  • Album Review: 222 Reasons why Lil Tjay Did Not Disappoint

    Coming off his near-fatal shooting, Bronx crooner Lil Tjay was up against hip hop history. After all, surviving 7 gunshot wounds was reason enough to anticipate the “Calling My Phone” rapper’s next release. However, hip hop’s ever-changing landscape and Tjay’s replicable sound may have done the rapper in when it came to sales. With the news that his first project since his shooting, 222, had garnered just 22K in first-week streaming sales it came with a perception that Tjay’s album was a disappointment, or worse, that he was falling off.

    Album Review

    In light, this isn’t to say that 222 is a great album by any means. This latest effort is an inconsistent body of work that showcases many of Tjay’s talents, but also highlights why Lil Uzi Vert’s idiosyncratic effort is the only hip hop album to debut at number 1 on Billboard in 2023. Although with Tjay’s track record and a story to tell, there were high expectations. Nonetheless, some head scratching choices left the project feeling a bit manufactured.

    222 starts strong with “Nightshift” and “June 22nd,” as both records showcased an underrated part of Tjay’s repertoire. Known for his catchy hooks, piercing vocals and crooning melodies, he decides to start the album with two emphatic rap records that have an authentic New York feel. “Nightshift” sees the Bronx native put his stamp on the project and rap game, followed by the witty, story-telling June 22nd, depicting his almost-deadly shooting. It wouldn’t be long before Tjay got vulnerable as the next five songs saw him get into his melodic bag. The reflective “Nobody” and “Scared 2 Be Lonely” are both very good while “2 Grown” featuring The Kid LAROI will probably go diamond on Tik Tok.

    Where it Went Wrong?

    However, things take a turn in the album’s second half with what feels like quite a few filler records and questionable decision making. Tjay’s youth might also play a part in this, as no one must have told him that nobody over the age of 14 wants to sing along to a song whose hook is “Bla, Bla, Bla” — although the song isn’t bad as he and Fivio Foreign mesh well. He follows that by leaning too much into his singing on “Someone Who Cares” which made for a hard listen where piercing quickly turned nasally.

    The rest of the album follows this same ebb-and-flow of quality versus content. “Forgot I Was The 1” is a good record, but that’s followed by an out-of-place Jadakiss feature — and it didn’t help that the mixing made the veteran rhymer sound no less than 190 years old. The head scratching decisions continued with a sequel to his Billboard charting return single on “Beat The Odds Pt 2,” featuring a Polo G verse that derailed what was meant to be an emotional comeback record. Ultimately, Tjay finishes the album strong with the honest “Foster Baby” — where he reveals he was adopted — and the contemplative “Grateful.”

    Why Lil Tjay Didn’t dissapoint

    All things considered, what could have have been Lil Tjay’s defining project will end up being more fodder for the microwave music culture. Yet, its hard to see anything the “Pop Out” rapper could have done to generate substantially better numbers. While it may be concerning that he’s now doing half of his what his debut sold only 4 years ago, such is the state of NY hip hop’s commercially. After all, Fivio Foreign assisted by A-list talent mustered 29k first-week sales. In the streaming era, it is much more important to keep a few charting songs and known features than a great project top-to-bottom. It’s what the system rewards.

    While these factors all play a part in why first-week sales shouldn’t matter too much for Tjay, the most obvious hindrance to his growth as an artist is his sonic likeness to A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. The two Bronx rappers maintain a tense relationship with Tjay usually on the defending end of his music. Regardless, it’s hard to ignore the similarities on the Summer Walker mashup “Stressed” and “Foster Baby” which both sound like carbon copy A Boogie records. But then again, is it right to fault Tjay for sounding like someone who grew up 20 minutes from him?

    Nonetheless, the mainstream audience hold the true power of sway and right now A Boogie is the preferred New York crooner. With allegations of his own drop-off in quality the “Look Back at It” rapper more than doubled Tjay’s first-week numbers with his last project. All in all, Tjay may have given himself the best advice on “June 22nd” rapping, “the show’s lined up, album’s soundin’ like some crack, so I’m excited for the music comin’ out and for the sack.”

  • Are Women Gaining More Power As Artists?

    A question has been floated as of late: Are Women Saving New York Rap? The answer may not be as definitive as you think. Artists like Maiya the Don put forth lyrical bodies of work that provide refreshment and flavor to save the genre one song at a time. Do more of those individuals tend to be women?

    No debate surrounds the fact that New York hip-hop could use saving. Much of what hits the mainstream airwaves recycles and regurgitates the same radio-friendly formulas. Therefore, I see the original question and raise it: Are Women Gaining more Power as Artists? While all signs point to yes, one Brooklyn individual, Maiya the Don particularly embodies the notion that women have become hip-hop powerhouses, not just an accessory.

    Women Increase Industry Footprint 

    As hip-hop grew, opportunities afforded to female artists were often limited. Often, having a woman in your crew was seen as the thing to do. Eve from Ruff Ryders exists as a prime example. Known as “a pitbull in a skirt,” Ruff Ryders chose her because she fit their rough-and-tumble type mold and she could rap very well. Without ascribing status or making assumptions – it is fair to say women have elevated their role within the hip-hop ecosystem.

    Maiya the Don stomped confidently into her spot as a New York star. After gaining a large following on TikTok with videos displaying her beauty, makeup and personality – her manager helped position her within the music industry. While on TikTok, she promoted her music as a piece to the content puzzle. Doing so granted her the ability to speak as a representative of Black Visionary Voices – a TikTok initiative that recognizes Black creatives, business owners and cultural changemakers.

    TikTok serves as a primary vehicle to transmit any message given that it has the least amount of barriers or hierarchy. Many artists will tease a snippet of their song as a ‘sound’ so that users can create videos which may cause the song to reach more listeners. Once snippets of Maiya the Don’s hit single, “Telfy” started to make the rounds – the beast of a song became difficult to contain.

    Starting from Scratch

    Maiya the Don knows how to communicate what she wants while making music. Her novice knowledge of the terms producers use does not limit her process, whatsoever. She still finds a way to verbalize where she wants what sounds to be placed to invoke maximum effect. When making a hit, all elements must be on point and that deals directly with tasteful tactics employed by people with expertise.

    Women who speak from the vantage point of strength and authenticity continue to receive their just due. As ladies become less of an accessory, Maiya the Don created massive viral buzz around her household hit, “Telfy.” Maiya’s fashionable accessory – the Telfar bag – served as the thematic cornerstone for the song that propelled her into the spotlight. The song carries all the core components of a hit sonically, makes fashion statements and most importantly – popularizing self-worth, confidence and hyper-femininity. 

    Women Evolve within Hip-Hop

    Throughout hip-hop history, many people presented women to the world through a one-dimensional lens. Nowadays, women like Maiya the Don reclaim power, demand respect and utilize fashion to reshape their role as hip-hop artists. A person who owns their narrative and creates a unique adaptation of their own aesthetic continually dismantles stereotypes and evolves as a powerhouse.

    Maiya the Don’s Second Single – Dusties

    Women of today refuse to be treated as lesser. Maiya the Don firmly cements her feet in hip-hop concrete by embracing sexual objectification in order to use it to her advantage. Today’s women operate with liberation in mind, speak up for what they want and function as empowered sexual beings. Having her needs fulfilled cannot come second as Maiya the Don will not stop until she reaches her goals.

    Catch her live in concert on Day 3 of Rolling Loud in Miami, FL on July 23rd, although Maiya has the best stage presence in New York.

    Maiya spoke with BleuMag about her favorite performance, saying “Probably Albany, New York. It was a huge crowd, and I got to open up for Glorilla, who I love. I think she’s so hard. That was my best performance by the way. I’ve never felt like that before.. I was shocked because I was pretty far from home. The fact that they were going that hard for me had me, like, Period!”

  • Dave Chappelle Announces August Dates At Madison Square Garden

    Legendary comedian Dave Chappelle recently announced his fall tour which includes four stops in NYC. Dave Chappelle Live gets underway on August 22, 23, 25, and 26 from the world famous Madison Square Garden

    Chappelle is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedians of all time. His work includes multiple stand-up specials, his own sketch show, appearances on Saturday Night Live, and acting. In 2019 Chappelle was awarded the illustrious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. All in all the comedian has racked up five Primetime Emmy Awards and four Grammys. 

    Attendees at the show will be prohibited from using cell phones, cameras, or other recording devices during the performances. Upon arrival, all phones and smart watches will be secured until the end of the show. Guests will still have possession of their phones however use is only permitted in designated areas. Anyone caught with a cellphone in the venue will be immediately ejected.

  • Gov’t Mule: The Epic Finale – 4th Day of the Great South Bay Music Festival

    The Great South Bay Music Festival came to a spectacular conclusion on its 4th and final day with the legendary Gov’t Mule headlining the event. The festival had been fantastic with three days of great music, but the final day was going to be extraordinary. Gov’t Mule was going to perform a special set called Dark Side of the Mule, promising a unique and unforgettable experience for the crowd.

    As the sun began to set on the Great South Bay, the set by Gov’t Mule began, opening with two Mule classics, “Game Face” and “Time to Confess.” The roaring crowd welcomed the band led by the immensely talented Warren Haynes. After that they launched into the mesmerizing rendition of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond,” a classic Pink Floyd anthem that instantly captivated the audience. Haynes’ soulful vocals and extraordinary guitar skills set the tone for an unforgettable show.

    The Dark Side of the Mule set continued with a thrilling rendition of “Have a Cigar,” followed by the ethereal and atmospheric “Breathe.” The crowd was taken on a journey through Pink Floyd’s iconic album, The Dark Side of the Moon, as Gov’t Mule flawlessly performed “On The Run,” “Time,” and “Money.”

    The audience was treated to the expansive and transcendent “Echoes,” which created an almost otherworldly experience for those in attendance. Gov’t Mule closed their set with an epic performance of “Comfortably Numb.” The combination of Haynes’ emotive vocals and soul-stirring guitar solo left the crowd in a state of pure euphoria, making it a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable night of music.

    Prior to Gov’t Mule’s headline set, the audience was treated to a mix of talented artists throughout the day. The lineup for the show featured Tauk, Brandon Taz Niederauer, Duane Betts and Palmetto Motel, Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening, and Gov’t Mule.

    Duane Betts’ set showcased his own artistry and paid tribute to the legacy of the Allman Brothers with renditions of classics like “Blue Sky” and “Oh Well,” a Fleetwood Mac cover. The crowd embraced the familiar tunes and appreciate the chance to experience the magic of the Allman Brothers once again.

    Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening took the audience on a nostalgic journey through the timeless classics of the iconic rock band. Hits like “Good Times Bad Times” and “Ramble On” had the crowd singing along and reminiscing about the golden era of rock music.

    Young guitar prodigy Brandon Taz Niederauer wowed the audience with his virtuoso performance. The energy and skill he brought to the stage were beyond his years, leaving everyone in awe.

    The festival had a great mix of different artists and music styles, showing how music can bring people together, no matter where they come from. It went beyond differences and made everyone feel happy and connected. The event truly celebrated the special feeling of experiencing live music that touches people deeply inside.

  • Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lauryn Hill and More Highlight 2023 Global Citizen Festival Lineup

    Returning to the Great Lawn of Central Park in New York City on Saturday, September 23 at 2:00 pm, international advocacy organization Global Citizen has announced its lineup for the 2023 free admission festival.

    In addition to the headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ms. Lauryn Hill, Megan Thee Stallion, Conan Gray, and the Stray Kids will take the Central Park stage. As a mashup between rock, hip-hop, R&B, and other genres, the festival brings together some of the industry’s best for the annual event.

    Global Citizen’s campaign focuses on the major issues surrounding extreme poverty worldwide, the impacts of climate change, hunger crises, and inequities affecting women and girls.

    Beginning in Australia in 2008, Global Citizen continues operations in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Berlin, Melbourne, Lagos, etc. to emphasize the movement to put an end to extreme poverty.

    The festival’s curator since 2015, Chris Martin of Coldplay, and the Global Citizen Festival’s co-founders Ryan Gall and Hugh Evans have put together spectacular shows not only in New York City but in other landmark cities across the globe.

    Last year saw Usher, SZA, and Tems perform at Black Star Square in Accra, Ghana in front of thousands, all to help raise money and spread awareness for the organization’s cause.

    Over the past 10 years, 43.6 billion dollars in commitments have been announced through Global Citizen platforms, impacting nearly 1.3 billion lives worldwide, with attendees of this year’s event being able to add even more to that total through awareness and donations.

  • Day 3 of the Great South Bay Music Festival with Phil Lesh and the Eric Krasno Trio

    The third day of the Great South Bay Music Festival was one of the most anticipated and unforgettable days of the event. With the legendary Phil Lesh and Friends headlining the show, the ecstatic crowd was treated to an unforgettable three-and-a-half-hour set filled with Grateful Dead classics.

    Phil Lesh, the founding member of the Grateful Dead, brought together a group of exceptionally talented musicians to join him on stage for an unforgettable performance. The lineup included Eric Krasno on guitar and vocals, Jason Crosby on keys and vocals, John Molo on drums, James Casey on sax and vocals, Jennifer Hartswick on trumpet and vocals, and Grahame Lesh on guitar and vocals.

    The setlist kicked off with the classic “Shakedown Street,” setting the tone for a night of euphoric melodies. The band members really clicked well and it was obvious to see, as they effortlessly fed off each other’s energy. With Eric Krasno’s mesmerizing guitar solos, Jennifer Hartswick’s soulful singing, and Phil Lesh’s iconic bass lines, the audience was treated to an immersive musical experience.

    The band didn’t hold back in delivering Grateful Dead favorites, and “Friend of the Devil” had the entire crowd singing along. The musicians felt like close friends as they played together, sharing melodies and harmonies that showed how well they understood each other’s music.

    Earlier in the day, before the Phil Lesh and Friends set, the Eric Krasno Trio took the stage. Eric Krasno, already dazzling the audience as part of the headliner, showcased his versatility and talent in this earlier performance. The trio delivered a captivating set, drawing from various genres and captivating the audience with their musical finesse.

    Aside from the headliners, the day also featured a diverse lineup of acts, each adding their unique flavor to the festival. Acts like Neighbor, Cassandra House, and Baked Shrimp contributed to the day’s eclectic vibe, ensuring that there was something for every music enthusiast.

    As the festival’s last notes filled the air, everyone felt incredibly happy. Day 3 of the Great South Bay Music Festival was an exciting celebration of music and togetherness.   • Watch: Sleepy Hallow Puts Sheff G On The Phone at Rolling Loud

    As Rolling Loud Miami came and went, fans got to enjoy a host of performances by over 100 of hip hop’s best acts. Likewise, there were those unable to take part for various reasons. Notably, Lil Durk did not perform due to his recent hospitalization for dehydration. Likewise, Sheff G did not take part but due to his recent legal troubles. The troubled-but-talented Brooklyn native was to make his much-awaited return at Rolling Loud Miami after serving nearly two years behind bars for gun possession. However, the “We Getting Money” rapper got himself in hot water after he and close friend Sleepy Hallow were part of a large-scale gang indictment.

    As for Sheff G in particular, the indictment accuses him of offering up money and expensive jewelry in exchange for the commission of violent acts. In one alleged incident, Sheff G organized a crew of three shooters, drove them to a crime scene, and then acted as the getaway driver.

    “Sheff G became a prominent member of this gang and became central to our investigation,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “Sheff G used a lot of the money that he earned to facilitate further gang activity. He encouraged gang members to participate in violent crimes.”

    Sleepy Hallow Puts Sheff G on The Phone

    While Sleepy Hallow was able to bail out and make his Rolling Loud dates, the latest charges were a major setback for Sheff G who was initially scheduled to be released sometime in June and had teased his return to the stage at Rolling Loud. In light of his close friend’s circumstances, Sleepy Hallow bridged the gap between Sheff G and the fans by putting the incarcerated rapper on the phone, to much fanfare from the crowd.

    In the short clip, Sheff G gets the Rolling Loud crowd amped by telling them to “turn the f**ck up.” With the drill scene’s recent stagnation Sheff G’s presence woud’ve been a major boost for New York hip hop. The Brooklynite is one of the most talented young rappers from the new-age and is one of the key figures that helped spark the drill scene in New York.

  • Wu-Tang Clan To Headline SiriusXM and Pandora’s Hip Hop 50 Celebration in Queens

    Legendary hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan has announced they are headlining “For the Love,” a collaboration between SiriusXM and Pandora that celebrates Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary.

    “For The Love” includes an unforgettable day of events on Aug. 10 in Queens at the Knockdown Center, by the Wu-Tang Clan, considered by many to be the greatest hip-hop group of all time. Founded in Staten Island in the early 1990s, the group is comprised of members RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna, and the deceased Ol Dirty Bastard (ODB).

    They have been touring as a unit since their debut record Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) came out in 1993. The now triple-platinum release vaulted the group with songs like “C.R.E.A.M.” (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) and “Protect Ya Neck.” Their live sets are a family affair, with every member of the crew representing their lyrical contributions to their eight studio albums, as well as notable cuts from the Wu-Tang solo discography. Every Wu-Tang Clan show is a celebration of prolific careers as individuals and especially as the most storied group in hip-hop history.

    Earlier in the day, For the Love: Community Giveback Sponsored by Cricket invites fans to the Knockdown Center to celebrate hip-hop’s next 50 years with local students, families, and businesses in support of the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Queens. Throughout the afternoon, the event will feature a wide range of festivities from breakdancing performances and double-dutch to live, interactive broadcasts of SiriusXM Hip-Hop Nation’s Gray Rizzy and The Heat’s DJ Steel. SiriusXM personalities Mina SayWhat, Torae, Coach PR, D-Stroy, Bugsy, DJ Superstar Jay, DJ Wallah, and DJ Taj will also be on hand during the event to host, DJ, and more. Food will be provided by a host of local, BIPOC-owned and operated food trucks.

    Hip-hop is not just music, it’s a culture which has defined and redefined our society through the years.   • Brooklyn’s Paramount Theatre To Be Renovated with Live Nation Partnership

    Long Island University’s (LIU) long-running restoration of the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre is expected to be completed in the first or second quarter of 2024. This will be accomplished with the aid of Live Nation, which currently has a 25-year operating lease for the building.

    Plans originally began in 2015 with Onexim, a company owned by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, but progress halted as Onexim looked for new investors to take over operations. This, combined with the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly offset any chance of an as-planned 2019 reopening.

    In a recent meeting in June 2023 with Brooklyn’s Community Board 2’s Health, Environment & Social Services Committee, progress was shown by Live Nation representatives, though the page on LIU’s website has yet to be updated. It will be opening as the LIU Brooklyn Paramount Theatre.

    The Paramount Theatre originally operated from 1928 to 1962 as a live performance venue and was also the first theater designed to show talking movies. It helped introduce Jazz to Brooklyn and was an early home to Rock. The Theatre had performances by iconic musicians, such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Bing Crosby, Buddy Holly, and Chuck Berry.

    In 1962, the Paramount Theatre closed its doors. LIU would go on to turn the location into a gym, though it retained the original Rococo-style ceiling and other decorative details. The gym at what once was the Paramount would be replaced, and plans for the restoration would be made.     The theatre is still home to one of two working models of the Wurlitzer 4/26 orchestral organ, the other at home in Radio City. The 1928 instrument is the only one that is still 100% original, and it is maintained by the New York Theatre Organ Society (NYTOS). It is capable of replicating the sound of a full symphony orchestra through a single, very intricate instrument.

Their music served as the perfect opener, drawing people in and setting the tone for a night of unforgettable performances.

    Next up was the legendary band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Known for their fusion of rock, blues, and soul, the band wasted no time in getting the audience on their feet. Kim Wilson’s dynamic presence and the band’s energy proved why they have been a crowd favorite for decades. With classic hits like “Tuff Enough” and “Rock With Me,” The Fabulous Thunderbirds delighted old fans and won over new ones, turning the festival grounds into one giant dance floor.

    As the night progressed, the stage was graced by the presence of the iconic Dave Mason. The audience was taken on a nostalgic journey through Mason’s illustrious career, with hits from his time with Traffic and his successful solo career. His smooth vocals and masterful guitar work on “Can’t Find My Way Home” resonated through the crowd, creating a serene ambiance that had everyone swaying to the music. Dave Mason’s performance was a reminder of the timeless quality of great music and its ability to transcend generations.

    The climax of Day 1 was the highly anticipated performance of Hot Tuna, a band renowned for its fusion of blues, rock, and psychedelic sounds. Adding to the significance of the night, it was announced that this would be Electric Hot Tuna’s final performance on Long Island, making it an emotional and bittersweet moment for both the band and their loyal fans.

    Throughout the performance, fans were treated to a range of classics that showcased the band’s unparalleled talent and chemistry. Whether it was Jorma Kaukonen’s mesmerizing guitar prowess on “Hesitation Blues” or Jack Casady’s magnetic bass lines on “Trial by Fire,” each moment was a testament to the enduring legacy of Hot Tuna.

    As the final chords rang out, the audience erupted into thunderous applause, expressing their gratitude for the band’s many years of musical brilliance.
