  • Hearing Aide: Tennis Courts’ Electrifying Anthem “Jamie’s Party”

    Tennis Courts, a Brooklyn-based alternative rock band, has released their new single “Jamie’s Party,” an electrifying anthem which is the second single off of their upcoming debut record. Calling back to the “power pop” bands of the ’70s, “Jamie’s Party” creates a new anthem for summer. The release of the single coincides with the band’s summer tour.

    Originally founded by the singer-songwriter duo Patrick Walsh and Andrew Clarke in 2019, Tennis Courts first made itself known in the basements and bars of Charleston, SC. In 2021, they relocated to Brooklyn where they were joined by guitarist Brian McKenna and bassist Spencer Brigman.

    Keeping the noise and energy from their dive-bar days, their upcoming debut album “explore[s] the dread and confusion of navigating life in your 20s.” Beyond the main band members, the song features Matteo DeBenedetti and Luke Ivanovich for background vocals, Erik Kase Romero for bass, and Max Connery for organ. The track was produced by Erik Kase Romero in Oakhurst, NJ.

    After the dark and heavy first single “Am I Not Talking Enough” we wanted to follow up with something sonically a little lighter, but still thematically similar lyrically. We wanted to write a song that people could sing along to. We wanted something that felt like your favorite coming of age movie. It’s really just me thinking about my younger self and what I might say to them.

    If making “a song that people could sing along to” was the goal, Tennis Courts certainly succeeded. “Jamie’s Party” is a song for driving down the interstate with the windows down and for the crowded bar, with a combination of bombastic instrumentals, loud lyrics and a strong chorus.

    Walsh has claimed influence by ’70s bands such as Big Star and The Cars, and that effect is clear to see, though it still has some audio charms of the 2020s. Even the name “Jamie’s Party” evokes songs like “Jesse’s Girl” and “Stacy’s Mom,” cementing it as a song between generations, though whether this was intentional is unclear.

    The song’s opening slowly builds until the guitars burst in to give it an exciting start. There are various moments like this throughout the piece where the instruments get a moment to bust down the doors after vocals. It gives each line an explosive conclusion that suits the song very well.

    A personal favorite moment occurs around 2:55 with a guitar solo that feels straight out of ’70s classic rock. It precedes the conclusion of the song, and is an excellent send off on the instrumental side of things.

    For a song released so close the beginning of summer, “Jamie’s Party” deserves to be the sound of summer. It is an almost nostalgic song that takes from the past without copying it, and still has room to add its own to the rock genre.

    Merci Van – “Oppenheimer”

    Merci Van is from Saratoga Springs and makes synth post-folk music. Members are Alicia Macier Van Scoy, Ed Cormac, and Katlyn Celentano. Their new single “Irrational Anthems” is out now.

    Caity Gallagher – “Worth Remembering”

    Caity Gallagher is a rootsy singer/songwriter based in Albany, who uses lifting vocals and empowering lyrics to tell universally relatable stories. She started playing piano at age seven and guitar at sixteen, and has been compared to the likes of Jackson Browne and Carole King. Her newest EP Something Worth Remembering is out now on streaming platforms, with the song “Worth Remembering” having a spot on Sunday’s EQXposure.

    Kirsti Blow – “Last Cigarette”

    Kirsti Blow is a singer/songwriter hailing from Upstate New York, recognized for her soft voice and unforgettable instrumentals. Her new album Loose Ends, written over the course of two years, explores the feelings of of elation and fear, love and disillusionment, and the changing seasons while traveling in the US and Spain. “Last Cigarette” will hold a spot on EQXposure this Sunday.

  • Fleet Foxes Come To Shore At College Street Music Hall

    Continuing to tour in support of their fourth consecutive critically acclaimed album Shore (Anti-Records, 2020), Fleet Foxes visited College Street Music Hall (CSMH) in New Haven, Connecticut this past Tuesday night for the fifth show on a 28-date trek of North America that kicked-off in Chesterfield, Missouri a few days prior.

    Formed in 2006, the indie folk darlings hailing from Seattle, Washington are the quintet of frontman/guitarist Robin Pecknold, Skyler Skjelset (guitar), Casey Wescott (keyboards, mandolin, backing vocals), Christian Wargo (bass) and Morgan Henderson (multi-instrumentalist, including upright bass and saxophone). Since last year, Fleet Foxes have also been joined by touring drummer Christopher Icasiano.

    Despite the distance from their home on the west coast, the Pacific Northwesterners – particularly Pecknold – share a strong connection to New York State. To make a long story short (too late!), the recording of Shore got underway at Aaron Dessner’s (The National) Long Pond Studios in Hudson, New York back in September 2019. Although the majority of Shore was subsequently recorded at Woody Jackson’s Electro-Vox Studio in Los Angeles, California from late-2019 to early-2020, progress was halted in March 2020 – due to what else – COVID-19 of course. With Shore conceptually complete from a music standpoint, Pecknold was not satisfied with his writings and was struggling to find the right words to match the music. However, it would not be for too long, as he eventually found the lyrical inspiration he craved during time spent on long drives from his Greenwich Village apartment, where he had been quarantined, to Lake Minnewaska in Ulster County, and further north into the Catskill Mountains.

    A few ticks past 7:00 pm, doors to the historic venue constructed in 1926 and located in the heart of New Haven’s downtown arts district opened to the loyal Fleet Fox fans that had been queued a half block south of Yale University, many since the early afternoon.  As throngs of patrons hurriedly began to file into the concert hall’s lobby, many headed straight for the merch table to purchase a t-shirt, hoodie or signed tour poster. Others were seen grabbing a craft beer on tap or a cocktail before securing a spot on the General Admission floor or heading to the upper balcony.

    Fittingly opening the show at 8:00 pm, as it’s her voice you hear opening “Wading in Waist-High Water” on Fleet Foxes’ Shore, was Uwade Akhere. A Nigerian born singer-songwriter based in New York City, Uwade is an indie-folk artist whose star has been on the rise since the release of her very first single, “Nostalgia,” in 2019. Performing a 30-minute solo set, she favored stage right as she played a six-string Torino Green Gretsch that nearly matched her dress perfectly. With an angelic onstage presence – her songs are fittingly spiritual in nature as well – she relinquished sublime versions of her only other singles released to date, “The Man Who Sees Tomorrow” (2021) and “Do You See the Light Around Me?” (2022). As the venue was nearing its 2,000-capacity, Uwade played “One Way Trigger,” a cover that her fellow New York City natives The Strokes released in 2013. With Uwade’s set nearing its conclusion, and much to the delight of Fleet Foxes fans, she welcomed to the stage Wargo and Icasiano for her two final songs.

    After a brief intermission to address the stage’s final preparations, Fleet Fox took the stage a few ticks past 9:00 pm to raucous applause from the now packed house. With Pecknold snapping a few shots of the adoring fans in front of him with a disposable camera, he announced immediately, “Thank you so much New Haven, thank you. And thank you so much to Uwade, that was an incredible opening set.” The night’s festivities officially got underway with “Sun Giant,” a soft, harmonic piece written in 2008 that began a cappella, before fading into full accompaniment, including a two-man horn section. Reprising her role from Shore, Uwade reappeared onstage to contribute backing vocals to “Wading in Waist-High Water.” It would not be the 22-year old’s last appearance of the evening, as she would later join the band during the encore for exquisite backing deliveries of “For a Week or Two” and “Going-to-the-Sun Road.”

    For the entirety of the massive, 24-song set that encompassed Fleet Foxes’ rich and diverse catalog over the past 17 years, the Seattle musicians were in top form across the board, in particular, Pecknold’s unique baritenor voice. Hailed for their refined instrumentation and vocal harmonies, their music was meant to be executed in a place such as CSMH – the destination for concertgoers looking for a venue within spitting distance of Boston and Manhattan – renowned for its world-class acoustics and lighting.

    Because Fleet Foxes’ two hour plus gig was filled with stand-out moments, picking the top song highlights is not easy. However, if I could choose only three, they would have to be (in order by appearance): Pecknold’s solo acoustic performance of “Silver Dagger” (a traditional American folk ballad popularized by Joan Baez); “Blue Ridge Mountains,” my favorite Fleet Foxes tune taken from their self-titled debut studio album (2008); and the impressive show’s finale, “Helplessness Blues,” the title track from their sophomore studio album (2011).

    In the coming days and weeks, the North American leg of Fleet Foxes’ Shore Tour 2023 will sweep through Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, the Carolinas, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Minnesota, Indiana and Maine. And in case you missed the CSMH show, or you just cannot get enough of Fleet Foxes in a live setting, they will be playing Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards in LaFayette, New York on July 12. The tour finale is slated to occur near Fleet Foxes’ old stomping grounds, at Thing Fest in Port Townsend, Washington, on August 25. To date, the only additional public appearance on the calendar for Fleet Foxes is the Festival Corona Capital in Mexico City on November 17.

  • Karina Rykman Announces Fall Tour Stopping in Brooklyn & Saratoga Springs

    Singer-songwriter-bassist Karina Rykman announced her first headlining tour this fall, ahead of the release of her debut album. “Joyride Tour 2023” begins Sept. 20 at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn, then travels the US through mid-December.

    “Joyride Tour 2023” celebrates the upcoming arrival of Rykman’s hugely anticipated debut album, JOYRIDE, arriving via AWAL on Friday, Aug. 18. While the tour kicks off in Brooklyn, Rykman will also stop in Saratoga Springs at Putnam Place on Nov. 30.

    The album was first heralded with the premiere of the first single and title track, “Joyride.” Equal parts thick bass, ethereal synths, disco-funk guitar, and silky, inviting vocals, the track – which features signature lead guitar from JOYRIDE co-producer Trey Anastasio – expertly captures Rykman’s jubilant brand of sonic exploration, bridging an array of genres to arrive at her own compelling and original take on psychedelic indie rock.

    Born and raised in New York City, Karina Rykman’s musical path began in her early teens playing in bands whenever she could while attending a veritable ton of live music as a fan. Her prowess on the bass guitar soon landed her several high-profile television gigs spanning America’s Got Talent to backing up pop star Julia Michaels on TODAY. By the end of her senior year at NYU, Rykman’s talent and infectious spirit saw her invited to join pianist Marco Benevento’s band, with whom she performed countless shows including dates with Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and many more.

    Rykman soon formed her namesake band, accompanied by Adam November (guitar, loopers, effects) and Chris Corsico (drums). She quickly earned a reputation as a mesmerizing, unmissable live act, lighting up an array of international stages with headline sets, show-stealing festival performances (including Bonnaroo, Peach Music Festival, and Sweetwater 420 Fest), shows alongside Khruangbin, Guster, and The Disco Biscuits (among others), and recent appearances sitting in with the 8G Band on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers.

    Along with headlining her tour, Rykman will also perform at festivals this summer, including the Borderland Music Festival in East Aurora. More information about tickets can be found here.

  • Re:SET Forest Hills Day 3: Steve Lacy Gave the World to his Fans and their Fathers

    The Re:SET Concert Series closed its New York run at Forest Hills Stadium this past Sunday, June 18th. The brand-new summer festival welcomed LCD Soundsystem and Boygenius on Days 1 and 2, respectively, and will continue to travel to many major cities across the US. Featuring alternative R&B artists like Fousheé, Toro y Moi, James Blake, and Grammy-winner Steve Lacy, Day 3 of Re:SET was not a show to miss. While some people celebrated their Father’s Day at home, at restaurants, or with family, others attended Sunday’s concert (with their dads) for a day full of dancing, singing, and an overall great time.

    Thousands of eager fans lined up hours before doors to secure their spots at the front of the barricade, clearly ready to see their favorite artists. Bright colors flooded the entire venue, as concertgoers interwove the rainbow into their carefully-picked outfits, glittery makeup, and fun hair accessories. Fousheé successfully opened the show with unparalleled energy, exciting her crowd of almost 13,000. Her unique voice goes both ways—sweet and angry. During her performance of “stupid bitch,” she asked the crowd to repeat the lyrics, “I’ll blow your brains out, you stupid bitch” at the start of the song. Screaming into the mic and hitting impressive whistle notes during her other tracks truly wowed her audience—who gave her a well-deserving round of screams and applause at the end of her set.

    Next up was Toro y Moi, wearing a bright orange jacket, blue shades, and lime-green nails. His chill, lofi set included songs like “Rose Quartz,” “Laws of the Universe,” and “Magazine.” Perfectly matching his vibe was a montage of cat videos on the large stage screen. Concertgoers were seen dancing, swaying, and twirling to his fresh beats on the tennis court floor and even in the seated sections of the venue.

    Toro y Moi is the definition of cool, as he scaled the stage with his swift, nimble movements. Knowing exactly how to keep his crowd engaged, he pointed to the audience members and encouraged them to move their hands up and down in sync. During his and Lacy’s set, Fousheé was even spotted in the general admission section dancing and spinning to the music.

    The last opener of the evening was James Blake, who upon entering was greeted with a large roar of applause. The 34-year-old musician from England blew up on TikTok in 2020 for his Frank Ocean cover of “Godspeed.” During his somber and deeply emotional rendition of this song, fans watched in complete awe—certainly mesmerized by his warm vocals and buttery vibratos.

    During one particular song, he realized his keyboard was out of tune. While a stagehand replaced his keyboard, James continued on to his next scheduled song on a different instrument. Although his solo vocals are beautiful to listen to with eyes closed, James Blake is also an extremely talented electronic and experimental artist. He blended a variety of different elements into his performances of tracks, “CMYK,” “Hummingbird,” and “Say What You Will.”

    The energy before Steve Lacy’s entrance was unmatched. Fans in the seated sections stood on their tippy-toes while those on the floor squished up against one another to get as close to the stage as possible. The buzz of excitement could be felt by anyone, as fans waited eagerly in anticipation for him to come out. A plume of smoke. Deafening screams. A flashing of lights. Another uproar. And finally, his entrance to the stage, wearing his iconic cyberpunk glasses—this time in navy blue. Fans jumped up and down, unable to contain their excitement.

    Steve Lacy opened his set with iconic songs like “Buttons,” “Cody Freestyle,” and “Helmet”—all of which are from his latest album Gemini Rights. He vibed to the music, moving his body to the beat as his band and backup singers accompanied him. During “Amber,” he told the crowd to take out their phone flashlights, leading to a beautiful and dreamlike scene as thousands of lights flooded the venue. Lacy is a very talented guitarist, and during many of his tracks, he performed his own guitar solos for the crowd to watch in amazement.

    The alternative R&B artist brought out Fousheé during the performance of their song “Sunshine.” The two blended incredibly together on stage, and the crowd reacted accordingly. Before singing his hit songs, “Static,” “Bad Habit,” and “Dark Red,” Lacy said, “Pride month is almost over. It’s time to come out. Look to your neighbor, say, ‘Neighbor, you gay.’” The bisexual artist is proud of his sexuality and serves as a role model for many members of the LGBTQ+ community.

    Steve Lacy put his all into Sunday’s performance. Fans sporting his iconic glasses waved and screamed as he made his bittersweet goodbyes. Finishing the night on a glorious note with his performance of “Dark Red,” fans were clearly satisfied by the show’s end.

  • Cobblestone Live Announces P.U.N.T. Pediatric Cancer Collaborative as Primary Beneficiary

    The Cobblestone Live Music & Arts Festival has announced their partnership with the Buffalo-based nonprofit organization P.U.N.T. Pediatric Cancer Collaborative as the primary beneficiary of the event. The festival will be on July 14 and 15 in downtown Buffalo.

    P.U.N.T. provides financial, practical, and emotional support to families in Western New York facing pediatric cancer, and also collaborates with hospital partners to ensure that money raised is brought to where it is most needed. The organization was originally founded in 2004 by former Buffalo Bills punter Brian Moorman and his wife Amber. The acronym itself stands for Perseverance, Understanding, Need and Teamwork.

    With support from the Western New York community, P.U.N.T.’s scope and impact has grown significantly over the past several years. A portion of the proceeds from the Cobblestone Live festival will now help support the organization and its initiatives.

    As a grassroots nonprofit with a critical mission for Western New York families facing the incomprehensible plight of pediatric cancer, we are honored to be the charitable partner of Cobblestone Live Music & Arts Festival…. [the Cobblestone Live team] will undoubtedly make this two-day festival a highlight of our Buffalo summer and an unforgettable event experience. The fact that it also will lift our cause in the process makes us exceedingly proud and grateful.

    Cobblestone Live is now in its fifth year, organized by Twenty6 Productions and Buffalo Iron Works. On top of their collaboration announcement with P.U.N.T., Cobblestone Live has announced its detailed list of over 50 food and craft vendors that will be present at the event.

    In addition, they have made several ADA improvements sponsored by the braille fashion company Aille Design. CEO Alexa Jovanovic and Director of Operations Jake Walsh of Aille Design will work with local members of the disability community to make the festival a more accessible experience. More details on the accessibility plan have not yet been announced.

  • In Focus: Mihali at Alive at 5

    The theme for the second installment of Albany’s Alive at 5 was Jam Night. On Thursday, June 15th, Mihali along with Side B played 2 non-stop jam sessions for the people of Albany.

    Mihali is one of the co-founders of the jam band Twiddle. Out of Vermont, Mihali has been with Twiddle for the last 18 years. Late last year Twiddle, made the announcement that they were taking an “indefinite hiatus” following their Distance Makes the Heart tour.

    Mihali plans to join the band for a few of their shows, but really started to branch off from the band. He has his own shows that he’s doing along with the Twiddle tour. He also released a single, “Raise it,” last month along with his second solo album Effection last summer.

    Side B from Albany played a solid hour set to open Jam Night. They are no stranger to Albany stages as they played a set during the Holiday Tree Lighting. The young alt-rock band played an electric and energetic set for their first Alive at 5. Guitarist A.J. Horton ran in to the crowd to get them on their feet. They really started to turn heads as they grew a bit on an audience towards the end of their set, especially with a cover of Presidents of the United States of America’s “Peaches.”

    Mihali played an almost non-stop one and a half hour set to a large crowd of Albany residents. The band really worked together well to take few breaks between songs and just really jam out. The saxophonist had a large presence on stage as they had many breakout solos alongside some of the other band members.

    There was not one bad vibe to be found as Mihali played a mixture of covers, old, and new music. Parents with their children might have had stories to tell about some of their favorite Twiddle songs from high school.

    As Mihali was leaving the stage, there was a reluctance from the crowd to just go home. No chants for an encore erupted, but instead a long applause. Nonetheless, Mihali came back saying that they still have 5 more minutes left of their set. He started of with the smooth a reggae beat from “Enemies” before switching to a more hard rock beat. It really felt that every strum of the guitar struck a cord on your inside.

  • Re:SET Forest Hills Day 1: LCD Soundsystem Bring The Funk To The Tennis Courts

    Re:SET Concert Series kicked off its three day run at Forest Hill Tennis Stadium this past Friday, June 16th. The traveling mini festival is in their inaugural year, taking a stacked lineup on the road and commandeering local venues for a long weekend of music. The opening night of Re:SET Queens featured legendary NYC natives LCD Soundsystem supported by Jamie XX, IDLES, and fellow New Yorker L’Rain. Each band brings a distinct style of the music to the stage, creating a truly unique night of music you can’t get at a normal concert.

    The atmosphere was electric from the beginning. General admission floor wristbands were given out on a first come first served basis, drawing a large crowd for the early start time. A brief thunderstorm pushed doors back an hour, but those first fans in the door were greeted to the amazing L’Rain welcoming them from the stage. Her uniquely experimental pop and R&B filled the stadium with dense layers of vocal loops and instrumentation. L’Rain finds herself on many bills throughout the city opening for all sorts of artists, keeping it fresh by bringing something new every time.

    IDLES were up next, who brought a drastic shift in energy with their classic, in-your-face punk rock. The band boasts an extremely loyal and engaged fan base that made it out to Forest Hills in droves. IDLES have been pretty active since their excellent 2017 debut Brutalism, releasing four LPs in that time span and embarking on countless tours. Over the course of their one hour set, IDLES hit each of their four LPs including crowd favorites “Crawl!” from 2021’s CRAWLER and “Never Fight a Man With a Perm” from their sophomore LP Joy as an Act of Resistance.

    The band loves to be engaged with the crowd, crowd surfing while singing and even jumping into the mosh pit and playing guitar while mixing it up with the kids. Before closing the set with “Rottweiler”, vocalist Joe Talbot thanked the fans for coming out, saying “the only reason we exist as a band is because of the love and passion you bring to the shows, so thank you.”

    After the punk infused mosh pits cleared off the tennis courts, UK garage and house infusion was up next courtesy of Jamie XX. One half of The XX, Jamie XX blends the classic garage sound with old school house and rhythm and blues beats to create a unique style of dance music. Parked in front of a giant disco ball projecting rays onto the crowd, Jamie XX played a rather deep setlist littered with snippets of some of his bigger hits hidden in the layers. He opened the set with “KILL DEM”, a one-off single from 2022 that features a vibrant, glitchy vocal array over a very tribal garage beat. Jamie XX followed that up with “Idontknow”, another single that mixes scattered percussions with trippy vocal loops.

    Jamie XX took a 5-song setlist and fleshed it out for his hour-long set by mixing his songs in and out of curious beats and musical tangents, without skipping a beat or allowing a second of dead space. He rolled on with the fun and vibrant duo of “I’ll Take Care of You” followed by “LET’S DO IT AGAIN” before ending things off with a funky edit of “Gosh”, the opening track from his stellar 2015 LP In Colour. The audience on the floor and in the stadium seats were dancing from the moment he took the stage

    LCD Soundsystem always draw quite a bit of hype when they are in town, regardless of the countless residencies they perform in the city. A staple in the city’s thriving music scene since their inception in 2002, the band is beloved in New York and can bring a tiny dive bar or an entire arena to its knees with their infectious dance rock. Forest Hills Stadium was packed to the upper deck before the band took the stage to an enormous reception on a gorgeous night in Queens.

    James Murphy and company started things off with a bang with the driving drum beats of “Get Innocuous!”, the opening track from 2007’s Sound of Silver. The beat sent the audience into a dance groove that did not let up until curfew. The song continued to swell until a sudden transition to “I Can Change” instigated a loud sing along from the 13,000 fans in attendance. The set rolled along with endless crowd favorites, leading up to a climactic three song finale. “New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down” always comes with a vocal outburst from the crowd, which was followed up by the thunderous jam “Dance Yrself Clean”. The band fleshed this song out a bit for the live show, sending an already amped crowd up into another gear. All good things must come to an end, with LCD Soundsystem ending the night with “All My Friends”. A truly joyous ending to day one Re:SET.

    Re:SET has certainly established itself as one of the more unique traveling festivals in only its first year. Each day features a bill of four bands that could all headline shows on their own; many who just completed or are in the middle of their own tours. Each band brings something new to the stage when it’s their turn to play, drawing the interest of the fans who came out, and the other bands themselves. During the earlier acts for Re:SET, James Murphy and others from LCD Soundsystem were in VIP checking out the music, rocking along to IDLES and dancing to Jamie XX. During the headline set, many of the band members from the earlier acts made their way into the crowd to witness the legends themselves. It’s truly a great festival for fans who enjoy a wide array of music.

    Night two on Saturday featured headliners Boygenius along with Clairo, Dijon, and Bartees Strange. The final day was on Sunday, with a stellar performance by Steve Lacy supported by James Blake, Toro y Moi, and Fousheé.   • Marina Laurendi Releases Groovy Single With Deeper Meaning, “Silver Lining”

    Marina Laurendi, recognized as a “sad girl on the rise,” returns with a series of rock-centric singles, starting with her latest, “Silver Lining.” The Buffalo-based singer released the single following the success of her debut EP and music video, “Stay Mine.” The indie rock songstress further solidifies her hold as “one to watch” in the alt. world with this dancey, evocative up-tempo.

    Buffalo born and bred, Marina Laurendi is an indie pop/rock singer-songwriter. Her sound fuses storytelling, alternative elements, and bursts of cinematic pop. Through this, she evokes a sense of wanderlust, nostalgia, and dreamy idealism. With poetic verses, infectious hooks, and haunting vocals, Marina throws a refreshing twist on old school Alt.

    “Silver Lining” grooves with nostalgia, featuring reverberating guitars and subtly nuanced vocals, oozing texture and allure. The elements blend together seamlessly to create the perfect soundtrack for road trip radio jamming, or a sunny day stroll.

    Despite the song’s happy melody and dance-worthy beat, but carries a raw, honest message about change. Laurendi says that the song is about going through life-changing events that alter who you are as a person. Written during her father’s terminal battle with cancer, the song depicts being unable to keep up with appearances in the midst of grief and loss.

    The music contrasts with the lyrics, with a nostalgic vibe of a 1950’s bandstand—vintage vocals, layered instruments, and a melancholic slide guitar. The song details a romantic relaitonship where one party can always see the silver lining, but the other is in a different place entirely, struggling to feel seen.

    Laurendi says of the song, “I think it’s so relatable because at some point we all suffer a loss that alters us, at least for a little while. When you’re in a different place emotionally than yout friends or even your partner, you can drift apart. Sometimes people can’t fathom what you’re going through unless they’ve lived it.” The feeling of being unseen and misunderstood is simply and eloquently summed up in the lines, “You want to paste a smile on my face and act like I’m alright…I can’t dance the way I used to anymore.”

    For this single and her upcoming sophomore EP, Laurendi dove headfirst into the alternative rock pocket, lovingly nicknaming her particular genre as “Bitch Rock.” She says, “It’s about embracing all the emotions women are taught not to show – rage, desire, ugliness, all of it. We’re people not flowers,” she laughed. If you’re a fan of the honest songwriting style of Samia, the gritty textures of Angel Olsen, and the effortlessly nostalgic quality of Alvvays and Best Coast, “Silver Lining” is sure to top your summer sad girl playlist.

    Marina grew up as a theatre performer and moved to NYC shortly after college to perform Off-Broadway and around the East Coast. She recently performed at The Bitter End (NYC), Buffalo Ironworks, Rec Room, and Nietzsche’s, Whirlybird Music & Arts Festival (Jamestown, NY), and Buffalo’s 20th Annual Music is Art Festival. Her music has been featured on Thunder 102 in Sullivan County, WBFO The Bridge, Broadway World, NYS Music, and more. In 2022, she was a quarter finalist in a national competition to open at the Hollywood Bowl. Her debut EP “Stay Mine” and title track music video are out now on all platforms.   • 4 Years Later and Young The Giant Returns to Buffalo

    Alternative indie band Young The Giant performed in both rain and shine at Artpark on June 13. The group has been off the road for the past four years and finally decided to come back to tour life this Summer.

    Indie artist Talk kicked off the rainy night in Lewiston and had people crowded around to hear his hit “Run Away to Mars.” German rock duo Milky Chance followed up their set just as skies began to clear. Starting as high school friends, Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch have been making music together for years. They create this infectious energy on stage by constantly moving and switching instruments. They are able to liven up a crowd effortlessly as shown when they performed “Stolen Dance.”

    Later on in the evening Young the Giant took the stage. The band consists of Sameer Gadhia, Jacob Tilley, Eric Cannata, Payam Doostzadeh, and Francois Comtois. The group finally got to play tracks off of their 2022 album American Bollywood live for the first time. An album that explores the preservation of cultural identity while simultaneously assimilating to a new country.

    Frontman Sameer utilizes dreamlike lighting matched with cinematic visuals to take the audience through the journey of the human experience. Throughout their set the band would take a break to show optimistic and storytelling displays. This made the Young The Giant show feel like a journey the audience got to endure.

    With five studio albums under their belt Young The Giant has plenty of music in the discography to perform. However, they don’t shy away from playing their oldies such as “Cough Syrup” and “Mind Over Matter.” One song in particular that really wooed the crowd was their closing performance of “My Body.” This age-old hit has broken records for a reason because people have no choice but to dance. This was no exception either at that night in Buffalo.
