  • The Bon Scott Estate Celebrates Late AC/DC Singer/Lyricist’s 78th Birthday With NYC Show

Marking what would have been the late singer’s 78th birthday, The Bon Scott Estate is embarking on a number of high-profile activations to celebrate the icon’s life and music.

On July 9, the actual birthday of Scott, a tribute concert will be held at Arlene’s Grocery on New York City’s Lower East Side. The infamous rock club has hosted some of the most raucous nights of rock and roll in the 21st century, and the show will harken back to the secret set that AC/DC performed at CBGB in 1977. 16 singers will each tackle one classic AC/DC song with a stellar backing band.

    Bon Scott

44 years after his untimely passing, the music Bon Scott helped create with AC/DC continues to resonate with fans and fellow artists.

Few rock singers were as unforgettable—and have proved as enduring—as Bon Scott. As the frontman of AC/DC from 1974 until his tragic passing in 1980, his “rock n’ roll pirate persona,” street poet lyrics, and striking image have made him an absolute legend. Additionally, Bon’s vocals were featured in several pre-AC/DC bands, including Fraternity, the Valentines, and the Spektors.

But really, it is the quality of the songs of the “Bon-era” of AC/DC that serve as his greatest legacy: “Highway to Hell,” “Sin City,” “Whole Lotta Rosie,” “Let There Be Rock,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,” “T.N.T.,” and “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)”—the list is seemingly endless.

How does Bon measure up to rock’s all-time great frontmen? Classic Rock Magazine declared him “The Greatest Rock n’ Roll Front Man of All Time” in 2004, beating out the lofty likes of Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, and Axl Rose in the process.

In addition to the tribute concert, The Bon Scott Estate will be releasing a variety of merchandise and collectibles.

Two new online stores are launching in time for the birthday, one at Amazon in the U.S. and the other at Merch Jungle in Australia, making it easier and more cost-effective for fans to get their hands on their favorite singer’s merchandise. Further Amazon stores will continue to roll out throughout the world. Bon Scott’s e-commerce and merchandising program is handled by Perryscope Productions, LLC.

A brand-new merch design will be launching to commemorate the birthday by renowned Australian graphic artist Dave Homer.

Information and tickets for the NYC show can be found here. Visit here for official Bon Scott merchandise.

  • DRAG: The Musical Will Premiere in New York This September

Fresh off its stellar premiere in Los Angeles, DRAG: The Musical is making its way over to New York City for its official off-Broadway premiere. Previews begin on September 30, with its official opening on October 21.

DRAG: The Musical will make its home in off-Broadway’s New World Stages. Be sure to hold on to your wigs during this incredible performance of drag culture, fashion, family, and forgiveness.

    drag: the musical

DRAG: The Musical tells the story of two Houses competing for success and fame after a bitter split. In the wake of intense rivalry, up-and-coming Queen Alexis Gilmore opened her club, The Fishtank, and the glamorous Miss Kitty opened The Cathouse. Fueled by their individual heartbreak (and a lot of spite) for one another, the two queens do everything they can to make sure their club comes out on top, while simultaneously fighting against homophobia, transphobia, and financial struggles, even if it means scuffing their platform shoes. Old and fresh wounds open as the two see their clubs, their careers, and their beloved Houses compete for love, attention, and fame in Hollywood.

Written by drag superstar Alaska Thunderf*ck, along with critically acclaimed songwriters Thomas Costanza and Ashley Gordon, DRAG: The Musical brings drag performance culture to the next level. Unlike traditional drag, there’s only one rule: No Lip Synching Allowed. Even with this distinction, DRAG: The Musical brings the heat to the stage, featuring incredibly dynamic and energetic performances quintessential to the world of drag.

  • NYC Vocalist Morley Releases Highly Anticipated Single “It’s Hard To Stop”

On Friday, June 21, Manhattan-based singer-songwriter Morley released her newest single, “It’s Hard to Stop.” The single is the first off of her forthcoming album, Follow the Sound, set to release on September 27.

In collaboration with her husband, Chris Bruce, “It’s Hard to Stop” is a soft, soothing recollection on the tenderness of the human condition and heartbreak.

    morley

Over the course of the last decade, Morley has received widespread critical acclaim for her contributions to the arts. Before releasing her first album, Morley worked for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, a modern dance company based in Manhattan, as a choreographer. During her tours with the dance center, she began writing and composing original music.

Morley’s style combines elements of jazz, folk, and classic Americana glued together by free-flowing improvisation. “It’s Hard to Stop” is no different. The single incorporates elements of acoustic folk and indie with her bluesy voice reminiscent of Nina Simone.

Since then, she has used her music to become a widespread advocate for social justice. Morley has performed all over the world, including for and alongside prominent activists, charities, and religious figures, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, and Virgin Unite. In 2019, Morley released the album Borderless Lullabies, which continues to raise funds for K-I-N-D (Kids In Need Of Defense).

    morley

Now, Morley is ready to unleash her creativity through a combination of her iconic folk and jazz-inspired sounds. Along with her husband, producer Chris Bruce, Follow The Sound has contributions from several artists and instrumentalists. Meshell Ndegeocello (bass), Shara Nova a.k.a. My Brightest Diamond (vocals), Toumani Diabaté (kora), Jon Cowherd (piano), Chris Bruce (guitar, bass), Arun & Trina Ramamurthy (violins), Jack DeBoe, Jay Bellerose and Abe Rounds (drums), and Cole Kamen (trumpet) all contributed to the highly-anticipated album.

‘It’s Hard To Stop’ arose from an improv, a stream of consciousness while Chris and I were playing in our apartment one night. Looking out the window at all those city lights got me thinking about all the dreams and tender hearts striving to have a beautiful life inside them, glimpses of our highest possibilities came to mind, and how hard it is to stop from wanting things to be different in the world than the way they are, right now.

In 1982, Yngwie Malmsteen came to the United States to kickstart his career. He appeared on multiple albums and performed in the hard rock band Alcatrazz. In 1984, he earned a solo deal and released his debut solo album. Rising Force. Since then, he has recorded over 22 studio albums and earned himself a reputation as one of the greatest electric guitarists of all time.

“I’m very excited to play this tour with all you guys and commemorate the launch of my solo career. It’s been an amazing journey and it still feels like it’s only beginning. I couldn’t have done it without all of you and your support throughout all these years. Looking forward to creating some magic with all of you! More is more!”

This special tribute brought together a remarkable lineup of De Niro’s collaborators, including Chazz Palminteri, Quentin Tarantino, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Walken, Martin Scorsese, and Nas, among others.

    A Star-Studded Celebration

Deniro Con was an extraordinary gathering that honored De Niro’s extensive career and contributions to cinema. The presence of industry giants and close associates underscored De Niro’s significant impact on film and his enduring legacy.

Opening Day: “Jackie Brown” Screening and Tarantino Conversation

The festivities kicked off on June 14th with a screening of “Jackie Brown” at the SVA Theater. Presented in its original 35mm format, the screening was followed by an engaging 45-minute conversation between Quentin Tarantino and Robert De Niro. The discussion delved into De Niro’s portrayal of Louis, a character marked by his minimal dialogue but profound physicality and nuanced expressions.

Tarantino admitted to a slight regret for not giving De Niro more lines, recognizing the actor’s exceptional talent with dialogue. However, he praised De Niro’s ability to convey depth through subtle gestures and expressions, capturing the complexity of a man dulled by prison but not devoid of intelligence. They also reflected on broader filmmaking aspects, such as the importance of authentic period settings and the dynamic relationships between actors and directors. Tarantino lauded De Niro’s versatility, acknowledging how he captivates audiences across diverse roles.

Day Two: “Mean Streets” and a Dialogue with Scorsese and Nas

On June 15th, the Beacon Theatre hosted a screening of “Mean Streets,” followed by a riveting conversation featuring Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, and moderated by rapper Nas. The dialogue, introduced by Tribeca co-founder Jane Rosenthal, provided a retrospective on the prolific 50-year collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro, which began with “Mean Streets” and spanned ten films, including their latest, “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Scorsese discussed the enduring relevance of “Mean Streets,” highlighting its authentic depiction of New York City’s essence, loyalty, and immigrant experiences. He shared anecdotes about the film’s production challenges, including navigating local organized crime and funding obstacles. De Niro and Scorsese emphasized the authenticity and lasting impact of their work, comparing their cinematic influence to that of top-tier musicians in their fields.

  • Ukraine’s Kommuna Lux Brings US Charity Tour to the Falcon in Hudson Valley and New York City’s Drom

Kommuna Lux, the acclaimed ‘Odesa Urban Folk’ band from Ukraine, is set to embark on a 30-city US charity tour this Summer, blending thrilling Klezmer and Ukrainian folk music to raise funds for humanitarian causes back home.

Just as the streets of their hometown of Odesa are rich with nostalgia and a diverse, bohemian Black Sea coastal vibe, Kommuna Lux’s melodies are filled with dazzling rhythms, refreshing anarchy, and plenty of joie de vivre! These conservatory-trained musicians combine traditional Klezmer, Balkan, and Urban Chanson, with a dash of Ukrainian Folk and inject it with rocket fuel for a high-energy Big Band sound from the bygone days of speakeasies and rum runners.

The first stretch of the tour will bring this unique ensemble to leading venues in the Hudson Valley, Upstate New York and New York City.  Performances will including Drom in NYC (June 21), Live at the Falcon in Marlboro (June 23), The Levitt/AMP Concert Series in Utica (June 24) and Ithaca’s Unitarian Church (June 25).

Leading Kommuna Lux is Bagrat Tsurkan, whose hot buttered voice and nonstop energy compel everyone to the dance floor. The remaining band, Volodymyr Gitin (clarinet), Oleg Vasianovich, (accordion), Andrei Okhramovich (trumpet), Yaroslav Besh (trombone), Viktor Kirilov (acoustic guitar), and Sergei Poltorak (percussion), miraculously manage to play with perfection while creating equally dizzying energy on stage. Watch an example of their live show here.

Kommuna Lux has been fundraising at their shows since 2022 and raised $16,000 in donations on their fall 2023 US tour. They created KMLX, a 501-c3 charity, after their first US tour, ensuring that 100% of donations received at their concerts are used for humanitarian aid. Koch Theater in New York City, celebrating the achievements of Broadway during the 2023-2024 season. 26 awards for a variety of categories were given out during the three-hour celebration, which was streamed on Paramount+ and CBS.com. Stereophonic won the most awards of the night, with a total of five out of the 13 they were nominated for, including best play, best scenic design of a play and best sound design of a play. The Outsiders and Merrily We Roll Along both took home four awards each, with The Outsiders winning the coveted best musical award.

Other notable successes were Appropriate, winning best revival of a play, and Suffs, winning best original score (music and/or lyrics) written for the theatre.

The night produced several special moments for both the award winners and the viewers at home. Kara Young was notably the first Black performer to ever be nominated for a Tony Award three years in a row. The third time truly was the charm, as Young won this year for the first time. A visibly surprised Daniel Radcliffe won his first Tony Award after previously acting in five separate Broadway shows, and gave an emotional acceptance speech that was capped off with a heartfelt thank-you to his parents, his wife and his son. Hillary Rodham Clinton even got onto the stage to introduce the performance of Suffs, a musical she produced, where she joked about the difficulties that come with making change.

Between the awards, performances were given throughout the night by Jay Z and Alicia Keys, the company of Hell’s Kitchen, the company of Merrily We Roll Along, host of the night, Ariana DeBose and many more.

This year was DeBose’s third year in a row of hosting the Tony Awards. Due to the at-the-time Writers Guild of America strike, DeBose hosted last year’s ceremony entirely script-free. Her return this year was a mark of the quality she upheld last year, and she delivered once again. DeBose even opened up the show with the night’s first performance.

The American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.

Pride in Times Square’s Main Stage Performances will be kicked off on Friday, June 28, with a Broadway Pride Block Party. Saturday morning, members of the New York Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice (MOERJ), NYC Unity Project, and more kick off Summer Youth Employment Program (SYED) pride. Grubhub and the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce’s pride celebration will follow, offering funds to LGBT and allied bars and restaurants.

From June 28 to 29, ViiV Healthcare will bring an interactive double decker bus into Times Square. Afterwards, the bus will be featured in NYC’s Pride March down 5th Avenue on June 30.

The next scheduled event is a performance by LBGTQ+ artists, presented by ViiV Healthcare. Finally, the Times Square Alliance will ignite the night with their third annual Big Broadway Disco. The large scale street party invites Broadway enthusiasts to dance to classic and contemporary songs and performances. DJs, performers, and and vibrant costumes will take on Times Square on Saturday, June 29, beginning at 5:15. More information is available at the following link, and all the events are free.
