James Taylor Announces 2025 Tour, CMAC Stop in June

Legendary singer/songwriter James Taylor has announced his 2025 summer tour with his All-Star Band, covering 24 shows across the US and Canada.

The show’s penultimate performance will take place at Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center, colloquially known as CMAC.

The tour will see Taylor & His All-Star Band perform at a number of iconic venues and will kick off on May 5th in Phoenix, AZ and will conclude on July 1st in Gilford, NH.

As a recording and touring artist, James Taylor has touched people with his warm baritone voice and distinctive style of guitar-playing for more than 50 years, while setting a precedent to which countless young musicians have aspired. Over the course of his celebrated songwriting and performing career, Taylor has sold more than 100 million albums, earning gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards since the release of his self-titled debut album in 1968. In 2015, Taylor released Before This World, the first-ever #1 album of his illustrious career.

Taylor has won multiple GRAMMY Awards, has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and the prestigious Songwriters Halls of Fame and in February 2006, The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences selected him its MUSICARES Person of the Year. Taylor was also awarded the distinguished Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government and the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in 2012.

In November of 2015, Taylor was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nation’s highest civilian honor and in December of 2016 he received the Kennedy Center Honors, which are presented annually to individuals who have enriched American culture by distinguished achievement in the performing arts. In early 2020 Taylor released Break Shot, a deeply personal and authentic audio-only memoir detailing his first 21 years. He also released his newest album, American Standard, his 19th studio album, which earned Taylor the 2021 GRAMMY Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and gave him the honor of being the first artist to have a Billboard Top 10 album in each of the past six decades.

Supporting Taylor will be Tiny Habits, a Boston-bred band that has been praised by the likes of NPR and The New Yorker. Last year, the group opened for Gracie Abrams on her North American and Australian tour dates, and also opened for Noah Kahan on his European tour. They have performed with Lizzy McAlpine on her Tiny Desk appearance, harmonized with Kacey Musgraves and Laufey among many others. The Habits released their debut album All For Something via Mom+Pop records in May of 2024. The band hit the road supporting Vance Joy and Lake Street Dive while finishing 2024 with a headline tour of Australia. Their latest single, ‘For Sale Sign’ with Lizzy McAlpine is out now.

Blues Rockers Tedeschi Trucks Band Dazzle Fans at CMAC

It was the perfect summer night with just a little rain mixed in for Tedeschi Trucks Band to perform at Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) in Canandaigua, New York, on Friday, August 16.

The 12-piece powerhouse band took no time getting most of the crowd on their feet to set everyone up for a night of moving and grooving with their soulful, bluesy, rock and roll. The night featured a mix of the band’s original music with some cover songs thrown into the setlist. They relied heavily on songs from their most recent album I am the Moon, released in 2022.
Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi are music superstars, and they surround themselves with superb musicians. With such a large band, everyone gets a chance to show off their skills throughout the night.

Tedeschi sings most of the vocals throughout most of the night and she has a powerful, incredible voice that demands attention. Mike Mattison also gets to share his voice on many of the songs and his passion comes through with so much soul on the songs he gets to sing.

The whole night was full of crescendos and deep, meaningful music. The band leads into many of the songs very softly, then just builds everything up to this massive explosion of music from everyone on stage. Many of the bandmembers get their time to shine with solos.
The show got off moving and grooving with high energy with “Part Of Me” and continued through “Playing My Emotions” and then “Ain’t That Something,” with keyboardist Gabe Dixon taking the lead on vocals and trading off with Tedeschi.

Mattison got his first chance to show off his bluesy voice as the band covered Bessie Smith’s “Gin House Blues.”

Tedeschi put down the guitar to sing “All The Love” and slowed things down a bit after this one as Trucks and other bandmembers left the stage with Tedeschi and drums, keys and bass. She performed the popular John Prine cover “Angel From Montgomery” that segued into Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree” and topped the sandwich off by going back into “Angel From Montgomery.”

Coming back from this slower, somber moment, the full band came back out and kicked it back into high gear for the big hit “Anyhow,” which had the crowd back on their feet and just has such an epic feel to it. Tedeschi then sang “Sweet & Low,” another song off 2013’s Made Up Mind and Elizabeth Lea had a big trombone solo.

The band then played a couple covers with “Keep On Growing” by Derek and the Dominos, and Mattison took lead on Taj Mahal’s “Everybody’s Got to Change Sometime.” Then “Circles ‘Round The Sun” let Kebbi Williams loose on the saxophone. Tedeschi and other members then went off stage to let Trucks jam out on the long “Pasaquan” jam that also featured “Mountain Jam” sandwiched in the middle, a nod to Trucks’ past with The Allman Brothers Band. Trucks melted faces with his incredible guitar playing and the drummers Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady got to highlight their instruments with some sort of a duel.

The band then played “Just Won’t Burn,” a song from Tedeschi’s personal discography that came out more than 25 years ago. She really lets her bluesy voice do its thing on this one. The set eventually closed with “Show me a Woman,” a cover by Joe Tex, as the band left the stage in high spirits to get ready for an encore.

Only half of the band came out with Tedeschi and she invited opening act Margo Price to sing the George Jones song “Color of the Blues.” Then to really send everyone on their way, the full band came out along with all of Margo Price’s band as the 17 musicians on stage performed Leon Russell’s “Stranger in A Strange Land.”

Margo Price’s opening set was a real treat for those who settled in early. The country singer-songwriter played a set fit for a headliner at CMAC. She really rocked the house with her good singing and her band really brought some power rock to the mix. Her sweet voice will sweep you off your feet, but that band will have you dancing really hard and almost headbanging.

Jason Mraz takes Canandaigua on special ride

Two-time Grammy Award winner, Jason Mraz, hit the stage at CMAC on Wednesday, July 10. Bringing a night of positive and inspirational messages, Mraz rocked the Northeast shore of Canandaigua Lake, along with Ripe and The Molly Miller Trio in support of his 2023 release, Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride.

With the threat of tornados from Buffalo to Canandaigua throughout the day, Mraz and fans were keeping a close on the weather. As Mraz hit stage around 830, it was clear that many fans decided to stay home. Thanks to venue staff for doing the right thing, as many lawn patrons were offered seats under the cover of the shell.

Getting the night started was Ripe. Fronted by Robbie Wulfsohn, Ripe is a highly energetic pop-funk band from the Boston area. Formed while studying at Berklee College of Music and working through the pandemic, Ripe has developed a mini cult-like following of music fans of all ages that keeps on growing. Pairing with the powerful voice of Wulfsohn were Christian Yogi Saint-Louis on guitar, Sampson Hellerman on drums, Jon Becker on Bass, Calvin Barthel on Trombone.

Opening for an act like Jason Mraz might be intimidating for some, but for these guys, not even the weather was intimidating as they dominated their set. Both Wulfsohn and Becker were all over the stage, never skipping a beat.

As Mraz took the stage donning a retro looking fit, the crowd is energized and ready to dance the night away, a common theme at Jason’s shows. Joining him on the stage that was backlit by large display screen was his Superband, a collection of nine other artists who were all ready for a workout, including Molly Miller, Billy Galewood, and other members of Bushwalla.

“Getting Started” and “Feel Good Too” was the ideal pair of songs to get the set started. Both songs carry poppy, trippy, and happy vibes which set the tone for the next 90 minutes.

Before song three began, insight was offered up on the meaning of “The Remedy.” He went on to talk about a conversation with a high school friend who had a deep conversation with him around age 20 and told Mraz of his recent cancer diagnosis. Definitely, not something anyone wishes to deal with but sadly becomes part of life. In an ode to his friend and the most positive outlook one could have in his situation, “The Remedy” was born. Mraz continued on saying that this friend is alive and well today, and recently celebrated his birthday.

Admittedly, I could not name more than one song from Jason Mraz before the show. As the night progressed, I recognized several, not realizing who the artist was. Not realizing the level of talent I was listening to. Guitarist, lyricist, dancer, and story teller, Jason Mraz offers it all and delivery is second to none.

As he continues his set, he adds in wit and banter related to each song, or the weather as he cracked a couple tornado jokes. He even ‘Rick Rolled’ the Canandaigua crowd. Introducing a song, he began to talk about a special guest who join in him on stage, as he called out Colbie Caillat, an artist who he has collaborated with previously. After a brief pause, he added “…Could not make it tonight” and immediately went into Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

Keeping the jokes going, he offered alternate lyrics to “Pancakes & Butter,” his song about waiting for someone special because they pair well together. Trying to keep straight face, Mraz started singing about Rochester and garbage plates instead of “Pancakes & Butter.” Apparently, the former didn’t flow, and he had to scrap the idea.

As the night concluded with “I Feel Like Dancing,” Mraz was joined on stage with Ripe and they danced the night away. Artists pairing up with each other and creating an amazing scene on stage as the entire crowd is up screaming for more. A very fitting conclusion to a very uplifting show.

Norah and Mavis: Legendary Ladies Marvelous in Western New York

Western New York’s summer got a little brighter as Norah Jones’ latest tour with Mavis Staples blew through CMAC in Canandaigua and ArtPark in Lewiston on July 5th and 6th, despite the rains pouring down Friday night in Canandaigua.

Gospel legend, civil rights icon and sole surviving and torch-bearing Staples Singer, Mavis Staples and her band of bass, drums, guitar and backup singers, took the stage first. She needed assistance walking to the front of the stage, and took some breaks with a seat and some sips of tea in between songs, but when the mic was in front of her, she was a ball of fire. The stage, and the entire venue, was in her control.

Her voice, gravelly and soulful, belted out affirmations of love, for oneself, others, and of course God. Like a preacher from the pulpit, in case you missed the message, she repeated it a couple more times in her banter.

The set mixed Staples classics like “I’m Just a Soldier,” and “Heavy Makes Too Happy,” with Gospel standards like “I Belong to the Band, Hallelujah!” and more contemporary rock hits like Funkadelic’s “Can You Get to That” and the Talking Heads’ “Slippery People.” Mavis molded these latter tunes to her will, secular messages becoming spiritual. “What’s the matter with him? He’s alright. How do you know? The Lord won’t mind.” hits a little different coming from mouth of Mavis Staples than it does from David Byrne.

As Mavis was helped back off stage after her 45 minutes, she and her band received a rare and well-deserved opening-set standing ovation. One performance from a legendary lady in the books, one more to come.

After a short break, Norah Jones took the stage with Brian Blade behind the drums and Josh Lattanzi on bass, opening their set with “What Am I To You” off Jones’ second album Feels Like Home. Then just minutes in, Mavis Staples came back out to perform “I’ll Be Gone” which she recorded with Jones in 2019. Certainly an early-set show highlight to be blessed with both iconic voices playing off each other. Pete Remm, who wrote the song, was also on board on organ for that and off and on for the remainder of the show.

With that out of the way, Jones’ invited the rest of her band out, Sasha Dobson on guitar and vocals and Sami Stevens on keys and vocals. They kicked into some material from her stellar new release, Visions, with “Paradise” and “Running” before dropping back to early hit “Sunrise.”

The set continued to span her entire catalog, each song it’s own gift. Perfect little moments of musical joy popped out here and there, each tied off in a colorful bow, like from the streamers hanging as a backdrop. A singular smile-inducing note to close “Running,” beautifully bowed bass in “Sunrise,” Blade’s infectious groove in “Staring at the Wall,” the three-part vocal round on “I’m Awake.” Attentive ears were rewarded with these plentiful gifts throughout the night.

As Staples could bend a songs meaning to her will, Jones could likewise bend entire genres to her will. On the hushed and haunting “Little Broken Hearts,” she took on an indie-rock persona, strapping on a guitar. Then on “Queen of the Sea” she was belting out a country ballad. Her classic “Come Away With Me” was stripped back to the trio, with spare upright bass notes and subtle drums, it was Jones at her jazziest, taking control with her piano and voice. But she isn’t a rocker, singer/songwriter, country crooner, jazz musician or pop star. She’s Norah Jones and there’s no one else sounding quite like her.

She waited until the encore for the lone cover of the night, Tom Waits’ “Long Way Home,” before closing out the night properly with her classic hit “Don’t Know Why,”

Goose Flies to New Heights at CMAC

Nestled in the picturesque rolling hills of Canandaigua, CMAC proved to be the perfect setting for an wonderful evening of music with Goose, the jam band phenomenon that has been capturing hearts and ears across the country.

As the sun dipped below the horizon after a bluebird day, casting a golden glow over the amphitheater, Goose took to the stage amidst thunderous applause. The band’s lineup—comprising Rick Mitarotonda on guitar and vocals, Peter Anspach on keyboard, guitar and vocals, Trevor Weekz on bass, Jeff Arevalo on percussion and Cotter Ellis on drums —immediately set a vibrant tone with their eclectic mix of rock, funk, jazz, and electronic elements. Known for their improvisational prowess, Goose wasted no time in diving into extended jams.

The first set started off strong with “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet,” and then “Mr. Action,” followed by a blistering cover of “Me and My Uncle,” the song by John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas that was made famous by the Grateful Dead and one of the highlights of the show. “Seekers on the Ridge” Parts 1 and 2 were followed by “Drive,” and then “So Ready” to end the first set.

Individually, each member of Goose shone brightly throughout the night. Mitarotonda’s soulful vocals and intricate guitar work provided the backbone of many songs, while Anspach’s keyboard solos added fiery bursts of energy to the mix. Weekz’ basslines were deep and resonant, anchoring the rhythm section alongside Ellis’ dynamic and precise drumming, which drove the band forward with relentless energy. The chemistry between the band members was palpable, with each musician feeding off the others’ energy to create moments of pure musical synergy.

Set 2 started off with a cover of “Fish in the Sea” by the New Zealand band Fat Freddy’s Drop. Then came another highlight of the night, “Tumble,” an extended jam where Goose brought the crowd to joyous heights with blissful high-energy guitar. Next was a serene “Red Bird,” followed by “726,” and then a lengthy “Arcadia” to end the set. The encore was a rocking “Madhuvan” that ended with a triumphal bow to thunderous applause.

Goose’s performance at CMAC was nothing short of spectacular. From their electrifying musical explorations to their heartfelt connection with the audience, Goose proved once again why they are at the forefront of the jam band scene. As they continue on the road, fans and new followers looking to catch the wave should be sure to pick up a ticket and treat themselves to a wonderful night of music.

In Focus: The Avett Brothers Bring Old Memories, New Music to CMAC

CMAC kicked off its summer concert season in a big way on Friday, May 24, with the much anticipated return by The Avett Brothers. The Avett Brothers, who last performed at CMAC in 2019, were joined by Sierra Ferrell.

It has been a long road for The Avett Brothers, now in their 24th year together. The North Carolina natives released their 11th studio album earlier this month, a self titled collection of ballads and rollicky folk-rock tracks which have helped the band build their passionate and devoted fanbase.

The evening kicked off with a brilliant set by Sierra Ferrell. Ferrell wasted no time getting the audience out of their seats and dancing along to her unique blend of folk and latin sounds. Seth Avett joined Ferrell early in the set to duet on the Steven Fromholz classic “I’d Have to be Crazy”, much to the joy of those in attendance. Ferrell closed out her set with the raucous “Fox Hunt”, which had the energy in the amphitheater boiling over like a pot of water.

After a short set change over, the Avett Brothers took the stage and wasted no time showcasing the beautiful harmonies fans have grown accustomed to. The band opened with an acapella duet between brothers Scott and Seth. The sounds segued brilliantly in to the opening track, the beautiful ballad, “Never Apart” off the band’s latest release. The band got the party moving next with the wild “Satan Pulls the Strings” which saw each band member taking a turn at the front of the stage to showcase their talents.

Through out the evening, the band brilliantly wove their new music with older fan favorites. The stunning new track “Cheap Coffee” held strong along side classic tracks like “Murder in the City”, “The Ballad of Love and Hate,” and “Laundry Room”.

Late in the set, the brothers reminisced on their past performances in the area. They spoke of their love for Canandaigua, and having vacationed there last year. The two praised the audience for the love and devotion they have shown the band since day one, a love not always reciprocated by the media. “Every night Seth says to me, ‘I love you, goodnight.’ We did not always get that from the media. Some of them loathed us. Some even compared us to muppets,” Scott proclaimed. With that, the stage lights dimmed on the band and a spotlight shone on ‘The Avetts’, a muppet version of the band, complete with their own instruments. ‘The Avetts’ would perform two tracks (with the brothers performing stage left, out of the spotlight), offering a reminder to never take yourself too seriously.

As the evening closed with the heartfelt “No Hard Feelings”, the band was met with a standing ovation, cheers, high fives and fist bumps. The message the audience sent back to the Avett Brothers was simple.

“We love you, goodnight”.

This summer, Canandaigua’s Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC), will feature 18 shows starting in May through August. The CMAC 2024 roster features artists spanning from rock to country, welcoming fans of all genres.

The Avett Brothers– May 24 at 7 PM

Grammy-nominated folk-rock band, The Avett Brothers, are kicking off CMAC’s 2024 season with their summer tour for the band’s brand new self-titled album released on May 17. Joining them as a guest is country and bluegrass artist Sierra Ferrell.

Zach Brown Band- June 2 at 6:30 PM

Over the past 22 years as a band, the multi-platinum southern rock group led by Zac Brown have had five consecutive #1 albums on Billboard’s Country Albums Chart and won three GRAMMY awards including Best New Artist, Best Country Collaboration with Vocals, and Best Country Album. After releasing their new live album From The Road, Vol. 1: Covers and two new singles, the band will bring plenty of music, new and old, to CMAC.

Former member of The Allman Brothers Band, The Dead, and founding member of Gov’t Mule, Warren Haynes is bringing the Now Is The Time tour to CMAC this summer featuring the Warren Haynes Band and The Dreams and Songs Symphonic Experience

Goose is a five-piece jam band hailing from Connecticut with clear influences from Phish and The Grateful Dead. Taking their 2024 summer tour on the road to support their latest album Ted Tapes 2024, the band will bring a slew of energetic music to Canandaigua.

Carrie Underwood- June 21 at 7:30 PM

Returning to the stage after last summer’s U.S. arena tour, multi-faceted country star Carrie Underwood, known for songs such as “Before He Cheats” and “Jesus Take the Wheel,” is making a stop at CMAC while on a break from her Las Vegas residency REFLECTION.

Brandi Carlile– June 29 at 7:30 PM

Nine-time GRAMMY winner Brandi Carlile returns to CMAC during a small tour of East Coast shows in June. She will be joined by her long-time collaborators, The Hanseroth Twins, who have played alongside her throughout her career. Jason Mraz & The Superband- July 10 at 7:30 PM

Singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, whose 2008 song “I’m Yours” put him on the radar, is continuing his tour, The Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride this summer, supporting his 2023 album of the same name. The alt-pop band Ripe will join the tour as a guest.

Sam Hunt- August 15 at 6:30 PM

Chart-topping country artist Sam Hunt, who can be recognized by his 2017 hit “Body Like A Back Road” is returning to the CMAC lineup while on tour for his new EP, Locked Up. He will be accompanied at CMAC by special guests and fellow country musicians Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line and Dalton Dover.

Tedeschi Trucks Band– August 16 at 7 PM

The 12-piece rock and soul group led by husband and wife Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi are returning to CMAC on their Deuces Wild 2024 tour, where country singer-songwriter Margo Price will join as their guest performer.

Goose Announce new Drummer, “Ted Tapes 2024,” Headline Tour Stopping at CMAC and Forest Hills

It is an exciting day to be a Goose fan as the rock quintet has announced they are bringing new drummer Cotter Ellis to the group, releasing Ted Tapes 2024, an album comprised of instrumental improvisations captured during Ellis’s auditions on drums. And if that wasn’t enough, the group kicks off their new headliner tour this summer, coming to CMAC on June 15 and Forest Hills Stadium on June 29.

Goose released their debut album in 2016 and quickly took flight, playing countless shows, and amassing a cult-like following. Known for their unique brand of irresistible songcraft, fluid musicianship, and spirited improvisational performance, the quintet’s 2022 critically acclaimed record Dripfield debuted at #2 on Billboard’s “Top New Artist Albums” chart.

They have spent much of the past decade on a seemingly infinite tour schedule that includes sold-out headline shows at renowned venues such as Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Nashville, TN’s Ryman Auditorium, and New York City’s hallowed Radio City Music Hall; a sold-out co-headline run alongside Trey Anastasio Band; a sold-out EU/UK headline tour, and show-stealing appearances at such festivals as Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Electric Forest, and Dead & Company’s Playing In The Sand in Riviera Cancun, MX. Recent highlights include a sold-out, five-night run at the historic Capitol Theater and 2023’s 10th annual Goosemas holiday celebration at Hampton, VA’s famed Hampton Coliseum.

“I first saw Cotter play with his band Swimmer at Nectar’s some years ago,” says Rick Mitarotonda. “I was sitting solo at one of the bar tables right in front of the stage with the PA ripping. The set was awesome, they’re all fantastic players and I was taken with the buoyant energy and how much fun they were having. Something had me glued to the drums though. His pocket and feel were gripping. He really told a story with his playing that night. It was an experience that always stuck with me.”

These Ted Tapes tracks are improvisational moments from the first few sessions with Cotter, recorded solely for the purpose of reference, not intended for any kind of release. The instruments and microphones were rigged up quickly, and the playing was raw and free from any expectations. The first track, “Leo,” is the opening pick up jam from the first session, the first notes ever played together. There were some consistent threads we all felt in the room throughout these early sessions; ease of communication, freely flowing ideas, and a feeling of effortlessness moving through different zones. We experienced a patience that allowed all of our personalities to come out and energy to well up in new ways. It feels like a door just beginning to open. We couldn’t be more stoked for what’s to come.
