  • Satellite Collective to present Multi-Disciplinary “Satellite Tribeca” this May

Satellite Collective will present Satellite Tribeca, at Satellite Gallery, over May 9-21 for two weekends of premieres and events from artists across all disciplines, plus new prints, projections, film and photography from featured artists Kevin Draper and Lora Robertson.

Formed in 2010, Satellite Collective features members of the New York City Ballet, visual artists, writers, and composers from across the country. Since then, Satellite has produced 14 seasons of multi-disciplinary work in New York City with an imposing cross section of the city’s young talent. Satellite has evolved since its inception, spinning off several dance and arts nonprofits, and incubates artists collaborating as equals. The company designs performances, arts exchanges, and publications that bring talented artists from all disciplines to work together.

Satellite is working in a new kind of venue for the collective. We are bringing the athletic performance and production values of our performing arts work into a gallery space. Here, we have the opportunity to engage in longer conversations with our audience and more prominently feature the compelling visual artists driving Satellite’s collaborations.

Satellite Tribeca is designed to foster intimate moments in a classic New York gallery space. In addition to new prints and projections from featured artist Kevin Draper and new film and photography by featured artist Lora Robertson, the Tribeca Show will consist of two busy weekends of new music, dance, discussion, and visual art, and film presented by Satellite Collective. Satellite Tribeca will include direct art experience with panels, performances, visual art, screenings, and a view into how creativity informs collaboration.

    KEVIN DRAPER

Satellite Tribeca will also reveal the New York premiere of Sad Blimp Twins, a pair of forty foot long blimps coming to New York for the first time as Satellite’s official mascots. Sad Blimp Twins are a pair of aerostats designed to fly from tall masts and act as cinema screens for public performances. They first flew on the lawn of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and will premiere in New York inside the gallery at 101 Reade Street. At full inflation, the blimps are fourteen feet in diameter and nearly forty feet long. Designed by Kevin Draper, they act as reminders of distant technologies of observation.

    SITE SPECIFIC DANCE

NYC Premiere of BODYSONNET’S “please come alone”

From creator-performers Moscelyne ParkeHarrison and Mio Ishikawa of BODYSONNET, “please come

alone” is a series of solo dance performances exploring what it means to be alone, and to come together. In the piece, performers participate in exercises to explore their artistic and narrative values as they devise movement solos. Each performer’s process will culminate in a twenty-minute movement score that shares the same music score and includes movement references to the other solo. The soloists rehearse apart from each other, thus experiencing each other’s work for the first time in performance.

The work was originally performed in The Berkshires, MA in June 2021, and workshopped further with

MFA drama students at Yale University in winter 2021 with Dramaturg Hannah Gellman.

GIANT PRINTS ON CANVAS, PHOTOGRAPHS ON METAL, and BLIMP MASCOTS

Reception for visual artists Kevin Draper and Lora Robertson and New York premiere of “Sad Blimp Twins”

Open to the public; Register for a free show poster

Kevin Draper’s show “The Cartoon Before The Movie” features large scale prints on paper and canvas created with aerospace 3D software and innovative hand printing techniques. Beginning with nostalgic imagery of an older New York, the imagery looks out toward space, along the avenues of Central Park and the sidewalks of Park Avenue, and sees a future of artificial intelligence and buildings seeking autonomy. Images feature bold industrial colors and a unique, expressionistic use of the architectural drafting language.

Lora Robertson’s show “Agony In The Scrub Pines” features large, complex photographic compositions reproduced on smooth sheet metal. Robertson works with digital cameras produced as part of the Hubble telescope program, and the intense focus on color and light is almost pre-Raphaelite in complexity. With her digital tools Robertson translates the naturalistic settings and historical lighting techniques into photographs that are easily mistaken for paintings until a closer view shows how these have been brought into the present with a wily eye for metaphor and visual easter eggs.

Sad Blimp Twins” are a pair of forty foot long blimps coming to New York for the first time as Satellite’s official mascots. Satellite intends to continue development of Sad Blimp Twins and their use as mobile cinema screens.

Stelth Ulvang premieres “The Heartbeats of Stars” inspired by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan’s data capture of love that left our galaxy on Voyager’s gold record. This solo performance for piano and accordion is a meditation on the many orbits in two lives, and the many points of intersection between them.

And Upstream, with 2023 Leonard Bernstein Award Winner Will Healy, debuts violin-piano duo Upstream with George Meyer, performing a live program of co-compositions for piano, cello, viola, violin by these Juilliard-trained composers, reaching into hip-hop, bluegrass, and jazz.

Between and among world tours, Stelth Ulvang of the Lumineers has crafted spoken word and developed scores and theme songs for Satellite Collective films. He first appeared with Satellite on the stage of BAM Fisher.

Liar Lear King” premiered in 2022, co-produced by Grand Rapids Ballet with choreography by San Francisco Ballet Alum and Oregon Ballet Theater Artistic Director Danielle Rowe, score by Brooklyn-based composer and indie classical phenom Ellis Ludwig-Leone, and film and scenery by Kevin Draper and Lora Robertson. In the runup to the New York premiere of the full ballet, the full thirty minute score will be performed live at Satellite Gallery, 101 Reade Street, with Ludwig-Leone conducting. “Liar Lear King” explores themes of narcissism and bullying, and their impact on our families.

Juilliard-trained composer and bandleader Will Healey will present solo piano work inspired by his Opus in development, Orbit – a piece that lays out a musical galaxy in which heavenly bodies interact, evolve, and eventually reach consciousness. Healy served as Music Director for the premiere of Aaron Severini’s score for “Echo & Narcissus” with Satellite Collective at BAM Fisher in 2018. This new work draws from Healy’s compositional experiments with hip-hop, jazz, and classical music.

ARTS PANEL w/FILM AND LIVE BALLET

The New York of Gordon Matta-Clark: Alive in the City Today”

Feature Performance: “Central Park, Earlier In Time”, inspired by Satellite Collective’s “Echo & Narcissus”

Panel moderator Paulina Ascencio Fuentes lives and works between Guadalajara and New York City. She has worked with the Gordon Matta-Clark archives and the Estate on several research projects and exhibitions. Her research outlines transdisciplinary modes of knowledge production and transmission.

Registration Required; includes performances and refreshments.

This intimate panel discussion will focus on creative collaborations between the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark and Satellite Collective, Site:Lab, and other arts organizations in the US and UK. Panelists will explore how Gordon Matta-Clark’s vision and work in the 1970s can inform 21st Century multimedia performance, dance, and contemporary art. Following the panel, Satellite presents the New York premiere of Central Park, Earlier In Time, a dance work with projection incorporating the drawings of Gordon Matta-Clark. This work is in development for stage presentation.

In his short but prolific career, Gordon Matta-Clark centered collaboration at the core of his artistic practice. Ensconced in the downtown art scene of the 1970s, he not only incorporated film, dance, performance and food into his own work but also regularly participated in other artists’ projects such as performing in Joan Jonas’s film Song Delay, designing set ideas for Mabou Mines, or dancing with the Trisha Brown Dance Company.

Collaboration being central to Gordon Matta-Clark’s legacy, the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark works with contemporary artists in the generation of new pieces in dialogue with his ideas. Satellite Collective is inspired by similar collaborative methods brought forward into a digital age. Although the art economy has radically changed since the 70s and 80s, the city remains a powerful source of raw material for commentary and transformation. How can engaging in a dialogue with an artist of the past inspire new work that addresses our present moment?

The evening will include a screening of a Gordon Matta-Clark short film with introduction by Co-Director of his Estate, Jessamyn Fiore and a feature performance of live ballet and projection. Using Gordon Matta-Clark’s drawings as source material, Satellite artist Kevin Draper has translated them into three-dimensional space bringing Matta-Clark’s images into a futuristic New York.

Panelists include: Jessamyn Fiore, Co-Director, Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark; Artists of SITE:LAB, and Kevin Draper and Lora Robertson, Satellite Collective.

  • Daniel Donato Brings the Sunshine During A Sold Out Snowstorm Show at Bowery Ballroom

Tuesday, February 13, was a sleet-streaked Tuesday, as the Big Apple got its first snowfall in two years, but within a few notes of Daniel Donato’s standout playing, New York City’s iconic Bowery Ballroom melted away into sun-drenched paradise as the sold out crowd packed in.

23 shows deep into his 2024 winter/spring tour, Donato is a regular visitor to New York State recently selling out Brooklyn Bowl just late last year, so it is a treat getting to see him in such an intimate venue. It’s clear Donato and his band are destined for greater things. Whether he’s strumming out phaser-soaked melodies or channeling his southern drawl through machine gun-like rapid-fire guitar riffs, Donato’s virtuosity, honed through hard practice, is simply breathtaking. His guitar becomes an extension of his soul, delivering lyrics like “..the country boy lived within the sky blue telecaster” with a palpable authenticity.

Donato’s synergy with his road warrior bandmates creates a groove that feels like a well-worn freight train. Will McGee on electric and standup bass, Nathan “Sugar” Aronowitz on keys, organ and guitar, and Will Clark on drums. Donato and his crew exude an aura of rock and roll royalty, with a crew whose uniform of black cowboy hats and boots evokes the “Memphis Mafia.”

From the onset, drummer Will Clark’s metronomic beat set the stage for a musical journey that refused to relent. Clark’s percussive prowess seamlessly navigated through various styles and tempos, providing the perfect foundation for Donato’s cosmic country odyssey. A standout of the night was Aronowitz’s multi-instrumental talents, stepping up from the keys to deliver exceptional guitar work during “Dancin In The Desert” and organ playing that is seemingly otherworldly.

The crowd’s unofficial uniform of tie dyes, western wear, and psychedelia underscores Donatos ability to tap into a psychedelic Americana renaissance. While his style may draw comparisons to jam aficionados, Donato’s signature sound remains firmly rooted, with an unwavering dedication to his craft shines through. From humble beginnings being introduced to Grateful Dead through a high school history teacher to honing his chops with over 400 sets with Nashville’s famous Don Kelly Band, Donatos’ rise in the music industry has been the product of his own dedication, and the hard work of those around him.

    daniel donato bowery

As Donato and his team bid farewell, the audience barely budged, eagerly anticipating an encore. Returning to the stage, they delivered a jumping cover of the Dead’s “Quinn The Eskimo,” echoing sentiments of endless possibilities and boundless horizons. With his new album, Reflector, now out, Donato has proved himself not just as a musician but as a captivating live performer. Fans can look forward to experiencing Donato in NYC again this summer when he joins moe. to play Pier 17.

  • Pearl Jam Announce New Album ‘Dark Matter’ and Tour with Two Dates at MSG

Pearl Jam has announced the release of the 12th studio album Dark Matter, coming on April 19, 2024, and the launch of a 35-date worldwide tour this May. The band will go to Madison Square Garden on September 3 and September 4, 2024.

    Pearl Jam.
Dark Matter Album Artwork: light painting art by Alexandr Gnezdilov

Pearl Jam is an alternative rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990. The band’s lineup consists of bassist Jeff Ament, rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard, lead guitarist Mike McCready, lead singer/guitarist Eddie Vedder, and drummer Matt Cameron. With thirty-plus years of live performances, twelve studio albums, and hundreds of official live concert bootleg releases later, Pearl Jam continues to be critically acclaimed and commercially successful. The band has sold over 85 million albums worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

Since the earliest days, they have used their platform to elevate people and causes that often go unnoticed. Much of the band’s philanthropic work is accomplished through its Vitalogy Foundation which to date has raised more than $50 million for organizations supporting issues such as abortion access, climate change, homelessness, and drawing attention to the fight against diseases such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis and epidermolysis bullosa (EB). In addition to the money Vitalogy donates, the band also donates signed instruments, posters, and merchandise to organizations to use for their fundraising purposes.

In 2023, the band went to La Studios in Malibu where they simply plugged in and played with producer Andrew Watt. The musicians faced one another in the same space and communicated sonically at the highest level, producing Dark Matter in just three weeks. As a result, the album channels the shared spirit of a group of lifelong creative confidants and brothers in one room playing as if their very lives depended on it.

I’m getting chills, because I have good memories. We’re still looking for ways to communicate. We’re at this time in our lives when you could do it or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful and we hopefully think is our best work. No hyperbole, I think this is our best work.

    Eddie Vedder.

The band is celebrating indie record stores with the release of a special edition of Dark Matter on April 20; only at participating stores as part of Record Store Day. Get more information and find stores here.

Special guests Deep Sea Diver (North America Leg 1), Glen Hansard (North America Leg 2), The Murder Capital (UK/EU), Richard Ashcroft (Dublin and London), and Pixies (Australia and New Zealand) will serve as support for these dates.

Tickets will be available two ways: a Ten Club members-only presale will be held through Ticketmaster Request for eligible members. Only paid Ten Club members active as of Monday, February 12 are eligible to participate in this presale. More info here. Fans can register for a chance to participate in the Dark Matter World Tour 2024 registration sale by Sunday, February 18 at 11:59 PM local time for Europe, UK, Australia, and New Zealand shows and by Sunday, February 18 at 11:59 pm PT for North America shows. • Carnegie Hall Celebrates Steve and Eydie – One of Show Business’ Greatest Couples

Carnegie Hall will celebrate an iconic show business duo, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé, this Valentine’s Day. The Hall will host a private reception on Wednesday, February 14 in their Susan W. Rose Archives as The Lawrence Family Foundation honors Steve & Eydie with a generous endowment contribution to the Carnegie Hall Education Endowment Fund.

Carnegie Hall Celebrates Steve and Eydie

Steve and Eydie were 1950s hits, where they performed for decades on various shows beginning with Tonight Starring Steve Allen. The duo would perform musically in the big band, swing, and doo-wop styles. Together, the duo became iconic, and their impact lasts to this day. The duo left an indelible impression on popular music.

The celebration will showcase an orchestra conducted by the couple’s son David Lawrence. Alongside David will be Tony Award-winner Debbie Gravitte. Together, they will honor Steve and Eydie by playing and performing their classic hits from back in the day.

“As native New Yorkers, we know that Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gormé’s Carnegie Hall concerts in the 1980s represented a special musical homecoming for both of them, even after they had experienced so many great successes across the music world. Fans absolutely loved their Carnegie Hall performances, now considered a cherished part of the Hall’s history. We’re very grateful to the Lawrence family for honoring their legacy in this meaningful way, providing generous support that will help young musicians as they prepare to take to Carnegie Hall’s stage and beyond.”

Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director

  • In Focus: Tinashe Shines at Terminal 5

New York City’s Terminal 5 was packed on Friday, February 9 as R&B star Tinashe played to a sold-out crowd. The singer-songwriter’s current tour showcases her sixth studio album, BB/Ang3l, which was released in September, 2023.

The energy in the 3,000-capacity venue was electric as Tinashe’s stylish fans packed in, and the crowd eagerly shouted along with a projected digital countdown in the minutes before she took the stage.

Tinashe emerged on top of a towering platform washed in blue light to sing her first song, “Treason.” She disappeared momentarily before reappearing at center stage, flanked by a group of athletic backup dancers, and transitioning into her upbeat track “X.”

The choreography for Tinashe’s BB/Ang3l tour is sharp and energetic, and looked truly effortless on the artist, who has been training in dance since the age of four. The crowd went wild with nearly every move Tinashe hit, and she worked the stage with a cool, laser-sharp focus.

The BB/Ang3l tour will continue through mid April, culminating in Tinashe’s set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Tinashe Terminal 5 Setlist: Treason, X, None of My Business, Talk to Me Nice, Life’s Too Short, Throw a Fit, HMU For a Good Time, Die a Little Bit, Stormy Weather, Bouncin, Link Up, Cash Race, Sunburn, Cold Sweat, The Worst in Me, Unconditional, Story of Us, 2 On, Rascal (Superstar), Gold Teeth, Uh Huh, Ghetto Boy, SHY GUY, Tightrope, Gravity/Superlove, Needs/All Hands on Deck

  • Hearing Aide: Jed Luckless “Multiply”

New York City based musician Jed Luckless recently released his brand new album, Multiply on December 29, 2023.

This marks Jed’s third solo record; his first solo studio release in over 8 years. His most recent, Roll Over debuted in the fall of 2015. Multiply features 9 songs all written and performed by Luckless. A musical savant, Luckless can be heard on lead vocals, background vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards and drums.

Multiply blends familiar elements of folk and rock with traditional country and blues to create a fresh new sound. Luckless’s classical guitar style introduction on “Luna”, or his country blues playing on “Ungratefully Dead” are just two examples of the sonic exploration that is Multiply; seamlessly weaving through different styles, moods and time signatures.

Luckless is a very descriptive songwriter and lyricist, thoughtfully painting the scenes and emotions his songs portray like an empty canvas. This, paired with his lighthearted, playful-like story telling approach, provides him the foundation to tackle some heavy thematic concepts. Themes of the inevitability of time, inward self reflection and the overcoming of personal obstacles just begin to scratch the surface. “Live for today” is the message repeated by Luckless at the end of “Own”, a beautifully crafted ballad given an additional layer of depth and flavor by Jed’s percussion work.

Luckless joins artists like Prince and Paul McCartney, who are known for recording all the tracks on some of their past records. From the harmonized vocals on “Time & Tide”, to the distorted guitar solos on “Latest Craze” and the title track “Multiply”,  to the featured organ on “Latest Craze”, Luckless’s multi-instrumental talent and musical expertise is on full display throughout.

Jed’s live band, The Jed Luckless Band (JBL), perform his original work, including his latest release, Multiply. Jed can also be seen performing live with acts Clueless Wallob and Star ‘69, a Phish and Grateful Dead tribute respectively. You can catch Jed Luckless live at Odeen’s at Spins in Carmel, NY on Wednesday, February 28th starting at 7:00pm.

You can also directly support Jed at his website where Multiply is available now for just $10! • Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue to play Pier 17 Rooftop with Big Boi in June

The high octane of Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will take center stage this summer, for a run that begins in June, with a stop at The Rooftop at Pier 17 along the way. Joining Trombone Shorty this summer is the legendary Big Boi from Outkast.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will stop at The Rooftop at Pier 17

Trombone Shorty recently teamed up with his childhood friend Sammy Cyrus for a special project named Saint Brass. Ahead of Mardi Gras festivities, the duo has dropped “Mardi Gras Morning,” an irresistibly joyful track that captures the vibrant spirit of New Orleans.

On February 16, just three days after Mardi Gras, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will embark on the first-ever Shorty Gras tour, bringing their high-energy New Orleans party to the East Coast for a special 3-week run of performances. They’ll be joined by another New Orleans staple, The Soul Rebels. Shorty Gras has become a beloved New Orleans tradition since its inaugural year in 2020, a featured event as part of the Krewe de Freret Parade in the lead-up to Mardi Gras (the Krewe de Freret Parade is scheduled for February 3, 2024).

Trombone Shorty leads the parade on his own signature float, and concludes with the Shorty Gras ball at Mardi Gras World, featuring a who’s who of musical guests. Previous performers include Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, Flo Rida, Big Freedia, Tank and the Bangas, Rebirth Brass Band. This year, Shorty will bring this distinctly New Orleans Mardi Gras party on the road for the first time.

It will be another busy year for the New Orleans ambassador and road warrior. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue just announced that their beloved Treme Threauxdown concert will return for its eighth year, taking place at New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre on Saturday, April 27 during the first weekend of the Jazz and Heritage Festival. The list of guest stars will be revealed soon, but past shows have seen everyone from Jon Batiste, Mavis Staples, Allen Toussaint, and Dr. John to Eric Church, Usher, Joan Jett, and Gary Clark, Jr., and have also included surprise appearances by artists from Nick Jonas to Dierks Bentley to Steve Miller to Wyclef Jean.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue just returned from a five-day cultural exchange trip to Cuba, which took place from January 11-15. It marked the third edition of the “Getting Funky in Havana” festival, celebrating the New Orleans – Cuba connection through music. The highlight was a mega concert on January 13 at Club 500, where Trombone Shorty, Orleans Avenue, and Cuban legends Los Van Van and Wampi drew a record-breaking crowd of over 15,000 people, the largest in Cuba in the last four years.

Additionally, Trombone Shorty cohosted the largest U.S-Cuba jam session at Havana’s Fabrica de Arte Cubano, featuring over 30 artists from both countries. A centerpiece of the event was the collaboration with Guillermo Tomas Music Conservatory, with Trombone Shorty’s Foundation donating instruments to the school through a partnership with Horns to Havana.
