  • Philly Invasion: City Wide and Wax Jaw take on NYC’s Bowery Ballroom

    It’s only right for 2024 to end with a slew of high-energy concerts. On Friday, December 20, two Philadelphia based bands, City Wide and Wax Jaw, journeyed to Bowery Ballroom. The two shared similar goals: charm local New Yorkers and supportive listeners through dynamic and compelling music.

    Before these two Philadelphia based bands hit the stage, the night started off with The DTs. This modern pop duo, consisting of David Cacciatore and Tom Losito, channeled a variety of sounds. Melding into rock, punk and blues, The DTs sought to bring their hometown of Jersey to the forefront. They experimented with harmonies, catchy lyrics and rockin’ guitar riffs. The DTs also performed their new single, “Cherry,” an uplifting track, with roots in adolescent memories.

    Slowly as the DT’s set came to a close, more people started to trickle into the venue. Just after 9pm, Wax Jaw took center stage, ready to bring the energy. This past year, Wax Jaw has rapidly made its mark in the Philly music scene, drawing inspiration from punk and new wave genres. Evoking a sense of nostalgia while highlighting trans voices, the band is made of the singer Shane Morgan, drummer Ian DiBruno, bassist Greg Blanc, and guitarists Sean Vannata and George Fenton. Throughout this leg of the tour, Ben Manning replaced DiBruno’s spot on the drums.

    Right off the bat, Fenton took over the microphone, calling out to the audience to gather close and get ready to dance. Upon hearing his words, fans pressed close to the edge of the stage, tilting their heads back and forth in tune to the music.  Known for their album, Between the Teeth (2023), the band played hits such as “Be the Man,” “Mirror” and “Attitude.”  Morgan kept the crowd entranced, each song more powerful than the last. With a focus on lyricism and balanced instrumentals, the driving drum beats grounded the audience.  Halfway through the set, Fenton urged everyone to gather close to the ground. Reaching crescendo, band members and fans jumped up in the air, clapping hands and singing along.

    Wax Jaw’s high-octane performance set the mood for the rest of the night. Fans split into groups, chattering in anticipation about the previous bands until 10:30 rolled around. At this point, the front of Bowery Ballroom was packed. City Wide entered only a few moments later, earning a roar from the crowd. Vocalist Emily Goldenberg immediately made her presence well known, her strong and captivating vocals pairing perfectly Simon Sheintoch, Evan Brink and Patrick Crosgrave. Ben Manning joined once again on the drums, sticks flying as he pounded the bass and snare.  

    Placed into the alternative genre, City Wide draws inspiration from classic rock and upbeat melodies seen in tracks by The Lumineers and Mt. Joy. They honed a charismatic stage presence and their hit, “Countdown” seemed to resonate with frequenters of the Ballroom. Goldenberg declared this song was meant to pay homage to the upcoming New Year, counting down from10 in the midst of the chorus. City Wide also made sure to balance out the night with some songs on the slower side, including “Higher & Higher.”

    The evening concluded with City Wide returning for an encore. Each member donned Christmas themed sunglasses to cover Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run.”  A whirlwind of energy overtook the room, bodies swaying in time to the rocking, fast paced rhythm. Ending 2024 right at Bowery Ballroom, both Wax Jaw and City Wide hope to play NYC once again in the coming year.

  • The Felice Brothers To Rock from Brooklyn to Kingston to Close Out the Year

    After a hugely successful European tour, 2024 will be culminating with five highly anticipated shows for The Felice Brothers.

    The band’s end of the year run of shows kicks off Friday, December 27 in Williamsburg at Brooklyn Bowl, followed by a show at Brooklyn Bowl in Philadelphia. December 29 finds the group in Rockville Centre at Centre Station, and round the year out with two hometown shows for this incredible Americana band at brand new venue Assembly Kingston.

    The Felice Brothers call the Catskill Mountains home, yet much of their success to their early days busking and playing in around New York City. Playing unplugged wherever they could the band found their distinct sound and style, penning such songs as “Frankie’s Gun” from their self titled album and covering “This Land Is your Land” like Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, whom Ian Felice’s songwriting has been compared with.

    With three new brilliant records the past three years and an entire catalogue from the past 20 years, The Felice Brothers have been leaving audiences in awe with their foot stomping sing alongs, to tender ballads and everything in between.

    Through 18 official releases and gosh knows how many secret recordings (check out their black limo recording), The Felice Brothers have stuck to their roots, while experimenting (“Celebration, Florida”), finding new form and maturing as musicians all while capturing the heart of American life, strife, beauty, grit, struggle and the knowledge that each soul has their own unique story. From the rowdiness of their live record Tonight at the Arizona (which was also re-issued ten years later as part of a special record store day recording) to the more produced Yonder is the Clock during their first decade as a band is amazing to go back through as a listener.

    This writer was lucky enough to attend the 2019 and 2023 NYE concerts at Colony Woodstock and the band brought in many special guests, playing on songs old and new, amazing covers and so ,many special moments that left all smiling from ear to ear right into the New Year. The Felice Brothers are sure to bring out many more such more moments in celebration of their 20 year Anniversary as America’s top Americana band and the critically acclaimed songwriting that stands the test of time as well as the appreciation of their peers.

    The band shared their thoughts on the upcoming shows: “Friends and loved ones, we are doing it again! Holiday shows! Some old favorites and a NEW never before rocked venue in Kingston. Now you know what you’re doing to close out 2024.”

    The Felice Brothers have had a few lineup shakeups as their brother Simone moved along very nicely with a solo career, and the band found a new stride in 2014 with the release of Favorite Waitress. The new lineup also but out an incredible record Undress in 2019 and in the past few years has put out From Dreams To Dust (2021), Asylum On The Hill (2023), and Valley of Abandoned Songs (2024) which they have just finished a European tour supporting. Each record is a set of new treasures, and both Ian and James Felice have truly found their voices and are complemented so well by the backline and backing vocals of Jesske Humme (bass), Will Lawrence (drums).

    Located in Kingston’s vibrant Uptown/Stockade District, Assembly Kingston is poised to become avcornerstone of the region’s burgeoning arts and culture scene. These New Year’s Eve performances will be a special homecoming for the band, who will take the stage to ring in 2025 with their signature blend of folk, rock, and heartfelt storytelling.

    The Felice Brothers’ return home this December will surely lead to an unforgettable New Year’s Eve celebration. The beloved Americana band will perform two back-to-back shows on December
    30 and 31, marking the highly anticipated inaugural event at the brand-new venue, Assembly Kingston.

  • Daughtry brings “Adrenaline Gone Ballistic” Holiday Tour to Del Lago

    Daughtry brought their “Adrenaline Gone Ballistic Tour” to Del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo on Saturday, December 14, bringing a mix of nostalgia, adrenaline, and excitement to the stage.

    Daughtry opened the night with “The Reckoning”, a newly written song on their EP Shock To The System (Part One). The packed venue rose to their feet as head singer and North Carolina native Chris Daughtry entered the stage.

    The thrilled Del Lago crowd wanted more from Daughtry, shouting requests in between songs. Chris interrupted the setlist to fulfill the crowd’s request, playing a heartfelt rendition of his acoustic song “September”, written in 2009. The fans didn’t just come for a show, they came for an exciting interaction.

    The alternative rock band was formed in 2006 after Chris Daughtry made it to the finals in the fifth season of American Idol. His vocals and newly formed recognition earned him a record deal with RCA Records, and the band’s self- titled debut album would go on to sell more than a million copies after just five weeks of release, becoming the fastest selling debut rock album in Soundscan history.

    As Daughtry waved the crowd goodbye and thanked the Waterloo fans for having him, the crowd stuck around as they cheered for an Encore, wanting more. With the eager fans on their feet, Daughtry rushed back out on stage to close out the show with their song “Artificial”, the first single to reach the number one spot on the Mainstream Rock chart. The band will gear up for upcoming shows in Nebraska and Minnesota, concluding their 2024 tour in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

  • Styx and Kevin Cronin Announce “Brotherhood of Rock” Tour, Stops in Syracuse and Saratoga

    Rock legends Styx and Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon have announced their upcoming “Brotherhood of Rock” tour. The tour sees two dates in NY including Empower FCU Amphitheater in Syracuse on July 14 and SPAC in Saratoga Springs on August 12.

    Styx and Kevin Cronin have one of the strongest brotherly bonds spanning 25 years, especially since they’ve crossed paths on the North American concert trail along with the occasional joint festival concert. Fittingly, next summer they’ll join forces for the sixth time for their “Brotherhood of Rock” tour, along with special guest Don Felder of the Eagles.

    The seven men comprising Styx – James “JY” Young (lead vocals, guitars), Tommy Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards), Will Evankovich (mandolin, guitars), Terry Gowan (bass, guitar, vocals)—have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from over five decades of barn burning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts.

    Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones.     For his first solo summer outing, iconic vocalist and hit songwriter Kevin Cronin’s band features the same multi-talented lineup that toured America in 2024 as REO Speedwagon. Cronin continues to be joined onstage by lead guitarist Dave Amato and drummer Bryan Hitt, who have played in REO Speedwagon since 1989.

    Cronin began fronting REO Speedwagon in 1972, delivering a newly melodic sound, and setting the stage for the explosive HI INFIDELITY (1980). Fueled by massive hit singles “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run,” the RIAA Diamond Award-certified album remains a high-water mark for rock bands. He has written number one hits such as “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” and “Roll With the Changes,” “Time for Me to Fly,” “Don’t Let Him Go,” and “In My Dreams.”

  • Interpol sells out NYC for their 20th Anniversary of “Antics.”

    There’s something about anniversary shows that really gets a crowd going. Pressed against each other in the pit, hands swaying, chanting in time to favorite songs. What better way to celebrate 20 years of Interpol’s Antics than a 3-day sold out show at Brooklyn Steel? Longtime fans gathered for opening night on December 3. Ready to revel in the gritty, driving force of rich guitar playing and powerful lyricism.

    Around since 1997, Interpol was formed under New York University doors, beginning with lead guitarist Daniel Kessler, frontman Paul Banks and drummer Greg Drudy. Their post-punk sound has become a staple amongst New Yorkers, emerging as a key rock revivalist of the early 2000s. In hopes to sound sleek and mysterious, they derived their name from The International Police Association, signing with Matador Records in 2002. Now, Interpol has played at a multitude of venues across the world, joined by Sam Fogarino on the drums.

    With white sheer curtains draped across the front, a hush fell over the crowd as Interpol took stage a few minutes past 9:15pm. Opening with “Next Exit”, the band remained obscured. The crowd focused on projections of their silhouettes, jumping back and forth across the curtains. Once their second song, “Evil” reached crescendo, the lighting crew scrambled into the photo pit. The crew pulled back the expansive white sheet to reveal the band, dressed to the nines in black tailored suits.

    After every song, fans whooped and hollered, dazed by the thick smoke and dramatic strobe lights. Lush storytelling balanced out catchy choruses, pairing with intricate guitar riffs to make a visually immersive performance. Their iconic color scheme of black, white and red alongside a sharp typeface held true. Non stop energy created through intriguing lighting choices and special effects.

    As Interpol performed fan favorites such as “C’mere” and “Rest my Chemistry” the crowd pushed forward to the edge of the barricade, unable to peel their eyes off of the stage. By the time the 21 song setlist came to a close, the venue was absolutely packed. Reveling in the rush, fans lingered in the pit, chatting excitedly while sharing videos and treasured moments.

  • 8th Edition of Salt City Waltz Celebrates the Music of The Band at Homer Center for the Arts

    The Salt City Waltz returns this year to Homer Center for the Arts for its eighth edition, celebrating the music of legendary rock group The Band.

    With over 40 performers, Salt City Waltz is a virtual who’s who of all-star Central New York talent. The 2024 edition will bring a few fresh faces and several new musical numbers to the show. As always, the vibe will transform the room into a 1970’s Winterland Ballroom and transport concert goers to a different time and space. It’s a beautiful, special show that feels like no other, you simply have to come and experience it for yourself. Be there November 30, as tribute is paid to one of the greatest acts in Rock & Roll History, The Band.

    Homer is a community of artists, art lovers, music makers, and creators. The Center for the Arts is well known for hosting national music concerts, but also features film screenings, a community theater program (Center Players) and showcase artwork by regional, national, and international visual artists in the art gallery. The Center also hosts classes, workshops and programs throughout the year, and adds to the economic vitality of Central New York. The facilities are available to other community organizations and individuals for a variety of educational purposes, events and private functions.

    Legendary rock band Blue Öyster Cult has announced the release of a live performance video for 2020 track, “The Alchemist.”

  • Biography of The Band’s Richard Manuel Coming this Spring

    A biography of The Band’s Richard Manuel is slated to release this spring for the 50th anniversary of the group’s 1974 tour.

    The biography is titled, Richard Manuel: His Life and Music, from the Hawks and Bob Dylan to The Band (Schiffer Publishing, on sale May 28, 2025) celebrates Manuel’s immeasurable contributions to music, ensuring his soulful voice and profound artistry endure in the annals of rock. Richard Manuel sang and played piano for The Band, which originated in Toronto, Canada and Woodstock.

    The Band began as a backing group for the legendary Bob Dylan. The Band is often credited with helping to define the sound of roots rock and Americana, blending rock, country, blues, and folk into a cohesive and groundbreaking style. Their music was characterized by a raw, earthy quality that bridged the gap between traditional American folk music and modern rock.

    Richard Manuel was sweetly soulful and creatively multifaceted, leaving his mark on rock history that is still celebrated today. Through insightful analysis and interviews, his troubled yet inspired spirit is contextualized within music history. From his role in forming the Band to his iconic vocals and songwriting, Manuel’s influence resonates deeply.

    Author Stephen Lewis is a rock-and-roll archivist, collector, and storyteller. He owns and operates the Talk from the Rock Room website and podcast and has been writing about music for over 20 years, including contributing articles on Summer Jam and Little Feat for NYS Music. He delves into Manuel’s influence on the history of rock, along with discussing some of Manuel’s life as told through his forth coming book.

  • “Buffalo Rock City” Box Set Slated for December 25 “KISSMas” Release

    Buffalo-based KISS Tribute band Kiss This! has announced the release of Buffalo Rock City box set slated for KISSmas – December 25.

    Performing a full KISS tribute show (with makeup and costumes) under the guise of KISS THIS! – The Starchild, Kevin Blakita – lead guitar/vocals, The Space Ace, John Jeffrey – lead guitar/vocals, The Catman, Billy Eberts – drums/vocals, and the Demon, Taylor Stursa – bass/vocals; bring all of theatrics and bombast of a classic KISS show to fans all around the country. The Buffalo-based tribute band presents their Buffalo Rock City box set which releases on KISSMas – December 25.

    A limited pressing of 100 copies of the “Buffalo Rock City” Boxed Set, and the entire “BRC” collection being made available digitally for the first time. “Not the Originals” is a 4-album collection featuring the 2 studio albums, the live recording, “Buffalo Rock City ALIVE!     Foreigner has decided to extend its Farewell Tour and include a celebration of the band’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Original band members will join them at select shows starting with Foreigner’s sold-out three-week fall residency at the Venetian, Las Vegas. Both Rick Wills and Al Greenwood, who are frequent guests of Foreigner, will sit in with the band they helped create for the entire residency. Discussions are in hand to include Lou Gramm as Foreigner moves toward its 50th Anniversary in 2026. The band’s performances are still so sought after 50 years later that the farewell tour had to be extended – the demand was overwhelming.
