  • Pre/Post-Phish Shows at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas

    Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas has a series of shows from the Disco Biscuits, Greensky Bluegrass and Twiddle lined up around Phish’s four-night Halloween run at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

    brooklyn bowl las vegasThe Disco Biscuits play three nights Oct. 27 to 29. They’ll be joined by the New Deal on Oct. 27. Doors for the Oct. 27 show open at 7:30 p.m. with the show starting at 8:30 p.m. The shows on Oct. 28 and 29 are late night with doors opening at 11 p.m. with the show starting at 12:30 a.m. Tickets for all three nights are on sale now for $39.50. Three-night passes are also available for $118.50 for general admission or $180 for club level admission. Those interested in the club level must purchase a three-day pass.

    brooklyn bowl las vegasGreensky Bluegrass will play a late night show on Oct. 30 with doors opening at 11 p.m. with the show starting at 12:30 a.m. They will also play a special matinee show on Halloween to benefit the Waterwheel Foundation. Doors for that show open at noon with the show starting at 2 p.m. Tickets for both shows are on sale now. Tickets for the Oct. 30 show are $27.50 while tickets for the Waterwheel Foundation benefit are $22.50. Two-day passes are also available for $50.

  • Skillet’s Jen Ledger Hints At Possible All Women Supergroup

    Christian music rockers, Skillet, stopped by the recently opened Lucky Strike Social, inside the Crossgates Mall in Albany. The Q103 sponsored event, held a contest over the last week, giving fans the chance to enter for the chance to win a spot on the guest list, which was the only way into the intimate 3-song Q&A event. The event took place inside the venue’s, Jupiter Hall, which is a 900 person concert style club with tables and couches in a elegant setting.

    For years, rumors have persisted about an all-female supergroup consisting of Jen Ledger and Korey Cooper from Skillet, Lizzy Hale of Halestorm and Emma Anzai of Sick Puppies. During one of the Q&A parts of the show, hostess for the event, Q103’s Candace, told the ladies from Skillet, that the radio station had recently had Emma and Sick Puppies over for a Garage Session. Candace noted that Sick Puppies will join Skillet for a fall tour at the end of the year. She went on to tell the ladies that she was curious about the rumors of them teaming up with Anzai and Hale, and if there were a possibility that something could actually happen. Drummer and vocalist Jen Ledger replied, saying:

    We literally just spoke to Emma about this. We played a show with her recently, and she came on the bus with us, and hung out with us and I was like, ‘I feel were are getting a lot of demands on Twitter and Instagram, saying about them being a supergroup.’ The word is already out there, and we will see if we can make something happen. I think something needs to happen.

    Vocalist and bassist John Cooper quickly stated that they should do acoustic cover tunes, and he would help pick the songs for them.

    Skillet is set to release its tenth studio album Unleashed August 5. The band closed with an acoustic version of its lead single from the upcoming  album “Feel Invincible,” which has been heating up rock radio airwaves everywhere.

  • Say Hello to Temple of the Dog – Legendary Tribute Band Announces Brief Tour for 25th Anniversary

    Temple of the Dog, a six-piece all-star project, will tour this Fall in celebration of the 25th anniversary of their only album’s release back in April of 1991,  the self-titled Temple of the Dog.

    The band is comprised of Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave (guitar/vocals), Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Jeff Ament (Bass), Eddie Vedder (vocals), Mike McReady (lead guitar) and Matt Cameron (drums). The group was together for only a year, preceding the 1992 breakthroughs for both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Vedder will not be performing on this tour, however. 

    It was an emotional, history-laden project that was brought to life from the grief of losing a close friend and musician, Andrew Wood, to a drug overdose. Wood was known for having great potential, rising in the booming Seattle music scene in the ‘80’s, associated with bands such as Green River, Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone, and shared time with many musicians, in the tight-knit musically “incestual” community.

    The loss was hard on Cornell, fellow band-member and housemate of Wood, who found an outlet by writing a couple of songs, later to become “Reach Down” and “Say Hello 2 Heaven,” on Temple of the Dog. He approached Gossard and Ament, also reeling from the loss of Wood weeks before their Mother Love Bone first CD release, to see if they wanted to record with him. What started as an idea for an EP became something much bigger, when the songs came pouring out, and they decided to make it into an album. The addition of Matt Cameron, also in Soundgarden at that time, brought in McReady. Eddie Vedder was later added from an audition the group held. 

    Temple of the Dog received moderate attention when it was first released April 1991 by A&M records. However, after the explosion of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden on the Grunge scene, A&M rereleased the album the next year to a sweeping fandom that didn’t all care to understand the tender intricacies of the project.

    Although the group had two semi-reunions, it was deemed that they would never perform together. There was speculation that it would just remain as a tribute to Andy Wood, too painful for the group to perform. In a press release, Chris Cornell said, “We wanted to do the one thing we never got to do … play shows and see what it feels like to be the band that we walked away from 25 years ago.”

    On September 30, 2016 UMe will release a 25th Anniversary Temple of the Dog, remastered and newly mixed by Brendan O’Brien.

  • Beartooth Ready To Get Aggressive With NY This Fall

    Lost, aggressive youth of NY, are you ready to let out your aggression? Then join the boys from Beartooth this Fall as the band brings the U.S. edition of “The Aggressive Tour” to North America. Special guest to help support the tour will soon be announced. The stops in 32 cities across the nation with tickets costing around $20.

    The tour kicks off at the House of Blues in Chicago and wraps up in the band’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Beartooth has been touring in support of its second studio album Aggressive, which was released in June to many positive reviews.

    Beartooth recently made a stop in upstate New York this spring at the first ever Rock N’ Derby festival in Schaghticoke in May.

    Several New York venues are included on the tour. The Chance in Poughkeepsie is first up on the tour Oct. 29 followed by Irving Plaza in New York  Oct. 31, and Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park on Nov. 4.

  • Pianist Holly Bowling Reimagines Phish’s “Chicago Wedge,” Announces San PhranArt Vinyl Release Party

    Known for her classical reinterpretations of Phish and Grateful Dead jams, San Francisco pianist Holly Bowling is soon to issue her arrangements of Phish’s “Chicago Wedge” (July 20, 2014) and “Glens Falls Twist” (Oct. 23, 2013) on vinyl.

    Bowling released her debut album Distillation Of A Dream: The Music Of Phish Reimagined For Solo Piano through Royal Potato Family last year, which featured a reimagining of the Vermont quartet’s “Lake Tahoe Tweezer” (July 31, 2013) that Bowling has also issued on vinyl. The latest vinyl compilation will be a companion to continue the series of her piano “jam transcriptions,” and is pressed on 150-gram red transparent vinyl with album artwork from a linocut Isadora Bullock print. Only a 500 limited-edition run is available; copies can be picked up here, or for those heading west for Phish’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium shows, Bowling will host a record release party at PhanArt’s San PhranArt Show on Tues., July 19 at Mezzanine.

  • Houston Police Arrest 130 in Gear Theft Ring

    Rock Feed reports that the Houston Police Department has announced the arrest of 130 individuals in connection to a massive band gear theft ring that has been going on for over a year. The crime ring would steal vans and trailers filled with expensive equipment of touring musicians. Among those arrested, some were gang members, while some of the suspects have lengthy rap sheets, with a long criminal history.

    An extensive undercover investigation by law enforcement led to the massive amount of arrest. In a recent press conference, authorities said that more arrests are imminent in the coming weeks. The 130 person arrest has resulted in over 200 charges filed, while recovering almost two million dollars in stolen goods. Criminals would avoid pawn shops and use word of mouth to sell items on the black market. Some of the goods would even be transferred to Mexico.

    The Houston P.D. said that the thieves would also target and score big ticket items fast, including motorcycles, which one business lots its entire lot overnight. The ring would use concert venues as a hot spot for such items, as it was easy to steal large quantities of merchandise, quickly.

    Lt. Mike Osina of the Houston P.D. said, “These thieves were stealing anything and everything they could put their hands on. They went after trailers they saw parked on the streets of Greater Houston.”

    Captain Edwards of the Houston P.D. stated,

    “To date the amount of property recovered is estimated to be upwards of 2 million dollars. In the course of this past year, this collaborative effort, through cooperation and communication, flexibility and a focused work ethic has led to the dismantling of this criminal enterprise.”

    In May of 2015, country singer Zane Williams, had his van and trailer stolen, losing a 100 year old violin in the theft. Earlier this year, Americana rockers the Black Lillies, had their van and trailer stolen, leaving the band stranded in Houston with no way back to their hometown in Tennessee.

  • Hollywood Vampire Joe Perry Collapses During Show

    Sunday evening provided a scare to members of the rock collective Hollywood Vampires and its fans at the Ford Amphitheater at Brooklyn’s Coney Island. Shortly into the band’s set, Joe Perry, long time Aerosmith guitarist, began to feel dizzy and sat down on the drum riser.  Moving off to side stage he collapsed and was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital.

    Continuing with the show, the band was unaware of his condition and wished their friend and colleague well in unison with fans.

    Keeping up with his progress through social media, he is currently “stable and resting” at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

    With a full schedule still up in the air, Alice Cooper has kept fans updated through social media posts and for the time being, the show must go on.

  • Primus Drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander Suffers Second Heart Attack

    In 2014, Primus drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander suffered a heart attack, resulting in Tool drummer Danny Carey filling in for several dates Primus had scheduled for a tour with its classic lineup while Alexander recovered.

    Tim AlexanderSaturday, Alexander revealed via his Instagram, that he recently had another heart attack:

    Alexander is currently home and resting according to a follow-up Instagram post Saturday. Primus is next scheduled to play festival dates at Joshua Tree and Sacramento in October.

    Primus played Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown last summer on a tour with Dinosaur, Jr. and Sean Lennon’s Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, a tour that led to the recent Claypool Lennon Delirium album and tour. Below is a fan-shot video of “Southbound Pachyderm” complete with fireworks display.

  • Composter and Bassist Rob Wasserman Passes Away at 64

    Rob Wasserman, Grammy award winning bassist and composer, known for playing with artists such as Ani di Franco, Lou Reed, and Bob Weir, has passed away at the age of 64.

    rob wassermanMere hours after Weir announced via Facebook that Wasserman was hospitalized and facing a health struggle, a second post followed confirming his passing. Weir posted, “I’m devastated to pass along that Rob Wasserman lost his struggle today, and we have lost a beautiful friend and artist. I can still hear the sound of his bow playing those strings unamplified and pure. It’s one of the most glorious sounds I’ve ever heard, and the music and warmth he gave us will live on in the hearts of everyone he touched.”

    Wasserman attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studying composing and the double bass, though he began playing violin as a teenager. He was known for his trilogy of albums: Solo, Duets, and Trios. In the latter two albums, Wasserman worked with Jerry Garcia, Elvis Costello, and Lou Reed, among numerous others.

    Wasserman is perhaps best known for founding RatDog with Bob Weir after the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995. Previous to RatDog, Wasserman and Weir toured for several years as Scaring the Children. RatDog toured until 2014, performing Dead covers and some original songs. They released one studio album, Evening Moods, in 2000.

    Wasserman’s most recent album was Cosmic Farm in 2005.

  • Phish “Friends” Premieres at The Mann, Fishman shares Lyrics

    Phish premiered a new song, “Friends” from Syracuse’s favorite drummer, Jon Fishman on June 29 at the Mann in Philadelphia. Fishman posted the lyrics in the comments of a fan’s (Peter Banta) Facebook post earlier today.

    The band kicked off a three-night run at Saratoga Performing Arts Center Friday night, which included another debut, “Let’s Go.” NYS Music is on site and will have a full wrap up of the SPAC run.
