  • The Roots ‘Do You Want More?!!!??!’ Deluxe Edition Out Now

    The album that solidified Neo-Soul/Hip Hop outfit, The Roots, as a force in the hip hop realm is being redistributed. Considered a staple of the Jazz-rap subgenre, Do You Want More?!!!??!, achieved cult-like status despite not selling an immense amount of units. The group’s major-label debut was released over 26 years ago on January, 17 1995 and didn’t reach Gold status until 2015, over 20 years later. 

    Nonetheless, the album’s merits are never to be questioned. In an era of machismo and increasingly violent tales in hip hop, the Philadelphia bred ensemble managed to entrench themselves in music history in their own way. Their blend of live instrumentation, story-telling along with the introspective and technically proficient lyrics of Black Thought and Malik B. made them a first of their kind.

    Led once again by, MC Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter and drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the Philadelphia rap crew are going back to where it began with a 3LP, 4LP and a digital deluxe collection of Do You Want More?!!!??! to be released on June 25, 2021 via Geffen/Ume records. 

    This deluxe edition draws from the original recordings and features 18 bonus tracks curated by Questlove, ranging from unreleased records to songs that have never made it to streaming platforms. The 3LP deluxe vinyl edition features five bonus tracks — “Proceed II Feat. Roy Ayers”, “Proceed III”, “Proceed IV (AJ Shine Mix)”, “Proceed V (Beatminerz Mix),” along with five remixes of “Silent Treatment,” with the “Street Mix” made available for streaming before the project’s release.

    Also included, is a 24-page booklet featuring images taken by Mpozi Tolbert, essays by Questlove and Black Thought as well as track-by-track commentary. The 4LP edition features all of the above plus another additional eight bonus tracks; “In Your Dreams Kid (I’m Every MC),” “The Ultimate (Original ’94 Version),” “……(dot dot dot…on & on),” “Pffat Time,” “Swept Away (Original Draft),” “It’s Coming,“”Lazy Afternoon (Alternate Version),” and two remix versions of “Distortion To Static.” 

    By way of their innovative and breakthrough blend of hip hop and other black genres, The Roots have cemented themselves as an important part of rap’s evolution, distinguising themselves as the first true hip hop band. Their success as artists have also spawned other opportunities. They also serve as the house band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and held the same role on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon from 2009 to 2014.

  • Queer Pop and Melodic Chaos: Arthur Moon Releases Newest Single “Chaos! Chaos! Chaos!”

    Standing at only a mere 4 days old, “Chaos! Chaos! Chaos!” the new single from Arthur Moon has already amassed thousands of streams and landed on playlists alongside huge artists like The Japanese House, Sufjan Stevens, and St. Vincent. Before the mark of their one year anniversary, they earned themselves an NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert.

    It’s clear this band is praised for their excellence, and their new single hits the mark the very same. 

    The Brooklyn avant-pop group, led by composer and singer Lora-Faye Åshuvud with collaborators Cale Hawkins, Martin D. Fowler, Dave Palazola and Aviva Jaye, released the single while announcing their new album to be released in the fall under the same name: “Chaos! Chaos! Chaos!“

    And that’s just what the single is: a beautiful and haunting chaotic musical masterpiece. Boarding on the genres of indie and electropop with elements from jazz and a choral influence, Arthur Moon is able to seamlessly meld these opposing musical soundscapes in a captivating and genius way.

    Not a single time during my first time listening through to the single did I know where the next note would land. Against dissonant to resolving vocals and piano vamping that explored multiple keys sometimes within the same measures, there was a sense of peace in the chaos. The droning electronic sounds complimented rather than clashed with the more organic instruments.

    The vocals evolved from melodic singing to speak-singing with a metallic overlay, creating chaos in the mix. But never did the chaos not resolve, paving the way for a beautiful jazz piano solo overtop the synth drone.

    Rather than staying in the confines of one genre, Arthur Moon seems to reconceptualize boxing artists into one genre over another. They explore so many different soundscapes that at one point, I scrapped the idea of attempting to label them as alt or pop, instead praising their ability to operate outside of anything I’ve ever heard before.

    “Chaos! Chaos! Chaos!,” sung by lead Ashuvud who identifies as queer, was released for Pride Month. The music video captures two queer women dancing alone together in the purple light, expressing themselves and their love unequivocally. Their music shows the same queering of pop, electronic, and experimental music. Ashuvud is not afraid to defy traditionalism, bringing a unique approach to timbre, melody, and rhythm throughout all of her pieces.

    The unpredictable nature of Arthur Moon’s music alludes to a rejection of heteronormativity within music and a huge step towards the acceptance of queer music which is so very crucially important, particularly in a month honoring our LBGTQIA ancestors. Following the accolades from monumental influences in the music industry, including Billboard and NPR Music, it’s clear Arthur Moon is on the verge of blowing up. If you want to secure bragging rights of knowing their name and following their music before they’re the household name they’re bound to become, stream their new song asap! 

  • Jazz Artist Senri Oe releases Music Video for Upcoming Album “Letter To N.Y.”

    Pop star turned jazz artist Senri Oe has announced the release of his new official music video for “Out of Chaos.” The song is the first track out of his forthcoming seventh studio jazz album, Letter To N.Y.

    As a pop Japanese superstar for two decades during the 80s and 90s, Senri Oe did a complete turnabout on his career after deciding to focus on what was important in his life. It was his first love: jazz. Senri left Japan and his legion of pop fans and headed to New York to study at the School of Jazz at The New School. He proceeded to launch his recording career with his debut album Boys Mature Slow via PND Records in 2012. 

    Letter to N.Y. is very impressionistic in its portrayal of New York music and culture through the lens of the pandemic but heard together, the songs reveal a unique narrative story. It’s about the brokenness and collapse of the old way of life, yet with the hope that as we move into the new normal, restoration and renewal are also possible. The former world is over, so now we have to open a new door and take everything to a brave new level moving forward.

    Composed and produced by Senri completely during quarantine, the 11-track album, Letter to N.Y., is a special homage expressing Senri’s sincere love for New York City. The album captures the eclectic array of the Big Apple’s musical energies.

    Senri, who first started on classical piano, and whose influences are both bebop and Miles Davis’ electronic jazz fusion of the 70s and 80s, was inspired by the same electric keyboard and organ sounds on Letter to N.Y.  It follows Senri’s 2020 album Hmmm, and a trio session with drummer Ari Hoenig and bassist Matt Clohesy which hit the Top 40 on JazzWeek and reached number 24 on the Roots Radio Jazz’ Top 50 chart.

    Senri’s other albums include the full big band with Spooky Hotel (2013), Collective Scribble (2015), and Answer July (2016), which featured jazz vocal greats Sheila Jordan, Theo Bleckmann, Becca Stevens, and Lauren Kinhan of the Grammy-winning vocal ensemble New York Voices.

    Oe’s love for New York is simply contagious. It is not only apparent in his latest album, but also in messages he has given to his fans. Through musical synergies of jazz melodies, riffs, and rhythms, Oe further expresses his passion for the New York music scene with others. Both his story and his songs are inspiring for those with similar ambitions and drive.

    When you wake up in the morning, you can hear the voice of birds, and when you open the window, the sound of the wind is soothing. They all turn into music in this room where I live now.

    At the beginning of the pandemic, I was at a loss in a tremendously dark tunnel. But after I learned how to live day by day, mindfully, I started to find the birth of soul-shaking events which I have never experienced each day.

    Music is at every corner of the street. Honesty, a sense of humor, and the no-pretense kindness fill everywhere.

    I am in love with New York more than ever.

  • Guernsey’s “A Century of Music” Auction now underway

    Personal instruments, rock memorabilia, and music-inspired items from Woodstock Festival, Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Beatles, and many more will hit the block in a mostly unreserved online auction. The “A Century of Music” auction hosted by Guernsey’s will be held over June 23-24

    Fans will have the chance to bid on guitars owned by Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Bo Diddley, and Allen Collins, as well as a Daisy Rock Guitar autographed at the 2006 Grammys by Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban. 

    Other instruments that will hit the block include Bill Clinton’s saxophone that he played at his Inaugural Ball, which is signed, Paul Butterfield and James Cotton’s harmonicas, and Chick Corea and Elton John’s pianos. 

    There is also a rare 18th century harp and the remarkable Meisel Collection, with more than 500 vintage violins and bows, banjos, ukuleles, mandolins and autoharps up for grabs. Other personal items include Billie Holiday’s gown, Buddy Holly’s performance jacket, original art work by John Lennon, the only known test pressing of Miles Davis playing “Meaning of the Blues” at Carnegie Hall, original Robert Freeman Beatles’ photos, memorabilia from the Fontaine Collection, the front doors from the Chelsea Hotel, and more available for the first time at this very special, music-inspired auction.

    The most famed concert in history – Woodstock – also plays a big part in this auction. Guernsey’s will offer a variety of one of a kind memorabilia and art from the 1969 festival, including a hand painted directional map, sections of the stage, and photos from the official photographer. Many of the hand-painted panels by famed artists including Robert Indiana created during the 25th anniversary Woodstock Concert to restrain the 500,000 attendees will also be up for bid.

    There are a pair of control room monitor speakers from Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios on West 8th Street in New York. They were given to the original designer, who then loaned them to the Experienced Music Project, created by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, which is now known as the Museum of Pop Culture (or MoPOP). These will be sold side-by-side with Paul Butterfield’s Blues Band speakers that were on the stage at Woodstock, and the stage speakers used by Lynyrd Skynyrd prior to the band’s tragic 1970s plane crash.

    Jason Becker, a virtuoso musician, songwriter and composer who is the world’s longest living survivor of amyotrophic literal sclerosis (ALS), is selling his guitars to raise funds to battle this debilitating disease, including his much-beloved “Numbers” guitar that has been played by several noted musicians, including KISS’ Paul Stanley, and Jason and Eddie Van Halen.

  • NYC’s Blue Note Jazz Club is Reopened by Grammy Winner Robert Glasper

    R&B genius and four-time Grammy winner Robert Glasper celebrates the epic return of live music by performing at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in NYC. The celebrity-packed grand reopening ran until 2:30am on Friday, June 18th. You can watch a recap of the night here.

    Glasper was joined onstage by comedic icons Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle. Musicians included Questlove, Common, Keyon Harrold, and Talib Kweli. You can watch the performance of these artists here. Many celebrities were spotted in the audience, such as Zoe Kravitz, Jon Hamm, Susan Sarandon, Lupita Nyong’o, Don Cheadle, Maurice Brown and poet Amir Sulaiman.

    The Blue Note Jazz Club opened in 1981 and has been one of the most premier jazz clubs in the world ever since. It is a gathering place for listeners to enjoy some of America’s best music. The club fosters innovation and progression while preserving the history and traditions of jazz. Clubs like Blue Note have been an integral part of NYC entertainment for years, and the coronavirus pandemic led them to shut down for months. The recent reopening of the clubs has been incredibly exciting for both performers and jazz fans across the state.

    Blue Note is celebrating the grand reopening of NYC jazz clubs by presenting the Blue Note Jazz Festival that will run throughout the summer. Many up-and-coming jazz, soul, hip-hop, R&B, and funk artists will be featured. The energy between the walls of Blue Note this summer will remind attendees of the gaping hole that was left this year when jazz clubs were forced to close.   • The Campbell Brothers To Headline 2nd Annual Cider, Blues & BBQ Showcase

    The Stone Ridge Orchard in Stone Ridge, New York kicks off their summer season with Cider, Blues & BBQ, a live blues review with New York State-based blues musicians. This year’s festivities will feature The Campbell Brothers, Alexis P. Suter and The Robert Hill Band on Saturday, June 19.

    Opening the show will be The Robert Hill Band. Hill is an award-winning songwriter, vocalist, and master guitarist. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Robert now calls New York home. His band is known for their original, autobiographical blues music, previously performing internationally from NYC to Spain.


    Headlining the show is the Campbell Brothers, an American sacred-steel gospel group from Rochester, New York. The ensemble features prominent pedal steel guitars and soulful singing. Their groove is infectious and sure to get the audience up and dancing together!


    At the end of the night, Brooklyn native Alexis P. Suter will usher in the sunset with her hearty voice. A sousaphone player and church singer since the age of four, Alexis was the first African American woman signed to Epic/Sony Records. The award-winning musician will grace the stage with a selection of songs from her extensive six-album catalog. Her deep, passionate vocals are goosebump inducing.

    To accompany the blues, there will be food on-site available from Hudson Valley’s The Grille Wagon. Smoked BBQ staples like pulled pork sandwiches, brisket, BBQ chicken, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, and a host of other locally-sourced dishes are on the menu. The farm’s tasting room will be open for cider and wine tastings, as well as their roadside farm market that provides freshly baked goods and local products available for purchase.

    We’re so grateful to showcase these amazing musicians on our farm, and we welcome the community to soak up everything the farm has to offer.

    In addition to the evening show and BBQ, the 115-acre farm offers a chance to visit with the resident alpacas, pigs, and sheep. Guests are even able to for a hike up to the 350-year old oak tree on the farm, full of scenic Catskill Mountain views.

  • Levin Brothers’ Vaccinating Rhythm Tour Announces Bearsville Theater Show

    Woodstock’s Tony and Pete Levin bring their Levin Brothers Vaccinating Rhythm tour to the Bearsville Theater on June 26, 2021, as part of a select tour of shows. The duo was founded by Pete and Tony Levin in 2013, after 5 decades of performing and recording with the titans of music in jazz, fusion, rock, pop, and world music. Now, they are set to tour New York alongside an outstanding supporting jazz lineup at the Bearsville Theater.

    After guesting on each other’s projects, the Levin Brothers finally decided to create their own jazz band. To date, the Levin Brothers have released 2 albums – the self-titled first album in 2014, and the follow-up live album Special Delivery in 2017. The band has toured all over the USA, Mexico, El Salvador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Japan.

    Since graduating from the Eastman School of Music, Tony Levin, one of the most recorded bassists in the history of music, has become bass and Chapman Stick voice for Peter Gabriel and King Crimson. He has played on notable recordings for icons John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Carly Simon, Buddy Rich, Gary Burton, and Chuck Mangione. Currently, tours and records with Stick Men, Levin Brothers, King Crimson, and Peter Gabriel.

    After graduating from the Julliard School, Pete Levin became a synthesizer specialist among New York City recording studio scene. Over the years, he has graced hundreds of jazz and pop recordings, performing with many artists including the following: Gil Evans, Jimmy Giuffre, David Sanborn, Annie Lennox, Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius, Lenny White, and Paul Simon.

    A veteran of the New York Jazz scene, Jeff ‘Siege’ Siegel has become a who’s-who of jazz artists. A member of Sir Roland Hanna’s Trio from 1994 to 1999, he has performed and recorded with jazz legends including Ron Carter, Kenny Burrell, Lee Shaw, Jack DeJohnette, Benny Golson, Frank Foster, Helen Merrill, and Mose Allison.

    Additionally, contemporary Jazz guitarist Jeff Ciampa has recorded and toured with some of the most well-known jazz, pop, and rock stars, including the following: Harry Belafonte, Jon Lucien, Dave Matthews, Mark Egan, Bill Evans, Al MacDowell, Ornette Coleman, Lew Soloff, and Lenny White.

  • No Snark in These Puppies: Bob Lanzetti and Zach Brock in Rochester

    Two members of Snarky Puppy, violinist Zach Brock and guitarist Bob Lanzetti, closed out a quick run of shows as a duo Sunday night, June 13, in Rochester at Lovin’ Cup.

    Lovin’ Cup always boasts immaculate sound, and when the seats and tables are out, it provides a nice intimate setting. Both were welcome for the rich and beautiful music Brock and Lanzetti were laying down this night. Being a free show, a disengaged crowd might be expected. However, everyone in the room was completely rapt, respectful and there for no other reason than to squeeze out just a bit more of that sweet live music that has been so absent from the world for way too long.

    Unlike their regular gig with Snarky Puppy, this music was less booty shaking and more ear tickling, less dance party more dinner party. Each a master of his instrument, together they could interweave enough complex notes to create swells of sound and also bring it down to simple taps and plucks. Brock would put away the bow to create rhythmic “bass” lines for Lanzetti to play a whirlwind solo over, and Lanzetti would likewise settle into a groove for Brock to take the violin to eclectic heights.

    Their dynamic range wasn’t left to just how they played, but also what. The evenings program covered chamber music, jazz, world, Americana, blues and even some choice tributes. Many artists cover the great Gillian Welch, but few do so as an instrumental. They took her “Elvis Presley Blues” for a ride early in the first set, which proved to be a highlight. Brock’s violin conjured up all the emotion of Welch’s voice in such a way that the lyrics still pushed through. Later, on a tune dedicated to Steve Lacy, Brock summoned different tones from his instrument, resurrecting Lacy’s early adoption of the soprano sax as an improvisation vehicle.

    Both musicians were open and friendly from the stage, telling stories and imparting musical knowledge that furthered the attentive audience’s enjoyment and created a connection between the two.

    We’ve been missing Sunday shows for over 15 months. Those are the ones they say to never miss, right? There’s just no better way to finish or start a week. Zach Brock and Bob Lanzetti fit the bill, snark or not.

  • Flushing Town Hall Announces First in Person Event Since COVID-19

    Flushing Town Hall announced their first in person event since the onset of COVID-19 in March of 2020 that will have a 42 person capacity. The event will host the Queens Jazz Orchestra Ensemble on Friday, June 18 at 7PM EST for a live tribute to the late NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath.

    NEA Jazz Master and former Music Director of Flushing Town Hall’s Queens Jazz Orchestra Jimmy Heath passed away on January 19, 2020 at the age of 93, he passed the baton to his protégé Antonio Hart. This event is in honor of Jimmy Heath and his legacy. The Queens Jazz Orchestra Ensemble performing at Flushing Town Hall for this event and is comprised of six amazing musicians who all had a personal connection to Master Heath and are celebrating his legacy:  Antonio Hart who is the Leader and Saxophonist, Freddie Hendrix on Trumpet, Steve Davis on Trombone, Jeb Patton on Piano, David Wong on Acoustic Bass, Vince Ector on Drums. 

    This will be the first small live audience at Flushing Town Hall since March of 2020 with the onset of Covid-19. The event will observe Covid-19 safety measures that include mask requirements and social distancing. The concert will be simultaneously live streamed for a virtual audience at home for those who can’t make it in person. 

    Antonio Hart spoke about the event saying, “Due to Covid, the Queens Jazz Orchestra has not been able to perform together, but I am delighted to bring a smaller unit of members of the ensemble to Flushing Town Hall to celebrate Master Heath.”

    The event is also in honor of Flushing Town Hall’s 42nd anniversary, 42 in-person tickets are available ($15/$12 members), and unlimited virtual tickets ($10/$7 members) for audiences at home.   • Lincoln Center’s Wynton Marsalis Releases New Symphony

    Wynton Marsalis, the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, recently released a recording of “Blues Symphony (Symphony No. 2)” for The Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Cristian Macelaru. This is the second symphony from Marsalis, who is a Pulitzer Prize-winning director.

    The symphony has seven beautiful movements, taking the listener through American history and folklore. There is a movement reflecting the beginnings of jazz in New Orleans as well as one that portrays the big city soundscape of the Great Migration. It is a celebration of American blues and is a kaleidoscopic history of music in our country.

    Marsalis is the genius behind the symphony, and his imagination shines through in his work for The Philadelphia Orchestra. On the recording, Marsalis says, “The blues helps you remember back before the troubles on hand and in mind…and they carry you on the wings of angels to a timeless higher ground.” His music is powerful and is an exquisite ode to the blues and America’s musical roots.

    This recording was from a live performance in 2019 in Verizon Hall at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. It builds upon the legacies of Scott Joplin, James P. Johnson, George Gershwin, and other American masters.
