  • Composer Michael Vincent Waller Releases New Song “Survey Says”

New York City composer Michael Vincent Waller releases new song “Survey Says” off his upcoming EP Classic$ which is due to be released this Spring on AWAL.

Classic$ blends hip-hop and contemporary classical music in a very hybrid setting. Rap music has sampled classical features for decades, but rarely do we see post-Philip-Glass minimalism incorporated, where these neo-classical cinematic influences are at the melodic core of the entire production. This sample-inspired composition process yields new results in the introspective and hypnotic textures in trap music.

The music of Waller has been described as lyrical and introspective, drawing inspiration from impressionism, post-minimalism and world music. Waller’s practice has been cultivated through private study with La Monte Young and Bunita Marcus. He has released three full length albums: The South Shore, Trajectories, and Moments – which have universally positive reviews garnered reviews in the WIRE and Pitchfork, amongst many others.

Michael has collaborated with musicians and producers across genres such as Jlin, R. Andrew Lee, Stephane Ginsburg and William Winant. Additionally, he’s performed at Carnegie Hall, Roulette, Palais de Tokyo Museum and was recently named “New Artist Of The Month” by Musical America Worldwide. As a composer, Michael Vincent Waller has released three full-length albums via Unseen Worlds, Recital and XI Records.

  • Shock G, co-founder of Digital Underground, dead at 57

Shock G, founder of West-coast hip hop group, Digital Underground, has passed away. Best known for the group’s breakthrough hit “The Humpty Dance” and his entertainingly provocative alter ego “Humpty Hump,” Shock G — born, Gregory Jacobs — also achieved belated notoriety for mentoring a young Tupac Shakur and co-producing his debut album 2Pacalypse Now.

According to his father, Edward Racker, Shock G was found dead in a Tampa, FL hotel room. The cause of death was unclear. He was 57 years old.

    shock G digital underground

Born in Far Rockaway, Queens in 1963, Shock G would move to Tampa in 1980, back north to Queens, then return to Tampa where he worked as a radio DJ. From there, he headed west to Los Angeles and later Oakland, where he worked at a music store. It was there that he connected with Jimi “Chopmaster J” Dright from Berkeley, and Tampa hip-hop radio deejay Kenneth “Kenny-K” Waters to form Digital Underground in 1987. The hip-hop group made their mark with their hit single “The Humpty Dance,” which featured the prosthetic nose wearing Shock G rapping as his alter ego “Humpty Hump.”

Playing a key role in the rise of West Coast hip hop, Digital Underground was influenced by funk bands of the 1970s, and frequently sampled in their music. A distinct contrast to gangster rap, the unique style of Shock G and jam-session vibe to albums made Digital Underground a stand out group of the era. George Clinton would go on to co-produce “The Humpty Dance.”

In 1991, Tupac Shakur would link up with Digital Underground, going from dancer to roadie to band member. Tupac’s 1993 breakout single “I Get Around” was produced by Shock G, who also worked with Dr. Dre and Prince.

Shock G, Tupac and Digital Underground would appear in the 1991 Dan Ackroyd comedy, Nothing But Trouble, in a memorable court room scene that included a performance of “Same Song.”

A talented and versatile entertainer, Shock G was a jack-of-all-trades. He played drums and the keyboard, produced his own records, choreographed his own videos and was wildly entertaining on stage. Digital Underground’s rowdy live shows became a staple of the group’s appeal. The increased entertainment value that came with Shock G’s ingenuity allowed up-and-coming entertainers a chance to showcase their talent.

Here we see a young Tupac Shakur performing live on the Arsenio Hall Show alongside Shock G during the height of the group’s popularity.

Shock G’s genius wasn’t just in his production or his rapping abilities, He marketed the group and their debut album, Sex Packets, with several grandiose tales that added mystique and made fans wonder just what in the hell was going to be on this album. Claiming in an interview that the name of the album came from a sex pill that led to orgasms as soon as a capsule was placed on the tongue. Though fans and the media were left to decipher whether Shock G was pulling on over on them, it is clear in hindsight that he had a firm understanding of the entertainment industry and what would get the group over the hump.

Tributes were shared on Twitter from Shock G’s peers and fans.

  • Lake George Music Festival Announces New Venue for 2021 Season

Lake George Music Festival has announced a new venue for their 2021 season at the Carriage House on the grounds of Fort William Henry. The season will follow state and local COVID-19 guidelines while bringing back some much needed live music to the Lake George area.

    Lake George Music Festival

The Carriage House on the grounds of Fort William Henry was a popular venue for years ago for the Lake George Music Festival and its resurgence into the spotlight recently. A big part of this resurgence has been part of a broader effort between the music festival, the Village of Lake George, and a small group of community minded individuals who wish to see Lake George become a cultural tourism destination.

Alexander Lombard who is the festival’s founder spoke about this decision in the venue in the festival’s official press release saying,

The Carriage House is absolutely the perfect indoor performance space for us. It boasts a large floor plan, easy parking, climate control, and a multitude of other amenities in a prime Lake George location; not to mention the best view of Lake George! It has a beautiful hotel, restaurants, and attractions a short walk away. I truly hope other arts groups will take advantage of this venue in the coming years, making Lake George a year-round cultural tourism destination.

One of the big reasons the festival is so excited for this venue is the venue’s capacity to handle COVID-19 safety precautions. The venue’s spacious interior allows for significant audience distancing and because of that it gives the festival the confidence it needs to rehearse and perform safety and at the highest levels. The festival will meticulously comply with required New York State mandates including limited capacity, distancing, and face coverings. They learned a great deal from hosting our live Drive-In Series last September and will use this acquired knowledge to help the Lake George Music Festival be as safe as possible.

The ten year anniversary season will be celebrated from August 18-25, 2021. The season tickets go on sale on May 1, 2021 and the single tickets will go on sale on July 1, 2021.

  • Memorial Services for DMX Announced: Where you can Watch

The official plans for the memorial services for DMX have been announced. Arrangements for the event were revealed in an Instagram post from the deceased rapper’s official page, revealing plans for two separate ceremonies.

A “Celebration of Life Memorial” is scheduled for Saturday, April 24 at 4 pm, with a “Homegoing Celebration” planned for the following day at 2:30 pm. The former reportedly will be held at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

    https://youtu.be/N9i8Usa21o8

The general public will be able to live stream both events with Saturday’s “Celebration of Life Memorial” set to stream live on Youtube with the “Homegoing Celebration” to air and stream on BET.

Attendance to both events will be restricted to only close friends and family.

DMX passed away on April 9, 2021 in New York after suffering from a heart attack. He was 50 years old.

The rapper’s death was met with an overwhelming response from fans and peers of the Grammy-nominated emcee, with both groups testifying to the rapper’s overwhelming influence in the world of hip hop and beyond. From his raw, grimy, and heart-felt delivery, to his complicated yet authentic public persona, DMX lived his life publicly representing the struggles of those from inner-cities. This weekend, fans of the hip-hop legend will be able to pay their final respects.

  • Tedeschi Trucks Fireside Live Tour Comes To Lafayette, NY for Three Nights

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi of the Tedeschi Trucks Band have announced Fireside LIVE, a special series of socially distanced, limited-capacity performances taking place this summer.

Derek and Susan will be joined by varying members of the Tedeschi Trucks Band each night, with the total band configuration ranging between four and seven musicians depending on the show.

The modified lineup will perform under the name ‘Tedeschi Trucks’ for the first time as a nod to their band members who are unable to join the tour because of the challenging conditions with the current pandemic.

Fireside LIVE was inspired by their very successful at-home online performance series from earlier this year, the Fireside Sessions. The shows will be the first fully live public performances for the ensemble since February 2020, and come on the heels of the recent postponement of their annual summer Wheels of Soul Tour to next year (2022).

    Tedeschi Trucks Fireside Sessions

Venues will include a mix of small or reduced-capacity outdoor amphitheaters, drive-ins, and pod set-ups, all of which are COVID-19 compliant and taking precautions to ensure the safety of fans, staff, band, and crew.

Fireside LIVE will kick off in Jacksonville, FL with a two-night run on June 11 and 12 and then hit cities across the south before coming to Apple Valley Park in Lafayette, NY on July 9, 10, and 11 before continuing across the Northeast.

Tickets for all shows, except Red Rocks, will go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 23 at 10am EST.

We’re really looking forward to getting on the road and seeing everybody’s beautiful faces,” said Susan. “Getting together earlier this year to record the Fireside Sessions was really re-energizing, and we are excited to play live in front of fans again. As much as we love performing as the full Tedeschi Trucks Band, current conditions just don’t allow for us to do that.

The decision as to which members will join for each show will be decided week to week, depending on local conditions at the time.

Fireside LIVE brings to the stage the same intimate window into Tedeschi and Trucks’ creative chemistry that was on display during the Fireside Sessions, which streamed back in Feb-March on nugs.net.

Stuart Levine, February 1, 2020, London

Packed with deep cuts, reimagined songs, and several premieres of rare covers and new original songs that the band has been working on during the break, the six-episode streaming series was enthusiastically received for delivering something new and unique each week.

For fans who missed the original broadcasts or want to watch it again, TTB and nugs.net will offer a re-broadcast of all six Fireside Sessions. Fans who originally purchased the 6-episode bundle will be able to view the shows for free.

Details on the broadcasting schedule for the encore presentation of the Fireside Sessions will be announced shortly.

Both Grey Fox and Ziontific seek to prioritize the safety and well-being of everyone attending. Moving the festivals to next summer allows more time to counteract the negative consequences of the pandemic.

Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival will take place July 14-17, 2022. The Grey Fox Staff is hoping to get beyond COVID-19 with extended vaccinations, social distancing, and standard health regulations. Updates for Grey Fox 2022 will be on their website as well as other social media pages.

Last year, the team and artists joined together to create a virtual Spirit of Grey Fox 2020. Fans and musicians were able to come together to raise $25,000 for the IBMA Trust Fun for COVID-19 Relief. With this generosity and spirit of the community, the momentum pushes forward as live shows become a reality again.

Similarly, the Ziontific 10th-year celebration is postponed to June 2022. All 2020 tickets and glamping packages automatically roll over to 2022. However, anyone looking for a refund can do so by contacting Ziontific by May 19, 2021.

While fans eagerly wait for the festivities, a ZTFamily Facebook Group is open to help bring everyone together. Feel free to share Ziontific throwback photos, videos, or even write about memories there.

  • Rainforest Benefit Concert Announced for Earth Day

A Rainforest Benefit Concert was announced by FANS and KEEN x Garcia in celebration of Earth Day. The benefit concert will take place on April 22, 2021 at 8PM EST and will feature big names like Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Lettuce, Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Revue, and more.

    Rainforest Benefit Concert

The benefit concert is being put on to raise awareness about Alaska’s Tongass National Forest which is the largest temperate rainforest, and one of the most carbon-storing terrestrial ecosystems on the Earth. The performance is being held in the spirit of the Grateful Dead’s Rainforest Benefit Concert which was originally held at Madison Square Garden back on September 24, 1988.

The livestream is in part to honor Jerry Garcia’s enduring musical, artistic, and environmental legacy on top of raising awareness about Alaska’s Tongass National Forest. FANS and KEEN x Garcia are also bringing in Suzanne Vega and Jack Casady (Hot Tuna) — who played 33 years ago at the Grateful Dead’s Rainforest Benefit — to participate with a musical performance.

In addition to the musical performances, there will also be multiple conversations. One featuring  Dave Matthews (Dave Matthews Band and a member of The Wilderness Society’s Governing Council), Trixie Garcia (head of the Jerry Garcia family estate and daughter of Jerry Garcia), and The Wilderness Society. And a second one featuring  Gary Lambert (Tales from the Golden Road on SiriusXM’s Grateful Dead Channel), Ebet Roberts (legendary photographer who captured the Grateful Dead’s Rainforest Benefit Concert on September 24, 1988 at Madison Square Garden), and Charlie Miller (renowned Grateful Dead taper).

The full line-up of featured performers include: ALO, Benevento/Russo Duo, Cassandra Jenkins, Doom Flamingo, Duane Betts, Emilio Castillo (Tower of Power), Fruit Bats, Infamous Stringdusters, Jack Casady, Jackie Venson, JoJo Hermann, Kellen Asebroek (Fruition), Keller Williams, Kitchen Dwellers, Lael Neale, Lettuce, Lureto (robotrio), MIkaela Davis, Moon Taxi, Nicki Bluhm, Olivia Reid, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Revue, Southern Avenue, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Stella Blues Band, Suzanne Vega, Tash Neal, TAUK, and The Hold Steady.

The Rainforest Benefit Concert will be a free event, but donations are encouraged to protect the Tongass rainforest of Alaska. Fans watching from home will also be motivated to sign a petition asking President Biden and his administration to protect the Tongass National Forest. The event can be viewed on FANS website here.

  • Amityville Music Hall Releases ‘AMH Volume Two’

Amityville Music Hall and Long Island Emo have teamed up to release The AMH Compilation: Volume Two, following Volume One’s release in February.

    Amityville Music hall
    Artwork by Sarah Waxberg

The AMH Comp: Volume Two features 34 songs from several emerging artists and legends. Some bands included in the compilation are Crime in Stereo after their last release in 2010, Twentythreenineteen, Iron Chic, Victory Garden, Moon Tooth, Blame God and Macseal. The songs on the album are originals and covers spanning from punk, hardcore and indie rock. Each song has its own sound from Crime in Stereo’s hardcore and fiery track “The Good Empire” to Macseal’s indie and laid-back style on “These Things Happens (Live at Two Worlds)”.

The compilation is exclusively available on Long Island Emo’s bandcamp. Just like for Volume One, the second volume is available for a donation of $15. While venues are slowly beginning to reopen, the pandemic is still affecting Amityville Music Hall. Venues are allowed to open at about 33% capacity, but for the music Hall that would only allow 25 people to be there at a time, which isn’t attainable. The proceeds from The AMH Compilation: Volume Two will go to the venue and the staff.

An exclusive print is also available along with the release and the money will be allocated to Amityville Music Hall as well.
