  • Dear Jerry Merriweather Show Features Dead Members and More

    Fear not, ye Deadheads who failed to get tickets to Chicago. Another event to celebrate 50 years of the Grateful Dead is in the works, and it’s going to be one hell of a show. Dear Jerry: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia will be held Thursday, May 14, at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. Former Dead members and bands that were influenced by the Dead will gather to pay tribute to the legendary frontman.

    The bill is currently comprised of the following acts: Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann’s Billy & the Kids, Bob Weir, Bruce Hornsby, Buddy Miller, David Grisman, Eric Church, Greensky Bluegrass, Jimmy Cliff, Jorma Kaukonen, Los Lobos, Moe., O.A.R., Railroad Earth, The Disco Biscuits, Trampled By Turtles, Widespread Panic, Yonder Mountain String Band and Communion featuring Phil Lesh, Stu Allen, Grahame Lesh, Ross James, Alex Koford, and Jason Crosby. And if that’s not enough – even more performers are slated to be added.

    The venue parking lot will open at 3:30 p.m., doors will open at 5:30 p.m, and the show is set to begin at 7 p.m.

    Keith Wortman and Don Was – who are responsible for large-scale concert events to honor other musical greats like Johnny Cash, Levon Helm, Dr. John, Gregg Allman, Mavis Staples and Emmylou Harris – are putting together the concert. Wortman is the executive producer, and Was is the musical director, and he’ll lead an all-star band that will back the performers. The Jerry Garcia family is co-producing.

    “It’s exciting to have so many phenomenal artists performing in this special musical tribute to my dad, Jerry Garcia!” Trixie Garcia said in a press release announcing the event. “‘DEAR JERRY: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia’ speaks volumes to Jerry’s lasting influence in the ears and hearts of his fans and fellow musicians. Join us in celebrating the legacy that inspired so many.”

    The concert will be filmed and recorded for distribution on both traditional and digital media.

    There’s merch available already and the concert organizers are encouraging people to tweet “Jerry moments” using the hashtag #dearjerryconcert.

    Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, March 13, via Ticketfly.com or by calling 877-4FLY-TIX. They can also be purchased in person at the venue box office. Those who have a Citi card will have access to a presale that will run from noon March 10 to 10 pm. March 12.

    A percentage of the proceeds will go to the Rex Foundation, which has a broad mission to help underprivileged and indigenous people as well as promote a healthy environment and the arts. The nonprofit organization was formed in 1983 by members of the band with help from family and friends.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Ocular Panther Premiere Obtuse Snoot and Add Drummer

    A few months back the band nicknamed as Ocupanther reverted to their full name Ocular Panther and started touring as a three piece with multi-instrumentalist Collin Jones handling guitar and keys. The all instrumental electro-prog-space-funk band has been gathering larger and larger crowds regionally and writing tons of new material. NYSMusic is elated to offer fans the first look at “Obtuse Snoot” from Ocu’s 2014 release Data Stretching. Ocupanther is the aforementioned Jones, Jason Gilly on Bass, and Mikey Pantano on guitar.

    Ocu fans will also be psyched to know the band has expanded their lineup to include the mega-talented Jimmy Grillo on the skins. Grillo played for years on the NY scene in the now defunct Roots Collider and will debut as drummer March 26 at Flour City Station in Rochester with NYC’s hottest also-instrumental trio – Consider the Source. Grillo is also currently in The Younger Gang. Obtuse Snoot.

  • Mumford and Sons Announce ‘Gentlemen of the Road’ Stopover Tour Dates and New CD Release Date

    Two big announcements came this week from our favorite stage-stomping folk quartet. Mumford & Sons let the good news roll announcing this year’s Gentlemen of the Road Stopover dates as well as a release date for their forthcoming studio album Wilder Mind.

    Since 2012 Mumford & Sons have hosted a handful of festivals in small towns throughout the United States. This year they’ll be kicking it off with a nearby stop in Seaside Heights, NJ on June 5 and 6 just a week before their set at Bonnaroo. Other U.S. dates include Waverly, IA June 19-20, Walla Walla, WA August 14-15 and Salida, CO August 21-22.

    The lineup for the Seaside Heights, NJ Stopover will include Mumford & Sons joined by Alabama Shakes, Blake Mills, Dawes, Jeff the Brotherhood, Jenny Lewis, Little May, The Flaming Lips, The Maccabees, and The Very Best. Tickets for this one go on sale March 6.

    The other big announcement was that of the release of the band’s forthcoming third studio album Wilder Mind. The album is set to be released on May 4 with the first single, “Believe,” released a week ahead on April 27. Some new – and different – sounds will be coming from Mumford & Sons on Wilder Mind.

  • Faith No More Release New Track “SuperHero”

    In an unexpected – and completely appropriate move – Faith No More have released new track “Superhero” from their upcoming album (May 19) Sol Invictus via Marvel.com.

    18 years have passed since the last FNM release Album of the Year and fans have been foaming at the mouth for more ever since. The latest track features the typical grunge meets metal meets groove style of earlier FNM and the apropos repeated lyric: “Leader of men, will you be one of them?.” Check it out below!   • Exclusive: Mister F Celebrate 2nd Anniversary With New Videos

    Two years ago today – brothers Matt and Ben Pickering and axe man Andrew Chamberlaine came together with multi-instrumentalist/sit-in wizard Scott Hannay to form Albany’s Mister F. Despite their short tenure – the F have grown exponentially – building crowds up and down the coast and deep into the mid-west. They are also attracting some top name attention with Umphrey’s Joel Cummins sitting in at a recent F show.

    Mister F is celebrating the occasion by releasing three brand new videos to say thanks to their fan-base – known as F-Squad. The first is “Don’t Lose Your Watch”. NYS Music caught up with keys man Hannay who shared the thought process behind the song’s creation:

    When we were writing and had the song pretty much put together, we decided it would be cool to lay down vocoder vocals for this one. I ended up getting hooked on the game Portal 2 that same week, and there is an omnipresent computer talking to you the whole game, taunting you and playing mind games with you. I thought to write it from the perspective of a similar computer, as the human is trying to get it to understand music based in 5 beats per measure (most of the song itself). The computer is basically saying “yeah, not gonna happen. doesn’t really matter, I’ll still be around when you’re gone” but encounters some frustration when it really tries to figure it out. In the end, the computer doesn’t really need to understand it, because it’s a computer, and tells the human to stop wasting its time with such a futile endeavor – “Don’t lose your watch, your time is wealth” – Scott Hannay

  • The Jauntee Hit New York Before West Coast Run

    The Jauntee will play a New York City show – plus one in Boston -before heading out for a West Coast run.

    The hard-touring jam band from Boston will hit Church in Boston before a show at Pianos on March 15 in New York City.

    Then they’re set to play play a number of concerts throughout Colorado, plus stops in Ohio and Kentucky before returning to the Northeast with a New Hampshire show on April 11.

    The band, which bills itself as “Psychedelic-JazzBluesFunk with a touch of Latin based Reggae” consists of Caton Sollenberger on guitar, Tony Cerullo playing keys, John Loland on bass, and drummer Scott Ferber.

  • Joey Eppard Streams Live Album

    Joey Eppard – Woodstock, NY singer/songwriter, front man and guitarist of progressive band 3 – made his 2013 live album Joey Eppard: Live in Concert available in full on Bandcamp nearly two years after release. Previously only four songs had been available for play.

    Eppard said that the goal of recording the set was to give far away fans the ability to hear him live. The set was performed in front of an intimate audience, mixed by Eppard himself, and includes guest spots – notably by drummer Chris Gartmann. The performance also includes some songs off of Eppard’s 2002 solo album Been to the Future, as well as a number of acoustic 3 arrangements.

  • Bela Fleck, Ani DiFranco, The Mavericks and Guster among 2015 Clearwater Festival acts

    This year’s Clearwater Festival will include a diverse group of acts including Ani DiFranco, Guster, The Mavericks, and Bela Fleck with his wife Abigail Washburn. The festival runs June 20-21, 2015 and will once again take place on the banks of the Hudson River, at Croton Point Park in Croton-On-Hudson.

    Other acts include Niko Case, The Mavericks, Blind Boys of Alabama, Angélique Kidjo, Shelby Lynne, Bettye LaVette, The Pine Hill Project feat. Richard Shindell & Lucy Kaplansky, The Felice Brothers, The Lone Bellow, Todd Snider, Toshi Reagon & Big Lovely, Joseph Arthur, The Klezmatics and Tom Paxton, among others. More acts are expected to be announced.

    Founded by folk legend Pete Seeger, the family-friendly Clearwater Festival, also known as Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival, is both a music and an environmental festival. Seeger started it as a fundraiser for an environmental organization he founded.

    “Pete and (his wife, festival co-founder) Toshi both passed away a little over a year ago, but Pete’s legacy of harnessing the spirit of change through the power of song lives on at The Clearwater Festival,” reads a press release announcing the lineup.

    Early bird tickets are on sale now through March 23 on the festival’s website. Kids 12 and under are free.

  • Update: Grateful Dead Fare Thee Well Mail Order

    Dead fans across the world have been desperate to hear back from the Fare Thee Well Mail Order room about their tickets to the bands 50th anniversary shows at Chicago’s Soldier Field. With the public on-sale date of Feb. 28 rapidly approaching – unfortunately – it doesn’t look good. With over 60,000 requests for 350,000+ tickets it’s estimated that only one in ten fans will be singing “Truckin’” instead of “Brokedown Palace”. Team Dead encourages fans who do not hear back on mail order by the public date of Feb. 28 to try and get tickets that day.

  • Retired Buffalo Hardcore Legends Snapcase are Practicing

    Snapcase’s fierce driving riffs and aggressive vocals defined them as one of the premier genre bands for the ’90s hardcore music scene.

    Originally conceived in a basement in West Seneca NY in 1989 – the five piece built quite the frenetic fan base over the course of the next 16 years before mostly disbanding in 2005. Since then they have played occasional shows – usually in Buffalo – but none since a finale show with the closing of Mohawk Place in 2013.

    That all may be changing soon as the band indicated on their website today that they are practicing.

    With their next and only 2015 tour date scheduled for Montebello, Canada’s Amnesia Rockfest way off in mid June fans will no doubt be wondering if more tour dates are in the works – or perhaps (hold your breath) some new music?  Stay tuned!
