  • Hearing Aide: Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band ‘Used Cars’

Buffalo-based rock group Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band released their sophomore record, Used Cars, on November 3. The 8-track album is a follow up to their 2019 debut release, Spacestation AM500.

Used Cars by Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band

Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band formed in 2018 in Buffalo, with a collaboration of longtime friends. The band consists of Timothy Patrick Henderson, Matt DiStasio (drums), and Bub Crumlish on bass.

The first track on Used Cars, a title track, is a strong start to the record. With resonant guitars, crooning vocals, and a tempo that urges the listener to sway back and forth, “Used Cars” is a easy yet captivating first track on the group’s sophomore album

Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band

The fifth track on the record, “North of the Border,” stands out energetically against the rest of the record. This song picks up the pace significantly, and shapes a tangible story throughout the track. The only drawback is the shorter run time of only 2:18, as it is certainly a notable favorite on the album.

“Winning Number,” the sixth track on Used Cars, slows back down just slightly, but not to any disadvantage. “Winning Number” evokes more personality from the vocal intonations, with Henderson’s speak-singing throughout the verses. The track has a captivating outro sequence of guitars and other indecipherable instruments, reminiscent of U2’s “Bad.”

Used Cars is the sophomore album from Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band, available on all streaming platforms on November 3. Timothy Alice & The Dead Star Band is Timothy Patrick Henderson, Matt DiStasio, and Bub Crumlish.

  • Five Can’t-Miss Shows in Rochester This November

Well, that October was a treat wasn’t it? But, no rest for the weary live music fanatic. November is hot on it’s heels with a concert cornucopia of it’s own. Here are five delectable morsels to feast your ears on in Rochester this month.

November 6: Dumbo Gets Mad at Bug Jar

The Bug Jar continues its string of pulling in fresh and interesting talent from abroad with this Italian group coming to little old Rochester. Dumbo Gets Mad is a psychedelic pop band that is textured and rhythmic with a patina of that European stangeness. The bill is rounded out by avant-garde drumming wizard Sean Hamilton, Drippers, and Breastfed to Death. Sure to be another fun one.

Tickets are $15 and music should get going around 9pm.

November 8: Charlie Parr at Bop Shop Records

Almost exactly a year after his last Rochester show, at the Arbor Loft, Charlie Parr returns to town for a gig at the much smaller and more intimate space at Bop Shop Records. If you liked him then you’re gonna love him here, and if you missed him then, no better time or place to get to love him. As we said then: “Through finger picks, slides, foot stomps and that ragged voice with unexpected range, there wasn’t empty space wanting for anything more.”

Tickets are $20/$25dos and music will start right around 8pm.

November 9: Vijay Iyer Trio at Kilbourn Hall

The best set of jazz in Rochester this year may not happen during jazz fest. Vijay Iyer returns to play a hometown show for the first time in almost a decade with his dynamite trio, with Linda May Han Oh on bass and Jeremy Dutton replacing Iyer’s usual drummer Tyshawn Sorey. But no matter, this is going to be a stunning set of piano trio in the stunning confines of Kilbourn Hall.

Tickets range from $32 to $45 and the show will start at 7:30pm.

November 14: Jake Xerxes Fussell at Abilene

In the just a singer with a guitar category of folk music, you can’t really do much better than Jake Xerxes Fussell. This Georgian plumbs the depths of traditional folk and blues music and puts his own magical spin on everything he plays. From Philadelphia, stellar songwriter Rosali will open with a special solo set of her own that should make this one hell of an evening at the old saloon.

Tickets are $20 and the music gets started at 7:30pm.

November 26: Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real at Water Street Music Hall

Lukas Nelson, if you didn’t know, is the son of country legend Willie Nelson, who he of course has played with. He and the Promise of the Real were tapped to be Neil Young’s backing band and he also has sung with Lady Gaga. So yeah, pretty good creds. But Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real don’t need to impress you with lineage, these guys are carving out their own legendary path.

Tickets are $32 and the show starts at 8pm.

  • Lynyrd Skynyrd & ZZ TOP Add Shows in Syracuse, Bethel, Wantagh, and Darien Center

The titans of American classic rock ZZ TOP and Lynyrd Skynyrd have announced 36 additional appearances of their joint co-headlining tour – The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour. The tour is set to stop four times in New York, including Syracuse, Bethel, Wantagh, and Darien Center.

ZZ TOP, known for their beards, hotrod cars, spinning guitars, and that magic keychain, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, known for their critically acclaimed album Pronounced Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd, have put their musical talents together for an unforgettable show performing across the United States, now with even more dates, so you have no excuse to miss it.

It was in 1969 Houston when ZZ TOP coalesced from the core of two rival bands, Billy Gibbons’ Moving Sidewalks and Frank Beard and Dusty Hill’s American Blues. ZZ Top‘s 1973 album release, Tres Hombres, catapulted them to national attention with the hit “La Grange,” which is still one of the band’s signature pieces today. Eliminator, their 1983 album was something of a paradigm shift for ZZ TOP.

Their blues roots skew was intact but their high-tech-age trappings were added to the mix that soon found a visual outlet with such tracks as “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” on the nascent MTV. It was one of the record industry’s first albums to have been certified Diamond, far beyond Gold and Platinum, a reflection of sales exceeding ten million units.

As a touring outfit, they have performed before millions of fans over four continents and have been the subject of their own Grammy-nominated documentary titled That Little Ol’ Band From Texas. The band’s line-up of the bearded Gibbons and Hill and Beard, who ironically is clean-shaven, remained intact for more than 50 years. When Dusty temporarily departed the tour in the summer of 2021, Elwood Francis entered the picture accepting the directive from Dusty to be the perfect choice to stand in on the bass guitar and now handles the low-end duties for the band for the present as well as into the future.

The elements that keep ZZ TOP fresh can be summed up in the three words of the band’s internal mantra: “Tone, Taste, and Tenacity.” As genuine roots performers, they have few peers. Their influences are both the originators of the form – Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, et al – as well as the British blues rocker Jimi Hendrix who emerged generations before ZZ’s ascendance.

They have sold hundreds of millions of records over the course of their career, have been officially designated as Heroes of The State of Texas, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (by Keith Richards, no less), and have been referenced in countless cartoons and sitcoms. They are true rock icons and, against all odds, they’re really just doing what they’ve always done.

As Lynyrd Skynyrd celebrates the 50 anniversary of the band’s critically acclaimed debut album Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd’, they resonate as deeply with their multi-generational fan base today as when they first emerged out of Jacksonville, Florida in 1973.

Few ensembles have had a deep impact in creating a lifestyle as Skynyrd has. The band travels forward with a primary mission of celebrating a legacy that honors all who have had a resonating contribution to the lives of hundreds of millions of fans globally. Former members Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Ed King, Billy Powell, Bob Burns, and Leon Wilkeson alongside others will forever remain significant contributors to this indelible repertoire and the band’s colorful history.

Today, Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks on with a current line-up featuring Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Damon Johnson, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Keith Christopher, Peter Keys, Carol Chase and Stacy Michelle.

It’s about the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and what it stands for, what the fans are all about. There’s nothing like getting out there playing a great show with Skynyrd and seeing people love this music.

    Van Zant

With a catalog of over 60 albums, billions of streams, and tens of millions of records sold, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.

The artist pre-sale begins on Tuesday, October 31 at 10 AM, and will be available until 10 PM on Thursday, November 2. The public on-sale begins at 10 AM on Friday, November 3. For tickets, and select VIP packages, visit here.

  • Marina Laurendi Captures Halloween Spirit in “halloween party”

Indie singer-songwriter, Marina Laurendi, is back with a second single off her upcoming Sophomore EP. The new track “halloween party,” is an ode to childhood innocence, the comfort and safety of home, and the bittersweet feeling of aging into adulthood, coming just in time for the spooky season.

Marina Laurendi is a singer/songwriter and musician, originally from the Western New York area. She started performing as an actress, singer, and dancer at a young age. Her career in musical theater led her to NYC, where she performed around the East Coast and Off-Broadway. Her music takes influence from the pulse of the NYC scene and the calmness of her Western NY upbringing.

Fusing elements of cinematic pop, alternative rock, and singer-songwriter lyricism, her nostalgic and singular sound is a breath of fresh air. She is poetic and moody, with haunting vocals and catchy melodies. Her music is steeped in personal experience yet is universally relatable.

“halloween party” is textured and dripping in ambiance, balancing soft indie rock with tender intimacy. Featuring undertones of singer-songwriter folk, muted acoustic guitar strums, quiet drums, and melodic lines, she captures the sounds that bring about the warm fuzzy feelings associated with home. The track is authentic and raw, featuring voice memos from Marina Laurendi’s childhood friends. It is honest and builds up beautifully into a bittersweet and nostalgic crescendo.

I wrote the song when we were getting ready to sell my childhood home and I was deciding what was next for me. That transitional period stirred up so many emotions and it got me reminiscing about my adolescence. Halloween parties at my childhood home are such a core memory for me and I associate them directly with my childhood and teenage years. When I think of them, I feel such a fondness for home and an appreciation of my upbringing that I didn’t truly value it until later in life.

    Marina Laurendi

“halloween party” by Marina Laurendi is the perfect song to add to your fall playlist. Catch up with her new releases and future shows here.

  • Armani Caesar Shines as First Lady of Griselda

The reach of Griselda Records remains immeasurable. From murals translated across continents to ritualistic celebrations in concert, people appreciate those who stamp their legacy in a way that could never be replicated.

    The Liz by Armani Caesar

Griselda grew organically and through a brilliant scheme devised by Westside Gunn. Armani Caesar, first lady of Griselda, serves as a cornerstone to their rise and continual ascension.

    Buffalo: the Queen City

Armani Caesar often embodies the lavish aesthetic. Her mixtapes consistently revolve around street couture. Mixtapes named after Liz Claiborne, Miss Elizabeth [WWE] and Elizabeth Taylor showcase the lane and luxurious vibes she provides. She dropped out of college the minute she learned how to sell Iceberg and other apparel items discussed in Marketing class at North Carolina Central University. “Hip-Hop in Context 1973-1997” taught by Kid N Play and 9th Wonder at this HBCU changed Armani’s perspective immensely.

Armani Caesar poses beneath spiral stairs while donning a ‘Buffalo Kids’ necklace

This artist expresses herself in an uninhibited and nonchalant manner. Treating hip-hop as competition runs in the veins of any Griselda artist. Yet, Armani makes it seem like she only conquers hip-hop to generate an additional stream of income. That type of disposition adds to the overall appeal of the artist. Additionally, her fashion expertise continues to create many satisfied customers at Armani’s Closet.

    Producer Over Consumer

With an entrepreneurial mindset – Armani remains steadfast in all of her endeavors. In 2020, she signed to Griselda and began to cement her legacy as the first lady on the roster. She joined GxFR during quite the pinnacle of musical production for her and her Griselda teammates. Upon rapping over a legendary DJ Premier beat, her abilities began to sharpen quickly.

    Liz 2 by Armani Caesar

The way that Westside Gunn reignites and branches individuals together proves why Griselda’s reach will stand the test of time for generations to come. The amount of individually talented people comprise quite the collective of ambitious people who push the genre forward. Armani Caesar could quite possibly be the flyest emcee of the bunch and will continue to elevate her skillset down the line.

AC could tour in 2024 so make sure you stay tuned to see where she might perform.

This musician’s concert performance is nothing short of an emotional experience. All of the colorful imagery, projections, and use of a huge curtain captured the navigation through life’s highs and lows. His opening montage utilized a curtain that projected symbols depicting the turbulences that life takes us through. With the drop of the curtain, San Holo stood invoking the audience on a journey.

San Holo mostly played songs off of his recently released album EXISTENTIAL DANCE MUSIC. This included his hits “DON’T LOOK DOWN” and “…BRING BACK THE COLOR.” His artistry shines through his candid songwriting and ability to translate that effortlessly on stage.

This night in Buffalo forged room for an intimate connection with fans. This is especially so when he performed his fan favorite song “LIGHT.” The crowd appeared mesmerized and connected throughout. His shows speak to that existential thinking and allow people to move through that with dance. A new movement that is building in the electronic music scene.

  • Chris Stapleton To Continue “All-American Road Show” With Stop in Darien Center in July

Chris Stapleton will continue his extensive “All-American Road Show” tour through next summer including one confirmed show in Darien Center, while teasing his newest album set to release November 10.

The upcoming performances add to yet another landmark year for the 8x Grammy, 15x CMA and 15x ACM Award-winner, who will release his highly anticipated new album, Higher, November 10.

Already receiving critical attention, Stapleton has unveiled three album tracks ahead of the release: “It Takes A Woman,” “Think I’m In Love With You” and “White Horse,” of which Billboard praised “a hell-raising anthem, meant to be blared with windows down and enjoyed with ears ringing. ‘White Horse’ finds Stapleton pairing an outlaw swagger with some heaven-scraping vocals, going for the gusto throughout the chorus to try and match the guitar snarl.”

Additionally, Stapleton is nominated for three more awards at this year’s 57th Annual CMA Awards: Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Musical Event of the Year (“We Don’t Fight Anymore” with Carly Pearce). The awards ceremony will be broadcast live from Nashville on ABC Wednesday, November 8 at 8:00pm ET/7:00pm CT.

Alongside Stapleton (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, slide electric guitar), the new album features Cobb (acoustic guitar, eclectic guitar), J.T. Cure (bass), Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Derek Mixon (drums), Morgane (background vocals, synthesizer, tambourine) and Lee Pardini (organ, piano).
