Local Oneida teacher Heather O’Connell has been awarded the prestigious Music Teacher Award from the one and only Barry Manilow for her work as an excellent music teacher.

Heather O’Connell has won the Manilow Music Teacher Award for her work as a music teacher at Oneida High School along with $10,000, which consists of $5,000 cash and another $5,000 in “Manilow bucks” to purchase musical instruments for her school’s music program. The Manilow Music Project Teacher Award recognizes an “outstanding music teacher who helps bring music to life for their students,” stated Turning Stone. The Manilow Music Project has given away over 10 million dollars worth of funds and musical instrument donations.
“I am so humbled and so honored to have won this award to give me the opportunity to help so many students,” said O’Connell. “The $5,000 instrument money is going to my colleagues to purchase instruments for the students, and the other $5,000 is going directly back to the students at the high school. We have a beautiful community outreach program here in our school that I can help to feed and clothe and help kids in our community.”
O’Connell received several nominations from Turning Stone employees, who helped nominate deserving music teachers in the area. The Manilow Music Project then selected ten finalists, opening up voting online to name the winner. Turning Stone Bingo Supervisor Dezaire Collins was one of those employees who nominated O’Connell.
“Honestly, [Mrs. O’Connell] was the first person I thought of; she is truly an amazing teacher,” said Collins. “Now that I’m a parent and think back to the joy she brought to my life in music, and now she’s giving it to my kids as well. It’s quite amazing the impact she’s made in our district over these past 30 years.”

Barry Manilow performed on Aug. 19 at Turning Stone, where O’Connell received VIP tickets. Manilow also presented her with the award at a backstage ceremony during the concert.
“It is wonderful to partner with our concert venues to identify schools and music teachers in their neighborhoods that deserve this small token of my gratitude, said Manilow. “Many school music programs have either been terminated, or their funds have been severely depleted. I always want to do my part through The Manilow Music Project to keep music in schools.
Rock outfit Dogstar have announced that they will be stopping in Brooklyn as part of the tour for their upcoming album Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, the group’s first project in over 20 years. Dogstar is made up of Bret Domrose (guitar/vocals), Robert Mailhouse (drums), and notably, Keanu Reeves (bass). The band is set to perform at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on December 11.
Founded in Los Angeles during the 90s, the group started to formulate their alt-rock sound with garage jam sessions. In 1994 Dogstar would depart on an extensive tour and a year later the collective opened for David Bowie. The band released just two albums together, Our Little Visionary in 1996 and Happy Ending in 2000. Due to the members’ other professional and artistic commitments, the group grew apart, last performing in 2002. However, Dogstar returned this year with the single “Everything Turns Around” off their upcoming album.
We are so excited to re-introduce Dogstar with our new single ‘Everything Turns Around.’ It feels like a fun summer song to us.
In addition to “Everything Turns Around” the group recently released “Breach” off of Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees. Made for the summer, both of the albums’ singles channel the Southern California energy that the band has become synonymous with. Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees is slated to drop on October 6.

Excitement grew as I was able to snag an interview with Robin Wilson, the frontman for both the Gin Blossoms and now the Smithereens, on The Long Island Sound podcast. To be frank, this is my biggest celebrity interview to date and I was a bit nervous.
Sure, like any seasoned interviewer, I did my homework as the familuar Gin Blossoms’ repertoire came front and center to the cacophoney of songs rambling around this tattered brain of mine. “Allison Road,” “Follow You Down” and “Hey Jealousy” all bounced back into my mind as I researched Robin Wilson.
Still I was a bit concerned about going the interview alone, so I reached out to an old guest of the podcast, Peter Mancini, a fabulous singer/songwriter in his own right. With about thirty years between Peter and myself, I was captivated to see my co-host question one of his musical influences, and provide a true songwritters perspective on the podcast episode. During an earlier interview with Mancini, he mentioned the Gin Blossoms as one of bands he admired. Pete really stepped up with some great insights, and literally saved the session, when a camera glitch could have been an unfortunate hiccup for the flow of the conversation. Record Store Rendezvous
Prior to streaming service playlists, the teenage Rock-n-Roll faithful would peruse the local record store to quench their thirst for audio excelence. That’s exactly the nexis where the Gin Blossoms began.
…so pretty much all the musicians either hung out at Tower Records or worked there, and so I knew Bill Leen, the Gin Blossoms’ Bass player.

Robin brought us back to the path of his incorporation into the group and how generous bandmate would share the limelight and have him take the frontman position.
Being in the company of musicians, and surrounding yourself with great music from all genres cultivates a furtile field for aspiring musicians to find their path. The recipe of placing oneself in the company of music lovers seems to have helped Robin Wilson be in the right place at the right time. That’s one of the reasons why I love hosting The Long Island Sound podcast. Connecting with artists of all stripes has given me the opportunity to make connections, and root out inspiration, not only for music, but for my personal well-being.
From MTV to SNL Making Connections
Curious to understand how this Tempe, Arizona navtive came upon the shore of Long Island. Robin recalled meeting his ex-wife, Gena Rositano on Jon Stewart’s show on MTV in 1993.
And so all these all these years, you know, I’ve had an inside track to you know, the world of MTV and of Saturday Night Live. And that’s just through Gena.

The Gin Blossoms appeared on Stewart’s premiere show, along with a guest appearance by Howard Stern. Gena is a native of Valley Stream, and both Robin and Gena settled there. Jon Stewart later officiated Robin and Gena’s wedding and as they say, the rest is history. Gena later moved on to Saturday Night Live, where the Gin Blossoms appeard in March of 1996.
Chance Meetings
Wilson has built an amazing music career through timely connections, talent and perseverance. Whether it was working with Marshall Crenshaw and the Smithereens or working with fantastic producers like Don Dixon or John Hampton the Gin Blossoms were in the company of the very crew who produced, R.E.M., The Replacements, the White Stripes, and Jimmy Vaughn.
Lamenting the pending induction at The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, I pointed out the wellspring of talent Robin will join who all made their home on Long Island. From Billy Joel to Joan Jett and the likes of Harry Chapin, Jimmy Webb and Steve Vai. Robin will be playing at his induction on Friday, August 25th along side his son, Aubrey. He plans on playing some Gin Blossom and Smithereen tunes and will be joined by Graham Maby (Bassist for Joe Jackson) who also resides on Long Island. I’ve been continually amazed at the ability for artists, particularly singer/songwriters and their ability to create the songs that often become the soundtracks for our lives. Talent and hardwork don’t always pay immediate dividends, but for the lucky few who are skilled at making their own breaks, with purposeful networking; sometimes they get to snatch the brass ring for their chance to sing the words, we cannot find, and draw out sweet emotions from time to time.

Utica artist Nick Vanderwood dropped his latest single “Shimmy” accompanied by a music video on August 19. “Shimmy” ushers in the next phase of Vanderwood’s artistic journey, as the track signals the incoming release of his September EP Reload. The music video premiere and subsequent live performance headlined the opening ceremonies for the first annual Dreamland Theatre Music and Arts Festival.
The release of “Shimmy” marks the second audio-visual collaboration between Nick and Utica-born filmmaker, Lukas Sunderlin. The two friends joined forces years ago for Nick’s project “Little Vacation.” Since then, the duo have moved to Los Angeles and have been consolidating their creative visions under their new media production label known as “Monomaniac.”
Reload has been in the works for many years, as Vanderwood has struggled with a chronic neck injury that has hindered his performance behind a microphone. “Shimmy” started as a product of Vanderwood’s efforts at putting together a debut album. Recorded at the artists’ home in New York Mills, the track escalated from a brief demo to a full seven-minute cinematic short film.
The project not only attests to the creativity of Sunderlin but also the strength of “Shimmy” as a song. Funky, syrupy, and full of attitude, the track is a masterful blend of guitar and bass. The song perfectly fits the mysterious sci-fi world that comes alive in the video. Directed by Sunderlin with cinematography from Scott Sweitzer, the short film is fun and genuine. The duo cultivates an intriguing and imaginative visual experience that helps to showcase Vanderwood’s unique artistic vision.
We didn’t want to just throw something together and do something cute. The new work Nick is creating has an amazing amount of energy behind it, so we wanted to make this a truly cinematic experience that could represent it appropriately.

Boston Flowers has just released their latest single “Man On Mars” as well as an upbeat and colorful music video to go with it. The release comes just a month ahead of the band’s newest album Mondegreen, set to be released to audiences on Sept. 13.
Boston Flowers is made up of members Brad Flowers, who leads on vocals, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, and bass guitar, along with CJ Kostaras who keeps the music together on the drums. The Brooklyn-based musical group is known for their unique, seamless blend of indie, alternative, and pop-rock sounds. Drawing influences from a diverse range of musical styles, the duo has captivated audiences with their infectious lyrics and energetic performances, earning them critical acclaim along with the honor of being one of Brooklyn’s most exciting up-and-coming acts.
Their new single, “Man On Mars,” is a track of pure upbeat intoxication, encouraging listeners to treat every second of life with utmost value and to treat each day with a sense of community. The sound itself, with layered guitars, consistent drums, and strong vocals, exudes happy energy making it fit in perfectly with the alternative pop-rock community. The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall will unveil a brand new event, Kaleidescape: A Sonic Journey, on October 14. The event will feature over 15 artists and is set to be a musical experience unlike anything the venue has ever hosted before. The venue has commissioned seven artists to create an original piece of work that will debut at Kaleidescape.
Originally part of a historic bank, the Music Hall has become an artistic staple in Troy and the surrounding area. The Music Hall will serve as the central artistic inspiration for the new pieces of music . The mission of Kaleidescape is to celebrate the local musicians and fans who have helped to support Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.
Curated by Organ Colossal, Kaleidoscope will feature performances from Buggy Jive, Sara Ayers, Ohzhe, Zan and the Winter Folk, Sam Torres, and composer Patrick Burke. The event will also include multiple special guests like Julia Alsarraf and Girl Blue.
Kaleidescape will continue the venue’s mission of keeping music open and accessible. Colin Barkell and his band King Vaudeville are set to perform two concerts at the Little York Pavilion in Preble on Sept. 6 and 14. Todd Meredith and special guest Kyle Lacy are also scheduled to appear. The shows are part of Cortland Repertory Theatre’s (CRT) 51st summer of programming at the venue.
Since appearing at CRT in 2019, Colin Barkell has gone on to make his Broadway debut and form the group King Vaudeville. His performance will feature impassioned covers of classic Johnny Cash, Elvis, and Chuck Berry tunes. Barkell will also mix in some of his original music, which reflects his upbeat personality.
Todd Meredith is no stranger to CRT either, appearing in Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story back in 2013. The Albany artist also performed in Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash and Million Dollar Quartet. Meredith and guest guitarist Kyle Lacy will perform an acoustic mix of classic and contemporary pop songs. With both musicians being prolific songwriters, the show will also include some of their own work.

Dr. James Palmer, associate director of theatre at SUNY Cortland, opened the Cortland Repertory Theatre in 1972. Since then, the organization has only grown, expanding to downtown in 2010. Past CRT performers and volunteers include Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter, Tony-winning director Joe Mantello, and renowned actor Stephen Borgardis.

The Brooklyn-based group salamander has made galant strides forward in their musical journey as they have recently released a new single, “xylem,” on top of announcing their debut LP. The LP titled, [container], is an eleven track project set to be released later this Fall on Oct. 18.
salamander is dynamic trio, originally formed by songwriters PJ Hunter and Leo Frampton in 2019, adding in drummer Ben Verde two years later. The band takes improvisation and raw emotion to form an interesting-sonic sound that struggles to be placed in the confines of any genre. In a similar style, their songwriting process is fluid and highly collaborative, with many arrangements, structured ideas, and lyrics coming from multiple members of the band. While some songs, such as “wildfire” and “xylem,” have lyrics and chords written mostly by one of the band members, other songs such as “ride” and “wave” were written in full collaboration.
“xylem” is the second track the band has released from [container] following their previously dropped track “ride.” The new song has a hypnotic and distilled pop beat and melody that blends into the moody vocals of the group. The lyrics themselves, coming mostly from band member Frampton, express haunting ideas surrounding the inevitability of death and trying to grapple and make peace with them saying, “I love this place, I want to be somewhere else/I love this place/We are going somewhere else.”
“This song sprouted from the way I have made peace with this fear, trying to see my own life and generation as part of a cycle bigger and smaller than myself,” Frampton explains. “I wrote the lyrics during springtime, which is the essence of the chords as well. I like the idea that people can interpret ‘place’ differently, zoomed in or out as far as they like.”
The writing process of “xylem” was completely unique with melodies being created by Frampton and Hunter, guitar tones and a resonating mood being brought by Cody Zusman, and production being put together by Carlos Hernandez, among various other hands and voices in the mix. The new song comes with an artistic video visualizer created by Linnea Nugent.

After a scary health scare, pop superstar Madonna had to postpone her upcoming The Celebration Tour. However, she just announced that most of her North American dates have been rescheduled for the end and beginning of the year, including her MSG and Barclays Center dates.
Her originally scheduled performance at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 27 had to, unfortunately, be canceled, however, to make up for it, an additional date at the Barclays Center was added on Dec. 16. Beginning Aug. 29, ticket holders for the previously scheduled Aug. 27 show at MSG will be able to purchase tickets for the new Dec. 16 show ahead of the public sale for those remaining tickets on Sept. 1. Those who purchased tickets to the canceled date will be refunded, and Ticketmaster will then provide all affected fans with a dedicated link and a unique code based on the quality of their previous seat locations to purchase tickets to the new date.
The original tour dates were postponed following Madonnaâs hospitalization in June for a serious bacterial infection. She has since made a remarkable recovery.
