural singing voice closer to that of Gilmour’s. He first “tried his Roger Waters vocals on with Childhood’s End” around 2001. He does admit to his voice being “in character” while singing Waters’ vocals. First timers may be fooled into thinking the Floyd bassist is making a guest appearance onstage.

    When attending a Brit Floyd show, expect to spend the night. Each show is approximately three hours long, with songs spanning Pink Floyd’s career. This tour focuses on not only the 40th anniversary of Animals but also the 1994 release The Division Bell, with other eras being represented as well.

    When asked what makes playing in his adopted hometown different from other venues, Cattell states, “Each time we play in Syracuse, it’s quite amazing. I feel like I know at least half the audience. If not from having done gigs or going to see gigs or through Facebook…I get a vibe off the Syracuse crowd like no other because I know so many people there. I do so many gigs where I don’t know anybody…but Syracuse is unique where it’s that the people I know are everywhere I look.”

    If you miss Tuesday’s show in Syracuse, Brit Floyd will be performing in Schenectady at Proctor’s Theater Wed., April 19.

  • Update: Chillfam All-Stars Pay Tribute to Michael Jackson at Phish After-Party

    The Chillfam All-Stars will play a tribute to Michael Jackson on Aug. 5 at the Gramercy Theatre for an afterparty during the Phish Baker’s Dozen run. The band is a supergroup of familiar faces and includes Elise Testone, Jen Hartswick and Natalie Cressman of the Trey Anastasio Band, Alex Petropulos of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Danny Mayer of the Eric Krasno Band, Eric Gould and Richard James of Pink Talking Fish, Adrian Tramontano of Kung Fu, Matt Wayne of the Bobby Deitch Band and Rob Volo of Deep Banana Blackout. Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon.

    Turkuaz is the latest act to announce a Phish afterparty during the Baker’s Dozen run. They play Irving plaza on Tuesday, July 25. Tickets for their show go on sale this Thursday, May 25, at noon.

    Matisyahu, Atlas Road Crew and Strange Machines will all play afterparties following Phish’s Baker’s Dozen shows.

    Strange Machines plays Wednesday, July 26 at Drom. Eggy opens the show. Atlas Road Crew hits up American Beauty on Friday, Aug. 4. Tickets for both shows are on sale now.

    The Cutting Room sees Matisyahu on Wednesday, Aug. 2. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Friday, May 5 at noon.

    Update 4/26/2017:

    Pink Talking Fish, Holly Bowling and the Motet will all play shows around Phish’s Baker’s Dozen run at Madison Square Garden. Following Phish on Tuesday, Aug. 1, Pink Talking Fish plays as Pink Talking Fish Are Dead at the Cutting Room. They also play an after-party on Friday, Aug. 4 at the Gramercy Theatre. They board The Jewel for a pre-party booze cruise the next day, Saturday, Aug. 5. The cruise is at 2 p.m.

    Holly Bowling brings her solo piano renditions of Phish and Grateful Dead songs to the Cutting Room on Saturday and Sunday, July 22 and 23 and Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5 and 6. All her shows start at 4 p.m.

    The Motet plays an afterparty on the first night of the run, Friday, July 21 at B.B. Kings.

    When Phish comes to New York City, the party tends to start well before the shows and it always ends long after they leave the stage. As with every Phish run at Madison Square Garden, a slew of pre-parties and afterparties are planned for their 13 night Baker’s Dozen run at the storied arena.

    Phish is set to play their historic 13 night run at Madison Square Garden beginning July 21 and ending on Aug. 6. CEG Presents has pre-parties and afterparties planned for just about every night of the Baker’s Dozen. Their run of shows kicks off a day early on Thursday, July 20 with Twiddle and Madaila. Twiddle finishes out a three-night run with a pair of Phish afterparties on Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22. All three shows are at Irving Plaza. Particle also plays an afterparty on July 21 at the Cutting Room. The DeadPhish Orchestra plays a 2 p.m. concert cruise on July 22 before the show.

    John Kadlecik brings Jay Lane of Ratdog to join his band for a pair of afterparties on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 25 and 26. Both shows are at American Beauty.

    The second weekend of the run has Dopapod playing two nights at the Gramercy Theatre on Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29. Also on July 29 are Bonerama at Iridium and Torus and the Mushroom Cloud at Drom.

    The final stretch of Phish shows see fewer afterparties. Zach Deputy hits up American Beauty after Phish on Wednesday, Aug. 2. Saturday, Aug. 5 has a pair of shows with Formula 5 at Lucille’s at B.B. King’s and Particle back at the Cutting Room for their “Director’s Cut.”

    Tickets for all of these shows, except Dopapod, are on sale now. The Dopapod shows go on sale on Friday, April 14 at noon.

  • Formula 5 Releases Studio Video of Upcoming Album ‘All Points North’

    NYS Music stopped by Over It Studios in Albany this January and February to catch Formula 5 in the studio recording All Points North, which will be released on April 14 on F5Jams.com. F.Cavone Productions filmed and edited this look at Albany’s rapidly rising jam band.

    Themes of death, rebirth, and moving on make All Points North a more introspective album than the band’s previous studio efforts. It also marks a new direction for the band’s sound.   • Formula 5 Announces Album Release Date and Supporting Spring Tour

    Up and coming Albany based jamband, Formula 5 has announced its new album, the band’s third, along with a supporting spring tour. The new album, All Points North, was funded through a Kickstarter campaign last fall and is set for release April 14.

    The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Bryan Brundige at Overit Studios in Albany and Mastered by Michael Schoonmaker at Gigantic Mastering and will be available on streaming platforms on April 14 as well as at the band’s website and JEMP Radio.

    The new album marks a new stage in the band’s progression, bringing a more mature sound. Guitarist Joe Davis reflected on the old version of the band:

    “Q&A” and “Excalibur” are on ode to the old band, having been written by myself and (former keyboardist) Mike McDonald. It’s like a final farewell to the old, mixed in with new styles, such as with “The Birch Tree,” “Do Tell,” “Figure Out a Feeling,” “Trout Waters Pt I & II” and “It Goes…;” that old jammy style is still in us but it’s more mature and reigned in.

    The new sound has a more introspective feel while still maintaining roots in the band’s signature improvisational style. It’s an album that will appeal to old fans and garner new as the band looks to expand its reach beyond the Capital District.

    Formula 5 kicks off its Northeast spring tour at the Rock ‘n Roll Resort in Kerhonksen, N.Y. on March 31 and hits several New York venues along the way, including the legendary Monopole in Plattsburgh, the Waterhole in Saranac Lake, Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs, American Beauty in New York City, Buffalo Iron Works, Three Heads Brewing in Rochester, Nanola in Malta, the Dinosaur in Troy and wrapping up at Disc Jam Festival in Stephentown June 8 through 11.

  • Great Acorn Hunt with Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass

    Keller Williams brings his Grateful Grass to the Capitol Theatre in April, and prior to the show, attendees are invited to participate in the Great Acorn Hunt, a twist on the classic Easter egg hunt.keller williams acorn huntKeller Williams’ Grateful Grass, his bluegrass tribute to the Grateful Dead, plays the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on Thursday, April 20. As part of the festivities, fans are invited to take part in the Great Acorn Hunt. For the acorn hunt, much like an Easter egg hunt, acorn “eggs” will be hidden throughout the theatre. Participants will search for the eggs for prizes, such as tickets to shows at the venue and Keller Williams merchandise. The acorns are a nod to the Capitol Theatre’s squirrel mascot.

    Keller William’s Grateful Grass features Jeff Austin, Jeremy Garrett, Andy Hall and Danton Boller. They play a not-very-traditional bluegrass take on the music of the Grateful Dead. Opening the show is Love Canon, a bluegrass outfit from Charlottesville, North Carolina. Continuing with the night’s theme of non-traditional tributes, Love Canon covers musical hits from the ’80s, such as “She Blinded Me with Science,” “The Boys of Summer” and ZZ Top’s “Legs.”

    Tickets for the show are $30 and on sale now. The Great Acorn Hunt will begin promptly at 7 p.m. with the show starting at 8 p.m.
