  • Justin Timberlake is “Selfish” and “Sanctified” SNL with host Dakota Johnson

For the second episode of Saturday Night Live in 2024, Studio 8H welcomed back Madame Web actress Dakota Johnson, along with musical guest and SNL Five-Timer Club member, Justin Timberlake.

    Justin Timberlake SNL

The opening sketch this evening through was a bit more of a cold and dry open, making light of the NFL season coming to an end this weekend (short of the Super Bowl), and draining the last comedic bits of Taylor Swift’s influence, out of the football and SNL seasons.

During Johnson’s monologue where she reminisced about her last stint as host, and brought up The Social Network co-star Justin Timberlake, who showed up to casually remind Johnson that he’s available for sketches, given his Five-Timer Club status.

During the “Waiters” sketch, Sarah Sherman displayed equal parts Gilda Radner and Kristin Wiig with her unique quirk worked in.

“The Barry Gibb Talkshow” returned for the first time since 2013, taking a look at the 2024 election, with Jimmy Fallon making a special appearance as Barry Gibb and Timberlake as Robin Gibb. Bringing this back was a no-brainer with Timberlake on the show this week, even if Fallon has gotten a little tiring as of late.

“Home Videos” would be the highlight of the episode, with Andrew Dismukes as a son who learns his parents were on a Maury Povich-style talk show, where his father (Mikey Day) learned he was the father.

An always a welcome short from Please Don’t Destroy kept their hot streak going, even if Dakota Johnson did knock the trio down a peg, referring to Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy as ‘The Lonelier Island’ in a roast-filled segment.

Timberlake performed “Sanctified” for his first song, the second single from his upcoming sixth solo album, Everything I Thought It Was, due out on March 15. JT was joined by Houston rapper Tobe Nwigwe for the rock/rap/R&B number, walking in from stage left, flanked by dancers clad in flowing white dresses, an appearance that was teased last week on Nwigwe’s Instagram.

Timberlake’s second song was the first single from Everything I Thought It Was, “Selfish,” the same title as a 2011 release from his ex, Britney Spears. Surrounded by white neon lines along cascading walls, stripped down with just a drummer and keyboardist, Timberlake sang softly in contrast to “Sanctified,” a more passionate and smooth pop hit in “Selfish.”

SNL returns on Saturday, February 3 with host Ayo Edebiri and musical guest Jennifer Lopez.

  • Oscars 2024 Music Nominees Includes Robbie Robertson, Billie Eilish, and More

The 2024 Oscar nominations were just announced, featuring Robbie Robertson receiving a posthumous nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon, Billie Eilish for Barbie, and more.

    oscars

The 2024 Oscars will occur on Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. With an eclectic mix of musicians, the music nominees are bold and diverse, creating songs for some great films last year.

In the Best Original Score category, Robbie Robertson earned a posthumous Oscar nomination for his score for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Robertson, composer, songwriter, and musician known for the influential group the Band, died Aug. 9 at age 80. He was a longtime collaborator with Scorsese, starting with 1978’s The Last Waltz. The iconic director acknowledged Robertson in a statement about the Oscar nom, writing ” I only wish that Robbie Robertson had lived to see his work recognized—our many years of friendship and Robbie’s growing consciousness of his own Native heritage played a crucial role in my desire to get this film onscreen.”

Other nominees in that category include Flushing native and infamous composer John Williams for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Williams has received almost 80 GRAMMY nominations for his work in iconic films, and 54 Oscar nominations, the most of any living person. Ludwig Göransson’s emotionally charged compositions for Oppenheimer earned a rightful nomination, and English musician Jerskin Fendrix received his first nom for Poor Things.

In the Best Original Song category, Diane Warren earned her seventh consecutive Oscar nom for “The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot, her 15th overall. Jon Batiste, who won an Oscar three years ago for collaborating on the Soul score with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, got his first best original song nod for “It Never Went Away” from American Symphony, a documentary about a year in his life.

Killers of the Moon received another Oscar nomination with “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” by Scott George. Barbie spawned two best song nominees, the first film since La La Land seven years ago. “I’m Just Ken” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt and “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, which also received several GRAMMY noms, made it on the ballot.

  • Madonna in Trouble, Fans Sue over Late Start at Brooklyn “Celebration Tour” Dates

Pop icon Madonna has run into some trouble as two fans who attended the December 13 date of her Brooklyn “Celebration Tour,” have decided to sue the musician for starting her show over two hours late, causing it to end at around 1 a.m.

Madonna performing during “The Celebration Tour” at Barclays Center on December 14, 2023, photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage for Live Nation/Getty Images.

As reported in the BBC, the case, brought by Michael Fellows and Jonathan Hadden, states that “many ticketholders who attended concerts on a weeknight had to get up early to go to work and/or take care of their family responsibilities the next day.” Due to the start time changing from the previously scheduled 8:30 p.m. to a near 10:30, making the pair leave the show at around 1 a.m. they were “left stranded in the middle of the night” and “confronted with limited public transportation, limited ride-sharing, and/or increased public and private transportation costs.”

The defendants only attended the December 13 concert, but the suit claims that the December 14 and 16 concerts also had a delayed start time. Fellows and Hadden are accusing Madonna, Barclays Center, and tour promoter Live Nation of “unconscionable, unfair, and/or deceptive trade practices” for the delayed start time, citing it as an exercise of false advertising. Had they known this would have occurred, they said they would have not purchased tickets.

The court papers also say Madonna “has a long history of arriving and starting her concerts late, sometimes several hours late.” In 2019, during her “Madame X” theater tour, Madonna was similarly sued for starting her show at 10:30 p.m. and was also called out at her 2016 Rebel Heart Tour for being late.

Madonna’s “Celebration Tour” was a greatest hits show including more than 40 songs from her career. The Barclays Center shows were originally supposed to happen in July 2023 but were rescheduled following her hospitalization in June for a serious bacterial infection. The tour continues until its last stop in Mexico in April.

  • Seth Glier To Perform at The Eighth Step in Schenectady

Referred as a singer with an exquisite tenor, echoing Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel in the piano pop, Seth Glier will perform at the Eighth Step in Schenectady on February 10. This will be the singer’s return to the Capital Region after appearing in October alongside folk singer Tom Rush.

Growing up in Massachusetts, Glier grew up singing a lot of traditional shape note choir music from Appalachia and mountain music from the countries of Bulgaria and Georgia. The singer also grew up in a singing camp called Village Harmony, but now as an artist and activist Glier’s love and understanding of nature, his care for social justice and his music are synchronous. The singer also dedicated his latest album Rise to supporting Trout Unlimited, a national organization dedicated to conserving, protecting, and restoring America’s coldwater fisheries and their watershed.

The singer’s commitment to using songwriting as a tool for positive change has prompted him to work with the students in Parkland, FL for the ‘Parkland Project’. The project aims to connect Parkland neighborhoods to five schools, three County Parks, and Pacific Lutheran University. It also provides a safe route for people of all ages and abilities to get around in the areas that currently have few sidewalks and bike lanes.

Doors will open at 7 pm on February 10 and tickets can be purchased here and through Proctors Box Office (518) 346-6204.

  • Enrose Releases “Therapy”- A Song About Self Awareness

Talented singer-songwriter and saxophonist, Gabi Rose, has treated us to “Therapy,” part of her project Enrose.

    Enrose-“Therapy”

This catchy track effortlessly blends Indie Pop with Alt-Rock. What makes this song truly special? Gabi’s signature touch, a saxophone solo- this time as a lead hook, staying true to her classic style we know and love.

“Therapy” blends saxophone-infused goodness to encourage listeners to follow their dreams. Gabi and her song aim to encourage self-expression, even in the face of fear. Drawing inspiration from artists like Paramore, Alanis Morissette, and Olivia Rodrigo, Enrose’s music melds contemporary appeal with nostalgic elements and expressive New York musical artistry. “Therapy” was made dedicated to those who grasp life’s brevity and recognize that life is complicated but self-reflection is a large part of figuring it out.

Gabi Rose sings, “That’s it, I’m getting therapy / Cuz I am seeing things / Got No One Else to Blame / The Wheels are Turning the Wrong Way ,” setting the stage for the chorus: “Knot in my Soul / Out of Control / I’ve Done All That I Can Do For Me / I’m Getting Therapy”.

While therapy is more of a widely discussed topic nowadays, it still can be very challenging to take the leap. This vulnerable, yet uplifting hit describes to listeners the willingness to accept help in therapy, after making an effort to figure things out on your own.

Gabi has broken barriers with her viral performances and now with her own project, Enrose. Through Enrose, she plans to carve out her unique niche, challenge societal conventions, and empower women in the music scene.

Now streaming on all platforms, have a listen to “Therapy” from Enrose.
