Sublime With Rome was formed in 2010 by original Sublime members, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, with the help of vocalist Rome Ramirez. The group strives to forge their own path while also honoring the origin of their name. The Aquadolls are another group working hard to forge their own path, by releasing hard hitting singles like ‘Cry Baby’ and ‘Disappearing Girl’. • Interview: Nick Reese discusses upcoming debut album from Joyous Wolf

“We hold a crazy standard. If every song doesn’t break a benchmark of something we’ve already done, then it’s not there yet. It’s not right.”  This is how Nick Reese, lead singer for Joyous Wolf, describes the work ethic behind the writing and recording of the band’s debut full length album due out this year.

Signed to Roadrunner Records in 2018, the Southern California based band quickly put out an EP “Place in Time,” releasing it in early 2019. From the EP came the single “Mother Rebel.” The song made its way to rock stations across the U.S, including SIRIUSXM’s Octane. “That kind of lifted us to where we could be,” Nick shared.  “If that didn’t even happen, I don’t know if we would have had this record the way it is.”

    Joyous Wolf

Fueled by the momentum from “Mother Rebel,” Joyous Wolf hit the road performing at festivals and booking multiple dates/tours opening for Slash, Buckcherry, and Deep Purple. Then Covid hit. Like many bands, their progression stopped in its tracks.

“The pandemic happened, and a lot happened during the pandemic. It almost tore us to shreds. As it did to a lot of people.” Reese shares. The band reconvened in July of 2020 to assess the health of the foursome and determine their next steps. “We had a lot of time to think about what kind of band we wanted to be, what we wanted to do, what we wanted to say.”

Looking back at the recording of their EP, Nick identifies it as “primordial” with most of the songs written in two weeks. However, for the new album a different approach was taken. “When it came time to writing and recording it was about taking time. Everything now is about time. “

“I think we got the gears turning again. We started this kind of going through all the things we had been kicking around up until that point. We probably went through a hundred audio files on phones and whatever, checking things out saying ‘Oh that’s cool, that ten seconds of that thirty-minute thing was cool, stuff like that’, We got a couple of things from that.”

Nick Reese of Joyous Wolf, describes the work ethic behind the writing and recording of the band’s debut full length album
    Nick Reese, Joyous Wolf

“We went out to Joshua Tree. We wrote out there. A couple of songs were yielded from that. We kept chipping away at things. Some songs we re-wrote the entire song except for this thirty seconds that we liked. Re-writing 5, 6, 10 or more times. We took that whole year for writing. We finished recording in around May (2021). It was pretty much about a year’s worth of work.”

“This is the first time we wrote things and trashed them even when we got to pre-production with them. It was like this is not it, but the rest of this is. Then ‘Fearless’ kind of came in the ninth inning, and the way it worked out, everyone seemed to like it, and they said, ‘That’s the first single.’”

We had a lot of time to think about what kind of band we wanted to be, what we wanted to do, what we wanted to say.

In addition to being lead vocalist, Reese is the primary lyricist for the band. “We all have our purpose. Mine is to write and to sing. That’s where it’s been for me. I just want to write the best stuff. Write honestly. Not try to take advantage of things. It’s me. It’s not me trying to pander or something. The key to myself if its edible then the song is good. I just want to write good music. I want to say what I feel.”

When it comes to the new album, “it’s a really naked record for me. It’s a very personal record to me as far as lyrics. I think you can do whatever the hell you want in music. For me it was what I needed to do. If you asked me, why did you do it, it’s because I had to. I really felt like I had to. I just want to make sure that whatever I’m going to put out there is an honest thing about myself so if you want to get to know me as a person, just listen to every song.”

“‘Fearless’ is about when I was a kid, I was just an idiot. I would be the first person to jump off the waterfall cliffs and if there were waves, giant waves on the beach I would sprint right down and right into them. I liked that. To this day, I am still that same way. I hung by my feet upside down at Las Rageous festival and got banned for life. They did not like that. But I did it. There is this thing in my head, ‘Nah, this is not the time you die yet.’ I’ve always been that kind of a dare devil. “

When Covid put the band on hiatus, Nick took the opportunity for some personal growth. “Over the pandemic I had all this free time and after the three months of depression were over, I was like, ‘You know what, I’m just going to relearn how to sing. Top to bottom.’” To achieve this Reese enlisted vocal coach, Melisa Cross. “She broke it down for me scientifically,” Nick notes.  “She went and watched every live video of me singing and said, ‘OK here’s the things you are doing right and here’s what you can improve on,’ never using the word wrong. She (shared) your body is your body, and you know your body. There is a lot of gain to that, and it’s been great.”

    Joyous Wolf
    Joyous Wolf

Having cut their tour teeth opening for some heavy hitters, what did the band take away from those experiences? “I didn’t really learn anything, but I learned about touring, and I watched performances and I obviously picked up some things. I learned a lot watching Myles Kennedy (lead vocalist in Slash’s backing band Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators) perform. Very inspiring especially in the new format of myself. If anything, my tour manager obviously taught me everything about touring. Like, ‘Don’t talk to this person just go straight to your corner.’ I learned how to live on the road, mainly by doing it. There wasn’t a band that said, ‘Hey we’re going to teach you how this goes.’  It was never like that. Usually, it was staying out of the way of the bands and if they welcome you into their circle (great). But we’re pretty good at staying quiet and out of the way.”

As the final touches are being put on the yet to be named album, Joyous Wolf is heading out on the road for a three-month run across the U.S.  The band will be opening for Dorothy on her “Gifts from the Holy Ghost” tour. So, what is it like on the road with these up-and-coming rockers?  “We never have any issues. People ask us is there problems or turmoil and there is nothing that would be entertaining. Nothing that would be an actual issue. Nothing that would be exciting like Mötley Crüe bullshit, you know what I mean, nothing like that. We are not that way. I think people see how underwhelming we are when they hang around us.”

“I remember our tour manager (Stripes) when he first signed on to be our tour manager in early 2019. He thought he would be carrying dudes passed out on his shoulder and whatever. Then he realized that after the first show when he was still in the venue after the show was over and he was like where the hell did they go and he walked out to the van and there the four us were playing Mario Kart. I think at that moment he realized this was going to be a boring tour. We are not that type.”

    Joyous Wolf
    Joyous Wolf

While subdued behind the scenes, the band is anything but when performing live. Electricity flows from the first note. Greg Braccio on base, and Robert Sodaro on drums set a rock-solid foundation for the songs to live on. Blake Allard’s guitar paints the musical canvas with his piercing leads and power chords.  And Nick completes the picture, sharing the depth and breath of every song with his vocals.

Catch Joyous Wolf on tour in the tri-state area at Brooklyn Bowl Philly, PA 4/10, The Wellmont Theater, Montclair NJ on 4/15, and The Lost Horizon, Syracuse NY 4/16. Check their website for additional tour dates.

  • Cannibal Corpse Sell Out Anthology

On February 26th, Cannibal Corpse stopped by to a sold out show at Anthology in Rochester and accompanied with a pretty heavy line up by White Chapel, Revocation, and Shadow Of Intent. Upon entering the venue, you can tell right off the bat it was going to be a packed house with the main floor area already full and lines at the mercy tables. The show started off with Shadow Of Intent who reigned from Connecticut and wasted no time getting the crowd moving and you can feel the energy throughout.

Next up to kick off the wild night was Revocation, who was formed in Massachusetts. Revocation was a fun band to watch as front man David Davidson, who is the lead vocalist and guitarist.

After them, we had the heavy hitters, White Chapel who are well known for their American deathcore music. When they took the stage, things got a bit foggy and rowdy as some decided it was time to give the security staff a workout.

Looking back into the crowd, all you can see is a sea of metal lovers waiting for the main reason why we all came out tonight. Cannibal Corpse, who is no stranger to the area as they were formed in Buffalo back in 1988. As soon as the band kicked off their set, crowd surfers were in full force, making some of the photographers duck for cover as the security staff was busy catching them. Watching them perform was a delight, as they really showed why they are part of some of the most iconic death metal bands around. With their tour in full swing still, surely it won’t be long before Cannibal Corpse comes back with another killer show that would most definitely sell out again.

  • All That Remains “Fall of Ideals” tour visits Rapids Theatre

All That Remains brought their 15th anniversary of the “Fall of Ideals” album tour to Niagara Falls on Monday March 14, 2022. This was their third stop on a long awaited tour for the band. All That Remains is an American heavy metal band from Springfield, Massachusetts, formed in 1998. Three other bands join All That Remains on this tour – Miss May I (direct support), Varials, and Tallah.

    Tallah

Tallah- Rapids Theatre (Photo credit Mike Miller)

The opener of the night was Tallah, a Nu metal band from Pennsylvania. They are currently signed to Earache records. Their whole setlist was filled with energy, power and emotion. At one point the singer Justin Bonitz, did a flip on the stage in the middle of a song. Tallah drew a decent size crowd considering they were an opener. Their setlist contained some of their hits titled; Overconfidence, No one should read this, and Telescope. Tallah consists of Justin Bonitz – vocals, Max Portnoy – drums (touring with code orange currently), Derrick Schneider – lead guitar, Alizé “Mewzen” Rodriguez – turntables, samples, keyboards , and Alex Snowden – rhythm guitar.

    Varials

    Varials
    Bass- Mike Foley

Next up was Varials. They are an American hardcore punk band from Philadelphia, formed in 2013. The band currently consists of Lead Vocalist Mitchell Rogers, guitarist James Hohenwarter, bassist Mike Foley and drummer Sean Rauchut. The crowd started to hint at this point that there would be circle pits and crowd surfing later in the night. Fans started to bob their head and move with the music just slightly more than the previous band. Varial’s setlist consisted of; South of One, In Darkness Violent Measures, Pain Again, Romance, God Talk, Anything to Numb, and Empire of Dirt.

    Miss May I

    Miss May I
    Vocals- Levi Benton

Miss May I is an American metalcore band from Troy, Ohio, formed in 2007. They are direct support for All That Remains on this tour. The crowd really got into the music and at times had multiple people crowd surfing into the photo pit. Security seemed concerned at times when bringing reinforcements up front to handle the people. The band stood on platforms in front of the stage at times so everyone in the crowd could get a good view of them. Some of the songs they played include, Under fire, My sorrow and Shadows inside. Miss May I band members include Levi Benton – vocals, B.J. Stead – lead guitar, Justin Aufdemkampe – rhythm guitar, Jerod Boyd – drums, and Ryan Neff – bass.

By this time in the show, the crowd was packed together waiting for All That Remains to kickoff their set. You could feel the anticipation in the air by looking at each crowd member and seeing the smiles on their faces. The lights went black, and each band member walked out one at a time with intro music playing. Then appears the singer, Phil Labonte, walking out in a leather jacket. He quickly walks towards the front of stage and the song “Indictment” starts immediately.

The crowd is instantly into the trance of the metal thrashing music. Drummer Jason Costa, blasting out 32nd note double bass runs and Lead Guitarist Jason Richardson shredding solos, hit the crowd hard. Ear protection was most definitely needed for the music plus the roar from the crowd can damage your hearing.

    All That Remains Guitarists

All That Remains asked the crowd at one point, who has seen them before and who has never seen them. The applause for each was 50/50 so the band gained a-lot of new fans in Niagara Falls. They played all their hits from their “Fall of Ideals” album which include; Six, The Weak Willed and This Calling. Check out how far All That Remains has come from our review of when they last played the area at Town Ballroom in 2015 with Swedish band In Flames.

You can catch the All That Remains tour throughout the months of March, April and May. They will have another stop in New York on Thursday May 19th at the Paramount in Huntington.

  • Killswitch Engage Unleash Atonement Tour in Rochester

Metalcore titans Killswitch Engage brought their Atonement Tour to Rochester at the Main Street Armory with August Burns Red and Light The Torch. With only a couple shows left to go on their U.S. run, all the bands still gave it their all and the crowd was singing along to every song.

Opening the night was Light The Torch, fronted by Howard Jones who was Killswitch Engage’s previous singer before Jesse Leach came back. Both Howard and Jesse contributed some of the best Killswitch material they have released, and it is always a great pleasure to see when there’s no bad blood between artists and they tour together. Immediately starting their set, Howard Jones takes to the dim it stage to a roar of applause from the crowd. Not holding back, Light The Torch goes right into “More Than Dreaming”, which showcases Howard’s vocals in both his cleans and screams.

After listening to Killswitch Engage for so long, and not being too familiar with Light The Torch’s work, it is difficult to not compare this band with the sound Howard brought with his time in Killswitch. There are some similarities, however that is mostly due to Howard having a fantastic voice that just carries to whatever project he is working on. Light The Torch had a 10 song set that was basically nonstop from start to finish. Some of their hard hitting songs such as “Calm Before The Storm”, “Death of Me”, and “Become the Martyr” really set the mood for the evening and did a great job of energizing the audience. Closing out their set with “Die Alone” Howard told the crowd how much it means to him to be able to still perform after experiencing a dark time, and how fortunate he is to have his band members with him. “I fucking love this so much, thank you, thank you, thank you!” he says before giving the crowd the metal horns and ending their set.

August Burns Red wasted no time coming out swinging with “The Truth of a Liar”. Immediately, it’s like a switch is hit, going from Light The Torch’s dimly lit set to a full blown lightshow and fog machines. August Burns Red didn’t slow down at all for their set, feeding off of the crowds energy as mosh pits emerged and crowd surfers started flowing. The bands vocalist, Jake Luhrs, commanded the crowd with his stage presence as he moved around swinging the microphone and jumping up onto their platforms. Highlights of their set included a very surprising cover of the “Legend of Zelda” theme song right into “Mariana’s Trench”. Performing for just under an hour, August Burns Red really delivered a great performance. This was many of the attendees first time seeing them live, as shown by a raise of hands when asked by Jake Luhrs who’s first time it was, and it was clear they won over many new fans.

After a quick teardown of the August Burns Red set, Killswitch Engage is ready to take the stage. Opening with “Unleashed” off their latest album, was the perfect introduction. Since this was one of the final shows of the tour, you would expect the band to be a little worn out, however this was not the case. Jesse Leach ran around the stage full of energy, singing and screaming the songs with as much enthusiasm as you’d expect on the opening night.

Killswitch Engage always puts on a fantastic show, and this night was no different. The banter between guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz and the crowd provided a comedic value that is almost expected at a Killswitch show. With fan favorites to sing along to such as “My Last Serenade”, “Daylight Dies”, and “My Curse” it was a pleasure to hear a combination of their older material as well as their new stuff. The highlight of their set was definitely when Killswitch brought Howard Jones on stage to sing two of their most well-known songs, “The End of Heartache” and “Rose of Sharyn”. This set the crowd into a massive sing along which was so much fun. Ending their set with a duet of “The Signal Fire”, Killswitch Engage delivered one of the best metal tours so far this year.

Setlist: Unleashed > Hate by Design > Know Your Enemy > My Last Serenade > I Am Broken Too > Reckoning > In Due Time > Daylight Dies > This Fire > As Sure as the Sun Will Rise > The Crownless King > Irreversal > Always > My Curse > Strength of the Mind > Rose of Sharyn(with Howard Jones) > The End of Heartache(with Howard Jones) > The Signal Fire(with Howard Jones)

  • Acid Dad Captivates Crowd in Collar City Debut

Brooklyn based alternative buzz band Acid Dad brought their “A” game to Troy on Frida, March 4th, mesmerizing fans at the collar city’s newest live music night spot, No Fun. Conveniently located along River Street, despite the club’s name good times were aplenty as the band dropped a heavy dose of their signature psychedelic shoegaze sound; a sonic assault of fuzz infused feedback, groove-heavy basslines, relevant and catchy lyrics complete with an atmospheric 60’s-style liquid drop lightshow that would have made even a young Syd Barret feel at home.

Acid Dad performs at No Fun in Troy, NY

Consisting of duel singer/guitarist duo Vaughn Hunt and Sean Fahey, drummer Trevor Mustoe, and on this night bassist Zoltán Sindhu, who was performing double duty after opening the show with NYC’s Programmique, Acid Dad have been riding a steady wave of growth since Vaughn first started recording the band’s debut EP in a Bushwick basement in 2016. During the pandemic, the guys made good use of their time by building a new recording space in Queens, while also continuing to independently produce all their own music, art and even build some of their own instruments.  The end result was  their latest LP, ‘Take It From The Dead,’  which “dropped” last summer on Brooklyn’s Greenway Records and psych powerhouse LEVITATION’s label, The Reverberation Appreciation Society.

Originally scheduled to play “No Fun” in early February, Acid Dad finally made their Troy debut this past Friday, March 4th.   Playing to a diverse crowd ranging from college students, hipsters, plane jane’s, punks, drunks, die hards, posers, nerds, frat boys, Dead heads, lo-life’s, sell-outs, some cool dudes and a few people still somehow in between, the multi-generational appeal of Acid Dead was apparent from the start. In contrast to lyrics contained in their song “Searchin’” that claim the band is “still stuck in the 70’s” Acid Dad has clearly ingested a multitude of influences that span all eras of music. With a sound the brings to mind influential “do it yourself” indie bands of the late 90’s like The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols, Acid Dad have steadily built on those foundations and steadily developed their own unique, catchier spin on the timeless distorted guitar-based genre.

Sean Fahey & Zoltán Sindhu performing with Acid Dad

Just a block away from Troy’s Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Acid Dad opened their set Friday night with the single “BBQ.” Featuring an infectious bass-heavy groove matched by a searing twin guitar attack and an utterly hypnotic light show, fans dug it from the get-go. Following that were intoxicating renditions of “Brain Body,” “She Only Eats Organic,” and the aforementioned “Seachin’” By the time Acid Dad reached the opening chords of the thought provoking “Marine,” the band was firing on cylinders so hot, jackets in the once freezing room were no longer needed.   Taking a moment to tune up, the slow burn closer of their self-titled debut album “Dissin’ was next, followed in contrast by the opening track of the same album, “Die Hard.”

From there came perhaps the most well received song on the evening, the lead single from their latest release, “RC Driver.” Keeping the energy high with the relentless driving rhythm of “Living with a Creature” here the young guitar slingers really cut loose, letting their hair fly while thrashing about the stage and indulging in their effects pedals.   Another highlight on the night followed that in the form of “Djembe,” where the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s influence, circa “Give it Back!” era, could really be heard.

    “We lie, We all lie
Because mother Russia does not suffer
    We run, We all run
    I can’t run, I can’t run
Because mother Russia does not suffer
    Mother Russia will not suffer”

But just wait mister, Mr. Major
    Well I question your precedence
    Mister, Mr. Major
    Well I question your precedence”

    lyrics from Mr. Major

Taking a moment to address the audience before the start of the next song, Vaughn Hunt openly talked about the escalating situation in the Ukraine and that despite writing “Mr. Major” five years ago, it’s taken on a whole new relevance in recent weeks. While fans soon realized this might be a moment worth capturing on their phones, the band then launched into a particularly heartfelt version of it, giving it everything they had left in the tank and bringing the set to a close. Despite the diversity within the mixed collar city crowd, the they were unified in their overwhelming approval and in their pleas for one more song. Happy to oblige, the exciting young band came back out for a fitting encore of “Don’t Get Taken.”  Afterwards the hardworking and down to earth guys could be seen mingling with fans, both new and old, while selling their wares at the merch table.

Acid Dad’s Vaughn Hunt wrote ‘Mr. Major’ five year ago.

Singing songs about everything from drug addiction and dead friends, explicit sex and failed relationships to corporate greed and communism, don’t be fooled by their bunk name.  Acid Dad are for real.  Young, passionate, authentic, and believable.  With a catchy recipe of heavy garage riffs mixed with a little punk, some post-rock vibes, a dose of new wave and plenty of sprawling sonic distortion, the only thing testing higher than their potential pH levels is their potential to become one of New York’s most relevant bands.  With a huge spring on the horizon that includes a national tour with Australia’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and a confirmed slot on the ridiculously stacked Shakey Knee’s Music Festival in Atlanta, it would seem the best is yet to come and that Acid Dad is still far from peaking.

Acid Dad | 3-4-2022 Troy, New York | No Fun

Setlist: BBQ, Brain Body, She only Eats Organic, Seachcin’, Marine, High, Dissin’, Die Hard, RC Driver, Living with a Creature, Djembre, Mr. Major

  • Ukrainian Band BlazerJacket Release New Single “Get Out”

Ukrainian band BlazerJacket is quite literally living with explosions and Russian armed forces nearby. Despite the hardships they are facing, they have released their new single and video for “Get Out.”

BlazerJacket’s cover art for “Get Out.”

According to the NYTimes, NYC is home to over 150,000 Ukrainian Americans, the largest community of its kind in the country. The situation in Ukraine might cause this number to rise, with an influx of refugees. NYC is a melting pot of different music and musical influences as cultures have come together over the past four centuries.

As one would imagine, “Get Out” has taken on a new meaning as of late. Originally, the song was about being drawn into Stockholm Syndrome and its effects, about trying to get out of an abusive and parasitic society. Now, it could be interpreted of having Ukraine be peaceful again, and how the events are affecting the band.

BlazerJacket was formed in Kyiv by Denis Cherryman (The Cherry Men / Dirty Bird 13) and Hybri Mod. Their aesthetic is based on their love for science fiction novels. They combine different elements of rock and electronics to transform their sound.

The song and video are dark and loud with a lot of electronic beats happening as the singer screams “get out!” It is a song you can dance to and really absorb its message. The video is unique in that it was first performed at the Comic Con Ukraine music stage in 2021. They captured the moments of that performance and inserted them into the video.

BlazerJacket’s new song “Get Out” is out now, and is both important and influential considering current events in Ukraine right now.

On Thursday, March 10 at 8pm, The City Winery in New York City will put on a benefit concert for Ukraine through the Come Back Alive foundation, the largest foundation providing support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The benefit concert will be hosted by Ukrainian singer Eugene Hütz his band Gogol Bordello. There will also be performances by The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn & Franz Nicolay, Jesse Malin, Lady Lamb, Marc Roberge from O.A.R., Matisyahu, Patti Smith, The Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt, Suzanne Vega, and more.

Ukraine belongs to Ukrainians! We are an ancient independent nation distinctly and forever different from this criminally insane neighbor. The proof you all see now in the fierce mind-blowing battle that the world is witnessing, a battle of Ukrainian people’s choice of freedom and democracy against psychotic totalitarian regime next door. Please help us to win this battle, help us to end this catastrophe immediately and bring the intruder to justice. Please stand with Ukraine in the battle for its democracy and freedom. Please Donate and Fundraise with us. Ukraine needs all of you. All your support counts.

    Eugene Hütz

Tickets are sold out but there is a waitlist. Additional donations may be made here. Additionally, City Winery will produce a limited edition, custom labeled wine which will be available at the benefit concert and online.
