  • Roger Waters Bringing US + THEM Tour to Times Union Center

    Roger Waters will bring Pink Floyd’s historic album The Wall to Albany’s Times Union Center on September 23, 2017, part of the US + THEM tour.

    Waters has toured on Pink Floyd’s The Wall in recent years, and will be performing songs from Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here and more. The Wall tour came through Upstate in June of 2012, and has even been suggested to be performed on the U.S/Mexico border.

    Tickets for the show go on sale on Monday, February 27 at 10 am through Ticketmaster.

  • Melissa Etheridge Bringing True Self to Troy

    Academy Award and Grammy winning musician Melissa Etheridge is bringing everything she’s got to the Troy with the Hodges Brothers this April.

    On April 23. at 7:30 PM, Etheridge will be performing at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy on her M.E. tour. With two Grammys and an Academy Award win behind her, Etheridge has continued for over two decades to be one of America’s beloved female singer-songwriters.

    Known for hit singles such as, “I’m the Only One”, “Ain’t It Heavy” and “I Want To Come Over,” Etheridge is bringing her signature smoky, raspy vocals to Troy alongside new content for her tour.

    On Oct. 7, Etheridge released, Memphis Rock & Soul, her first album since 2014’s critically acclaimed, This Is M.E. Receiving praise from renowned publications such as Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly, Etheridge will be sharing some of her newer works across the country for her M.E. tour.

    Etheridge is also known for inspiring people beyond her music. Beating her battle with breast cancer, Etheridge appeared at the 2005 Grammys to perform Janis Joplin’s, “Piece of My Heart,” bald from her chemotherapy. Doing so, Etheridge inspired women across the world with her powerful message.

  • moe. and Twiddle to co-headline Red Rocks on August 13

    moe. and Twiddle have announced a co-headlining show with special guest Pigeons Playing Ping Pong on August 13 at Red Rocks in Morrison, CO.

    The weekend will kick off at Boulder Theater with moe. and Twiddle trading off acoustic and electric sets on August 11 and 12. Tickets go on sale February 17 through moe.org and Twiddlemusic.com
    Multi-day, VIP and GA tickets will be available Friday, February 17.

  • John Prine Brings His Illegal Smile to Albany

    John Prine, the “songwriter’s songwriter,” is busy touring. He makes a stop in Albany in July to share his classic tunes.john prinePrine is known as the “songwriter’s songwriter” as many legendary artists have recorded his music, including Carly Simon, Johnny Cash, John Denver and Bonnie Raitt. His catalog includes classic songs like “Angel from Montgomery,” “Sam Stone,” “Paradise,” and “Hello in There.” At 70, he is still actively touring.

    Prine heads out on a month-long European tour in April after playing a handful of dates stateside. He makes stops in nearby Hershey, PA on March 31 at the Hershey Theatre and Newark, NJ on April 1 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, both shows with Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams. Upon his return from Europe, he plays some shows in the maritime provinces in Canada.

    Prine makes a stop at Albany’s Palace Theatre on Friday, July 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show go on sale tomorrow, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. with prices ranging from $38 to $102.50.

  • Greensky Bluegrass Arrive in the Empire State

    Greensky Bluegrass is making their way north this week, heading for The Westcott Theater in Syracuse on Wednesday the 25. They then make stops at Playstation Theater in NYC on January 28 and The Egg in Albany on January 31. This marks the first time playing each of these venues for Greensky, whose progressive bluegrass style has created an impressive following across the country. Joining Greensky are the Portland, Oregon bluegrass sensation Fruition, a rootsy and eclectic troupe that will easily win over fans on the east coast.

    Since forming 17 years ago, Greensky Bluegrass has created their own version of bluegrass music, mixing the acoustic stomp of a string band with the rule-breaking spirit of rock & roll. The band, comprised of Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Mike Devol (upright bass) and Paul Hoffman (mandolin) released Shouted, Written Down & Quoted this past fall, garnering praise in our review:

    Greensky Bluegrass has taken the core idea of the typical bluegrass style and spiced it up with a twist of tones that bridge the gap between Americana and a rock flavor to create a perfectly balanced jam grass album.

  • Polyvamp Brooklyn Rooftop Jam

    Polyvamp looked to the skies when they rocked the Brooklyn waterfront for a rooftop jam session in Williamsburg back in October.

    Brooklyn-based six-piece electro-funk ensemble Polyvamp took to the roof of Cafe Biba in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on October 16 for a jam session. The event was filmed by Humza Deas, New York Magazine’s top Outlaw Instagrammer of New York City, using an overhead drone with views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline.

    Polyvamp is a groove-based funk, rock and electronic band formed in early 2015 initially as a trio, adding three additional musicians during their first year. They have played many of New York City’s top music venues and shared the stage with members of nationally touring acts, such as Lettuce, Kung Fu, Turkuaz and the Trey Anastasio Band. They performed at the city’s renowned CMJ Music Festival in October 2015.

    Polyvamp makes their Brooklyn Bowl debut on Tuesday, Jan. 24 when they perform along side Sprocket and the Insidious Rays.

  • Streamstock 2017, a Streaming Inauguration Day Music Fest

    Musicians have joined forces to livestream a concert, Streamstock, during Inauguration Day on Friday, Jan. 20, to protest the Inauguration of the 45th president of the U.S.young the giant streamstockStreamstock 2017, an online music and arts festival that describes itself as, “by the people and for the people,” will begin at the same time as the Inaugural Address to raise awareness for various progressive causes.

    The festival’s lineup includes Young The Giant, Umphrey’s Mcgee, Reed Mathis & Electric Beethoven, Lettuce, Holly Bowling and more. Additionally, Bill Kreutzmann, drummer of the Grateful Dead, will debut his new project, Bill Kreutzmann’s Rooster Conspiracy, exclusively for the event.

    The festival reached out to the public asking for musicians, spoken word artists and poets to submit videos of their work to be a part of the performance. Besides the performance, Streamstock’s main goal is looking to promote progressive causes supported by themselves and the bands on the lineup.

    The grassroots project hopes the event will help bring awareness to groups like the NAACP, ACLA, GLAAD, Women’s Rights and Environmental Organizations, Standing Rock and more, which they feel will need additional support under the Trump presidency.

  • Mike Powell & the Black River Making 2017 Debut Saturday

    Mike Powell returns to Syracuse this Saturday. However, he won’t be wielding the lacrosse stick that helped him become the all-time leading scorer with Syracuse University’s acclaimed lacrosse program. This time he comes packing his guitar and his new band, Mike Powell and The Black River.

    The show, at Funk ‘n Waffles Downtown, will feature Powell playing double duty. He’ll open the show with his solo material, which should be heavy on music from his latest album Tied to the Rail (reviewed here by NYS Music in December).  Powell’s solo material draws heavy influence from Bob Dylan and John Prine. His soulful voice and deep lyrics take the listener on an introspective ride. The Boston Globe has called him, “a polite rebel; a truly unique and inspiring American voice.”

    Mike Powell Black RiverFollowing Powell’s solo set, his band The Black River, named after the North Country waterway of the same name where Powell was raised, joins him for a set of high energy indie/soul/rock.

    The band (guitarist John Hanus, bassist Joe Bell, keyboardist Shane Kelson and Dom Scicchitano on the drums) formed in October of 2016 and has been busy laying down tracks at Big Blue North Recording Studio in Utica for its debut album, scheduled to arrive in March.

    Doors open at 6:30 and Powell’s solo set will begin at 7. Tickets, available via Ticket Fly or at the door, are $10.

  • 6th Annual Wintercourse at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn

    On Friday, Jan. 20, the 6th Annual Wintercourse will be held at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn for an evening with some of the area’s top acts, known as The Brooklyn Jam Syndicate: Teddy Midnight, Cousin Earth, Space Bacon and Chromatropic.

    wintercourseThe evening will kick off with Teddy Midnight taking the stage at 8:30 p.m. Teddy Midnight delivers a mix of progressive rock, drum and bass, jazz and downtempo at their shows; a self-titled genre they term as “Electro-Dance-Funk.” They’ve played sold out shows at other prominent NYC establishments like Irving Plaza, Brooklyn Bowl, Gramercy Theater and Bowery Ballroom. They’ve shared the stage with Dopapod, Consider the Source, The Werks, Twiddle and other successful touring acts.

    Cousin Earth will take the stage at 9:45 p.m. Cousin Earth is a progressive ukulele rock band, and you can expect anything from bluegrass to electronica from this Brooklyn act with a wide repertoire of both original and cover songs. They have played over 170 shows throughout the Northeast United States, from Maine to Pennsylvania, and have shared the stage with other acts like Melvin Seals and the Jerry Garcia Band, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Future Folk, Andy Frasco, Rustic Overtones, and many more. Their full-length album is set to be released sometime this year.

    Space Bacon will take over at 11 p.m. to keep the evening going. This local four-piece act will bring their own version of progressive electronica & funk rock. The name “Space Bacon” emerged from the love of Kevin Bacon and Kevin Spacey. At the end of 2016, the group released a “Best of 2016” digital album of their best performances of the year.

    Rounding off the evening, Chromatropic will be the last act at 12:15 a.m. Their sound is described as “live organic neo-psychedelia,” and they deliver a truly original show that you don’t want to miss.

  • The Year of Agony Continues, Life of Agony Announces New East Coast Dates

    Brooklyn’s Life of Agony is looking to make 2017 a huge year.  They recently announced the arrival of their long awaited album A Place Where There’s No Pain, and last week announced a full U.S. tour on the East Coast.  The tour kicks off in Allston, MA and finishes in Sayreville, NJ.  The dates include April 28 in New York City at the Irving Plaza (CD Release show), April 29 at Poughkeepsie’s The Chance Theater (with Sworn Enemy opening) and Long Island’s Mulcahy’s host a show as well on May 13.  Check out all the tour dates below.

    The band has yet to release full songs online and have not performed any of the new material live, so this tour is the perfect opportunity to hear the classics and the new material live for the first time.  All of these shows are expected to sell fast so it is recommended not to wait to get them at the door.
