The American Classical Orchestra will perform Bach’s infamous B Minor Mass at the Alice Tully Hall with the Aco Chorus on March 7.
Mass in B Minor, BWV 232 by Johann Sebastian Bach is a musical setting of the complete Latin Mass, the 1749 work includes nine arias and duets, 14 ensemble sections for vocal groups of various sizes, and a range of instrumental solos in numerous styles. The piece is one of Bach’s best-loved vocal works, the B Minor Mass is widely considered to be the crowning achievement of the Baroque era, since he completed it a year before his death in 1750.
The composition as it is known today did not originate as a titled whole in any of Bach’s surviving documents. It was uncovered by his son C.P. E. Bach as a collection of his father’s hand-written scores grouped together inside four folders. The manuscripts were organized in four parts: The Kyrie and Gloria, followed by the Credo, the Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. Once published, the four parts became known as the B Minor Mass. Of note, Bach managed to complete the Mass while nearly blinded by cataracts. He subsequently underwent two unsuccessful eye surgeries using questionable methods, which worsened his condition.
The performance will be directed by the founder and Artistic Director Thomas Crawford who founded two other Connecticut orchestras: the Fairfield Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Old Fairfield Academy, the period instrument offshoot of the Fairfield Orchestra, was later renamed the American Classical Orchestra in 1999. With the Fairfield Orchestra, Crawford conducted the world premiere of Keith Jarrett’s Bridge of Light at Alice Tully Hall, subsequently recorded on the ECM label.
Featured soloists are soprano and crossover artist Kristen Hahn, who recently appeared at the Kennedy Center in Hello Dolly, soprano Nola Richardson, hailed by The NY Times for her “beautiful tone;” countertenor Reginald Mobley, who has forged a stellar career across Baroque and Classical repertoire; noted Bach interpreter tenor Steven Soph, who was praised for his “impressive clarity and color” by the NY Times and Baroque music specialist bass Steven Eddy, a 1st Prize winner of the 2019 Oratorio Society of New York Competition.

Blues musician Marcus King has announced the release of his new album titled, Mood Swings releasing April 5. Along with the album, Marcus King plans to tour throughout North America and Europe starting March 7. The tour will kick off at Love Rocks NYC and feature 6 dates in New York State.
New album Mood Swings will feature 11 tracks and will be showcased during the upcoming tour. The album was produced by legendary producer Rick Rubin who says the singing and guitar playing on the album are “from another planet.”
Marcus King is known for his electro drum stomp, his richly soul vocals, and his bluesy, jazzy guitar playing. His new album, however, takes his audience down a new path of sound. King combines elements as diverse as modern pop, R&B, aughts hip hop, piano driven classic rock and the warm production and symphonic instrumentation of classic era soul, R&B and jazz.

K-pop band Oneus has announced they are returning on a major North American Tour “La Dolce Vita”, with the 11-city tour featuring a stop at Madison Square Garden on March 24.
South Korean pop band Oneus first released their debut EP Light Us in 2019 with “Valkyrie” serving as its lead single. The song was received with positive reviews and quickly gained attention in the international markets by charting in top ten of several countries’ iTunes charts, including at number one in the US and Australia. In 2021 the pop band released their first full-length album Devil, consisting of eleven tracks, including the lead single “No Diggity”.
Oneus members, Ravn, Seoho, Leedo, Keonhee, Hwanwoong and Xion came up with their band name which has two meanings. One is that the members came together by gathering strength from every one of their fans, the other meaning symbolizes Oneus’ mission to bring together regular people who will work side-by-side to create a united world. “Oneus” in Korean also can be spelled as “One Earth”. The band is seemingly eager to get back in front of their fans and follow up from their Blood Moon tour in 2022.
In addition to the success of other K-pop acts like Blackpink and BTS, Korean dramas like “Squid Game” have also contributed to the appeal of Korean pop and culture in the US. It goes without saying that local and NY K-pop fans will be thrilled to see one of the South Korean boy bands perform in their area soon.
“La Dolce Vita” will be the band’s third tour after their Fly With Us tour in 2019 and the Blood Moon tour in 2022.

The Stone Pony, an iconic venue and cornerstone of musical history, proudly announced its 50th-anniversary celebration. In honor of this monumental milestone, the New Jersey State Legislature, Monmouth County, and the City of Asbury Park united to proclaim Feb. 8 as “Stone Pony Day.”

The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, one of the world’s best-known music venues, opened its doors on Feb. 8, 1974, in a building that formerly housed a popular restaurant called Mrs. Jay’s. Founders John P. “Jack” Roig and Robert “Butch” Pielka first met while working in a club on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, and the rest was history, Locals like Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and Steve Van Zandt helped put the venue on the map, while today’s top artists and rising stars continue building a musical legacy. Artists that have graced the stage include Elvis Costello, The Ramones, Cheap Trick, Green Day, Oasis, No Doubt, blink-182, The Band, Iggy Pop, AFI, Warren Zevon, Joan Osborne, Luke Combs, Weezer, The 1975, Bleachers, and many more.

On Thursday, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m., the venue will kick off a yearlong celebration with two weeks of special events, beginning with the proclamation ceremony that features distinguished local dignitaries. Following the proclamation the public celebration “Cheers to 50!” starts at 7 p.m. Original owner Jack Roig and General Manager Caroline O’Toole will raise a toast to 50 years of music and memories, accompanied by the Pony’s original house DJ, Lee Mrowicki, spinning the greatest hits.
On Feb. 9, Asbury Park’s The Parlor Mob is reuniting for a special show at 7 p.m. The celebration continues on Feb. 10 with an event presented by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music, titled “Celebrating The Stone Pony Anniversary: Spotlighting 50 Legendary Years of Music Memories.” The event features Stone Pony founder Jack Roig, legendary musicians, impresarios, and other influential figures sharing intimate stories and memories.

Feb. 16 and 17 hosts special shows by the Jukes, led by the charismatic Southside Johnny. They have graced the Stone Pony’s stage numerous times throughout its 50 years, leaving a mark on its rich musical history. From energetic live performances to the creation of timeless anthems, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes have been integral to The Stone Pony’s narrative, embodying the spirit and soul of the vibrant music scene.
This spring, just as Election 2024 starts to warm up, Lost Radio Rounders will present a musical/historical program, titled “Songs America Voted By, 1840-1940.”
With six public performances of the “Songs America Voted By” program lined up, the group starts in March with shows at libraries, museums, historical societies and college campuses.
Back before TV, radio, and even PA systems, political parties would produce small booklets containing lyrics extoling their candidates virtues, while trashing the other guy. And in this time frame, it was all men running for office (how times have changed!)
The booklets would suggest that those lyrics should be sung to the tune of popular melodies of the day, in the form of parodies. The program also includes issue songs about women’s suffrage, abolition and temperance.
The “big bang” of campaign singing was led by the long defunct Whig party in 1840, and FDR’s use of radio for his fireside chats would put the first big nail in the coffin of campaign songs by 1940.
Although the program from Lost Radio Rounders does not deal with any aspect of the coming election, the program may certainly attempt to prove that “the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

In addition to her fabulous music career, Barbra Streisand was also the first woman to write, produce, direct and star in a major motion picture. She is also the only recording artist in history earning number one albums over six decades.
New York is where it began, growing up in Brooklyn, on to Catskills summer camp which she hated, Summer Stock at Malden Bridge Playhouse at 15, the Cecilwood Theatre in Fishkill, then her beginnings in New York Nightclubs. Later on with success, Hello Dolly! would film scenes in West Point and Garrison, then scenes from The Way We Were were shot in Schenectady.
Singing as a start, was a way to earn a living. Early on, success came from the musical and film versions of Funny Girl.
From her early career and throughout it, Barbra Streisand’s talents were often overshadowed by society’s labels pertaining to beauty and unfair comments directed towards her. She serenely handled this and carried on with creativity, not letting it defeat her. Thankfully by the time she reached twenty, some would refer to her looks as “pharaonic” “Nefertiti” and “Babylonian Queen” appreciating the beauty that she so obviously had in addition to her immense talent and drive.

As she mentions straightaway beginning the memoir, the negativity pertaining to her appearance was disheartening. As she also points out, it would stick with her throughout her career.
She had been asked to write her memoir for so long, finally deciding it was time to set things straight and correct any misconceptions lingering about her.
Her memoir is an inspiration to anyone that doubts following their dreams, because success “actually makes you more of who you really are” she states.
Like with so many talented and creative people, perhaps Barbra Streisand’s journey into music and theater stemmed from early dissatisfaction with everyday life being unfulfilling. At 14, journeying into Manhattan seeing marquees everywhere showed her seemingly “endless possibilities.”
Movies showed her a world “so much more vivid and alive than anything I was experiencing.” Barbra recalls the excitement of her first play Teahouse of the August Moon at Malden Bridge Playhouse where she performed with her best friend. She refers to that time as a “glorious summer.”
A local newspaper gave her performances great reviews, bolstering her confidence. Not unlike Ella Fitzgerald, she declared on the playground that one day she would be famous.
It was in the Catskills at 13, that her mother was told about a studio where you could make your own record; Barbra and her mother would then go to Nola Studios in December 1955 to do that. She recalls how inspirational that experience was for her. One of the memoir’s themes is that of honesty.
Barbra Streisand gives us a compelling glimpse into the creative process of her movies and albums, her journey from struggle to star, along with personal anecdotes on her friendships and romances. Life includes loss, and loss is another of the memoir’s themes with what comes across as the pain of losing her father while she was so young and some of her close friends and colleagues.
When once asked: “How do you hold a note so long?” “Because I wanted to” was her response.
Barbra Streisand has received the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Kennedy Center Honor, the National Medal of Arts, France’s Légion d’Honneur, and America’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She founded The Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai, raising awareness for more research into women’s heart disease.
The Streisand Foundation, which she established in 1986, has supported national organizations working on preservation of the environment, voter education, the protection of civil liberties and civil rights, women’s issues, and nuclear disarmament. In 2021 she launched the Barbra Streisand Institute at UCLA, dedicated to finding solutions to the most vital social issues.
Coachella’s 2024 lineup will include five artists from New York between all three days of both weekends. Among these artists includes Lana Del Rey, who also headlines the festival along with Tyler the Creator and Doja Cat.
Lana Del Rey, born in Manhattan, will be the opening performer on Friday, April 12 and 19. The Bronx native Ice-Spice and Brooklyn-based indie-pop band The Drums will perform at the festival on Saturday, April 13 and 20. Performers on Coachella’s final nights include Brooklyn-born Bebe Rexha and rock band Taking Back Sunday from Long Island.

Grammy-nominated singer Lana Del Rey was born in Manhattan, and raised in Northern New York State. In 2005, Del Rey moved to New York City to pursue a career in the Music Industry. Her self-titled debut studio album was released in 2010, and her second studio album, Born to Die (2012), put the New York native on the map. Since then, Del Rey has released a total of nine studio albums, most recently 2023’s Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, and has been nominated for and won several awards. Currently, the singer is up for four Grammy Awards at the 2024 Ceremony, including Album of the Year and Best Alternative Music Album for her latest release.

Born and raised in the Bronx, rapper Ice Spice is a young and emerging artist in the music industry, and this year will be her first time performing at the Coachella festival. Her debut extended play, Like, was released in 2023, and her debut studio album, Y2K, is due for release this year. The rapper also collaborated with English singer and record producer on the song “Boy’s a Liar.”

Indie pop band The Drums was initially formed in 2008, by Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham as Goat Explosion, and later added Adam Kessler and Connor Hanwick. Graham exited the band in 2016, and since then Pierce has operated The Drums as a solo project. The Drums’ self-titled debut album was released in 2010. Since then, The Drums’ has released six albums, most recently Jonny (2023.)

Brooklyn native Bebe Rexha first found success as a songwriter, with credits on Eminem’s single “The Monster” as well as other songs for Shinee, Selena Gomez, and Nick Jonas, among others. Her debut studio album, Expectations, was released in 2018, and was preceded by its lead single “I’m a Mess.” One week before the release of Expectation, Rexha performed live 2018 Summer Jam Music Festival, the same day on which “I’m a Mess” was released. Since then, she has released three albums, most recently 2023’s Bebe, and has been nominated for and won several awards.

Taking Back Sunday was formed in November 1999 by guitarists Eddie Reyes and Jesse Lachey in the Long Island town of Amityville. The band is currently made up of four members, John Nolan (lead guitar, keyboards, vocals,) Adam Lazzara (lead vocals,) Mark O’Connell (drums, percussion,) and Shaun Cooper (bass guitar.) Their debut studio album, Tell All Your Friends, was released in 2002, and their eighth and most recent work, 152 (2023,) was their first studio in seven years since 2016’s Tidal Wave.

Electronic-duo Odesza have announced they are embarking on a farewell tour with support from Bob Moses, Ben Böhmer, Drama and Golden Features. The Last Goodbye Finale features two dates at MSG on June 21 and 22.
The Odesza duo consists of Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight and the two formed their electro pop band in 2012 shortly before they graduated from Western Washington University. The band took their name influence from the name of Mill’s uncle’s sunket vessel named after the Ukrainian city of Odessa. Since the spelling of “Odessa” was already being used by another Scottish synth band, the duo instead chose to use a form of the Hungarian spelling replacing “ss” with “sz” as in Odesza.

In April 2013, the duo released the deluxe edition of The Last Goodbye album addinging singles “Hopeful” and “Two Be Yours”, as well as VIP remixes of “All We Need” and “Sun Models”, which had previously only been performed live. The duo later announced their “The Last Goodbye” tour in support of the album which began in June of 2022, totaling over 40 shows across North America. The Chill wave duo appeared in major music festivals including Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, Lollapalooza and Life Is Beautiful.
In January 2024, the duo announced a “Finale” slate of performances for the album, scheduled for Summer 2024 with two stops at the Madison Square Garden on June 21 and 22.
