  • Summer Camp Music Festival Reschedules to Late August

    Summer Camp Music Festival will plan to celebrate its 20 year anniversary this summer over August 20-22, and promoters are expecting it to be “truly special.”

    2020 was the first year in over 20 years that the festival has taken a long break from their patrons. Jay Goldberg Events & Entertainment created the festival back in 2000. Since their first year, the festival has always held its place at Three Sisters Park. COVID-19 protocols forced the festival to reschedule their original dates, which was Memorial Day weekend.

    We realize that Memorial Day Weekend isn’t going to be
    feasible, but we’re excited to look towards the future and gather once again in late August to celebrate life, love, and music. We are again happy to say that the vast majority of our lineup is able to join us in August for
    our 20th anniversary celebration.

    The festival’s lineup includes three days of moe. and three days of Umphrey’s McGee across various stages. The camp is known for its spacious fields for shows and late night events with eclectic artists and bands. In 2001, the festival was able to bring in around 1,000 fans. Now, they have thousands of attendees who enjoy the welcoming aspect of the camp grounds.

    Through the years, the festival has held performances from big names like The Flaming Lips, Primus, Umphrey’s McGee, Moe. and more. The festival’s website will announce more performing bands and artists over the next coming weeks. Any tickets bought for the previous date will roll over and additional information on new tickets and refunds will be announced soon.

  • Tedeschi Trucks Band Announce their Six Part Fireside Sessions

    Tedeschi Trucks Band announced their six part Fireside Sessions which was filmed at Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi’s home. The series will begin on February 18, 2021 and new episodes will air every Thursday at 8PM EST on nugs.net.

    The Tedeschi Trucks Band formed back in 2010 in Jacksonville, Florida. They are a blues rock group that is led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. They won a Grammy Award for Best Blues Album back in 2012 for their debut album, Revelator. They have released four studio and two live albums over the years. Some of their most well known songs include “Midnight in Harlem,” “Bound Glory,” “Anyhow,” and “Learn How to Love.” 

    The Fireside Sessions will be the return to live performance for The Tedeschi Trucks Band after nearly a year without performing live. With COVID-19 still raging on and touring not being an option on the table they decided to these live sessions to showcase the talented musicians in a more intimate setting. Each episode features a different cast of band members. The combinations vary from Derek and Susan as a duo to four, six, and eight-member combinations which offer unique arrangements on their song catalog, including some deeper cuts not often performed live. They will also be performing several new songs they have been working on during their time off the road.

    Each episode of the series was captured in 4K detail by 7Cinematics, which is an award-winning crew of concert filmmakers, with audio recorded, mixed and mastered by TTB’s engineer Bobby Tis. Audio from each session will also be available in an mp3 bundle or separately for purchase in all additional formats. After the 8PM broadcast, episodes will be available for on-demand viewing for a 48-hour period.Single tickets are available for $17.99 and six show bundles are available for $89.99.   • Capital One City Parks Foundation Announces Michael Mwenso Performance

    Capital One City Parks Foundation announces performance from Michael Mwenso as part of their SummerStage Anywhere series on February 25, 2021 at 7PM EST. The performance will be streamed virtually as part of a Black History Month celebration.

    The performance is titled the Michael Mwenso: Hope, Resist & Heal, Performance and will also be hosting a conversation with Shannon Effinger. Michael Mwenso is not only a musician but an artist and social commentator. He will offer his unique and ancestral perspective on Black music and its power to heal. He is an African-born queer man who grew up in London and New York. The performance will consist of a  live studio recorded performance with his group, Mwenso and the Shakes, a multicultural New York jazz group. After the performance the conversation with arts journalist Shannon Effinger focusing on the continuum and power of Black roots music will take place. 

    Michael Mwenso was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone but spent his teenage years at the legendary jazz club Ronnie Scott’s in London where he was exposed to musicians like Benny Carter, Elvin Jones, Ray Brown and Billy Higgins. Mwenso is known for his work as a  trombonist, singer and performer playing in jump bands, reggae and Afrobeat horn sections and at hard-bop sessions.

    Mwenso has worked with big names like Cécile McLorin Salvant, Jon Batiste, Aaron Diehl, Sullivan Fortner and Jamison Ross.Mwenso began his collaboration of Juilliard trained musicians known as The Shakes which come from all over the world including Sierra Leone, South Africa, Madagascar, London, France, Jamaica and Hawaii. Between all of them they create a unique jazz and blues sound  through African and Afro-American music.

    The performance will take place on February 25, 2021 at 7PM EST.   • D’Angelo Announces Verzuz DJ Battle at Apollo Theater

    D’Angelo will hold a Verzuz DJ battle against unnamed “friends,” taking place on February 27 at 8 pm EST, at the historical Apollo Theater in Harlem.

    He announced another episode of Verzuz, an online DJ-battle series, in which artists face off their contemporaries. The competition is fun, friendly, and fans cheer on artists as they DJ hit songs against each other. Previous sets have included Alicia Keys vs. John Legend. Beginning during lockdown, Verzuz has become a staple respite for music fans everywhere. The notoriously reclusive artist, D’Angelo, who champions quality over quantity will take the stage at the Apollo Theater for the first time since 2014.

    D’Angelo will be challenging several guests at his performance, which expands the online show to a larger spectacle. Due to his sparse public performances, rumors have arisen of new music, although the artist has released one album in 21 years.

    In the early 1990s, D’Angelo exploded onto the “new retro soul” scene with artists such as Erykah Badu. His 2000 hit album, Voodoo, catapulted him into the spotlight, and he retracted, rarely playing shows. The next D’Angelo album did not come to fruition until 2014, and he vanished from the public eye quickly after a supporting tour. On that tour, it was the last time D’Angelo played the Apollo Theater. This return is long anticipated, and you can stream it on February 27 at 8pm EST through Verzuz.

  • Mt. Joy To Play Silver Lake Drive-In On May 8

    On Saturday, May 8, indie rock band Mt. Joy is coming to Silver Lake Drive-In in Perry, NY. Presented by Twenty6 Productions, the show begins at 4:00 p.m. EST with special guests to be announced.

    Tickets are available in seven tiers, ranging from front-of-stage VIP pods ($275) to car seating (starting at $125). Each ticket purchase includes admission for five people, with VIP ticket holders receiving show posters. Individual tickets are also available for concertgoers in cars occupying more than five. The snack bar and restrooms are open at limited capacity, and guests must wear a face mask to use them.

    Mt. Joy formed in 2016, when former high school classmates Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar) met again on the opposite side of the country in Los Angeles. They linked up with bassist Michael Byrnes through a Craigslist ad, and named the band after Mount Joy, a mountain in Valley Forge National Historical Park near their hometown of Philadelphia, PA. The band’s first song, “Astrovan” was an instant success, receiving over two million Spotify streams in its first month of release and over 36 million to date. Other hits soon followed, such as “Sheep” and “Silver Lining.” Mt. Joy is rounded out by drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos and keyboardist Jackie Miclau.

    Mt. Joy’s second album, Rearrange Us, was released on June 5, 2020, coinciding with the murder of George Floyd. The band was unable to delay the album, so they instead donated 100% of profits to the police reform nonprofit Campaign Zero. Rearrange Us marked the band’s debut on the Billboard 200, with the single “Strangers” also reaching #5 on the Adult Alternative chart. While their dates were cut short due to the pandemic, Mt. Joy toured with the Lumineers throughout early 2020. Most recently, they released “New President” in October, ahead of Joe Biden’s victory:

  • Caffe Lena to Celebrate the Life of Matt McCabe

    Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs will celebrate the life of Matt McCabe, owner of Saratoga Guitar and former Commissioner of Finance. The memorial will be livestreamed on Saturday. February 20th at 7pm.

    The event will be hosted by McCabe’s friend and fellow musician Rick Bolton. The online tribute will feature stories and musical performances by some of the community members who found McCabe’s shop to be a place of support and inspiration. The performances have been prerecorded and include: Leigh Gibson of the Gibson Brothers, Kate Taylor, Dan Berggren, Mark Tolstrup, Chuck Lamb, John Kribs, Michael Eck, Brian Melick, Ria Curley, Angelina Valente, Pete Pashoukas and many more.

    Matt McCabe was an example of how a small business can have a huge impact. His goal was to raise the quality of life for everyone. That is why we’re celebrating him. He gave away instruments for fundraising raffles, he gave steep discounts to those in need, and he donated performances to make life a little brighter.

    Caffe Lena is a historic music venue located on downtown Saratoga Springs, opening up back in 1960. The café has seen a number of legendary act take it’s stage, from the likes of Bob Dylan in 1961 to recently Sawyer Fredricks in 2014. The Library of Congress has recognized Caffe Lena as “An American Treasure”; as well as being recognized by The Grammy Foundation for important contributions to the development of American music.

  • RIT set to host Rochester International Jazz Festival in July

    Just as we were losing hope in live music and festivals, it looks like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The Rochester International Jazz Festival is in the planning stages for their nineteenth edition which will be hosted on the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) campus.

    Planning is a challenge when we don’t know what the future will bring. We do know that this year’s Festival cannot go on as usual. The way we work and how we live has changed. We are very encouraged that vaccines are becoming more available. And if public health guidelines allow us to proceed this summer, we must adapt to this new environment, which will require a more flexible and spacious festival footprint. The RIT campus meets that criteria.

    The original date for the festival was June 19, 2020. Unfortunately COVID-19 brought upon a nationwide shutdown of crowded concerts. Because of this, Iacona and his partner John Nugent had to postpone the festival a few times until their latest decision, July 30 through Aug. 7. Over 200,000 people attend the annual nine day festival, but this year Lacona and Nugent are orchestrating a safe way to go about the event.

    “With Covid-19 and health consequences squarely on the minds of all event-goers around the world, we again find ourselves at a crossroads,” said Iacona and Nugent. “We are deeply grateful to our loyal patrons and sponsors and for countless messages of support as uncertainty prevails. Early February now brings us to a critical junction as we explore how to potentially present a festival, secure programming, and put together the plethora of logistics.”

    Throughout the course of the global pandemic, musicians have resorted to a different method of live performances. Live-streaming took to the internet in 2020 to provide a safe haven for those yearning to attend a live show. The Jazz Festival is the beginning to a new chapter for live music.

    The CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival was founded in 2002, with performances by over 1500 artists from all over the world. Through the years, those artists have performed more than 350 shows at 20 venues. Lacona is a community and business leader, while Nugent is an experienced tenor sax player and the artistic brains of RIJF, but their goals for the festival are the same.

    “The essence of our Festival has always been to bring our community together, drawn by the majesty of creative improvised music and celebrating as one entity,” said Nugent. “While this new location will be a change for us all, and the first time we are not downtown, we will still shine the musical spotlight on greater Rochester. We are committed to making every effort to include the City of Rochester and many of our downtown-based partners at this new location. We will create a festive atmosphere including a Jazz Street, assure the ability to walk between venues, and offer a shuttle service.”

  • The Hold Steady Announce Annual Multi-Night Event, The Weekender

    The Hold Steady will be holding a live-streamed event, The Weekender , from Brooklyn Bowl on Friday, March 5th and Saturday, March 6th primarily for UK and European fans.

    The Hold Steady is performing their annual multi-night Weekender event in an unprecedented way this year, bringing their European fans a virtual version of the recurring concert. Traditionally held in the renowned Electric Ballroom in Camden, London, this year it will be live-streamed from Brooklyn, New York. Both nights will commence at 8pm (20:00) GMT , 3pm EST (US). 

    At The Weekender, The Hold Steady will be performing two completely different sets, including fan favorites and new cuts from their upcoming album Open Door Policy, set for release on Friday, February 19th. Pre-order it here. Exclusive to The Weekender is a march bundle, unveiled in the weeks leading up to the main event. Following the final performance, The Weekender sets will be available on-demand for a limited time on March 6th.

  • Westcott Community Center and Joe Driscoll Announce their Vantastic Fundraiser

    Westcott Community Center announced a fundraiser for a new van that they call the Vantastic Fundraiser. The fundraiser is being put on by Joe Driscoll and will host a variety of performances via Facebook live on February 11, 2021 from 7 pm to 9 pm EST.

    The Westcott Community Center is a non-profit organization based in Syracuse, New York. Their mission statement is “Investing in their community by offering essential services and engaging programming to embrace the diverse needs of all.” The center is open 9am-4:30pm Monday through Friday for various programs and activities seven days a week.

    Westcott Community Center provides over 5,000 rides every year to older adults on Syracuse’s East Side and access to services necessary to lead full and healthy lives. People are dependent on “Westcott Community Center’s United We Ride Transportation Program” which makes it so they have access to  medical appointments, pharmacies, grocery stores, banks, and the Westcott Community Center congregate meals and Basic Needs Pantry services. All this would not all be possible without reliable transportation.

    Unfortunately, it has come time for the Westcott Community Center’s 14-passenger van, which was purchased in 2003, to be replaced. The new van will cost $45,000 in total. The online music event is an attempt to help the organization raise funds to purchase a new van. The fundraiser throughout their #WestcottCCRides initiative first kicked off August 15, 2020.

    The Vantastic Fundraiser will host performances from Joe Driscoll, William Nicholson, Billy Harrison, Jess Novak, Steve Scuteri, Riley Mahan, Larry Hoyt, Major Player, Benjamin Ellis, Colin Aberdeen, and Chris Chiesa. It can be viewed on Facebook live on both Joe Driscoll’s and Westcott Community Center’s pages on February 11, 2021 from 7 pm to 9 pm EST. Although the event is technically free, any donations to support the van would be greatly appreciated.

  • Celebrate Valentine’s Day Weekend with Albany Symphony and Composer Tyson Davis

    Composer Tyson Davis’ commissioned orchestral work, Distances, will be Performed by the Albany Symphony on its Valentine’s Weekend “Romantic Brahms” Concert on February 13, 7:30 pm EST.

    The Albany Symphony will be performing the orchestral work titled Distances by Tyson Davis. This 20-year-old composer has been writing music since age eight and currently attends the Juilliard School of Music. Tyson Davis has composed many pieces for small ensembles and solo instruments. As a child, Davis created works as he learned the piano. The instrument awoke the creativity within him, and he knew that music would be his one and only passionate path. His love for he process of seeing things grow propelled him into the world of composition. 

    In addition to Distances, music by composers Sir William Walton and Johannes Brahms will be performed by the Albany Symphony. The event will be streamed live from Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs. There will be a pre-concert talk at 7:00 pm and a post-concert question and answer session with the artists for season subscribers.

    “I am so excited to share this program with our community, featuring three extraordinary composers just starting out on their glorious careers. We are very proud to introduce Tyson Davis and his wonderful new work. He is an immensely gifted composer. In addition, we are thrilled to present a virtually unknown major early work by Johannes Brahms, the original version of his First Serenade, in a version that simply may never have been played or heard before!  And Walton’s wildly charming, witty, surreal narrated work, “Facade,” is one of my very favorite works from the early 20th Century,“ said Music Director David Alan Miller.

    The Albany Symphony was founded in 1930 and is now highly acclaimed with many ASCAP and Grammy awards. David Miller, the director for 27 seasons, fostered a community of diverse musical compositions. With numerous education programs, the Albany Symphony empowers youth to tackle issues of diversity and self-expression through songwriting, improvisation, and teamwork.

    The 2020-2021 season continues through the American Music Festival in June. Concerts will be live and virtual, with the ability to purchase access online or by calling the Albany Symphony Box Office at 518-694-3300. Subscribers are also invited to attend a pre-concert chat and a post-concert, real-time “talk-back” session with guest composers, soloists, and Maestro Miller.
