She’s the German actress and amateur singer-songwriter who achieved notoriety three decades after she made the humble home recordings that were released in 2006 as the critically acclaimed Colour Green. Now the reclusive Sibylle Baier is making a rare appearance at the Saugerties’ Orpheum Theatre for the June 9 screening of Wim Wenders’ 1974 classic Alice in the Cities.
“Sibylle Baier and her daughter Julia appeared briefly in Wim Wenders’ film Alice in the Cities. The two protagonists come across Sibylle standing on the ferry, holding her daughter as she sings one of her songs entitled ‘Softly’.. Through the early 1970s, Baier made lo-fi acoustic recordings of songs she wrote for her pleasure alone, ones that Robby gathered onto a CD gifted to friends to mark his mother’s 60th birthday. One recipient was Dinosaur Jr’s J. Mascis who secured its commercial release as the 14-track collection, Colour Green, on Orange Twin label.
Baier’s breathy, stripped-back acoustic sound is often compared to Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake and a folky Nico. Her fans number musicians like Kim Gordon, who included her on a playlist of favorites in a 2015 article in the New York Times. Her evocative music has since been licensed for many projects including the films Drinking Buddies and My Salinger Year and the TV show, End of the F**cking World. A new recording, “Let Us Know,” was featured in Wenders’ film, Palermo Shooting.
Although she will not be performing live, Baier will be playing tracks from Colour Green.

The event will take place in “The Mark,” the brand-new screening room at Upstate Films’ Orpheum Theatre in Saugerties. The Mark’s most notable elements are its acoustics with its Dolby Atmos sound system, engineered with WSDG and cinema specialist Dave Berti, which provides precision sound that envelops the audience, immersing them in the heart of the film. WSDG, led by John Storyk, has previously designed venues and studios for Bruce Springsteen, UCLA, Lincoln Center, Spotify, Jay-Z, MTV, Alicia Keys, NYU, and, at the beginning of Storyk’s career, Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios.

On Friday, May 24, 2024, O+ (pronounced O Positive) hosted a benefit event in support of their new O+ Exchange Clinic, which will offer year-round health and wellness services to O+ artists and alumni. The inaugural event, held at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston, featured eight-time Grammy nominee Allison Russell as the headliner.
O+ defines itself as a national nonprofit working to help creatives of all stripes access health and wellness services, amplify the arts, and build more resilient communities in Kingston and beyond.

Local musician Lara Hope of Lara Hope & The Ark Tones, an O+ member, emceed the evening’s event. Midway through the night, Joe Concra, co-founder of O+, addressed the audience, highlighting some of their achievements and discussing the goal of providing 365 days of healthcare services. The theme of caring for artists and their community resonated throughout the night, from those on stage to the volunteers and attendees.
Emcee Lara Hope
Texas native Denitia, now based in Nashville, opened the night. Her solo performance grew more intense as the set progressed, with the power and richness of her songs deepening. Having spent several years living in the Hudson Valley, her set conveyed a sense of homecoming and kinship.

With bare feet and a smile a mile wide, Allison Russell took to the stage. Backed by an internationally built four-piece band, Russell and her crew’s performance showed why they are currently on tour with Hozier. But this night was about more than just music. Allison shared the difficulties being faced by those seeking artistic and personal freedom, encouraging all to speak their minds, and to support those oppressed.

Throughout her set, Russell dug deep into her soul, at times getting down on her knees with the songs consuming her. This was not just a show; this night was for a reason. Russell made sure all could feel what this was all about.

Allison showcased her versatility throughout the performance, seamlessly transitioning from vocals to clarinet, to banjo, and back again over the course of an hour and a half. The audience eagerly absorbed each note, growing more enthusiastic as the night unfolded. With Russell’s encouragement, everyone joined in singing ‘Demon’ from her latest album release, The Returner.

June 1, 9:00 PM: Pay homage to queer art with ICONS: A Pride Variety Show and Party at Lark Hall. The celebration begins with a pre-show party from 9-11, where there will be giveaways and teaser performances. The main show, ICONS- The Variety Show, will feature drag queens Brita Filter, Lagoona Bloo, Amanda Blair, and many more. The fun does not stop after the show. June 9, 11:30 AM: Capital Pride Parade & Festival will take place in Washington Park. Registration can be found at the following link, and proceeds go to the Pride Center of the Capital Region’s programming advocating for the LGBTQ+ community.
Troy
June 15, 2:00-6:00 PM: Join Collar City Pride for their picnic in Troy’s Prospect Park. The barbecue will feature vegan and non-vegan options, snacks, and beverages. There is a suggested donation on a sliding scale, and everyone is invited to bring lawn games, speakers, and frisbees.
July 14: The pride celebration continues into July, with performances by Typhoid Mary and DJ Lovely Candela. More queer artists and drag performers are to be announced. Good Karma Studios will also be performing an acrobatic act. There will be a family section with balloon animals and a drag story hour. There will also be over 40 vendors, most of whom are from Rensselaer County and LGBTQ+ owned and operated. Schenectady
June 1, 10:00 AM: The Dynasty will introduce their first ever wrestling event for this year’s pride celebration. “Sounds Gay, I’m In” will be held at Gateway Park. Saratoga Springs
May 30, 2:45: Join the Ballston Spa High School in the raising of the pride flag.
June 27, 6:00 PM: LGBTQ parents and children are invited to Saratoga Arts’ “POP” Gathering (parents of pride). The event will feature arts, crafts, and community building activities for the whole family. More information can be found here. Saratoga Arts hosts the event monthly, so dates will be available all year!
July 11, 6:30 PM: Join Saratoga Pride members for their Cornhole League. The informal, weekly drop-in league costs $15 a ticket, which offers guests a 20% discount on all food and drinks. Tournaments will be held at Saratoga Winery, and guests are encouraged to support the local restaurant. There will be more sessions every Thursday throughout the summer, with the tournament finals on August 29.
June 23, 2:00 PM: Saratoga’s Pride festival will return to High Rock Park this year, with an after party to follow. The family friendly event will feature live music, family activities, and community groups. Food and ice cream will also be available for purchase on site.
Lake George

June 20, 6:00 PM: Binghamton Pride Coalition will host a clothing swap from June 3-10. Participants are asked to donate gently used, clean clothes and accessories at Butterfields. On June 20, the clothes will be organized and displayed for people to choose. There is a suggested donation of $10, which will be donated to Identity LGBTQ+ Youth Center in Binghamton. July 1-July 7: Commemorate the Fire Island Invasion of 1976 by recreating the event with the New York LGBT community. A longtime landmark in LGBTQ+ history, Fire Island has served as a safe haven for members of the community to express themselves freely. In 1976, after a restaurant in Fire Island Pines denied entry to a visitor in drag, the visitor and their friends stormed into the Pines dressed in drag. In Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park, the Beacon Sloop Club holds its annual volunteer-run Strawberry Festival. This year, the event takes place on Sunday, June 9 from noon to 5 pm.
The beloved Strawberry Festival brings the Beacon community together to protect and conserve the Hudson River. Music on two solar stages, one dedicated to children, entertains festival-goers throughout the day, accompanied by baked goods and desserts made from locally grown strawberries.
The Strawberry Festival’s 2024 music program includes the Beacon High School Student Chorus, Bindlestick Bill, David & Jacob Bernz, Eric Person Quartet, Jonathan Kruk, Judith Tulloch Band, Karen Brooks & Melissa Ortquist, Lydia Adams Davis, Rob May, Mighty Girl, Steve & Shirl Kaplan, Spook Handy, Ubaka Hill Drumsong Orchestra. Additionally, the event hosts free activities for children and families, such as clay modeling and pinch pot making.
The time-honored community tradition goes back decades. Many guests who remember coming as children are now bringing their children to the festival, making it one of Beacon’s most special summer festivals. This year, visitors can enjoy free sails on the replica 19th Century ferry sloop, the Woody Guthrie on the first sailing day of the season.
Kids are invited to visit the Environmental Tent and learn about the Hudson River and the fascinating creatures that live in it, or to stop by the various craft activities that populate the grounds. Festival-goers can choose from an exciting lineup of vendors and artisans, including NGYcraftworks, known for their hardwood products for the kitchen and home.
At the E-Tent, children and adults alike can find information about the ecology of the Hudson River and its extensive watershed. Younger children can enjoy coloring pages of a Hudson River Creature Activity Book, made by the NYS Dept. of Health. Clearwaters Tideline Program Director, Eli Schloss will also speak on boating navigation and basic compass techniques at 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm.
In a quaint corner of the Hudson Valley, bordering Massachusetts lies Spencertown. This small hamlet is home to the Spencertown Academy, an institution dedicated to education and preservation of the arts. The academy strives to foster a sense of community by promoting the arts and humanities to all ages.
For over 50 years, the Spencertown Academy has excelled in this mission, hosting a slew of traveling musicians and artists, as well as holding numerous annual events. The venue has hosted performances supporting local talent, such as one highlighting blues women of the Capital Region. Additionally they have hosted national stars, like grammy-nominated singer-songwriters Gary Lucas and Guy Davis.
The Academy also promotes community involvement in the arts, hosting free writing, and blues workshops for all to attend.
The Spencertown Academy Arts Center’s history dates back almost two centuries to 1845. At its founding, the academy was not an arts center, but rather a teachers school. Founded by pastor Timothy Woodbridge, the academy was open to the region’s boys and girls, an uncommon practice at the time.
By 1847, construction on the schoolhouse had been completed, leaving the Academy’s current structure. The two-story high Greek revival building featured imposing ionic columns, a large front portico, and a high gabled roof, making it an architectural marvel of the region. In 1973, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural significance.
The Academy continued life as a public school until its closure in 1970. Desperate to save this community icon, Spencertown residents founded the Spencertown Academy Society. This society undertook a 10 year restoration of the building, allowing for its reopening as a community arts center. Following the tumult of the 2008 recession, the community banded together to eliminate the academy’s debt and establish it as a volunteer-based organization.
Today, the Academy hosts rich arts spaces, both indoor and outdoor. At its center, a 110 seat auditorium holds the Academy’s concerts, theater performances, and film screenings. The Academy’s Backer Room is a smaller, more intimate space in a restored classroom, used for its educational programs. The interior of the Academy also features two art galleries, featuring art and artisan pieces from locals.
In addition to this is the sprawling outdoor spaces, home to many of the Academies annual events. The Academy hosts the annual Hidden Gardens event, offering tours of the Spencertown Green’s manicured landscapes. This event also hosts a plethora of local craft and antique vendors. Other outdoor events, like Twilight in the Garden, and Community Day offer a chance for Spencertown’s residents to get together and enjoy food, and live music in an outdoor setting.
The Academy remains dedicated to the community, and especially its youth, hosting events to get them involved in the arts. The annual Festival of Books, sees the Academy transformed into a massive library, offering books for all ages. Additionally, the event features book talks, live readings, and other special activities.
The Academy has a busy upcoming season, with many events scheduled for the Summer. On May 31, the Academy will host The Lovestruck Balladeers playing an old-fashioned mix of Americana and swing. Continuing their dedication to arts education, the Academy will host a poetry and prose writing workshop on June 15. This workshop will focus on the Summer landscapes of Columbia County, and how nature has influenced past poets. In terms of theater, the Academy will show a production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest on June 21. The upcoming summer season continues to show the Academy’s dedication for the performing arts, and local arts education.

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts will be returning this year with a variety of acts throughout the summer, with shows running between June and September.
This year, a variety of camping options are available, with two separate sites within 0.5 miles of the venue being available for tent-only camping, glamping and car and RV camping. The 16,000-person venue will feature performances from Phish, Pretty Lights, Luke Bryan, Limp Bizkit and many more.

In the heart of the Hudson Valley, just 30 minutes south of Albany lies Catskill’s Bridge Street Theatre. The theater is a non-profit seeking to enhance the cultural life of Greene County through the independent production of musical and theater performances.
Greene County’s seat of Catskill is home to the Bridge Street Theatre opened in 2014. Since its founding, the theater has sought to set itself apart from the region’s other performing arts centers, with a focus on accessibility. The theater’s board focuses on highlighting overlooked musical and theater artists, even commissioning new works for the stage. They also strive to keep ticket prices low to make sure their performances can reach the widest possible audiences.
Since 2014, the Bridge Street Theatre has been a haven for cutting edge performance art. The theater has hosted over 62 musical performances, 84 plays, and 33 dance performances. It has staged productions of Monty Python’s Spamalot, Frankenstein and the Epic of Gilgamesh. Amongst these productions was The Shaggs’ Philosophy of the World, a stage retelling of The Shaggs’ legendary outsider music career. Additionally, the theater has also hosted a decade’s worth of musical performances ranging from classical to bluegrass. These concerts include San Francisco’s award winning Zelos Saxophone Quartet, and Capital Region folk band Ramblin Jug Stompers.
Downtown Catskill, NY
The theater’s story begins with its founder John Sowle. Following decades of acting and theater production in both San Francisco and Manhattan, Sowle relocated to Catskill in 2008. Following the move, Sowle focused his attention on finding a permanent home for his nomadic theater production company Kaliyuga Arts.
This plan came to fruition in 2013, when Sowle purchased a derelict air curtain factory just outside of downtown Catskill. After a year of renovations, the abandoned factory was transformed into a state of the art 12,000 square foot center for performing arts.

The theater’s premises house many venues for performing arts. At the center of the theater, is the Charles and Priscilla Patterson Mainstage. This auditorium has seating for 84 people, making it a perfect setting for the theater’s major productions.
There is additionally a smaller cabaret-style concert space, known as “The Speakeasy.” This area also currently serves as the theater’s lobby, but can be quickly converted into a performance space, with a small raised stage allowing for intimate shows. The venue also houses “The Big Room,” a space to host sculpture and art exhibitions. The theater values the comfort of its performers, housing dressing rooms, a lounge and living spaces for visiting artists.
The theater prides itself in collaboration with Catskill’s local youth. As it is located next to Catskill High School, the theater provides opportunities for local students to get involved in theater production and performance, getting a new generation involved in music and the arts.
The Bridge Street Theatre has a busy upcoming Summer season, with a host of performances set for the near future. On June 1, the theater will welcome world-renowned sitarist Ustad Shafaat Khan. Khan is famous for his simultaneous vocals, sitar, and tabla playing, which has spread appreciation for Indian classical music across the world. His performances have taken him around the globe, playing with legends like Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles.
On June 8, the theater will be hosting the local magician Thomas Baker for an all-ages journey through the history of magic. The Saugerties-based illusionist puts a modern twist on classic magic tricks, all while sharing fun stories from throughout his life.
Finally, on June 22, the theater will host the 7th Bridge Street Belly Dance event. This event will weave together dance, music, and poetry to tell a story of how pain and beauty go together in life. Featuring dance from multi-disciplinary artist Jesse Sykes, and the poetry of Alysia Quinn, the event will tell a story of innovation and personal growth.

Basilica Hudson announced their lineup of events for the 2024 season. Basilica Hudson is celebrating their new renovation with an action packed 2024 season. Summer events were kicked off May 18 & 19 with their 24 hour drone. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the 24 hour drone is a non stop 24 hour concert. A nearly religious experience, listeners challenge their endurance with the non stop music.
The Climate Action Film Festival will also be returning to Basilica’s North Hall on May 31st. The Festival showcases international stories of human bravery in the face of climate change. The Basilica will also be hosting Jupiter Nights throughout the summer. The event offers live music, food, art, and beautiful views of the sunset at Hudson Valley.
Additionally, the Basilica will be throwing two parties over the summer: (Freak) Flag Day and All The Bodies. (Freak) Flag Day will be a dark, gothwave dance party under the fireworks. All The Bodies will be hosted at Lil Deb’s restaurant on June 21 in celebration of Pride Month. Soundscape, a weekend of art and music, will also be returning this September. Farm & Flea will be returning this year for the summer and the holiday season. Farm & Flea offers a sustainable, local alternative to the mania of Black Friday.

The Ashokan Center in Olivebridge, NY will hold The Spirit of Aloha ukulele concert on Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 pm, to kick off their 11th annual Uke Revue.
This special concert will feature 6 remarkable ukulele players from all across the country coming together to honor the tradition of playing the instrument. Additionally, the concert previews the weekend-long celebration where musicians come together with enthusiastic learners to teach and play ukulele together.
Musician, Ben Hassenger, known as the “Ukulele Ambassador of Michigan,” will host the festival. Hassenger is a strong advocate for ukulele playing and education. Currently, he uses his passion to spread the teachings of the ukulele in the form of Uke Fest, which he’s been the coordinator of since 2020.
I like to call the ukulele the ‘most folk of folk instruments’ because it brings folks together. Rarely do you see one uke player sitting by themselves; more often it’s a group of two, three, or dozens playing together and singing. It’s a communal music experience and that’s one of the many things that makes it so very special.”

Along with Ben Hassenger, the Uke Revue will include performances from Lil Rev, Kelly Jolly, Victoria “Viggy” Kolasinski, Dani Joy, and Perry Stauffer. All six musicians will be participating in the weekend’s activities as educators.

This September, author Daniel Rachel will stop in Manhattan and Saugerties to celebrate the US release of his book Too Much Too Young. Akashic Books will release the British best-seller for American audiences on June 4th.
Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story is a definitive history of the British Ska scene of the 1970s and 80s. The book discusses Ska’s Caribbean island origins, and how British Youth conquered the airways with it throughout the 1980s. This 2 Tone scene was a multi-racial movement using ska as a vehicle to fight racism, right wing extremism and other social issues of Thatcher-era England.
Rachel’s book is a modern classic of music history, receiving praise from critics and musicians alike. The book features interviews with members of legendary ska groups, like The Beat, Madness, and The Specials, giving it a very grounded, informative and intimate feeling. Additionally, the book features an introduction by Pauline Black, lead singer of the 2 Tone band The Selecter.

Before his writing career, Rachel had a fruitful music career. He began as lead singer of the Birmingham Britpop group Rachels Basement, before launching a successful solo folk-pop career. Since 2013, Rachel has focused on his writings, which have covered topics throughout British music history. Whether they are about Ska, Britpop or David Bowie, his books have garnered much critical praise. Too Much Too Young has been especially successful, being named book of the year by The Sunday Times, Louder Than War and many other publications.
To celebrate the release of his book in the US, Rachel is planning a cross-country book tour. The tour is set to begin on August 23 in Los Angeles, featuring an interview with Specials guitarist Lynval Golding. This book tour includes two New York locations, with stops in Saugerties and Manhattan. On Monday, September 9, the tour will stop at Saugerties’s Orpheum Theatre. On Thursday, September 12, the tour will stop at Rough Trade’s NYC store in Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center.
