  • Tom Petty Has Fans on the Edge of Their Wildflowers

    In 1994 Tom Petty released Wildflowers, a staple album from the time period and still to this day. Originally it was conceptualized as a double album. Petty is now considering performing Wildflowers the way it was originally intended to be heard.

    He recently sat with Rolling Stone for an interview and talked about how he’d like to regroup the Heartbreakers to play Wildflowers in 2017.

    After 20 plus years fans are still eagerly waiting for an expanded version of Wildflowers. Petty has released some outtakes from sessions on the soundtrack She`s The One that came out in 1996. “I think I put four of the [Wildflowers outtakes] on the She’s The One soundtrack just to fill out the album,” Petty explained.

    Tom Petty has been against full album performances in the past but recently he’s changed his tune. “I’ve changed my mind because nobody has ever done something like this where you’re previewing the second part of a never-released album,” Petty revealed. “How often does that happen? It’s old and new at the same time.”

    As for now there are no Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers dates booked as the rocker focuses on Mudcrutch. In the meantime, Petty fans can look forward to the possibility of an expanded release of his 1995 classic with a tour to hopefully follow.

  • Bernie Worrell Passes Away at 72

    Bernie Worrell, keyboardist for Parliament/Funkadelic and the Talking Heads, passed away yesterday at the age of 72.

    In a post on Facebook, Worrell’s wife, Judie, posted “Bernie transitioned Home to The Great Spirit. Rest in peace, my love — you definitely made the world a better place. Till we meet again, vaya con Dios.” This news came nearly six months following her announcement of his stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis.

    Born G. Bernard Worrell, Jr. in Long Branch, New Jersey in 1944 and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey, Worrell began taking piano lessons at age three and wrote his first concerto at eight. He studied at the Juilliard School and went on to receive a degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1967. The school awarded him an honorary Doctor of Music degree in May.

    Worrell, also known as the “Wizard of Woo,” was best known for his work with Parliament/Funkadelic, to which he is credited with giving the futuristic sound through the expert use of the Moog synthesizer. As one of the longest standing members of the band, he was among the 15 members inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He became a de facto member of the Talking Heads through much of the ’80s, appearing on their studio album Speaking in Tongues and the much-heralded live album and concert film Stop Making Sense. More recently, he had formed the Bernie Worrell Orchestra, which featured a rotating lineup of musicians performing originals and songs from his past work with Parliament/Funkadelic and the Talking Heads.

  • Phish Releases Live Bait Vol. 12

    Live Bait Vol. 12 is a ten track collection of treasured Phish tracks released to help phans survive the building anticipation before Summer Tour 2016, which kicked off Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. It is a tradition that archivist Kevin Shapiro has kept going for years, each one featuring tracks from the cities that the group will hit on its tour.

    This year’s edition has an especially notable, almost 30 minute long, “Mike’s Song> Simple> Mike’s Song> Tela> Weekapaug Groove” from Onondaga War Memorial Auditorium in Syracuse on Nov. 4, 1994; as well as, “Piper>Gotta Jibboo” from SPAC on June 19, 2004, which is a little over 40 minutes long. In fact, every track is in the double digits in length on this volume.

    With the exception of “Mercury” (2015), which was recorded by Jon Altschiller, the other nine tracks were recorded by Paul Languedoc.

    Phish is doing a three-night run at the SPAC this summer starting on July 1, and will later hit Syracuse on July 10 at the Lakeview Amphitheater.

  • Paramount Hudson Valley Kicks Off 86th Anniversary With Michael McDonald June 25

    The historic Paramount Hudson Valley theater in Peekskill celebrates its 86th year this Saturday June 25 with a special fundraising anniversary event featuring multi-Grammy award winning artist Michael McDonald. This year marks the third year of the theater’s stewardship by Red House Entertainment, who brought the venue back to life after it took a brief hiatus in 2012.

    The evening starts at 8 p.m. with the Hudson Valley’s own Marc Von Em of the Rob Thomas Band. As a regular at clubs throughout NYC and the northeast, Von Em’s dynamic performance on both vocals and acoustic guitar round out a complete sound for a one-man show. Following Von Em’s set Michael McDonald’s son Dylan McDonald takes the stage with his band Dylan McDonald and the Avians for a set.

    The evening’s headliner has made a name for himself apart from the bands he has worked with – Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers – along with many other musicians he has collaborated with after his time with those two bands. His work has won five Grammy Awards throughout his career. At the Paramount, McDonald will bring a collection of songs from his years with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers along with his solo hits.

    The 86th anniversary fundraising celebration at the Paramount will include giveaways and merchandise auctions. The theater asks for support “to assure [they] provide world-class entertainment to the Hudson Valley all year-round.”

  • Good Vibrations: Brian Wilson Breezes Into Syracuse This Summer

    This summer, the famed Beach Boys leader, Brian Wilson, breezes into Syracuse for a good vibrations performance at the Great New York State Fair. The legendary songwriter’s tour stop in Central New York is part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the group’s iconic 1966 album, Pet Sounds, in which Wilson will perform in its entirety at Chevy Court on Aug. 29.

Wilson’s Pet Sounds became his masterpiece, and at the time, it was one of the most expensive albums produced, at a cost of more than $70,000. Although the album was not as commercially successful in the United States as it was in the United Kingdom, it is now considered to be one of the most influential, and first experimental, concept albums. The 36-minute psychedelic surf rock record — inspired by the Beatles’ Rubber Soul — moved the group from on-the-surface lyrics of girls, cars and California living to a more introspective side. On revisiting the album, Wilson, 73, told the Nottingham Post, “It was a happy time in my life. I was young and creative, and it brings back a lot of good memories for me.”

    On June 10, Capitol Records released a 50th anniversary collector’s edition of Pet Sounds that features a four CD/Blu-ray audio versions in a hardbound book and 180-gram vinyl editions in both mono and stereo, plus session outtakes, alternate mixes and unreleased live recordings. Touring in support of it, Wilson will be joined by former bandmates Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin to recreate the Beach Boys’ 11th studio album that features popular songs like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows,” “Sloop John B” and “Caroline, No.” (Listen to the full album here.) Tour dates during this anniversary run also include stops at the Ottawa Jazz Festival on July 3, Toronto on July 4, Burlington, VT, on July 6, New York City’s Beacon Theater on Sept. 24 and at the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts on Sept. 28. The Chevy Court concert is set for Mon., Aug. 29 at 8 p.m.; the show is free with admission to the fair.

    According to Syracuse.com, Troy Waffner, acting fair director, dubbed the concert as a “once-in-a-lifetime event,” adding that, “this will be a magical night for fans of that band and album, but also a great night for others to discover some of the most important music of its time.”

  • Medeski Martin Wood Plan 25th Anniversary in New York City

    Although the jazz-funk fusion trio has been silent for bit, Medeski Martin and Wood recently announced the release of a new record this fall, followed by the news that the band would celebrate its 25th anniversary with two shows in New York City in October.

    After performances at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre (July 22) and in Esslingen, Germany, (Sept. 2), John Medeski (keyboards), Billy Martin (drums) and Chris Wood (bass) will regroup for two nights at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City. The Bleecker Street venue currently rests on the site of the old Village Gate where MMW played their first show together. The anniversary concerts are set for Oct. 19 and 20; special guests are soon to be added to the bill.

    As reported by Jambase, the news that MMW was back in the studio at work on a new album came from a Tweet by drummer Billy Martin:

    MMW dropped their debut album Notes From the Underground in 1992, and the group’s last release Free Magic came out in 2012 via the band’s label Indirecto Records. In 2011, MMW recorded brand new tracks to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their musical journey together, and aptly named the compilation 20. This fall, the three-piece is releasing a collaborative recording with the 20-member ensemble Alarm Will Sound.

    Tickets for the quarter-century celebration — both single-day and two-night offerings — went on sale at noon today through the venue’s website.

  • Heavy Montreal a Close Fix for Capital Region Fans Suffering Festival Withdrawal

    Capital region metal heads, are you looking for a music festival shot in the arm after the experience of this year’s Rock ‘N Derby event in the Albany area?  Make the short drive across the border for Heavy Montreal in August.

    Heavy Montreal‘s eighth annual festival has returned to it’s 2-day format, and will once again take place at the Parc Jean-Drapeau, on the island of Ile Ste-Helene on Aug. 6-7. Like in previous years, horn raisers will see another jam-packed mega lineup that’s sure to satisfy a variety of fans with many different styles of rock scheduled during the event.

    Heavy Montreal’s huge lineup of performers will grace five different stages throughout the venue. Metal heads will see some of today’s best in the genre. Saturday’s lineup includes Five Finger Death Punch as the headliner along with Nightwish, Mastodon, Black Label Society, Sebastian Bach and Trivium. Sunday’s lineup is headlined by Disturbed, with a supporting cast of Volbeat, Breaking Benjamin, Killswitch Engage, Alter Bridge and many more. Over 30 bands in all will perform throughout the weekend. Unfortunately, Ghost will not make the festival as originally planned due to scheduling conflicts.

    Doors open each day at 11:30am, with performances starting at 12:30 p.m. and ending at 11:00 p.m.

    Two bands on the bill, Disturbed and Mastodon, both took part in the inaugural Heavy Montreal in 2008. If you want to get technical, Adam Gontier was also a part of the first ever festival when he fronted Three Days Grace. He returns this year with his new band, the supergroup Saint Asonia.

    Disturbed and Five Finger Death Punch have headlined, or are in line to headline almost every rock music festival in 2016. Five Finger Death Punch recently headlined a festival in New York, the first ever Rock ‘N Derby, in Schaghticoke, on May 20.

    This year marks Disturbed’s third time playing the festival and Five Finger Death Punch’s first time. Disturbed front man David Draiman, has also appeared at the festival in 2013 with his side project Device.

    Albany area fans who want to make the trip can head up I-87N, and about three and half to four hours later, you’re there. Fans can also take I-89N, but add about another hour and over 20 miles.

  • Aqueous Announces New Drummer

    Buffalo groove rockers Aqueous announced they have ended their search for a drummer. After months of video submissions and touring auditions, the band announced via their Facebook page that Cincinnati native Rob Houk will solidify the quartet’s lineup.

    The official statement hit just as the band looks to hit the road with a strong summer festival touring schedule.

We searched high and low to find the right fit, and not only is Rob an incredible musician that we all connected with immediately, but he’s also THE RADDEST dude- As many of you already know from having caught recent AQ sets with him behind the kit, this guy is the real deal, and we’re all feeling super inspired by what he’s brought to the table- get ready friends, big things coming. Welcome Rob!

    On the other side of the coin, we’d like to sincerely thank ALL of the wonderful drummers who put in time and effort submitting great applications and specifically thank those who helped fill the spot temporarily and keep AQ going while we figured it all out, we deeply appreciate how much work everyone put in and means so much- THANK YOU! Onward.

    Aqueous announced in December 2015 that they were looking for a new drummer.  The band made the decision to not only make the search public, but to also extend the search nationally. Houk told NYS Music that he learned of the band’s search quickly via Facebook. “The day they announced it, that was all I saw on my news feed. There’s a ton of AQ [Aqueous]  fans in Cincinnati, so all of my friends were posting about it.”

    A few weeks after a video audition,  the band met with Houk. After that audition proved to be a success, the band gave Houk the opportunity to play with them at the Original Mother’s in Chicago on March 24. That led to Houk sitting in with the band as they hit the road in Colorado and the Midwest at the beginning of April.

    Aqueous and Houk made their way back to Buffalo on April 9, where Houk got to experience playing with the band in their hometown, an experience Houk said he enjoyed.

    The energy of that room was something I had never felt before honestly. The amount of love the city of Buffalo has for AQ is something really special. In was truly an honor to play for a crowd of people that care so much about the band. I immediately felt at home.

    Houk has a variety of musical experience behind the kit, spending time in bands spanning a variety of genres including punk and hip-hop. He is also the resident studio drummer Colemine Records, a funk and soul label based out of Loveland, Ohio. He recently played with the Cincinnati based livetronica band Ethosine.

    Among his favorite bands of all time, Houk notes a list of artists, some of which Aqueous has shared the stage with. “Some of my favorite bands of all time are Umphrey’s McGee, Dopapod, Papadosio, Ween… There’s a long list. I try to find influence in everything I listen to.”

    Houk will play his first show as the band’s official drummer in Buffalo this Wednesday when hometown fans of Aqueous can catch the band play a free show at Buffalo’s Larkin Square. The band has already kicked off the summer with festival spots at Summer Camp, Domefest and the Paradise Music Festival. You can check out Aqueous with Houk behind the kit this summer at Electric Forest, Peach Fest and Disc Jam as well as Western New York-area festivals including Buffalove and Night Lights Festival.

  • Charley Orlando Unveils Summer Tour Dates

    Charley Orlando, the folk-rock singer-songwriter from Glenville, will perform across Central New York this summer.

    The artist released the dates of his upcoming shows this week. He will perform solo at Funk n’ Waffles in downtown Syracuse at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 12. Tim Herron will also play that night.

    The following weekend, Orlando is scheduled to perform at Cortland Beer Company in Cortland and Art on the Porches in Syracuse on Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18, respectively. In the Friday show, the singer will be joined, as he often is, by the musicians of his band RUHA.

    One of Orlando’s other projects — Pearly Baker’s Best, a Syracuse-based Grateful Dead tribute band — will play twice this summer. The group will be at Funk n’ Waffles on Saturday, July 9, as part of Hippie Ball II before appearing at Ray Brother’s BBQ in Bouckville for the Jerry Garcia Celebration on Friday, Aug. 5.

    Orlando has released 13 albums, most recently StarSeed in 2014. On his website, Orlando refers to the album as “an unconventional recording style creating rhythmic patterns and atmospheric layers in Ableton Live first, before adding guitar, harmonica, and finally vocals to each track.”

  • Songs at Mirror Lake Music Lineup Features Anders Osborn, Elephant Revival

    Songs at Mirror Lake returns this summer to Mid’s Park in Lake Placid for its 11th season of free music, featuring a lineup of national acts like Anders Osborn and Elephant Revival.Songs at Mirror Lake Lineup

    Songs at Mirror Lakeis sponsored by The Pines Inn and presented by Adirondack “By Owner.” The free music series has been bringing nationally known acts to Lake Placid for 11 years to Mid’s Park on Main Street, right on the shore of Mirror Lake. As in the past, each of the seven nights of music have a different theme. The concerts are held at the new band shell rain or shine. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and enjoy the music in the park.

    The Pines Inn is a local historic hotel within walking distance of all Main Street in Lake Placid has to offer. Adirondack “By Owner” is a website featuring over 1,000 listings of vacation rentals, properties for sale and timeshares available all by owner.

    Songs at Mirror Lake runs for seven consecutive Tuesdays June 28 through August 9. All concerts start at 7 p.m.
