  • Trophy Wife ‘Get Ugly’ Album Release Show at TV Eye

    As the red velvet curtain parted at TV Eye on Friday, October 18, McKenzie Iazetta of Trophy Wife stepped up to her microphone to cheers from the audience. The band’s lead singer wore a red and white polka dot dress with a skirt showing the tattoos down her legs, ending in frilly white socks and black velvet Mary Janes. She exerted complete control over the audience, standing like a pouty doll come to life with her hair glowing and eyes glinting in the stage lights as she strummed their opening song, “I Will Be Here.” Alongside her were bandmates Christian Pace on bass, Michael Martelli on drums, and Rowan Martin on guitar. 

    A month ago, a song called “Keep It” came across my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist. I had never heard of Trophy Wife, but the single’s cover caught my attention and I gave it a listen. I was instantly captured by the song’s vocals, which hover on the edge of breaking while constantly building in intensity. The drums have a raw, heavy sound like they’re pounding against the aluminum door of someone’s garage. The song builds and builds and builds from a cry to a wail as it asks the listener, “Do you want someone else to make it better?” 

    Trophy Wife followed this incredible single with two others leading up to the release of their first album, Get Ugly. The final single, “Swamp Song,” is another heavy hitter. Opening with the screeching frustration of amp feedback and pumping drums, giving way to sweeter vocals. It’s a bittersweetness that turns quickly to frustration and anger, with the song’s chorus introducing off-kilter guitar chords before cutting out everything in favor of croaking vocals.

    “The Shame” is Trophy Wife’s most shoegaze-y offering on the album. It opens with a wistful guitar twang that conjures summer days. Then, as the drums grow more frenetic, we enter the first chorus, a breakdown that feels like heaving sobs with its all-encompassing distorted tone. 

    Behind it all is fantastic production across the entire album. The mix doesn’t leave any element behind, knowing exactly when to shift focus between instrumentation and vocals, allowing the totality of its emotional impact to reach the listener. This is a band punching way above their weight.

    Trophy Wife’s drama and tone make them a unique act to witness. McKenzie Iazzetta’s vocal control is the key to that drama, riding the line between breaking and keeping it all together. They combine incredible technical skill with a captivating stage presence, ensuring their strong fanbase will only continue to grow.

  • The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Announces Lineup for Popular Lift Series in 2025

    The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall has announced the return of the fan-favorite Lift Series in 2025. The new lineup includes various multi-talented individuals set to rock the audience.

    Curated by Organ Colossal, these performances give you the unique opportunity to sit on the historic Music Hall stage with the artists while they perform. The Lift Concert Series presents performances of new, independent music featuring regional performers, curated by local artists Sam Torres and Sophia Subbayya Vastek. The series sees three shows, one in January, February and March. Similarly, the lineup consists of three powerful music groups that plan to dazzle those in attendance.

    The audience is invited to be seated on stage, with the musicians, creating an intimate concert experience. Concerts are designed to last about an hour, and after the performance, concertgoers are encouraged to enjoy the rest of the evening at one of Troy’s many restaurants or breweries. Tickets are only $25 in advance and are available online and at the box office now.

    Genre-free Improvising Super Group with Reeves Gabrels, Jonathan Kane and Jair-Rohm Parker Wells.

    Reeves Gabrels (Guitars): Reeves Gabrels is an electric guitar virtuoso recognized by musicians and audiences alike for his expressive range and power. He is known for his creative collaborations with David Bowie during the ’80s and ’90s, co-writing, co-producing and adding his innovative guitar work to a half-dozen acclaimed studio albums in addition to extensive touring. Since 2012, Reeves has been a member of the iconic band The Cure, where his artistry continues to captivate audiences worldwide. With Reeves Gabrels on lead guitar for Doom Dogs, sonic brilliance is a hallmark of the band’s performances.

    Jonathan Kane (Drums): Jonathan Kane, the heartbeat of Doom Dogs, was a founding member of the influential band The Swans, has worked extensively with Minimalist godfather La Monte Young, was the only drummer for Rhys Chatham’s orchestra of 100 electric guitars, and leads his own trance-blues band Jonathan Kane’s February. His drumming style is characterized by a powerful and hypnotic presence, driving the band’s improvisations with precision and intensity. Jonathan’s vast experience as a drummer and composer contributes to the band’s ability to create spontaneous and enthralling musical moments that leave audiences in awe.

    Jair-Rohm Parker Wells (Basses): The foundation of Doom Dogs’ mesmerizing sound lies in the hands of Jair-Rohm Parker Wells, a true legend in the world of experimental rock and jazz. Aside from being a founding member of the avant-rock band Machine Gun, Jair-Rohm was also a member of the seminal German experimental Rock band Embryo during the 1970s. His NS Design electric upright and bass guitar prowess adds a rich and dynamic depth to the band’s spontaneous compositions, pushing the boundaries of experimental rock and jazz. Jair-Rohm’s artistic sensitivity and expertise make him an indispensable part of Doom Dogs’ sonic exploration.

    ZAN AND THE WINTER FOLK

    Zan & The Winter Folk is an Americana band from Troy, NY. Led by Zan Strumfeld, The Winter Folk create anthems for the revivalists, lullabies for the lonely, and ballads for the hopeful. Vacillating between an acoustic quartet — two guitars, banjo and upright bass — and a rocking quintet with drums, The Winter Folk blend an upbeat, rootsy spirit with a melodic longing and vulnerability in their storytelling. Since forming in 2017, they have played at festivals, music halls and living rooms. With a captivating sound and comedic banter, The Winter Folk reveal a unique and intimate performance wherever they play. The band has two EPs, “How To Be Alone” (2019) and “Your Girl No More” (2018). Their full-length album, “New Morse Code,” was released in June 2024.

    The Ladles are known for their signature harmonic blend, intricate arrangements and commitment to human connection. Imagine the tight, sisterly harmonies of The Staves meets Madison Cunningham’s songwriting ingenuity. At a Ladles show, you can’t help but feel part of something bigger. Swept up in their ethereal soundscapes, you can easily forget what separates you from the person next to you. Based in NYC and San Francisco, The Ladles are Katie Martucci, Caroline Kuhn, and Lucia Pontoniere.

  • Albany Rock Group The Jagaloons Release Newest Album “Forbidden Words” on Vinyl on November 1

    Albany-native rockers The Jagaloons have announced the vinyl release of their newest album Forbidden Words on November 1.

    The album was recorded in the Spring of 2023 at White Lake Studio in Albany, NY and originally was due to be released later in that year. But due to various delays with the pressing, the band pivoted to work with Ken Holewczynski at Tabu Recordings for the vinyl release. The album was released on streaming platforms and on CD on May 31.

    The Jagaloons were also very lucky to be able to work with Dave Klein (Agent Orange, The Ghastly Ones) on the mastering and Stephen Blickenstaff on the eye-catching cover art. Along with the digital and CD release, The Jagaloons also made a video for the title track, “Forbidden Words” which was directed by Yasir Kahn and edited by Bryan Moak.

    Hailing from Albany NY, The Jagaloons play guitar-driven, reverb-drenched, all-instrumental rock and roll. The trio takes the surf music of the 1960s and adds modern and eclectic influences, creating their own unique sound. The Jagaloons have performed all over the Northeast and down the east coast since 2015

    with some big names in the surf scene like Messer Chups, Surfer Joe, The Surfrajettes, Los Tiki Phantoms and more.

    The band will celebrate Forbidden Words with a release party on November 9 at The Hangar on the Hudson in Troy, NY. Joining them for the night will be Short Wave Radio Band, The Sci Flies, and The Sound Minds (featuring Chris Sprague of Los Straightjackets). The group anticipates the release of their vinyl of Forbidden Words to be released on November 1.

  • Award-Winning Professor Louie & The Crowmatix to Perform at Caffe Lena October 26

    Caffe Lena has announced the return of blues-roots fan-favorite Professor Louie & The Crowmatix on October 26.

    Professor Louie & The Crowmatix from Woodstock have been consistently returning to Caffe Lena. They have been expanding the borders of the Americana, Roots & Blues genres since the early 2000’s with Professor Louie’s stories, keyboard playing, singing and accordion. Their repertoire continually expands with Crowmatix songs from their 17 albums of originals, blues and Americana music.

    Their connection with audiences at shows helps create a family rapport. Prof. Louie (keyboards vocals-accordion) is joined onstage by band mates Miss Marie (vocals, percussion and piano) Frank Campbell (bass, vocals) guitar-slinging skills of Todd Mihan and drummer Dan Hickey. Professor Louie & The Crowmatix create a show that is constantly evolving with songs consisting of elements of Rock n Roll, Blues, Folk & Gospel Music with a dose of Jam framed in solid songwriting.

  • Recording of Allman Brothers Band Final Concert to Be Released

    A recording of the legendary Allman Brothers Band’s final concert at the Beacon Theatre in 2014 is being released on October 25, nearly 10 years since the finale.

    On Tuesday, October 28, 2014, after 45 years of performing the greatest live music in rock history, the Allman Brothers Band had arrived at its final concert. The dream created by Duane Allman in 1969 had come to fruition, gone through triumph and tragedy, joy and sorrow, flourished and faltered, and ultimately persevered to reach the pinnacle of the blues/rock genre. The road had seemingly gone on forever, but, in 2014, the group decided that forever would come to an end at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. 

    On Friday, October 25, in recognition of the 10th anniversary, rock ‘n’ roll history will be shared as the Final Concert 10-28-14 is officially released via Peach Records. Re-mastered here with improved sound quality, Final Concert 10-28-14 will be available digitally on October 25 and as a special 3-CD package with extensive 16-page booklet featuring exclusive photos and liner notes on November 22.

    The Beacon was the appropriate location for the ABB to make its last stand; the Allmans had logged more appearances there than any other venue and had also set a Broadway record, with 237 consecutive sold-out shows at the venerable hall. Starting in 1989, the Allman’s annual run at the Beacon became a rite of passage in Manhattan.

    Fans from around the globe traveled to the Upper West Side to be captivated by the group’s riveting shows. The band wanted a set list that would be a montage of its career, one that would pay homage to the original six – Duane, Gregg, Jaimoe, Butch, Berry Oakley and Dickey Betts – while also drawing from the group’s vast catalogue. With input from everyone, Warren Haynes compiled a spectacular, three-set show. Almost 30 songs, drawn from six ABB albums, along with three strong covers that represented the musical trajectory of the group.

  • Uncle Ben’s Remedy Releases Sixth Album

    Western New York alternative rock band Uncle Ben’s Remedy have released their sixth album, Saturday Night Swindle.

    Rooted in the small towns of Western New York, Uncle Ben’s Remedy provides lively performances and unparalleled storytelling to their enthusiastic fanbase throughout the area. With a fascinating blend of punk rock energy and the twang of swampy-backcountry alternative rock, members Ben Westlund, Harmony Griffin, Shawn Huestis, Brendan O’Connor, and Josh Mullin deliver riveting performances of catchy songs and rowdy theatrics time and time again.

    Uncle Ben’s Remedy has returned once more with their newest release, Saturday Night Swindle. Their sixth release since their debut in 2014, the path to this album was not an easy one. With a drummer swap due to their previous decades-long partner having to pass the baton from tinnitus and the recovery of their soundman/busdriver after a bout of cancer, Saturday Night Swindle has certainly been an emotional one to produce- a testament to the band’s dedication to one another and the music they share.

    A masterful entwining of rock, blues, and country sounds, Saturday Night Swindle captures the listener in an indescribable experience of understanding. Perhaps through the emotionally charged lyrics, or the effortlessly moving instrumentals; whatever the reason, Uncle Ben’s Remedy brings you into a conversation that can only be truly communicated through sound. Strings, keys, drums, guitar, horns, vocals that perfectly toe the line between southern twang and alternative rock, and more culminate in Saturday Night Swindle.

    Opening with the narrative-focused “Never Get Caught,” Uncle Ben’s Remedy perfectly balances the story unfolding in the lyrics with kicking instrumentals that perfectly set the tone for the rest of the album, one that promises to take you along for an exciting six track adventure.

    On “From The Outside” and “While Back”, the band leans into the more rock-influenced-country aspect of their sound. “From The Outside” takes on a cowboy on the frontier attitude paired with a concluding echoing duet that reinforces this feeling, the narrator refusing to listen to the words of those meant to tear them down as they trek towards their future unflinchingly.

    “Heartbreaker’s Heart,” leans full-in to the country twang energy with a bright tone and layers upon layers of guitar and strings that practically beg to be stomped along to, and Uncle Ben’s Remedy follows this immediately with “Liquor Wrote These Records”, the kind of song that starts off hard-hitting and concludes by pulling you to the dance floor with an infectious liveliness you can’t refuse.

    The album closes out with “Coming To The Show,” a deeply vulnerable track that perfectly explains why it’s never just music to artists like themselves, wrapping the project in a bow of self-assurance and careful optimism that leaves listeners with a sense of satisfying completion.

  • Oasis Announce Two Shows at MetLife Stadium

    Iconic English rock band Oasis has announced the North American Leg of their historic OASIS LIVE ’25 world tour which features two shows at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

    The North American leg, produced by Live Nation and SJM, will see Oasis play stadiums in Toronto, ON;  Chicago, IL; East Rutherford, NJ; Los Angeles, CA; and Mexico City, MX, next summer with Cage The Elephant as the special guest across all dates. Currently, the Oasis Live ’25 tour boasts shows in at least five countries – UK, Ireland, US, Canada, and Mexico. This historic world tour plans to go to other continents outside of Europe and North America later next year.

    The previously announced dates on the Oasis Live ‘25 tour sold out immediately culminating in the biggest concert launch ever seen in the UK and Ireland, with over 10 million fans from 158 countries queuing to buy tickets.   • Hearing Aide: Sons of Venus’ “Crisis to Crisis”

    Crisis to Crisis, the third album by NYC band Sons of Venus was released on in June. The album is a nuclear missile of existential prog-rock aimed at the heart of American greed.

    Sons of Venus are John Sully, (Composition, Production, Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards) Ruslan Baimurzin (drums), and Igor Reznik (Bass). Sully the band’s frontman, was a composer and sound designer at Ideal Glass, a film and TV studio in the east village, where he put together after-hour jams when he met Baimurzin. After adding Reznik to the trio, the band now experiments with musical styles like prog, psych, punk, and funk, and has three albums to their name.

    Crisis to Crisis, the third Sons of Venus album was recorded first by Sully; who tracked all the vocals, guitars, and keyboards, then sent the tracks to Baimurzin and Reznik for overdubbing. The result is a psychedelic journey that stays true to progressive and punk roots.

    The particular sound of Sons of Venus’ Crisis to Crisis is difficult to pin down for many reasons. First, it is of a fleeting genre that has been out of the spotlight for decades. Second, the length of the songs averages over 6 minutes each, and third the lyrics are quite sad – depressing really. In all, Crisis to Crisis is not a pop album by any extent of the word. Sully says, “Crisis to Crisis is not music for the casual listener.” It will not be played on the radio. This, to me, is a positive. While not being tethered to what the broader population wants, the project has the freedom to speak of the future honestly and refreshingly. The lyrics explore the disappointing trajectory the world is heading down. Look no further than the album cover to see images of forest fires natural disasters, nurses, and the stock market.

    The album has a spacey psychedelic sound that is clearly inspired by classic 70’s prog and psych bands such as, Yes and Rush. Additionally, many of the songs have distinctly David-Gilmore-esque, bending, trembling solos which add to the 70’s zeitgeist. Even the vocals are often mixed in such a way that adds to the aesthetic of belonging to a different era.

    Standout Tracks:

    “Dead Languages,” the opening track, begins with a crunching scratchy acoustic guitar that I wish there was more of throughout the album. The song blasts by on an intergalactic mission to expose the crux of our society. Sully’s lyrics reflect on the current state of human affairs. “We will forget the truths we let die inside ourselves.”

    “Guaranteed,” the second track on the record has a unique groove to it that brings The Flaming Lips to mind. Sully says, “Forget about the world you can hardly care, as long as you’re getting what you think is fair.”

    “The Art of Coincidence” is the sixth and final track which is the existential climax of the album. Heavy ominous bells ring announcing judgment day for us all. The finale of Crisis to Crisis has heavy synth production, tremolo, delay, reverb, and the tappings of crash symbols. Sully advises, “Touch the heart, tilt the scales, unfold the flags, raise the sails.”
