  • Is a Grateful Dead Reunion in the Works?

    With the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary slated for next year it’s starting to look like a true reunion tour is a possibility.

    Founding member Bob Weir as quoted in Rolling Stone: “We have to do something commemorative, I think we owe it to the fans, we owe it to the songs, we owe it to ourselves.” and “If there are issues we have to get past, I think that we owe it to ourselves to man up and get past them.”

    Since Jerry’s death in 1995 there have been two partial reunion groups – The Other One’s in the late 90’s, and The Dead which last hit the stage in 2009. Since then, remaining members have remained at arm’s length in the split faction’s of Furthur (Weir/Lesh) and the Rhythm Devils (Hart/Kreutzmann) barely on speaking terms. Lesh has also stated he is retiring from “the tour bus” after 2014.

    There are definitely remaining hurdles to cross, but any glimmer of an original lineup Grateful Dead reunion tour should have fans salivating with heady hope. Stay tuned…

    Hank Williams III, otherwise known as Hank3, will be playing several dates in Upstate, NY this June. Bringing his hellbilly style of country music to Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester. Williams is touring in support of his recent, October 2013 release of his double country album, Brothers of the 4X4, and punk album, A Fiendish Threat.

    A Hank3 show is a one-of-a-kind musical performance that begins with a set of country music, then a set of his hellbilly tunes, followed by a knock down drag out Assjack psychobilly set. His shows take on these different personas while featuring Williams’ extensive range of instrumental expertise.

    You can get your hellbilly groove on with Hank3 starting Wednesday June 11, in Rochester, NY at the Montage Music Hall. Doors open at 7PM, this is an 18+ show and tickets will be available at the door for $20.

    Friday June 13 in Buffalo at the Town Ballroom the doors open at 7PM, ages 16+ and tickets are $20 in advance and $24 day of the show. Tickets are available online or at the box office.

    Lastly, Saturday June 14 at Lost Horizon in Syracuse, doors open at 7PM and tickets can be purchased for $20 in advance and $25 day of show. Pick up your tickets at the venue box office.

  • Yonder Mountain String Band’s Harvest Music Festival Announces Lineup

    Bluegrass heavyweights Yonder Mountain String Band have announced the lineup for their annual Harvest Music Festival being held at Ozark, AZ October 16-18 2014. This camping and music festival is bringing the top names in the industry to the picturesque Mulberry Mountain for a celebration of epic proportions.

    Joining the festival lineup this year will be – Yonder Mountain String Band with special guest Jerry Douglas, Trampled By Turtles, Railroad Earth, The Jayhawks, Lettuce, The Devil Makes Three, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Jerry Douglas Band, Tea Leaf Green, Everyone Orchestra, Split Lip Rayfield, Elephant Revival, Cornmeal, and so many more!

    All tickets include camping, a family camping area with a “lights out” at 11pm policy is also available. Children 11 and under are free with a paying adult, VIP tickets and camping are available. Tickets can be purchased online HERE.

  • Donna The Buffalo is set to Play at Inspire Moore Winery in Naples

    Donna the Buffalo debuted their first studio album in five years, Tonight, Tomorrow and Yesterday, on June 18, 2013 via Sugar Hill Records. They have been touring the country in support of that album feverishly throughout the past year and they are bringing their Americana music to Naples, NY on Friday June 20th at Inspire Moore Winery at 197 North Main Street, Naples, NY 14512. This is an all ages show, tickets are $15 adv; $20 dos.  

    Closing in on the quarter-century mark, Donna the Buffalo has proven itself a consistent purveyor of Americana music. What’s the recipe? To be sure, it’s infused with more spices than you’ll find at a Cajun cookout by way of a southern-fried, country old-time jamboree.

    The group draws its inspiration from a cherished part of the American heritage: the old-time music festivals of the south that drew entire towns and counties together. “Those festivals were so explosive, and the community and the feeling of people being with each other, that’s the feeling we were shooting for in our music,” Puryear says. “Donna the Buffalo is an extension of the joy we’ve found.”

    Donna the Buffalo has toured the nation for nearly twenty five years with an ever-evolving grassroots sound and plans to keep on doing so for many years to come.

  • Woodstock 50th in the Works for 2019?

    Woodstock has gone through two major official reincarnations since the original fest changed the musical landscape forever. With the 45th anniversary this year, many have wondered whether the third installment of this epic music festival would be in the works. While this appears to not be happening, original promoter and co-creator Michael Lang appears to be in the early planning stages of the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, an event that launched so many careers into the stratosphere.

    Details are minimal at this point: the site will likely be near the original Bethel site, and it’s anyone’s guess which bands will be present. Considering the past two were fraught with issues (Mud, fires, crime etc.), one would hope they go back to the original mindset: hippies, peace and love. NYS Music will be monitoring this story and keep you abreast of any changes. Who would you like to see at Woodstock’s 50th?

  • June Storms in With a Blaze of Metal Glory

    In a one-two punch that even the most fanatic of moshers couldn’t ignore, the beginning of June 2014 brought new singles of Metal Glory from two of some of the most esteemed bands among headbangers.

    Yesterday, Sweden’s Opeth, known for mixing absolutely brutal riffs and growling vocals with progressive psychedelia akin to King Crimson, released their newest single “Cusp of Eternity” from their upcoming 11th studio release, Pale Communion. Like their last album, Watershed, the death metal vocals remain absent as the band continues to head towards the path of progressive rock. However, unlike that last album, this single at least indicates a more focused effort, with a nice flow and a decidedly “evil” feel to it. Check the animated video out on Vimeo here.

    Mastodon - Rockstar Mayhem Festival

    Today, Upstate NY’s Mastodon released the second track from the forthcoming Once More ‘Round The Sun. If any band on earth has captured the fire Metallica left behind with 1990’s The Black Album, the Atlanta foursome is it. The newest track “Chimes at Midnight” seems to find a home somewhere in between the bare bones metal of the last release “The Hunter” and the blinding changes and underlying spooky vocals of Mastodon’s early days.

  • Free Music on Tuesdays in Colonie

    The Capital Region is not short of live music during the summer months. Pay attention and you’ll find some gems, like the free weekly music series hosted by Colonie’s Frank A Leak Amphitheater for the Arts in Cook Park on Tuesdays.

    Each concert takes place on a Tuesday throughout the summer starting at 6:30 pm.  A different genre of music is represented with each concert, with some artists returning from previous years.

    Kicking things off this season will be The Beatles tribute band, Across The Pond, on June 10th.  The addition of this band out of Glens Falls seems most apropos with the recent announcement of Paul McCartney playing at Albany’s Times Union Center in July.  The remainder of the line-up promises an eclectic assortment; from polka to swing, from Sinatra to The Beatles, and from country to Celtic.

    And, speaking of Celtic, the ever-popular Hair of the Dog is slated to close out the series on August 26th.

  • Interpol Summer Tour Includes NYC Date

    Interpol made their mark on the US and UK alternative rock charts in the early 2000’s with hits such as “Slow Hands” and “Evil” and have a summer tour coming to NYC.  Combining a modern American rock sound with a ton of ’80s post-punk British influences like Joy Division, the band picked up a solid following of faithful “‘polsters”. Despite that, no one’s heard much from Interpol since their 2010 self-titled release, until just recently.

    The band has released an extensive, festival heavy tour schedule, including a June 7th date just across the border at the Field Trip Festival in Toronto and a homecoming show June 8th at The Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City.

    This will be their first time playing in the US in nearly three years.

  • Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band’s First Time in Buffalo

    Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band is a little lengthy of a band name in my opinion, but lucky for everyone, they’re also known, simply, as “Booty Band.”  As much a mouthful the name is, their sound is a lot for your ears to take in as well.   Their self-proclaimed raucous live show is a humble statement and their mix of deep funk with rock, soul, and rap makes for an interesting combination. Make no mistake, you might not take them seriously at first, but after hearing their spin on funk, you will begin to understand why they can put the fun in funky and showcase some serious chops at the same time. So, hearing all of this, are you ready for a last-minute Booty call?

    Just announced today, the band is slated to hit the stage at Nietzsche’s next Thursday.  The first-ever show for them in Buffalo is a great way to kick off the weekend a little early, and with a $7 ticket price, how can you argue?  With the release of the latest album this past October and a heavy tour schedule, they are making their name known, regardless of length or variation.  The show was put together by ECE Presents who have been doing a outstanding job in the Western New York area as of late, bringing quality talent and growing the scene organically, one show at a time.  Joining Booty Band and opening the night will be The Wakos who were hand-chosen for the show as they are the perfect fit for Booty’s Band’s bodacious sound.
