    Melanie Martinez: An Album Retrospective

Martinez’s Trilogy Tour followed her journey as an artist through her 3 existing albums: Crybaby, K-12, and Portals. Her debut studio album, Cry Baby, was released in 2015. It was a concept album that told the story of a character named Cry Baby through whimsical yet dark songs.

Her sophomore album, K-12, released in 2019. This continued the story of Cry Baby with a corresponding feature film; showcasing Melanie’s talents not just as a musician but also as a filmmaker and storyteller.

In 2022, Portals explored themes of rebirth and transformation, marked by an ethereal and otherworldly aesthetic. Known for her theatrical live performances, Melanie’s concerts are immersive experiences that blend music, visual art, and storytelling.

    Album 1: Crybaby

The concert began with a bang as Melanie appeared on an elevated platform for “Crybaby,” dressed in a pink cotton dress surrounded by dancers in bunny ears and “crybaby” costumes. The stage backdrop featured cradle imagery, setting the tone for the whimsical and dark narrative that defines the Crybaby album. Fans dressed in elf ears, dresses, and bows screamed in delight as the platform gradually lowered, seamlessly transitioning into “Doll House.” Here, Melanie and her dancers performed a doll-like choreography, with expressive movements that visually spelled out “d-o-l-l-h-o-u-s-e.”

The attention to detail continued with “Sippy Cup,” where her dress swayed to the beat as she reached the main stage. The show maintained its high energy with “Carousel,” featuring a two-headed rabbit carousel and pyrotechnics that mirrored the burning carousel imagery. For “Alphabet Boy,” Melanie rose on a platform stylized as alphabet blocks. During “Soap,” actual bubbles filled the stage, enchanting the audience.

“Pity Party” brought inflatable candles to the stage, with heart-shaped balloons falling from the ceiling during the song’s climax. Melanie’s playful use of a pink axe added a dramatic flair, much to the crowd’s delight. The first album segment concluded with “Play Date” and “Mad Hatter,” with Melanie disappearing in a cloud of smoke.

    Album 2: K-12

Transitioning into the K-12 segment, the stage transformed into a school bus that landed in front of a school backdrop, revealing Melanie in her schoolgirl costume. The nostalgic “Wheels on the Bus” set the stage for the school-themed songs, including “Class Fight,” where Melanie and a dancer balanced on a seesaw.

“Show and Tell” saw Melanie as a marionette, complete with ribbons tied to her wrists, which she dramatically broke free from at the song’s end. The theatricality continued with “Nurses Office,” where Melanie was wheeled out on a gurney by dancers dressed as nurses. “Strawberry Shortcake” featured Melanie on a platform stylized as a strawberry shortcake, glowing ethereally.

“Lunchbox Friends” depicted a narrative acted out by dancers, while “Teacher’s Pet” was a solo performance with Melanie emerging from a desk, rolling on the ground, and utilizing fire pyrotechnics. “High School Sweethearts” featured dancers parading with lit-up sweetheart candies bearing cheeky messages, culminating with Melanie being “shot” by a cupid’s arrow on screen and lowered beneath the stage.

    Album 3: Portals

The final segment, focusing on the Portals album, began with “DEATH,” aligning with the theme of rebirth. Melanie appeared in a floral, earthy dress with a fairy/alien mask, surrounded by dancers in minimalist forest nymph attire. The stage transformed into a cemetery, complete with giant headstones and a gate opening on the screen.

In “VOID,” Melanie danced with her mask on against a backdrop of a wispy black void. “TUNNEL VISION” featured a light ring that followed her, creating a mesmerizing effect. “FAERIE SOIREE” brought inflatable mushrooms to the stage, while “LIGHT SHOWER” had Melanie sitting on a giant slug prop, twirling gracefully.

“SPIDER WEB” saw Melanie donning wings on a platform, accompanied by a dancer in a fly costume, portraying a passionate young fan. “BATTLE OF THE LARYNX” was a dramatic solo performance where Melanie wielded a sword against a dragon on screen, complete with intense fire pyrotechnics.

Night One of Melanie Martinez’s Madison Square Garden run was a spectacular blend of music, theatrics, and storytelling. Each song was a meticulously crafted experience, demonstrating Melanie’s unparalleled attention to detail and artistic integrity. From her set designs and elaborate costumes to her dynamic choreography and powerful vocals, Melanie proved why she remains a trailblazer in the music industry. Her return to New York was nothing short of triumphant, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what she will create next.

For two guys who have performed at MSG more than any others – 149 times for Joel, and at least 89 times for Anastasio between Phish and TAB shows (not including guest appearances for either) – you’d think the collaboration was bound to happen, eventually at least. So the night before Billy Joel says farewell to MSG with his 150th career performance and the end of his monthly residency.

    • Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats Announce MSG Concert

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats have announced a US Arena Tour, including a NYC date at Madison Square Garden. This tour celebrates the group’s fourth studio album South of Here, which releases June 28.

Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats

Nathaniel Rateliff is a Denver-based singer-songwriter renowned for his gruff voice and songwriting prowess. Rateliff’s group The Night Sweats hit the mainstream with their gold-certified 2015 self-titled debut. Since his breakout, Rateliff has collaborated with folk legends, including Paul Simon and Willie Nelson. Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant has lauded Rateliff’s music, calling him “one of these guys that will just carry the torch. Beautiful songwriting, beautiful singing, great delivery.” Rateliff is already carrying that torch, inspiring a new generation of folk artists, including stars Noah Kahan and Orville Peck. Across their 3 studio albums, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats have grown their catalog, and honed their dynamic performances.

In the lead to their national tour, the band is releasing their fourth studio album South of Here. This new album reckons with love, loss, and hope during a life full of trauma. The songs bear Rateliff’s soul through his vivid storytelling, and the Night Sweat’s R&B-influenced Americana instrumentals. Rateliff hopes “these songs and stories give you an opportunity to better understand your own struggles whatever they may be.” The band collaborated with producer Brad Cook, straight off work with Waxahachie and Bon Ives, to engineer the album. The album is set to release June 28 via Stax.

The album’s lead single “Heartless” has already hit #1 on Americana radio and #5 on Triple A Charts. Accompanying this single is a new music video directed by the award-winning Kimberly Stuckwisch. Stuckwisch, who has previously worked with Olivia Rodrigo, based the video around the idea of finding freedom through arts. She says ” “Growing up in an impoverished part of Kentuckiana I often found myself running away from my upbringing diving headfirst into books, studies, writing, and theater.” This music video plays into Rateliff’s lyrical themes about moving out West from his childhood hometown in Missouri.

This arena tour comes after a 2022 sold-out concert at Denver’s Ball Arena, which launched their career to new heights. Starting on August 15 in Oregon, the band will snake their way Eastward across the country, before closing out the tour with a MSG show on March 27.

    • Nicki Minaj Pink Friday 2 Tour Adds Queens, Buffalo Dates

Dubbed the Queen of Hip Hop, Nicki Minaj has announced her highly anticipated tour, showcasing her brand new album Pink Friday 2. She will stop at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, March 30, and Barclays Center on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Additionally, Minaj has announced shows in Buffalo on September 14 and in Queens on October 11.

For the finale of the tour, Nicki will make her return to Queens for one final show in her hometown after a total of over 80 shows across the globe.

Nicki Minaj became “the first woman to score 100 Billboard Hot 100 Hits” with an astounding 133 total entries to date (the most among female hip-hop acts). These include three #1’s, over 70 Top 40 hits (also a record among female hip-hop acts), and 23 Top 10’s (another record among female hip-hop acts). As a songwriter, she also holds the record for the “Most Billboard Hot 100 Entries Among Women in the 2010s.”

Minaj has set the tone in music, fashion, and beauty for more than a decade. Her seminal song “Super Bass” surpassed one billion YouTube views, entering history alongside the likes of “Anaconda.” As such, she has emerged as “the first female rapper to cross the one billion mark with multiple solo tracks.” With nine videos receiving more than one billion views thus far, she has earned “the most videos with over one billion views for any female artist.”

Her supremacity can be traced back to her landmark debut Pink Friday in 2010, which sold 375,000 copies in its first week according to MRC Data. It made history by achieving “the largest sales week for a female hip-hop artist since Lauryn Hill in 1998.” In 2022 she released “Super Freaky Girl,” which impressively debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other accolades she acquired were “the female rapper with the most solo Top 10 albums in Billboard 200 history,” “the most-awarded rapper at the American Music Awards,” and “the first female rapper with over 30 billion Spotify streams across her catalog.”

In addition to music, Nicki Minaj has made numerous TV and film appearances, including as a judge on American Idol along with film roles in 2014’s The Other Woman, 2016’s Barbershop: The Next Cut, and voiceover for Ice Age: Continental Drift. She has landed high-profile deals with Fendi, Adidas, H&M, Diesel, Mercedes-Benz, Sprint, and Pepsi, released a nail polish collection with OPI, and was the face of MAC’s Viva Glam campaign. Not to mention, she is a co-owner of TIDAL, and her BEATS 1 QUEEN radio show stands out as “the highest-rated show in Apple Music history.”

    • In Focus: Olivia Rodrigo Brings Pop-Rock Star Power to Sold-Out Madison Square Garden Shows

Pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo brought the house down April 9 at Madison Square Garden, marking the last of four sold-out shows at the famed arena for her ongoing world tour. Fans decked out in purple, sequins, and feather-trimmed cowboy hats filled the venue, eager to sing along to Rodrigo’s 2023 angsty pop-rock album GUTS

After an opening set from 90s alternative rock favorites The Breeders, Rodrigo’s crowd of young, spirited supporters screamed with excitement as four 3D candles—spelling out GUTS, of course—were projected on stage. When the wax melted, Rodrigo would make her much-anticipated appearance.

Electric guitars crashed as a platform lifted Rodrigo to center stage, kicking off the show with her upbeat single “bad idea right?” Decked out in a sparkling silver outfit for the start of the show, Rodrigo worked the full stage from the moment she appeared, sprinting from one catwalk to another, dancing with her musicians, and interacting with fans in the crowd.

Rodrigo’s setlist featured nearly every song from GUTS and her debut album, SOUR, plus a few surprises, including an unexpected duet with special guest Jewel. Backed by eight skilled backup dancers and eye-catching effects—a significant upgrade in production value from her 2022 Sour Tour—Rodrigo put on a dazzling show, radiating confidence throughout.

Whether seated at a grand piano, shredding on the electric guitar, or floating on a giant crescent moon above the crowd, Rodrigo brought an electrifying energy to the MSG stage. Her seamless transitions between heart-wrenching ballads and early 2000s-style pop rock anthems kept the audience on the edge of their seats. As star-shaped confetti rained from the arena ceiling throughout the final notes of “get him back!,” Rodrigo danced her way backstage, triumphantly closing a show that certainly solidified her superstar status.

    • Glass Animals Announce “Tour Of Earth” With a Stop at MSG This Summer

English rock band Glass Animals have announced their North American and UK/Europe 2024 “Tour Of Earth” which will include a show at the Madison Square Garden (MSG) on August 13.

      Glass Animals MSG

With the tour announcement, the Grammy nominated band Glass Animals have also shared the details of their highly anticipated fourth studio album, I Love You So F***ing Much, which is set for release on July 19. The album is introduced by the band’s new single accompanied by the visualizer “Creatures in Heaven,” which is out to stream everywhere.

The band’s upcoming album, I Love You So F***ing Much is the follow-up to their 2020’s critically acclaimed album Dreamland, which sold over 12 million copies globally and gave life to their single “Heat Waves,” which became the band’s record-breaking song. The single was the  the first song by a British band since the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” which went number one in 1995 for five consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, and also their  first song to reach number one with a single writer and producer since Pharell’s “Happy”.

The four-man band’s line-up consists of Dave Bayley on vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums, songwriting, Drew MacFarlane on guitar, keyboards, backing vocals, Edmund Irwin-Singer on bass, keyboards, backing vocals, and Joe Seaward on drums. When talking about the upcoming album, the band’s frontman Dave found himself struggling to make sense of this newfound global stardom, having watched it all happen while the world was in lockdown.

He shared, “Life can change dramatically, but sometimes you aren’t able to change as quickly on a personal level. You end up feeling like a spectator. And then you are asked and expected to be a certain type of person, a different person. But…I wasn’t sure how. It confused me to the point of not knowing who I was or if anything was real.” It took being stranded on a cliff in a wooden house on stilts during one of California’s biggest storms in history to push that feeling into a full existential crisis.

In forced isolation, watching trees tumble down mountains and assuming “death was coming,” Dave began asking questions of himself, of the universe, and of the human experience: namely, love. As he came to accept himself as an introvert, Dave realized that “human connection and the love between us is much bigger, more important, and more complex than anything else”. “Creatures in Heaven” is the sublime first glimpse into ten intimate love stories set against the backdrop of the universe.

Glass Animals’ Tour Of Earth will include key support acts from Kevin Abstract, Eyedress,  Blondshell and The Big Moon. Tickets will be available starting with an artist presale beginning on April 9 at 10 AM. Additional pre sales will run throughout the week ahead of the general on-sale beginning on Thursday, April 11 at 10 AM at glassanimals.com.
