  • Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Announce Five Summer Dates, Starting in Lafayette, NY

    Pigeons Playing Ping Pong announces a five show summer tour running through both June and July across multiple states. The tour will start on June 18, 2021 in New York and end on July 16, 2021 in New Hampshire. 

    Pigeons Playing Ping Pong are a funk band from Baltimore, Maryland that started back in 2009. The lineup is currently made up of Greg Ormont on vocals and guitar, Jeremy Schon on guitar and vocals, Ben Carrey on bass and vocals and Alex Petropulos on drums. They released their first album back in 2010 titled Funk E P. They currently have five studio albums with their most recent album titled Presto was released in 2020.

    The tour will start in Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards in Lafayette, New York and will host shows on both June 18 and 19. The band will make it’s next stop on June 26 for a show at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut. They will move on with the tour and on July 10th they will stop at Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Roseland, Virginia. The five show tour will wrap up on July 16 in Northlands in Swanzey, New Hampshire.

    All the events will require attendees to be seated in socially distant pods. All shows will adhere to all state and local guidelines regarding masks and social distancing. They will be one of the first few bands to perform at the recently constructed Westville Music Bowl which is the fourth stop on their tour which was formerly home of the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament. Their last stop on the tour at Northlands (Formerly Drive-In Live) in Swanzey was originally a drive-in theatre. The owners transformed the scenic, mountainside location into a thriving, pod-style concert field. Northlands also expanded the operation, promising “food trucks, beer and wine, improved sound and lights, and much more…”.

    An artist pre-sale will commence on Wednesday, March 17th at 12 PM ET, followed by a public on sale on Friday, March 19th at 12 PM ET here.

    With live music being halted for so long due to COVID-19, the news of live summer tours taking place this summer is exciting and gives hope that soon regular live music can become a reality again.   • Tune in March 20 for Love, New York: The Pandemic Anniversary Music Festival

    Love, New York, a virtual concert fundraiser will take place on the one year anniversary of New York City declaring a shelter in place for the COVID-19 pandemic. Featured musicians include Rich Medina, Paris Monster, and James Casey. It will stream live on March 20th, 2020 at 7 PM EST.

    A year later, the end of pandemic is far closer, yet music still needs relief and artistic outlet. Love, New York is comprised of creatives, visionaries, musicians, street performers, dancers, Broadway artists, and lovers from New York.

    The festival is organized by Sound Mind Collective, a Brooklyn based community organization founded in 2017 by Katherine Powell (KP Artist Management), Chris St. Hilaire (musician, The London Souls, Sinkane, Doyle Bramhall II) and Nikhil P. Yerawadekar (musician, Nikhil P. Yerawadekar & Low Mentality). Sound Mind Collective’s goal is to connect independent artists with local communities to encourage growth through social justice advocacy, policy change, and much more.

    The proceeds from Love, New York will be allocated amongst the performers and independent music venues that are at risk of closing indefinitely as the virus continues to keep doors closed.

  • Barenaked Ladies announce April 17 & 18 Concert Stream

    If you’re free on the 17th and 18th of April, the Barenaked Ladies have announced a new concert stream event, “Flip N’ Hits With NBL: A Night of Monster Jams on Pandemic Proportions.” Taking place at 9 pm EDT and 6 pm PDT with an additional special encore at 8 pm on the 18th, the virtual hour-long show will be available for viewers across the globe, promising high-powered energy and fun.

    For the first time in 30 years, the Barenaked Ladies are making a return to the historic Danforth Music Hall in Toronto for this event. The setlist for the event contains a variety of fan-favorites, including “If I Had $1,000,000,” “One Week,” and “Pinch Me.” Tickets for the event start at $15 and can be purchased here. The show will be unavailable to rewind or view once it’s over, so grab your tickets ASAP.

  • Stream Joe Bonamassa Live at Austin City Limits on April 1st

    Guitarist Joe Bonamassa announces a one-night-only livestream concert at the iconic venue, Austin City Limits on April 1st, at 9PM EST.

    The livestream, broadcasting worldwide, will raise money for musicians and artists in need. Bonamassa is returning to his blues-rock roots with a power trio performance and a setlist curated by his fans.

  • Flushing Town Hall announce their Jazz-packed tribute for Women’s History Month

    Flushing Town Hall has announced their Jazz-packed tribute for Women’s History Month. The tribute will take place on March 26, 2021 7PM EST and is being called “Songbirds,” a virtual tribute to Minnie Riperton, Shirley Horn, and Joni Mitchell by the Mala Waldron Quartet.

    Flushing Town Hall is known particularly for its long history of presenting strong jazz programming. It has been able to expand its audience across the globe through virtual programming since the COVID-19 pandemic closed its doors one year ago, like most music venues around the world. Although audiences are still not permitted into the venue, local performers are now slowly being able to return to the stage for live-streamed performances. The cultural nonprofit also has increased its collaboration with other performance venues to bring additional programming to its fans.

    The Mala Waldron Quartet features Mala Waldron who is a pianist and vocalist who has a unique technical alacrity and sensitivity that isn’t widely known. She is the daughter of Jazz Icon Mal Waldron. She has performed all over the world at prestigious music festivals including in Belgium, Russia, Belarus & China, Taiwan and Malaysia. Waldron has performed on some of NYC’s most prestigious stages, including the Iridium Jazz Club, the Blue Note, and the Jazz Standard, and at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. The rest of the quartet is made up of Steve Salerno on guitar, Michael T.A. Thompson on drums and Gene Torres and bass. They will perform “Songbirds”—a beautiful journey into a not-so-distant past made popular by Minnie Riperton, Shirley Horn and Joni Mitchell. It will be filled with memorable music and songs. 

    The concert will be performed at Flushing Town Hall’s theatre and will be streamed live for audiences at home in celebration of  Women’s History Month. It will be available on the Flushing Town Hall’s YouTube channel. This performance is ticketed performance and requires a prior purchase of $5.00, plus a $1.00 convenience fee to view the performance online. Audience members can submit questions at any time during the performance for a live Q&A which will be moderated by Flushing Town Hall’s Jazz Producer Clyde Bullard after the show.

  • The Supper Club Returns to The Hollow Bar + Kitchen in April

    On March 10, tickets for The Supper Club at the Hollow Bar + Kitchen in Downtown Albany go on sale, ahead of the series’ return in April.

    Michael and Dora Philip opened The Hollow Bar + Kitchen in 2013 and its unique setup and great location caused it to gain notoriety. The establishment received four stars for its restaurant and has gained notoriety for live music held throughout the week.

    When the pandemic hit, The Hollow faced a shift in business and was shut down for five months. It reopened in August 2020 with indoor and outdoor dining at reduced capacity. While the restaurant was able to open, its other half, live music, was still missing and it took a toll.

    The Supper Club shows were originally launched in October 2020 by Guthrie/Bell Productions The shows gave local artists an opportunity to perform and it also gave a boost to the establishment. The first performance was from local musician Girl Blue on Oct 9, 2020, and continued for four more Fridays. The audience is socially distanced and the Hollow abided by guidelines to ensure safety for every show. However, they took a break in November after coronavirus infections increased.

    Following the winter hiatus from the surge, the Supper Club at the Hollow Bar + Kitchen resumes this April and May. The tickets go on sale on Wednesday, March 10 with a full lineup for April. The shows begin on April 2 with Justin Henricks, Beau Sausser and Bill Carbone. The rest of the performances for the month consist of local artists. The performers for May will be announced soon.

    Tickets are sold for tables of two or four guests. For a table for two the price is $30 and a table of four is $60. The price for the tickets is for the performance only, guests are able to order food and drinks from the menu. However, according to NYS regulations, attendees must order food if they order alcohol. Every show consists of seatings from 6-6:30pm, a short first set at 6:30pm, a time to eat from 7-8pm and a longer set at the end from 8-9:30pm. The tickets are sold through Eventbrite and serve as the reservations because no tables will be sold at the door.

    Attendees must adhere to all social distancing guidelines and masks are required when not seated at your table. Reservations are required through a ticket purchase; no tables will be sold at the door the night of the show so staff can properly plan for the number of guests.

    Kitsuné Musique, shesaid.so and Bandsintown announces a 24-hour mix in celebration of the International Women’s Day on March 8, 2021 starting at 7AM EST until 5AM EST on March 9, 2021. The performances will stream live on Bandsintown’s Twitch channel and will be available the next day on Kitsuné Musique’s Soundcloud channel.

    The 24-hour audio mix compilation is an attempt by the companies Kitsuné Musique, shesaid.so and Bandsintown to help empower women all around the world through music for international women’s day. Not only will they provide this platform for artists to perform for the celebration but also the shesaid.so x Kitsuné Women’s Day Fund was created. 

    shesaid.so x Kitsuné Women’s Day Fund will provide hardship payments of up to €250 each to freelancers, contractors and artists in the independent music industry whose income has been severely affected due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. The fund will support creators and executives from the shesaid.so community that have lost committed income or have not been able to secure novel paid work in 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic.

    The performance will include appearances from, YonYon, DJ KADE, Banga, stephseeks, Whitney AbstraKt Shacia Päyne Marley, Sahar Habibi, Sujin, Butta B,  ShioriyBradshaw, and JI NA.  Bandsintown’s Twitch channel where the live performances will be appearing can be found here on international women’s day. The 24-hour audio mix compilation will also be available on Kitsuné Musique’s Soundcloud channel at 7AM EST the next day which can be found here.

  • Club Helsinki Hudson Announces Virtual Open Mic Best of EXTRAVAGANZA

    Club Helsinki Hudson announces it’s virtual open mic best of EXTRAVAGANZA night highlighting a full evening of curated performances of favorite video submissions from this last “pandemic year” on March 16, 2021 at 7PM. This will be the one year anniversary ‘virtual-style’ for the open mic night.

    Club Helsinki Hudson, located in Hudson, NY and closed back in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic along with The Restaurant at Helsinki Hudson and their event space. The open mic night has been a tradition since the creation of the venue more than 20 years ago. 

    Cameron Melville, co-owner of Helsinki has been the host for the open mic night for many years. He has found a way over the years to keep the well known and loved weekly event a good experience for both performers and online audiences. A whole year later and the Helsinki virtual open-mic has become a vital, well attended weekly offering, about to celebrate one year of virtual streaming— 52 shows hosting nearly 800 performances with an audience of thousands.

    Filmmaker Randall Martin of Martin’s Digital Media, has leant his hand as producer on the project.  Melville speaks on the project in the press release saying, “The authenticity of our submissions really blows my mind. As well as our wonderful regulars, we now get submissions from all over the country, all over the world.”

    This best of EXTRAVAGANZA will host some of the best performances that have come in over the year. The open mic night will feature poetry, performance art, music, interview, pandemic journaling and On-the-Street videos, political marches and celebrations from an extraordinary year.   • Patti Smith to honor Bob Dylan with Poetry and Song

    Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, just across the Hudson River from Saugerties, will host their inaugural, outdoor Spring Festival. Joining them will be Patti Smith and her longtime collaborator Tony Shanahan, who will offer tribute to Bob Dylan ahead of his upcoming 80th birthday, through original songs and poetry as well as works by Dylan, on May 22, 2021.

    On Instagram, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park said they were “Thrilled to have poet performer Patti Smith participate in our upcoming spring festival.”

    Smith and Dylan have a longstanding relationship going back to the 1960s, and Smith even performed at Dylan’s Nobel Prize for Literature ceremony in 2016 in his absence.

    Additional offerings for the late-May festival will the include works of dance, culinary arts and sculpture.

    Artistic Director of Kaatsbaan, Stella Abrera, explained what the event will entail.

    The name Kaatsbaan, derived from the Dutch language for ‘a playing field,’ will embody our Spring Festival in every way. We have always been a haven away from the constraints of city life where artists can realize their most ambitious projects. In May, the public will have the opportunity to see this in action, as we create immersive experiences across our fields where they can safely encounter an unparalleled range of artists and styles.

    Following the success of a 2020 Summer Festival, held despite challenges faced at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first Spring Festival will take place on May 22. During last year’s nine-week Summer Festival, Kaatsbaan was able to support over 100 New York-based artists, as noted by executive director Sonja Kostich.

    This spring, the greatly expanded program will not only support artists in dance but also across music, poetry, visual and culinary arts, as well as the invaluable individuals who work behind the scenes to make a festival come to life. Kaatsbaan is also committed to the health and vibrancy of our local economy, with the Spring Festival providing opportunities for local economic growth that includes exciting new partnerships.

  • The Orchestra Now to Livestream Two Free Concerts From the Fisher Center at Bard College

    The Orchestra Now (TŌN) will continue its Spring 2021 season by live streaming two concerts March 7 and March 20, with conductors Andrés Rivas and Zachary Schwartzman.

    Works on both concerts, ranging from rarely performed music for string orchestra to Vivaldi’s Concerto in G minor, Pärt’s memorial for composer Benjamin Britten and Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite after Bizet’s beloved opera, will be prefaced with brief remarks by TŌN musicians.

    On March 7, assistant conductor Andrés Rivas will lead the orchestra in four works for strings. The english composer Bruce Montgomery will have his Concertino for String Orchestra performed. Montgomery’s work ranges over several genres, including soundtracking for the infamous British comedy series Carry On. There will also be works from composers Victor Herbert, Ingvar Lidholm, and Andrés Gaos.

    On March 20, resident conductor Zachary Schwartzmen will lead an arrangement from Bizet‘s classic opera Carmen by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin in advance of his 90th birthday in December 2022. Shchedrin’s works are known for their avant-garde and neoclassist sensibilities as well as folk and jazz sounds. His Carmen suite was intended for his wife, who is a ballerina. Conductor and Grammy-nominated recording artist Zachary Schwartzman will offer musical insights on the concert in a Zoom seminar on Thursday, March 11 at 7 PM EST. You can RSVP HERE.

    The Orchestra Now is a group of 72 young, vivacious musicians from 14 different countries. All members share a love for orchestral music, keeping it relevant in the 21st century by sharing their personal insights and artistic capabilities in a welcoming environment. Conductor, educator, and music historian Leon Botstein, whom The New York Times said “draws rich, expressive playing from the orchestra,” founded TŌN in 2015 as a graduate program at Bard College, where he is also president. The Orchestra Now offers both a three-year master’s degree program in Curatorial, Critical, and Performance Studies and a two-year advanced certificate in Orchestra Studies.
