  • Multicultural May Events at Bronx Music Heritage Center

    The Bronx Music Heritage Center (BMHC), located at 1303 Louis Nine Blvd. in New York City’s northern-most borough, will close out their May programming with a series of events featuring dancing, Latin music and a multicultural celebration. Events will also be held at Bronx Music Hall Plaza, located at 438 E. 163rd St.

    Although the Bronx was once a hub for music creation and performance, the disinvestment in the 1970s and 1980s destroyed many performance venues, devastating the music scene. As a result, access to arts and cultural programming has become scarce in the Bronx.

    The BMHC, created by WHEDco, is committed to preserving and promoting Bronx music, cultivating Bronx artists, spurring neighborhood revival, and providing free cultural programs for the community. T The BMHC hosts music performances, art exhibits, artists-in-residence, workshops throughout the Bronx. 

    On Saturday, May 21, the Bronx Rising! program will feature Irish, U.S. and Cuban traditional traditions highlighting percussive dancing with the groups OYU ORO and CITY STOMPERS. The show starts at 8:00 pm at the BMHC, and the cost is $7 at the door.

    On Friday, May 27, BMHC will present ABAZOS ARMY as they gear up to promote their upcoming CD release. ABAZOS ARMY combines music in a fusion of funk, reggae, Latin music, jazz and hip hop. This is a free show starting at 8:00 pm.

    BMHC ends the month with a concert in partnership with the Multicultural Music Group featuring FELIPE FOURNIER & SUPERMAMBO on Saturday, May 28th. This is as free show, held at BMH Plaza. If it rains, the concert will be held at the BMHC.

    From the BMHC archives, watch the last program held before the pandemic began.  In February 2020, celebrating International Mother Tongue Day, the video features the Bangladesh Academy of Fine Arts performing a Bengali folk dance.  BAFA is a Bronx-based group and led by Margia Shiriti.

  • Schenectady’s Jazz on Jay Schedule Announced

    Summer 2022 free music lineups are popping up all around the state, and the annual “Jazz on Jay” series in Schenectady once again has a stellar lineup to share.

    Every Thursday, a free jazz performance will take place on the corner of Jay Street and State Street from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., perfect for lunchtime enjoyment in the Electric City. Jazz enthusiasts will get to enjoy singers and instrumentalists from across the region.

    The series kicks off on Thursday, June 9 with Colleen Pratt and Friends, in conjunction with Downtown Schenectady ArtsWeek.

    If you’re a fan of jazz, then Jay Street in Schenectady is the spot to be. The performances will go on rain or shine, with a rain location inside Proctors Theatre’s Robb Alley.

  • Post Malone is joined by Fleet Foxes and Roddy Ricch for SNL Debut

    The penultimate episode in Season 47 of Saturday Night Live featured two SNL first timers – Selena Gomez as host, and Syracuse native Post Malone as musical guest.

    Gomez did serve as musical guest on January 23, 2016, and used her monologue to discuss her TV show past, including her time on Barney & Friends, and discussed her current show, Only Murders in the Building, featuring SNL-vetaran Steve Martin and SNL-alum Martin Short.

    Steve Martin would appear in a pre-taped “Unventor Documentary” sketch as Archie Gizmo, the inventor of the whoopie cushion. He tells the origin story of the gag gift, with Dina Beans (Aidy Bryant) as the muse he fell in love with.

    For Post Malone’s first song, the dark stage was backlit by white spotlights, the singer on stage alone dressed head to toe in leather to perform “Cooped Up.” Partway through he was joined by Roddy Ricch, who featured on the remix of “Wow” in 2019. The new song dropped this past week, with lyrics that note how Malone gave Ricch a big opportunity: “And Posty took me on my first damn tour date/ He had me rockin’ every night, sold out arenas/ I’m project n—a, I never thought I would see s–t/ I tried to tell you, you prolly wouldn’t believe us.” “Cooped Up” appears on Twelve Carat Toothache, set to be released on June 3.

    Post Malone would show up twice in sketches – first as the conscience/shoulder-angel of Chris Redd in showed up in the sketch “Intuition,” and later in the final sketch of the night “Baby Monitor” as a baby in a crib.

    Post Malone’s second song, “A Love Hate Letter To Alcohol,” also appears on the upcoming album. Fleet Foxes along with LA-based singer-songwriter Adam Melchor served as backup to Malone, all clad in black. Malone was revealed on one knee and wearing a calf-length dress along with white button down and black suspenders.

    E.R.I.E. – “Can’t Stop Runnin’”

    E.R.I.E. came on to the Albany, NY scene in 2020, the week a global pandemic began to rear its ugly head. What began as a passion project developed while singer/songwriter TJ Foster was unexpectedly laid up in a hospital bed for three days, has turned into a fully-formed quartet, winning over audiences with their catchy songs and energetic live performances.

    Seize Atlantis – “Atlas Shrugged”

    Formed in 2019, NYS Music March Madness 2022 Final Four artist Seize Atlantis is an Alternative Rock Band located in Upstate NY that plays a variety of genres, including originals and covers. The band includes James Mullen – Lead Vocals/Guitar, Mike Dardas – Bass/Vocals, Luc Bourgault – Lead Guitar, and Cody Platt – Drums.

    Kirsty Rock – “Green Is”

    Most notably know for her soaring vocals with internationally renowned reggae super group, Easy Star All-Stars, Kirsty Rock comes with her own distinctive, soulful & earthy reggae sound. Inspired by a deep love of Vermont, Rock brings us on a sonic and visual journey. Rock can also be heard on Dub Side of the Moon, Radiodread, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Dub Band, First Light & Thrillah.  

  • Monkeys On Ecstasy (moe.) Warm up for Summer at Empire Underground

    Performing under the pseudonym Monkeys On Ecstasy, moe. treated 350 lucky fans to a performance at Empire Underground on Thursday, May 12. With guitarist Chuck Garvey on the mend, Suke Cerulo (Schleigho, Lynch) and Nate Wilson (Ghosts of Jupiter, Blue Star Radiation), the now-sextet of musicians warmed up for the summer shows that lie ahead, with a powerful 11-song performance.

    A Monkeys on Ecstasy show provides moe. with the rare chance for a club performance, making for an intimate and intense show, one that diehard moe.rons gravitated to, selling the show out within 24 hours. Hundreds more would stream the show online as well, bringing a little bit of the magic of this show to the masses. Monkeys on Ecstasy shows have been played periodically over the years, allowing for surprise treats for fans, including a 1998 performance in Utica at Captain Trips Rainforest Cafe.

    Fans in the Capital District will recall the August 18, 2005 performance of moe. as The Vinnie Amico Experience, where drummer Vinnie Amico took centerstage at a sweat-stained Revolution Hall.

    For Thursday night, the band began at 8:13pm with fan favorite “Happy Hour Hero” segueing cleanly into “Silver Sun” and then the ever rare “Johnny Lineup.” For 42 minutes, there was not a single break in the action on stage, and prior to a lengthy intro to “Lazarus” did the band finally take a moment to breathe and thank the audience for joining them this evening. Just prior to “Buster,” the beginning of “Rebubula” was teased, before Rob Derhak took the reigns and played the iconic bass intro to “Buster.” The set ended up with “Downward Facing Dog” and a band that was tight and familiar, as two seasoned musicians to provided an ample substitute for Garvey.

    The four song second set began with the heavy as ever “McBain,” allowing for plenty of improvisation between Wilson and Cerulo and guitarist Al Schnier. A patient fade into “Brent Black” paid off with a significant ‘drums’ portion from Amico and Jim Loughlin, which found its way into Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive” and finally the classic moe. jam vehicle, “Recreational Chemistry.” To close the night, the relatively new “Skitchin Buffalo” served as a long encore, the audience pouring out to the alley behind North Pearl Street, having witnessed a rare as ever performance.

  • Catskill Mountain Jubilee Returns August 2022 with Disco Biscuits, Dark Star Orchestra, The New Deal and more

    The Catskill town of East Durham, NY will once again play host to Catskill Mountain Jubilee over August 11-14, 2022. Headliners for the festival include Dark Star Orchestra (performing four sets), The Disco Biscuits with two sets, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, The New Deal and many more.

    Blackthorne Resort will play host for the second annual event over August 11-14, with four nights of music starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday.

    Giving back is a big part of the Jubilee community, as the festival contributes a portion of its profits to charitable causes. In 2021, over $15,000 was raised for three different nonprofits. Catskill Mountain Jubilee is brought to you by Drop the Mics and Full Circle Music Productions.

  • Flyday Music Festival 2022 Lineup Headlined by Ghost-Note, Screaming Headless Torsos

    Flyday Music Festival will return this fall, September 29 through October 2, 2022 at Blackthorne Resort in East Durham, NY in the heart of the Catskills.

    Flyday Music Festival, in its fifth year at Blackthorne Resort, is a non-corporate, intimate festival put on by two musicians who love great music. A celebration of life and creativity, freedom, spirit, heart and soul, and friends and family through music, art, and movement, Flyday has grown since inception in 2017, and brings together a stellar lineup and community.

    Artists will perform on two side-by-stages at the 100+ acre Blackthorne Resort, with 80+ rooms on site, camping and RV sites, a pool and tiki bar, in addition to a creek, hiking, a bar, a restaurant, a playground and play fields and courts, and a haunted house. Amenities include free showers, flush toilets and charging stations for all campers.

    The quality of the music and the coming together of friends and the ever-growing Flyday Family is the main focus of Flyday today. Besides some of the best music the Northeast has to offer, there will be workshops (tie-dye, juggling, and more), vendors (massage, artisan, clothing, food, microbrew) and glass blowing and other artisan demonstrations. There will be live, interactive art exhibits as well as a black-light art gallery/lounge.

  • Arcade Fire Join the Five-Timers Club on SNL

    Arcade Fire returned to Saturday Night Live for the fifth time, and first since 2018, alongside host and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Benedict Cumberbatch.

    With their fifth performance, Arcade Fire joins a Five-Timers Club of their own, alongside Miley Cyrus, James Taylor, Kanye West, Rihanna, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. (Arcade Fire had also served as backing band for Mick Jagger’s performance on SNL in 2012)

    Following their memorable 2013 appearance, Arcade Fire aired a 30-minute concert special directed by Roman Coppola, and featuring cameos from Bono, Ben Stiller, James Franco, Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, and more. During the special, the band performed new songs “Here Comes the Night Time,” “Normal Person” and “We Exist.” Watch the unique performance below.

    The band released their latest album WE on Friday, May 6, as well as announcing a world tour that finds them back in the Big Apple in November.

    For tonight’s Saturday Night Live, the show stayed in step with the week’s news as the cold open mocked the root centuries-old argument Justice Alito references in his leaked Dobbs v. Jackson draft. This is SNL at its best, mocking the establishment and bringing to light the modern morality of social issues.

    Cumberbatch celebrated mothers in his monologue, including his mom as well as his wife, but no overt Dr. Strange references were found tonight. Although, Cumberbatch was joined later in the show with a surprise appearance by Multiverse of Madness co-star Elizabeth Olson in “The Understudy.“

    Noting two of his favorite words are “Arcade Fire”, Cumberbatch introduced the musical guest, who dove into “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)” off WE. With wacky waving inflatable tube men in front of the stage, Win Butler and Régine Chassagne led the band through the enchanting number, ending with Butler saying “I Love you Mom.”

    On Weekend Update, Kate McKinnon made an appearance as Justice Amy Coney Barrett to discuss the apparent intention to overturn Roe v. Wade (against public opinion) citing laws from the 1600s.

    Arcade Fire’s second songs, “The Lightning I,” and its album counterpart “The Lightning II,” were accommpanied by a purple backdrop projecting shadows of the 9-piece band. The uptempo “The Lightning II” raised the vibe on a dime, building a froth while pouring everything into “A day a week a month a year, every second brings me here,” cresting with repitition, and closing with “Waiting on the lightning, waiting on the light, what will the light bring?”

    In keeping with the Mother’s Day episode theme, Butler had “Call Your Mom” written onto his guitar during these songs, saying at the end ““A woman’s right to choose forever and ever and ever. Amen.”

    To close the show, Cumberbatch and a half dozen cast members wore shirts bearing 1973, a nod to the year of Roe v. Wade. Arcade Fire then took the SNL stage for a third and final song, “End of the Empire I-IV,” as the credits rolled.

    Saturday Night Live returns on May 14 with host Selena Gomez and musical guest Post Malone.

  • Arcade Fire Announce World Tour, Barclays Center Show in November

    On the day they released their sixth album WE, Arcade Fire has announced an extensive tour that features European and North American legs. Arcade Fire makes their way to New York on Friday, November 4th with a stop at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

    The tour starts in late August at Dublin, Ireland’s 3Arena, and ends in Toronto, Ontario on December 1st at Scotiabank Arena.

    The WE world tour will bring the full production of Arcade Fire’s “must-see live act” (Variety) experience to global stages. For all European dates, Feist will be the special guest, while the North American leg will include Beck performing an acoustic set each night.

    Tickets for all dates will be on sale to the public beginning Friday, May 13th at 10 am. Arcade Fire has partnered with PLUS1 with $1/£1/€1 per ticket going to KANPE and their work bringing support to the most vulnerable communities in Haiti. Tickets are on sale here.

  • Season 3 of Undermine Examines Phish’s Baker’s Dozen

    Phish’s Baker’s Dozen is the focus of the new season of Undermine, from Osiris Media. The legendary 13-night run featured the Vermont jamband performing over 250 songs with no repeats over 13 nights at The Garden.

    In exploring this remarkable feat, Undermine Season 3 features interviews with Scott Bernstein (Jambase), Jesse Jarnow (WFMU, After Midnight), musicologist Dr. Jake Cohen, and more, plus conversations with a bevy of fans who were lucky enough to catch all 13 shows.

    For those unfamiliar, in July and August of 2017, Phish called Madison Square Garden home for a three-week stretch of shows that has come to define the peak of the current era, while pushing them forward musically and creatively in the five years since. By incorporating thematic gags, rare songs, a focus on improvisation, and a commitment to not repeating a single song, the Baker’s Dozen exemplified risk-taking and boundary-pushing music that cemented Phish’s place in rock history. 

    The Baker’s Dozen was a major milestone in Phish history, which solidified their place in rock history—no repeats in 13 shows, moments of improvisation that will be remembered forever, and a banner that still hangs in the building to this day. We’re so excited to give Phish fans, and music fans, a picture of how this historic run of 13 concerts came together, and how they were experienced and now remembered by many members of our community.

    Throughout this third season of Undermine, listeners can explore the Baker’s Dozen with a focus on the operational planning and execution of the run, as well as through conversations with rock journalists who captured the importance of The Baker’s Dozen in rock history. The history of Madison Square Garden, a focus on setlist crafting and improvisation are highlighted with a focus on the larger context of these features in rock history, as well as the impact of the run on Phish’s career since.
