  • New Music, Same Smiles: Porter Robinson Returns to Red Rocks

Electronic artist Porter Robinson made another career milestone with his performance at Red Rocks on Wednesday, October 16. After his summer release of his third album SMILE! 😀 the producer announced his first ever world tour. Denver was one of Porter’s last North American stops before he takes off to other continents.

Young artist Ericdoa opened up this beautiful night at Red Rocks. This Connecticut-based musician produces a fun yet angst-ridden mixture of hyper-pop, emo-rap, and trap. His stage design was so playful giving off the vibes of a bedroom from the 2000s. His energy was infectious as he was giggling with crowd and jumping on the bed on stage for his debut at this dream venue.

As Porter Robinson has grown throughout the years so has his style in music. Listening to his discography might take audiences on a span of musical genres, but what remains consistent is Porter’s ability to invite nostalgia through his music. He as always been an artist who looks to make people feel and confront emotions throughout his set.

This tour the artist brought his live band on stage to take his synth-pop tunes to a new level. Porter started off the night blasting confetti and a performance of “Knock Yourself Out XD.” The whole set in the mountains that night was a journey through Porter’s albums. He sectioned his set into three to highlight his three albums.

    Through Porter’s Tunes

He began with his latest release playing songs like “Easier to Love You” and “Mona Lisa.” The artist decided to get intimate with the crowd by asking them to collectively put their phones down and just experience one song wholeheartedly. Porter and his band then covered MGMT’s famous hit song “Kids.” It was such a youthful moment seeing everyone be fully present and dancing with each other on the rocks.

Going into the second segment of his set, it was dedicated to his 2021 album Nurture. A portion of this section was a piano medley. The artist stripped back a handful of songs giving the audience a touching acoustic session. Some of those songs included, “Sweet Time” and “Get Your Wish.”

Finally for the third segment of Porter’s set he took it all the way back to his famous 2014 album:  Worlds. This album is so special to so many of his listeners which is why Porter brought a longtime fan on stage. Lots of touching moments happened at the tail end of this set including performances of “Divinity” and “Goodbye to a World.”

    A Night to Remember

It was so special to be at Porter’s Red Rocks show that night. Especially considering his first ever performance there was 10 years ago when he opened up for Skrillex. Some fans in the audience had even shared they’d attended that show so long ago. It just goes to show a testament of the artistry Porter Robinson possesses and even with his musical changes he is still able to bring an energetic crowd together.

  • With Violin and Cello ARKAI Fused Classical Music With Pop, Rock and Jazz In A High-Energy Performance At Upper Jay Art Center’s “Recovery Lounge”

Merging their deep backgrounds in classical violin and cello performance and composition with influences from an array of musical genres, NYC based instrumental duo ARKAI captivated a full house at The Recovery Lounge in Upper Jay, NY on Sunday, September 20.

ARKAI performed as part of their current world tour and in support of their recently released debut album, Crossroads.

    ARKAI
    ARKAI at The Recovery Lounge

ARKAI is violinist Jonathan Miron and cellist Philip Sheegog, graduates of New York’s renowned classical music institution The Julliard School. The pair met early in their music career and realized that, despite their devotion to classical music, they had a deep appreciation for a wide variety of music as diverse as pop, folk, metal, jazz and rock, giving birth to the fusion that became ARKAI.

    Jonathan Miron, ARKAI

Performing a selection of genre-defying music that showcased both their instrumental virtuosity and compositional and arrangement skills, the duo performed with an energy way beyond what one would anticipate being delivered by violin and cello.  Their energy was infectious. Glances around the room showed not only smiles on appreciative faces, but listeners who moved with and to the music, clearly wanting to get out of their seats and dance.

    ARKAI at The Recovery Lounge

The pair performed the first half of their show on vintage classical instruments. Miron’s violin was made in Italy in 1709. Sheegog’s cello was made in 1914 in France, where it survived two World Wars. With those instruments they displayed their precise classical training, performing their unique arrangements of songs including A-ha’s “Take On Me”, The Beatles’ “Blackbird”, Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile”, as well as original compositions including “Patchwork”.

    ARKAI
    ARKAI at The Recovery Lounge

In the second half of the show the pair switched instruments, and delivered an electrifying, high-energy performance on electric violin and electric cello, backed by tracks which they composed and created using a variety of computer and MIDI based techniques to explore and create what might be called soundscapes. Driven by, or perhaps because they are clearly inseparable from the music they deliver, the pair became animated, both facially and in near dance-like movement, during portions of the electro-delivery. And, in a display of technique that might perhaps drive their former Julliard professors to pull their hair out, on one song they used debit cards to play their instruments, Sheegog scraping the strings of his cello with the edge of a card to “swipe” notes or tapping it on the electric cello’s pickup for drum-sounds and Miron tapping the sides and edges of his electric violin to add percussion.

    ARKAI
    ARKAI at The Recovery Lounge

This “electric” portion of their performance included their compositions “Ascent”, which they said was inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey”, and “Tokyo Sidecar”; their arrangement of Cold Play’s “Clocks”, and a composition they created based upon the melody of Joji’s “Glimpse of Us” which went viral on TikTok.  They also played their composition “Letters”, which came together while the pair was separated during the Covid lockdown period, when Miron and Sheegog would each record themselves on iPhone Voice Memos playing musical “ideas” or contributions and send the recordings back and forth to each other as “audio letters” created in a time of loneliness, sorrow and the hope to be together again. Those bits and pieces ultimately became “Letters” as a musical offering of hope to those in need of being brought together.

    ARKAI at The Recovery Lounge

ARKAI’s music, whether their originals or unique arrangements of others, is a signature sound resulting from skilled and exploratory improvisation, a collaborative creative process and pure instrumental virtuosity.  In performance they bring these talents full on, playing true to the score in the tightly composed sections, and following their creative spirit in-the-moment in improv sections, inspiring and feeding off each other and deeply enjoying every moment of their performance.

    ARKAI
    Philip Sheegog, ARKAI

Their fusion, both as musician/composers and in the diversity of the music they explore, was born in part out of a realization that, in their words, they were the “weird guys” in traditional classical music; and out of a strong desire “to stay true to your heart” and to “do something not done before”.  And that was the genesis of ARKAI.

    Jonathan Miron, ARKAI

Upcoming performances include October 10 at Town Hall, NYC, November 3 at The Strand Center for the Arts in Plattsburgh, NY, and November 14-16, PRISMA, NYC.  Their tour will also take them to other major US cities and Toronto as well as overseas to Berlin, Basel, and Rabat.  Their newly released CD Crossroads is a collection of seven ARKAI compositions ranging from traditional sounding classical pieces to electro-soundscape-emo music that explore a “journey of discovering one’s voice, overcoming adversity, and embracing new dreams”.  ARKAI’s music puts you in touch with your emotions, and if you allow yourself the freedom you “see a video” as you listen.

    Philip Sheegog, ARKAI

This review and the photographs presented with it are truly an unintended consequence of attending this performance as a last-minute spontaneous decision, becoming captivated at the outset, capturing images of ARKAI’s performance on an iPhone.

    ARKAI at The Recovery Lounge

ARKAI’s performance was presented by Upper Jay Art Center at its “Recovery Lounge” space, where it hosts year-round music, art, and theatre ranging from touring artists and groups to its own productions in an intimate and out-of-the ordinary performance space.

  • Porter Robinson Tears Up Forest Hills Stadium

On Saturday, August 31, Porter Robinson took the stage at Forest Hills Stadium for the New York stop on his worldwide SMILE! 😀 tour.

    porter robinson

Hot off the release of his latest album, SMILE! :D, Robinson was joined by an incredible four-piece band consisting of keys, drums, guitar, and a dual bassist and backup vocalist. Regardless of whether the band was propped up on the mini stage behind him, or if they joined him on top of the enormous LED screen center stage, they were a stellar support system for Robinson’s infectious energy.

The seats of Forest Hills Stadium were filled with an endearing and incredibly excited crowd, with many dressed in the pink and black motifs of the album. The rest were adorned in bright, colorful gear resembling his other two albums. Others held signs, fans, or sparklers, occasionally bringing the party out of the pit and into the stands. No matter what album Robinson was playing from, the crowd sang along as they danced and jumped around together in disjointed harmony.

Robinson opened the tour with a full rendition of his latest album, which, unlike his previous work, resembled that of a rock band. The rest of his show went along in his own Eras-Tour-style fashion, dedicating sections of the evening to his albums with special announcements before each one.

    porter robinson

When Robinson was wrapped up with SMILE! 😀, the enormous LED screen adorned with colorful graphics and lyrics in bright, sparkly fonts would transform into a billboard, with each album’s title and years stretching across the screen.

After the announcements, Porter Robinson played each of his albums in their entirety. It was endearing to see him look back on all of his work with such passion and admiration but also to see his evolution as an artist. His mixing of music styles from alternative and electronic genres had definitely changed over the years, and it was clear that he intends to continue this steady growth in the future. It was refreshing to see, not only because artists with his acclaim and style tend to be stagnant, but because the passion and thought put into his work is clear.

    porter robinson

The show’s energy seemed neverending, with a crowd that wanted to keep the party going long after the concert’s end. During his set, he brought out special guest Frost Children, who collaborated with him on his song “Mona Lisa,” and even invited his bassist to perform vocals on his older tracks, particularly from Nurture and Worlds.

Porter Robinson ended the show with an encore of “Shelter” and “Cheerleader,” two of his biggest hits and the most explosive performances of the night. The crowd welcomed him back on stage with resounding cheers and applause, chanting, “One more time!” as he walked off stage. With the end of “Cheerleader” came flashing pink lights and an explosion of paper confetti, blowing away in the wind and getting in the crowd’s hair as they made their exit.

    porter robinson

The rest of Porter Robinson’s tour continues through the end of 2024 and into 2025, spanning across five continents and over 20 countries. Robinson’s next show will take him to Atlanta, Georgia, on September 5. More dates in South America are yet to be announced.

  • NEEMFest Returns to Homer in September

NEEMFest electronic music festival will return to Homer, NY on September 13th. The annual event continues in its mission of bringing electronic performances and workshops to Central New York.

    A performance from NEEMFest 2019
    A Performance from NEEMFest 2019

NEEMFest dates back over 23 years, when Howard Moscovitz organized the Electro-music conference in Philadelphia. The event worked to showcase the versatility of electronic equipment in making music that could be both dreamy and danceable. Following its initial success, the conference evolved into an annual event.

In 2017, the event organizers approached Homer’s Center for the Arts, with the town soon becoming its new home. Since the move, NEEMFest has worked to increase community engagement through cooperation with local school and university music programs.

Since its start, NEEMFest has prided itself in highlighting cutting edge electronic music. In its history, the festival has attracted performers from across the Northeast, each bringing a unique take to the genre. Past artists have utilized modified cellos, industrial fans, synthesizers, and video game consoles in their music. In this large umbrella of electronic music, artists incorporate genres from classical to rock, creating a diverse musical landscape. Aiding these performances are projected visualizations made by a team of video artists.

    Homer Center for the Arts

In the past, NEEMFest has highlighted a wide variety of electronic musicians and composers. Highlighted artists include video game composers, planetarium sound designers, and avant-garde musicians. Due to the quality of NEEMFest’s performances, the Philadelphia Inquirer has hailed it as the “Woodstock of Electronic Music.”

NEEMFest 2024 will feature over 40 performances lasting from September 13-15th. On top of its musical performances, the festival offers a number of educational events. Included in these are artist talks & demonstrations and experimental music workshops. These events aid in NEEMFest’s mission of community building and engagement. NEEMFest’s events will take place at the Homer Center for the Arts, located at 72 S Main St.

On top of these scheduled events, a special off-site performance is also planned. The performance is a rendition of William Basinski’s “The Disintegration Loops,” composed in memory of the 9/11 attacks. NEEMFest’s organizers plan to host the event in a meditative space in Homer that best suits the piece. Following NEEMFest 2024, its organizers will release a digital compilation on Bandcamp highlighting performances from the festival.
