Wonderland Forest is situated roughly 25 minutes south of Syracuse in the rolling hills of Lafayette, NY. Plot your trip with the map below.

This will be the second Biscoland at Wonderland, the first being held this past October. The return to a summer music festival hosted by Disco Biscuits brings back Camp Bisco memories, albeit much smaller, and as bassist and DJ Marc Brownstein put it in October, “We really hope you will consider a spontaneous last minute trip to support the thing that you always wanted, a return to the festival of the old days.”

    The Wonderland Forest Grounds

Bisconauts can expect five sets of Disco Biscuits, including one set on Thursday night of Tractorbeam. Playing each day prior to the hosts are Lettuce, Nora en Pure, Kitchen Dwellers, Lespecial, Break Science, Maniac Focus, Saxsquatch, Ben Silver, DJ Minx, Jimkata, Out of the Beardspace, RAQ, Squeaky Feet, The Breakfast, Space Bacon, Mark Farina, Cofresi, Dizgo, Cloudchord, Souleye and Horizon Wireless.

  • Papadosio Brings Summer Sequence to Wonderland Forest

Papadosio brought their Summer Sequence Festival to Wonderland Forest on June 21 and 22 in Lafayette, New York. Summer Sequence has been around in different variations since 2017. This summer they decided to give the new venue in the Finger Lakes a try, moving the festival from their home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina.

Wonderland Forest, still in it’s nascent phase, was a great low-key location for a music festival, as it was intimate and hassle free. Everything was centrally located with two campgrounds on either side of the venue, and besides a trek up the hill for the late-night stage, you were never a far walk from anything. The main stage, nestled in the forest was intimate, and the trees offered a great spot for people to set up their hammocks and set up their own home bases away from their camp site. I did not venture into the other campground area, so I’m not sure if they had any other food options out that way, but the main stage did have a small menu for food. They cooked it made-to-order and they had a pretty damn good wood-fired pizza as an option. If you are camping there for a festival in the future it would probably be smart to not depend on those options for the whole weekend though. The Finger Lakes offers a ton of opportunities to take in some nature in the afternoon, both onsite and offsite, exiting and entering the venue was a breeze.

Papadosio are a mix of Prog Rock, Livetronica, Jazz and Jamband, and their eclectic style reflected on the wide-ranging line-up. Along with Psy-Dub producer Ott, both acts were scheduled to play longer sets each night. After some afternoon Yoga, the music started both days around noon. The afternoons started off laid back, with sparse crowds but as the days went on, the crowd thickened out and were really ready to go by 7 or so.

As it was a new venue, there were still a few kinks to the weekend. As reported, a neighbor in the area is not exactly excited about the venue, and the late-night stage on Friday was shut down early at 2 AM (it was supposed to go until 5). Because of the legal issues with the sound, the late-night for Saturday was entirely canceled. The late-night stage itself was a hike up the mountain, but the venue had shuttles to remedy this and escorted people back down into the late of the night. To no fault of anyone, Ott’s Saturday’s set was cut short after only 45 minutes, as a lighting storm appeared in the area. Everyone went back to take shelter at their camp sites, some left but most stayed in the hopes that Papadosio would still be able to properly close out their festival. During the break the storm turned into a torrential downpour, but as quickly as it started, it stopped. Right before their scheduled set at 10, you could hear some sounds from the stage, and the lights turned back on. Someone from venue drove around in an ATV and let people know that Papadosio would be coming on soon.

Papadosio was able to play their final set, you could tell that everyone was enjoying getting a win at the end. Wonderland Forest was a great spot for their Summer Sequence Festival, the weekend was a success with only a few hiccups. Hopefully the venue is able to work out some of the issues and they will be able to come back next summer. Papadosio still has several dates planned throughout the summer, including the Secret Dreams Music & Arts Festival in Ohio and AVL Fest in North Carolina. Wonderland Forest will be bringing back the Disco Biscuits over the 4th of July weekend for their second Biscoland music festival.

    2. Hearing Aide: Dasychira’s “Undead”

NYC-based electronic artist Dasychira has released their second LP and first release in 3 years, Undead, on May 10. The album explores themes of transformation and adaptation, giving listeners a glimpse into Dasychira’s personal development.

      Undead

Dasychira was raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, but has been a New Yorker for the last decade. Studying at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, they took on their pseudonym allowing them to write and produce music while exploring their own identity. Since then, Dasychira has released works of all sizes, including the most recent, Undead.

After releasing their first EP Immolated in 2017, Dasychira went on to co-found the label unseelie in 2018, where they released their last two albums, Hollywood Forever and Undead.

This album represents Dasychira’s navigation through the drastic changes the world has faced over the past few years. These songs articulate their mental journey through COVID-19, war, environmental disasters, and rising technologies. Undead walks you through a dream-like state using a mix of synthesizers and a variety of instruments such as electric guitar, gamelan, and violin, blurring the lines between humans and technology.

      Dasychira

The album opens with “Bleed and Glow,” which establishes the feeling of being lost through its lyrics. Using electronics and synths, Dasychira conveys the need for fantasy during such a confusing time. The title track, “Undead,” features ballad-like violin and synth arrangements to express longing and desperation during a personal struggle.

The album’s closer, “Expand Yourself,” signifies the progress of Dasychira’s search for contentedness in the now. By making the electric guitar more prominent than the synth, the music becomes grounded in reality. This completes the album’s goal of accepting personal growth while their surroundings evolve out of their control.

    3. NYC-Based Electronic Musician Moby Shares new Track “where is your pride?”

Acclaimed New York City-based electronic musician, producer and activist Moby celebrates the life of Benjamin Zephaniah with the new track “where is your pride?,” out now taken from his 22nd studio album always centered at night, due out June 14th .

      Moby
      Moby, photo credit: Lindsay Hicks

The break-beat-driven track is spoken word with a powerful message delivered in the late dub poet’s characteristically warm burr. “Where is your love? / Where is your faith? / Where is your hope? / Where is your place? / Where is your pride?” Moby is proud to share a track with the late Benjamin Zephaniah to continue celebrating his life and note their aligned ideals: “As a vegan activist, and as a wise and compassionate man, Benjamin inspired me for many years. I hope that ‘where is your pride’ honors his legacy and also draws people’s attention to his life, work, and principles.”

Benjamin Zephaniah was a British writer, dub poet, actor, musician, and poetry and creative writing professor. He was included in The Times list of Britain’s top 50 post-war writers in 2008. He won the BBC Radio 4 Young Playwrights Festival Award in 1998 and received at least sixteen honorary doctorates.

Benjamin Zephaniah | Photo credit: Adrian Pope.

Moby was born Richard Melville Hall, in Harlem, in 1965. His father gave him his nickname, Moby, because of his hereditary relationship with Herman Melville. Moby started playing classical music and studying music theory when he was nine and came of age musically in the punk rock scene in and around New York in the early 80’s. He released his first single, “Go,” in 1991 (listed as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s best records) and has been making albums ever since. He has sold over 20,000,000 albums worldwide.

Even by Moby’s standards, always centered at night is special. The album features 13 collaborations from names many might recognize to others many undoubtedly will come to know. The captivating voices on always centered at night include Sudanese, Netherlands-based chanteuse Gaidaa, London-based, Burundian royal refugee J.P. Bimeni, and Kingston-raised, London-based Aynzli Jones. These are often personal songs, and the personal is the political, as is the border-defying nature of the work.

In his pursuit of new sounds, Moby has become a collector of voices. He’s a connoisseur of the timbre and texture of human vocal chords, whether sampling artists like Bessie Jones, Vera Hall, or Boy Blue, or working with superstars like David Bowie.

Thrilled to bring this dynamic body of work to the world, Moby explains, “For the last 30 years, I’ve worked with amazing singers–everyone from David Bowie to Freddie Mercury, Gregory Porter to Jill Scott. Always centered at night continues my love of collaborating, but has a focus of working with amazing singers who might not be as well known as David Bowie and Gregory Porter.” Though all tracks are collaborations, the music remains unmistakably Moby, dripping with glittery melodies and warm, hypnotic instrumentals.

    5. Boogie T Brings the ‘Flava’ Yet Again to Buffalo

The funky dubstep artist Boogie T made a stop in Buffalo on May 2. This multi-faceted producer left Town Ballroom with another EDM show for the books on his 140 Warriors Tour.

Boogie T, Photo Credit: Maddie McCafferty

It wouldn’t be called a warriors tour if Boogie T didn’t bring along his talented friends for the ride. Underground bass producer Chef Boyarbeatz began the night with his nostalgic take on heavy breaks. His Spongebob visuals were psychedelic and such a crowd a pleaser once he played his latest single “Squidwards Revenge.”

After, two hard-hitting producers performed a special b2b for Buffalo. Bringing bass music from Hong Kong, Saka joins technical artist FLY for a high energy performance. The two mix effortlessly on stage as they blend hip-hop, dubstep, and rap. The two artists constantly switch on and off the decks showcasing their latest work. Their Baby Keem flip of “Trademark USA” was a staple that got everyone hyped up.

Boogie T followed up this performance as he took over the stage with his Louisiana swag. This booming producer, also known as Brock Thornton has expressed himself through music since eight years old. His talent in both writing and playing various instruments is evident. Hence for the band he is also in when he’s not behind the decks: BOOGIE T.RIO. His knowledge of all things music and his southern twang brings a new funk to dubstep that is unlike anything others are doing in the scene.

From the Swamps to the Stage

Odds are you can pick out a Boogie T song instantly just from his unique sound. Plus it doesn’t matter how much time has passed, his hit tracks bring roaring energy anywhere at any time. That very much was true in Buffalo that night because the screams were unreal once he played “Smokin’ Dat Spliff,” and “2KFO.”

Boogie T, Photo Credit: Maddie McCafferty

Boogie T’s stage performance is a perfect mirror to his music. His music brings the wonky noises to the people so he brings the funk to the stage. His entertaining dance moves and infectious energy make him so lovable to fans. His visuals somehow extend his unique swag even further with cartoon-like images.

His collaborations with other artists are some of the best pieces of work to come out of the EDM world. Specifically, when Boogie T and Ganja White Night team up their songs are instant hits. So, of course Boogie T performed those songs, “Clarity” and the fan favorite single “Flava.”

Finally Boogie T left the stage but not without a roaring crowd response begging for an encore. He then returned and performed one obvious final track: “Encore.”
