  • Josh Lumsden Releases Hypnotic Single “Serotonin”

Pop artist Josh Lumsden has released a soothing new single “Look at What I Found” that explores euphoric experiences in romance.

Independent DIY pop artist and acclaimed NYC-based producer Josh Lumsden new single marks as the second single of  their sophomore EP, VYYPER slated for a 2024 release. The hypnotic and dragonfly-infested self-produced single “Serotonin” features a dance-funk sound blended well with powerhouse belts. When describing the song, the artist shared how the single “is about feeling the euphoric high experienced when entering a new romantic situation.”

Mexican-American Josh Lumsden is known for being the sole producer of their entire discography and director and editor of their music videos. Known for their musical collaborations with LGBTQIA+ Icons Yvie Oddly and Brendan Maclean, the classically trained musician and self-taught producer has been praised by PopBuzz for “constructing supernatural earworms”, with World Of Wonder asserting that “everything you hear comes straight from Josh”.

The single is also accompanied by a self-directed music video and features a completely different vibe. The video shows him completely depicting himself and a hybrid-ethereal entity in their  image, showcasing an emotional entrapment. Dragonflies consistently reappear in different parts of the video, serving as a recurring visual motif that ties the scenes together. As a producer of the track, Lumsden shared how they were very inspired by downcast-pop/funk & unconventional chords, “I really wanted to pair that with vocals that kind of touch all the different ranges of my voice. I tried to mix chest voice, falsetto, and belting all in one track.”

With the single release and a new EP date announcement, Lumsden also shared that there will be a few more singles off the EP, which fans can expect to be released this year. Their new self-produced single “Serotonin” is available to stream everywhere, and for more information about the artist, fans can visit here.

  • In Focus: Ricky Montgomery’s Return to NYC

Ricky Montgomery‘s electrifying performance at Terminal 5 in Manhattan on February 24th was a testament to his magnetic stage presence and undeniable talent. Returning to New York after his stint accompanying Cavetown on the “Bittersweet Daze” Tour, Ricky shared intimate moments with his adoring fans, weaving together a setlist of old favorites and new tracks from his latest album, Rick.

As the crowd erupted in anticipation, Ricky took the stage with a burst of energy, kicking off the night with his signature anthem “Line Without a Hook.” The surprise appearance of mxmtoon for the alternate version of the song elevated the performance to new heights, with both artists radiating infectious energy as they interacted with fans at the barricade.

Throughout the evening, Ricky’s charm and wit shone through, as he shared anecdotes about his time living in New York and reminisced about his early days as a musician. Songs like “Last Night” and “Ethan’s Song” took on new meaning as Ricky poured his heart out on stage, drawing fans closer with each heartfelt lyric.

The atmosphere crackled with excitement during the debut of “Unknown Phantom,” with Ricky playfully urging the crowd to “go crazy” at the behest of his label. Moments of pure euphoria ensued as fans echoed Ricky’s every word, shouting declarations of love and support into the air.

During the encore, Ricky’s energy remained undiminished as he returned to the stage with opener Noah Floersch for a rousing rendition of “This December,” igniting the crowd with an electrifying finale. From the soul-stirring melodies of “My Heart Is Buried in Venice” to the anthemic chorus of “Don’t Say That,” Ricky Montgomery’s performance was a masterclass in emotion and authenticity, leaving an indelible impression on all who were lucky enough to witness it.

Setlist: Line Without a Hook (featuring mxmtoon), In Your Pocket, Cabo, One Way Mirror, Talk to You, Black Fins, I Don’t Love You Anymore, Type A, Last Night, Truth or Dare, Unknown Phantom (Unreleased), Snow, Ethan’s Song, My Heart Is Buried in Venice (Acoustic), Boy Toy, It’s Ok to Cry, Don’t Say That, Out Like a Light

Encore: Sometimes I Need to Be Alone, This December, Mr Loverman

  • Journey Teleports Through 50 Years in Rochester

Reliving the glory years, fans in Rochester were treated to a night of classics as Journey blew the roof off the Blue Cross Arena, the eighth stop on the Freedom Tour. The February 22 show marked Journey’s seventh visit to the city, dating back to 1978.

Playing for little more 90 minutes, frontman Arnel Pineda jumped around the stage enough to make his Fitbit question his activity. While not original to the band, Pineda has been doing his best Steve Perry impression for nearly 17 years, and despite nailing a nerve wrecking interview, he has solidified his role as lead vocalist. The vocal range, the sounds and pitch, all of it are exactly what Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain were hoping for as they sought out Perry’s replacement.

Opening the show for Pineda and company was Toto. Not quite as tenured as Journey, Toto has just over 40 years of songs and 14 studio albums, and they chose a nice nine-song set for the Rochester crowd. As the lone original Toto member, Steve Lukather came out donning a floor length cloak and rocked out “Girl Good” Bye” and “Hold the Line.” Of course, the set ended with “Rosanna” and “Africa,” two songs that are synonymous with Toto and the 80s.

Fans were out of their seats as Lukather led the charge during their set, belting out a little “Hakuna Matata” and a cover of the Beatles “With a Little Help From My Friends.” A little mellow, a little sappy, and a lot of high energy rock prepped the crowd for what they were about to endure.

Hitting the stage shortly before 9, Cain and Pineda led Journey out before the Rochester crowd and opened up with “Only The Young,” a song about youth and the freedoms they encounter growing up. One of Journey’s best songs, it wasn’t originally released by them. Intended for the Frontiers album, it was a late cut and sold to Scandal. A few years later, it was on Vison Quest soundtrack and ultimately hit Number 9 on the charts and released as single by Journey.

Progressing through the set, Pineda did not slow down. Dancing around withe mic stand, flipping the mic, hopping on and off the speakers, he flawlessly delivered note after note pointing out to random area of the crowd. “Stone in Love” and “Don’t Stop Believin’” get the crowd up and dancing like they were 17 again, before all the back and knee problems took over.

About halfway through the set, Deen Castronovo delivers a powerful rendition of “Mother-Father.” Perched behind his drum set, Castronovo takes this song and makes it his own, delivering what I would consider the hit of the night. Powerful, serene, and thought-provoking performance from the former Bad English drummer.

Leading into “Open Arms,” Cain let loose on the piano as the band waited in the wings, pounding the keys as smooth and as delectate as possible. The piano sounds filled the arena with aging fans who once held lit lighters in the air, are now turning on their phones flashlights. The iconic Journey ballad commences as Pineda encourages the crowd to sing along.

Donning a hockey jersey from the hometown Rochester Americans, Cain continued the next song with some back story. In 1983, the band was looking to write a song that pays homage to loved ones at home with the band tours and is apart. Perry and crew decided to take it one step further and dedicate to the men and women of the Armed Forces who were also apart from loved ones. From this, we were given “Faithfully.” As the song played, the backscreen displayed band members with military personal, family members and fans alike. This was a dedication to anyone who is apart from their loved ones. You could quietly hear the tears being shed from those around me as the song began.

For a little more than 90 minutes, fans were taken back to a simpler time. Memories were brought back of proms, weddings, friends, and other loved ones. Fans young and old were celebrating 50 years of hits, B-sides, and deep cuts. 50 years of iconic sounds have been copied and covered but there’s nothing like originals.

Journey continues their Freedom tour through April, before hitting the road with Def Lepard.

Toto set list: Girl Goodbye/Hold the Line/99/Dying on My Feet/ I’ll Be Over You/Home of the Brave/ With a Little Help From My Friends (The Beatles cover)/Rosanna/ Africa

Journey set list: Only the Young/guitar solo/Stone in Love,/Don’t Stop Believin’/Lights/ Send Her My Love/Who’s Crying Now/Escape,/Mother-Father/Let it Rain/Lovin’, Touchin, Squeezin/piano solo/Open Arms/Faithfully/Girl Can’t Help It (Jason Derlatka)/guitar solo/Wheel in The Sky/Separate Ways/Be Good to Yourself/Any Way You Want It

South Korean pop band Oneus first released their debut EP Light Us in 2019 with “Valkyrie” serving as its lead single. The song was received with positive reviews and quickly gained attention in the international markets by charting in top ten of several countries’ iTunes charts, including at number one in the US and Australia. Oneus members, Ravn, Seoho, Leedo, Keonhee, Hwanwoong and Xion came up with their band name which has two meanings. The band is seemingly eager to get back in front of their fans and follow up from their Blood Moon tour in 2022.

In addition to the success of other K-pop acts like Blackpink and BTS, Korean dramas like “Squid Game” have also contributed to the appeal of Korean pop and culture in the US. • Meet Me @ The Altar – Irving Plaza Edition

Meet Me @ The Altar, the vibrant and genre-defying trio, is redefining the punk and pop-punk scene with their electrifying energy and empowering anthems. With lead vocalist Edith Victoria, guitarist Tea Campbell, and drummer Ada Juarez, the band’s dynamic sound reflects their diverse influences and shared passion for breaking barriers in the music industry. Hailing from different corners of the U.S., MMATA found their common ground, and swiftly became a force to be reckoned within the world of punk.

    MMATA

MMATA’s “Say it To My Face Tour” stop at Irving Plaza on January 25 was an exhilarating celebration of punk, diversity, and unapologetic self-expression. The night kicked off with stellar performances by Elliot Lee, John Hardie, and Honey Revenge, setting the stage for a high-octane headlining act.

    MMATA

As MMATA took the stage, the atmosphere crackled with excitement. A fan in the front row held a sign that declared “Ada is my everything,” a testament to the profound connection the band fosters with their supporters. The show became a participatory experience when Edith let the crowd choose between two songs, playfully warning them about the sad backstory of “A Few Tomorrows” before launching into it, resulting in playful banter between the band and their adoring audience.

    MMATA

Edith, Tea, and Ada’s banter with the crowd showcased not only their musical prowess but also their genuine connection with fans. They acknowledged a dedicated fan who had attended 10 shows with applause, reinforcing the reciprocal love between the band and their followers. The concert marked a significant milestone for MMATA, as they headlined at Irving Plaza for the first time, reflecting on their journey from opening for MUNA in 2022 to sharing the stage at Madison Square Garden with 5 Seconds of Summer.

    MMATA

Inflatable beach balls bounced through the crowd, adding to the playful atmosphere, while Edith’s confusion about the continued existence of BeReal revealed a charming, down-to-earth side. The concert took unexpected turns, such as Tea’s witty remarks during the intro to “Hit’s Like a Girl,” celebrating love and adding a personal touch to the night.

    MMATA

A standout segment dubbed “Songs We Wish We Wrote” featured spirited covers, including “Since You’ve Been Gone” and “Burnin’ Up,” showcasing the band’s versatility and sense of humor. The fan project during “Garden,” where paper flowers bloomed in the crowd, was a visually stunning moment, and Edith’s acceptance of a flower from a fan emphasized the symbiotic relationship between the band and their admirers.

    MMATA

Meet Me @ The Altar used their platform for more than music, incorporating activism into the show with the presence of Headcount volunteers promoting voter registration. Crowdsurfing added a final touch of chaos to the night, encapsulating the raw, unfiltered spirit of punk.

In summary, Meet Me @ The Altar’s concert at Irving Plaza wasn’t just a show; it was a riotous celebration of individuality, shared experiences, and the unifying power of music. The trio’s ability to seamlessly blend punk, pop-punk, and heartfelt lyrics created an atmosphere that resonated with the diverse audience, making it a night to remember.

Setlist: Same Language, Now or Never, Try, A Few Tomorrows (Crowd voted for this over May the Odds Be Ever In Your Favor), Hit Like a Girl, It’s Over for Me, Since U Been Gone (Partial Kelly Clarkson cover), Take Me Away (Partial Christina Vidal cover), Burnin’ Up (Partial Jonas Brothers cover), T.M.I, Garden, Feel a Thing, Kool, Say It (to My Face)

  • The Massive Memoir From a Glorious Star, “My Name Is Barbra”

“You knew instantly that she was an original,” Alan Bergman. For those who have waited a lifetime for this memoir, it was worth it. For all who were uncertain it would ever happen, arriving just before holidays 2023, finally in her own words, Barbra Streisand sets the record straight on her private and public life in My Name is Barbra.

The EGOT winner chronicles her 60 year career with honesty, poignancy, humor and questioning. Her achievements have made her legendary, which includes 46 GRAMMY nominations.

    barbra streisand

In addition to her fabulous music career, Barbra Streisand was also the first woman to write, produce, direct and star in a major motion picture. She is also the only recording artist in history earning number one albums over six decades.

New York is where it began, growing up in Brooklyn, on to Catskills summer camp which she hated, Summer Stock at Malden Bridge Playhouse at 15, the Cecilwood Theatre in Fishkill, then her beginnings in New York Nightclubs. Later on with success, Hello Dolly! would film scenes in West Point and Garrison, then scenes from The Way We Were were shot in Schenectady

Singing as a start, was a way to earn a living. Early on, success came from the musical and film versions of Funny Girl.

From her early career and throughout it, Barbra Streisand’s talents were often overshadowed by society’s labels pertaining to beauty and unfair comments directed towards her. She serenely handled this and carried on with creativity, not letting it defeat her. Thankfully by the time she reached twenty, some would refer to her looks as “pharaonic” “Nefertiti” and “Babylonian Queen” appreciating the beauty that she so obviously had in addition to her immense talent and drive.

    barbra streisand
The cover of My Name is Barbra

As she mentions straightaway beginning the memoir, the negativity pertaining to her appearance was disheartening. As she also points out, it would stick with her throughout her career.

She had been asked to write her memoir for so long, finally deciding it was time to set things straight and correct any misconceptions lingering about her.

Her memoir is an inspiration to anyone that doubts following their dreams, because success “actually makes you more of who you really are” she states.

Like with so many talented and creative people, perhaps Barbra Streisand’s journey into music and theater stemmed from early dissatisfaction with everyday life being unfulfilling. At 14, journeying into Manhattan seeing marquees everywhere showed her seemingly “endless possibilities.”

Movies showed her a world “so much more vivid and alive than anything I was experiencing.” Barbra recalls the excitement of her first play Teahouse of the August Moon at Malden Bridge Playhouse where she performed with her best friend. She refers to that time as a “glorious summer.”

A local newspaper gave her performances great reviews, bolstering her confidence. Not unlike Ella Fitzgerald, she declared on the playground that one day she would be famous.

It was in the Catskills at 13, that her mother was told about a studio where you could make your own record; Barbra and her mother would then go to Nola Studios in December 1955 to do that. She recalls how inspirational that experience was for her. One of the memoir’s themes is that of honesty.

Barbra Streisand gives us a compelling glimpse into the creative process of her movies and albums, her journey from struggle to star, along with personal anecdotes on her friendships and romances. Life includes loss, and loss is another of the memoir’s themes with what comes across as the pain of losing her father while she was so young and some of her close friends and colleagues.

When once asked: “How do you hold a note so long?” “Because I wanted to” was her response.

Barbra Streisand has received the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Kennedy Center Honor, the National Medal of Arts, France’s Légion d’Honneur, and America’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She founded The Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai, raising awareness for more research into women’s heart disease.

The Streisand Foundation, which she established in 1986, has supported national organizations working on preservation of the environment, voter education, the protection of civil liberties and civil rights, women’s issues, and nuclear disarmament. In 2021 she launched the Barbra Streisand Institute at UCLA, dedicated to finding solutions to the most vital social issues.
