Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB close out three nights at Brooklyn Steel

On Thursday, May 23rd, Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB concluded their tour with a 3 night run at Brooklyn Steel, which saw their final show of the May tour sold out. Fans gathered by the masses at the brewery adjacent from the venue and all around the block, waiting in eager anticipation of what was to come.

Trey and Classic TAB traveled far and wide for this tour, going from Canada, to the Midwest, and ending in Brooklyn; it is clear that momentum is on Mr. Anastasio’s side. Fresh off an acclaimed 4 night run at The Sphere, a new album, Evolve on the way, and not to mention a nation wide summer tour, as well as a 4 night festival, Mondegreen, all of which on the horizon, it’s a busy time for Trey. However, he proved without a shadow of doubt that he has no intention of slowing down, regardless how much success he meets. Flanked by longtime collaborators Dezron Douglas on the bass, Ray Paczkowski on keys, and Russ Lawton on the drums, the evening featured an array of classics and bust-outs.

Their first song, “Party Time” foreshadowed the evening with fans swaying from side to side right off the bat. “A Wave Of Hope”, a song featured on the upcoming album, “Evolve”, saw Classic TAB delving into uncharted territory. Other classic tunes such as “Gotta Jibboo, “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan”, and “Twist”, solidified the evenings themes of a true celebration.

Returning for a second set, Trey and Classic Tab delivered an explosive rendition of “Blaze On”. Keeping the foot on the collective gas pedal, they navigated from “Plasma” to the rare but beloved “Alaska”. The vibe was locked and loaded when “Quantegy” rang out. The whole evening could be compared to a masterclass in the subject of musical exploration. Space, sound, and melodies interchanging, intermingling, and an audience paying such close attention, one could hear a pin drop.

Encores featured, “A Life Beyond the Dream”, and closed with “First Tube”. Fans left encouraged, knowing more music is on the way. Phish Releases Another Track From New Album, “Oblivion”

Phish has officially unleashed “Oblivion,” the second song released from their forthcoming new album Evolve. The band’s first album in over four years, Evolve, is set to arrive via JEMP Records/ATO on Friday, July 12. But now two tracks from it have been unveiled before its official release next month. First, the album’s title track “Evolve” premiered last month. And now “Oblivion” has been made available to the public – with both studio cuts able to be heard below.

Evolve, Phish’s 16th studio album, is produced by Vance Powell and Bryce Goggin. It was recorded in the fall of 2023 at the band’s now famous Vermont recording studio, The Barn. True to Phish’s unique creative process, the album’s 12 tracks were selected from arrangements shaped by the band’s dynamic live performances. Some, like the fan-favorite “A Wave Of Hope,” have become springboards for Phish’s most soaring improvisation.

Phish seems to be giving “Oblivion” the same treatment. The song first debuted last summer and has already been played ten times, with a few serious jams attached to the back end. This includes a standout performance in Syracuse just a few weeks after its debut. And a huge arena rock version as only Madison Square Garden can supply.

This new album seems to have a fitting title as Phish’s distinct musical language is on vivid display; still pushing boundaries, still very much continuing to evolve. The cover of Evolve and gatefold feature paintings by Mehdi Ghadyanloo. The track “The Well” is only available on the vinyl version of the album.

Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB at Wonderland Forest: Debuts, Phish Classics and More
Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB pulled their tour into Wonderland Forest in Lafayette on Friday, May 17 and delivered a rousing night of debut songs, Phish favorites and rarities.

Trey treated an appreciative audience to a mix of electric and acoustic music that delivered both high energy and subtle thrills. The setlist was a testament to the band’s versatility and musical prowess, spanning both familiar classics and experimental improvisations. From the infectious groove of “Gotta Jibboo” to the introspective “Water in the Sky,” each song pulled the crowd in and sent them on satisfied.

Wonderland Forest is a newer venue in the Syracuse area and a great place to see a show. It’s ten miles south of the city near Lafayette, sitting on 400 acres of forests and fields. When you initially enter the venue you walk down a gravel path through trees until entering a pristine clearing with a lovely pond. Vendors are clustered around the water, with a small stage for an opening act to use in the back. Walking further into a forest lit by brightly colored lights once the sun sets, you come to a beautiful amphitheater nestled in a grove.

As dusk descended upon this verdant expanse, eager concertgoers gathered under the canopies, their whispers mingling with the rustle of leaves, anticipating a night of transcendental music. They weren’t disappointed. Trey took the stage a little after 8 pm, opening with a driving, pulsating “Sand,” followed by some nice soloing on “Back on the Train.” He continued with “Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan” and then “Steam” before pulling out the acoustic guitar for “Heavy Things.” The crowd was then treated to the debut of a never before played song called “It’s Happening Again,” followed by the first performance of “Windora Bug” in three years.

Set Two featured a few songs off of Phish’s upcoming album Evolve like “Oblivion” and “Pillow Jets” as well as Phish classics like “Ghost” and “Blaze On,” and Trey Anastasio originals. After finishing, the band took the stage for a two-song encore, with Trey pulling out the acoustic guitar for “Water in the Sky” and then finishing with an electric “Prince Caspian.”

As the final notes of the encore faded, the crowd walked away happy – many no doubt on their way to catch the next stop in the tour. It was a high-energy night of music, only marred by a little rain, and a satisfying experience. Trey and Classic TAB’s playing was imbued with a sense of purpose and passion that resonated with every note. They are bringing their A-game on this tour and it is not to be missed.

Phish Unveils First Track From Upcoming Album, “Evolve”

As Phish prepares for four sold-out shows at the new Sphere in Las Vegas next week, they’ve released the first glimpse of their new upcoming album. “Evolve” is the title track of the new studio production which is set to come out July 12 on JEMP Records. This comes right before a summer tour that starts one week later in Mansfield, MA and includes three nights at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in August.

Evolve will be the first new studio album for Phish in more than four years and marks the band’s 16th one overall. The title track, which can be heard below, has been found on set lists as far back as 2021 so it’s certainly not a new number and one the band has crafted to their liking by now.

This summer will also see Phish play at Uncasville, CT’s Mohegan Sun Arena (July 23-24), East Troy, WI’s Alpine Valley Music Theatre (July 26-28), St. Louis, MO’s Chaifetz Arena (July 30-31), Noblesville, IN’s Ruoff Music Center (August 2-4), and Grand Rapids, MI’s Van Andel Arena (August 6-7).

This all leads up to three shows at the historic Bethel Woods Center for the Arts from August 9-11. It will be the band’s first three-show run at Bethel following their initial four-night stay in 2011 and two shows in 2022. This summer will see also Phish hosting Mondegreen, a four-day festival set for August 15-18 at The Woodlands in Dover, DE. Flashback: Phish at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, April 9, 1994

Just eleven days after the release of their fifth studio album, Hoist, Phish arrived in Binghamton for a show at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, just down the road from the Broome County Forum. The show quickly became known among fans for a funk-filled soundcheck, as well as creative placement of “Little Drummer Boy” throughout the second set.

Students from colleges across the state – Cornell, Syracuse, Albany and Binghamton among them – headed down to Binghamton on this evening, making for a lively lot scene. The marquee reportedly read “Reba McEntire” with “Phish – Sold Out” below it, perhaps the muse for “Reba” showing up in the second set this evening.

The soundcheck of “Makisupa Policeman” was indeed funky, although a full recording has yet to surface. All that we have so far is the clip below.

A reported “really difficult ticket,” Binghamton is no stranger to great Phish shows, with an early show at Campus Pub in 1988 and two shows at Broome County Forum in 1992. This 1994 show would unknowingly be the band’s penultimate show in The Parlor City, with only the notable December 14, 1995 show following, leaving Binghamton Phish-less for nearly 30 years – aside from two Trey Anastasio Band shows in 1999 and 2014.

A venue upgrade, this would be Phish’s first show at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, a minor league hockey arena, just down the road from the Forum. Opening up with “Magilla” for the first time, the GA show would hold a few songs that are ‘jamcharts‘ worthy, as well as some fun with “Little Drummer Boy” during the second set.

A pre-chant version of “Wilson” would follow this horns-less “Magilla,” a unique listen now after nearly three decades of fans chanting “Willllll-son” with each intro guitar riff. “Rift” would be met with great cheers in a typical early Set 1 slot, doubling as the title of the band’s prior album to Hoist.

“Bathtub Gin” would feature notable improv, giving way to “Nellie Kane” and the first track of the night off Hoist, a ripping “Julius,” also the first track on Hoist. “Fee” featured a piano outro from Page McConnell that bridged the way into the now ultra rare “All Things Reconsidered,” last played in 1997 and deserving of a return to the Phish rotation. The “Stash” that would follow is not one to sleep on, featuring ‘a gnarly and heavy-duty power rocking jam’ that paved the way for “The Squirming Coil” and set break.

Set two would open with another Hoist track, “Sample in a Jar,” to a brief crowd reaction. A hefty “Reba” that is well executed gives way to the Frank Zappa composition “Peaches en Regalia,” pairing Zappa-esque with a true Zappa tune, with an ending that featured a tease of “Little Drummer Boy” before shifting into the now-retired “Big Ball Jam.”

The debut of “Demand” would follow, and while a “Split Open and Melt” jam akin to the Hoist version was not paired with the short song, it did serve as a perfect bridge to “Mike’s Song.” This version of “Mike’s” finds Trey Anastasio using his pedals to create other-worldly sounds that are at times menacing and metallic, accented by LD Chris Kuroda’s strobes flashing through on-stage fog. A breather would be needed in the “I am Hydrogen” that followed, particularly because “Weekapaug Groove” would be chock full of teases – “Little Drummer Boy,” a latter portion of “Divided Sky” and even “Dave’s Energy Guide.”

Closing out this fun filled set were a calming “Tela,” “Slave to the Traffic Light” which featured a serene build and an outstanding peak, capped off by a well placed “Cavern.” For an encore, the band would start without microphones for an acapella rendition of “Amazing Grace,” followed by “Highway to Hell” – likely not exactly what the fans in the front row were looking for when they were chanting for “AC/DC Bag,” but a heck of a cover to drop on fans just as the show was coming to a close.

Phish Summer Tour Will Include a Return to Bethel Woods

Phish has finally announced their summer tour dates and the band will return to Bethel Woods for a third time after previous visits in 2011 and 2022.

The band’s return to the home of Woodstock will see shows played on August 9, 10 and 11 – the last ones of the tour before their Mondegreen Festival in Delaware the following weekend.

The summer tour kicks off with three nights at Great Woods in Mansfield, MA from July 19-21. It also sees the band returning to Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT a few days later. The Midwest gets a lot of attention this summer with weekend gigs planned for both Alpine Valley in Wisconsin and Deer Creek in Indiana with shows in St. Louis and Grand Rapids, MI also on the docket. Phish then returns to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts for a third time after a monumental three-day run in 2011 that helped sparked the band’s return from hiatus and a pair of weekend shows in 2022.

Phish Announce 4-day Festival this August – Mondegreen

Phish has announced the details on their first four-day festival – Mondegreen – and their first in more than nine years. The festival will take place at The Woodlands in Dover, DE over August 15-18, 2024.

What is a Mondegreen? Webster defined the word as “a misunderstood or misinterpreted word or phrase resulting from a mishearing of the lyrics of a song.” One example from Phish would be “Read Icculus” being heard as Ridiculous. If there was ever a more fitting name for a Phish festival, it hasn’t been named yet.

Phish will perform multiple sets over the four days of the festival, with a great number of interactive fan experiences yet to be announced, as well as curated regional food and drink, art installations and much more in store.

Mondegreen marks the first live performance in Delaware stage for Phish in over two decades, and the latest festival from a band who can be credited with influencing a resurgence of music festivals in the 1990s. Phish’s most recent festival, 2015’s Magnaball, was held at New York’s legendary Watkins Glen International and was widely considered among their best festivals yet.

Centrally located with easy access from all points in the northeast and mid-Atlantic, the festival site will feature an abundance of on-site camping, with many nearby hotel options also available.

Delaware’s picturesque Woodlands is conveniently located within driving distance from major metropolitan areas on the East Coast, including Philadelphia (under two hours), Baltimore (under two hours), Washington, DC (under two hours), and New York City (under three hours). Fans can also take advantage of Amtrak service to Wilmington, DE as well as SEPTA regional rail.

These nine words from actress Annie Golden, playing Jimmy’s Grandma during Phish’s New Year’s Eve concert, released a swell of emotions from Phish fans gathered at Madison Square Garden, witnessing for the first time in nearly 30 years, the first full performance of “Gamehendge.”

Written by guitarist Trey Anastasio as his senior thesis at Godard College, titled The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday, the rock opera tells the tale of retired colonel from Long Island who enters a mythical land where the lizards live under the rule of the evil king Wilson.

To the lay person, this is the plot to a children’s book, but to Phish fans, this is the holy grail of shows, only performed five times prior and not even this century, until December 31, 2023.

With a cast of Annie Golden (Grandma), Mitchell Sink (Jimmy), Jo Equality Lampert (The Wolf), Jeff Williams (Colonel Forbin), Daniel Gaymon (Rutherford) and Rebecca Magazine (Tela), the performance spanned a total of 17 songs, with costumed dancers, a flying mockingbird and slow-moving assassin sloth among them, over two sets, stretching past midnight into the first hour of 2024.

Gamehendge Unveiled: Phish Celebrate New Year’s Eve with Theatrical Odyssey

On Sunday, December 31, 2023, Phish took the stage at Madison Square Garden for the 83rd time, and gave fans an ultimate performance for the conclusion of their annual New Years Eve run celebration. In true Phish fashion, the event bid farewell to 2023 with a spectacular Broadway-style production, immersing the audience in the mythical realm of “Gamehendge,” performing the band’s rock opera for the first time in its entirety in nearly 30 years.

This series of shows not only added another feather to the band’s cap, but etched a historic moment in their 40+ year journey. The night kicked off with a powerful performance of “Everything’s Right”, setting the tone for an evening filled with seismic energy. The ground was shaking, sections of audiences were engaged in friendly competition to see who could be loudest. Confetti, glow sticks, and bubbles danced through the air, creating a sensory feast for the devoted crowd.

A hallmark of Phish’s New Year extravaganza is the visual surprise ushering in the new year. From scores of clones to airborne hot dogs, the band’s creativity over four decades knows no bounds. This year was no exception, as Phish embarked on a captivating odyssey into the magical world of Gamehendge, a story about the battle to save a once-thriving land. The tale unfolded through the wonderful narration by Broadway actress Annie Golden, renowned for her role in the popular Netflix hit, Orange is The New Black. As the opening notes of “Harpua” resonated, the audience exploded in euphoric bliss.

The second and third sets unfolded as a vivid retelling of Phish’s legendary folklore in Broadway fashion. Colonel Forbin stumbled upon the mythical universe, Gamehendge, a realm inhabited by The Lizards, now under the oppressive rule of the evil King Wilson. The first to discover this universe, Wilson steals away from the too-trusting species their beloved helping friendly book – a guide to eternal joy and never ending splendor. The stage transformed into a mesmerizing display, featuring a colossal rhombus rising from the ground, enchanting puppets, soaring mockingbirds, and the powerhouse band from Vermont performing each song with more meaning than ever, as die-hard fans were engulfed in waves of joy, laughter, and tears.

As the clock struck past 1AM, fans spilled onto the New York streets, clutching their commemorative cups filled with memories. Phish’s journey continues, with upcoming performances in Mexico for their annual Riviera Maya shows and an eagerly anticipated four night residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas.
