Peach At The Beach spawned from the annual Peach Music Festival in Scranton, PA. The Allman Brothers Band started the festival in 2012. Each Summer, the festival has brought jam bands from around the world to the Montage Mountain Resort for concert-goers to enjoy. Since its beginning, artists such as Santana, the Black Crowes, and Ween have played the festival. This year marks a shift in venue, with the festival relocating to Atlantic City’s Island Waterpark for the Summer. The festival will feature shows for all ticket-holders on the main Peach Stage. Additionally, General Admission+, VIP and Super VIP ticket holders can access early waterpark DJ and artist sets.

The festival will kick off for premium ticket-holders at 11:00am with special waterpark DJ sets. The waterpark concerts will feature sets by DJ King Mega, DJ Logic, and Uncle Jesse. The waterpark set will also include a show by Asbury Park’s Dogs In a Pile. Jersey native guitarist Jimmy Law and drummer Joe Babick founded the band in 2019 with help from a host of Berklee-trained musicians. They combine jazz, rock, and funk to create psychedelic journeys for their audiences.

Doors open for the festival’s Peach Stage at 2:00pm. The Peach Stage is located outside the waterpark, and will host 5 performances throughout the afternoon and evening.

Mykal Rose, from legendary reggae band Black Uhuru, and a staple of the genre since the early 1970s will kick off the festival with a 3:00pm set. In 1984, Rose and Black Uhuru won the first Grammy for Best Reggae Album for their record Anthem. Since the 1990s, Rose has toured the world, spreading his iconic roots reggae stylings.

Rose’s set will be followed by a performance by Karina Rykman. Rykman’s journey into indie and jam rock stardom began in her youth in New York City. By the time of her graduation from NYU, Rykman was playing alongside Vulfpeck, Les Claypool, and Sean Ono Lennon. Rykman is known for her combination of indie pop with scorching distorted rock. Since beginning her career, Rykman has headlined festivals like Bonnarroo, and played on shows like Late Night with Seth Meyers. This performance comes after the release of Rykman’s 2023 album Joyride produced by Phish’s Trey Anastasio. She will perform a 4:00pm set.

    Peach At The Beach

The highlight of the Festival is a performance by Trouble No More recreating the Allman Brothers’ iconic 1972 album Eat a Peach. The band includes all-star musicians who are dedicated to recreating the Allman Brothers’ early catalog. Their guitarist Brandon Niederauer has shared the stage with everyone from Buddy Guy to Lady Gaga. The band additionally features vocalist Lamar Williams Jr., son of the Allman Brothers band’s bassist, and 5x Grammy-nominated keyboardist Peter Levin. During their recreation of Eat a Peach, the band will play Allman Brothers hits, including “Melissa,” and “Blue Sky.” The band will begin their set at 5:30pm.

Trouble No More will be followed by a second 7:15pm set by Dogs In a Pile. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead will then close out the festival with 2 sets beginning at 9:00pm. Joe Russo formed Almost Dead in Brooklyn in 2013 to perform classic tracks from the Grateful Dead. Since their start, the band has played with legends like John Mayer, Ween, and Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. Almost Dead has previously sold out shows at venues including Red Rocks, the Brooklyn Bowl, and the Peach Music Festival. Rolling Stone even named their 2018 Peach Music Festival performance as “Best Scene-Stealer,” saying Almost Dead takes “improvisational jam rock to the nth degree.”

Festivities are not limited to July 13th, with special pre and post festival parties. On July 12th, Philadelphia-based jam band the Disco Biscuits will perform at the Showboat Resort’s Bourbon Ballroom. Saturday, July 13th will also feature a special “Peach After Dark” set at the Bourbon Ballroom. • Cooperstown Summer Music Festival Announces Lineup

A prior Cooperstown Summer Music Festival concert at the Christ Episcopal Church

The Cooperstown Summer Music Festival has prided itself in presenting a high variety of quality shows for over 20 years. Founded in 1999, the festival has hosted over 100 artists in its history. In its 25 years of existence, the festival has exhibited classical, cabaret, and even special children’s concerts. Performance Today, the most popular classical radio program, has also frequently featured festival concerts.

“Our new season features an impressive collection of performances that will bring best-in-class artists in a wide variety of genres to perform for audiences in Cooperstown,”

    – Linda Chesis, Festival founder

The Miró Quartet will kick off the season with a July 18th program titled “Voices of Home.” Beginning in 1995, the Austin-based quartet has made a name for itself as one of the most celebrated classical groups. The band takes its name from surrealist painter Joan Miró, with much of their music reflecting themes of imagination and fantasy. The quartet has previously toured across the United States, Europe, and Asia, receiving critical acclaim wherever they go. The July 18th show, titled “Voices of Home,” will tackle themes like nostalgia and yearning. It will feature compositions by Franz Joseph Haydn, Caroline Shaw, Kevin Puts, and George Walker. This concert will take place at 7pm at Cooperstown’s Farmers’ Museum.

July 25th will see a performance by the Caroga Arts Ensemble, titled “American Journey.” Cellist Kyle Price founded the ensemble in 2019, as part of the Caroga Arts Collective. The ensemble features prizewinning instrumentalists, music school faculty, and members of chamber groups. Since its founding, the ensemble has played at Chicago’s Symphony Center, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and more. Their July 25th show will feature pieces by American composers, such as Aaron Copland, John Corigliano, and more. The concert will take place at Cooperstown’s Farmers’ Museum at 7pm.

Pianist Richard Goode will perform a selection of Beethoven pieces on July 30th. Famous for his emotional interpretations of classical and romantic pieces, Goode has become one of the most acclaimed pianists of our day. He has played concerts across the United States and Europe, and has hosted multiple music masterclasses. As part of this concert, Goode will perform some of Beethoven’s later work, illustrating the emotional depth of his playing. The concert will take place 7pm at the Otesaga Resort Hotel.

Grammy award-winning vocalist Catherine Russell will perform a blues and jazz selection on August 6th. Coming from a musical family in New York, Russell has spent much of her life performing. She has previously toured with legends like Steely Dan, Paul Simon, and Cyndi Lauper. Her third album Inside This Heart of Mine reached #1 on the iTunes jazz charts upon release. Since then she has won various awards, including a Grammy for her work on the Boardwalk Empire Soundtrack. NPR hailed Russell’s vocals, saying she “wails like a horn and whispers like a snake in the garden of Eden.” She will perform at the Otesaga Resort Hotel at 7pm.

August 16th will feature two performances as part of the program’s Family Music Fest. The concerts will be hosted by Justin Jay Hines, percussionist for the NY Philharmonic Young People’s Orchestra. These family friendly performances will begin with an interactive workshop. During this workshop, kids will learn how to make instruments from natural materials, and craft different beats. The workshop will end with a performance using these handmade instruments. These workshops will be followed by a performance from Hines. The first performance will take place at Origins cafe at 10:30am. It will be followed by a second 3pm performance at the Farmers’ Museum. These performances are free, but registration is required.

The festival will conclude with an August 20th performance titled “Bach Again.” This performance will feature harpsichordist Bradley Brookshire, cellist Wolfram Koessel, flautist Linda Chessis, and violinist Rachell Ellen Wong. The night will celebrate the musical genius of Johann Sebastian Bach, featuring renditions of his instrumental sonatas. • Geneva Music Festival wraps 14th season

Well, the instruments are packed up, the chairs are empty. But the spirit of Geneva Music Festival lingers on. For 14 years, musicians have come to Geneva for three weeks of the early summer to collaborate, perform together, and share their talents with audiences from across the Finger Lakes.

This season presented a beautiful circle, with opening band Biriba Union concluding their electric concert with an Appalachian fiddle tune, and The Brothers Blue closing out the festival season with their homegrown fiddle music.

final resident artists’ concert, Night and Day, photo credit to Jan Regan. Geneva Music Festival

The Night and Day resident artists’ finale was a gem in an already excellent themed season. It was also the most visually descriptive, with the musicians introducing their pieces with imagery like water over the sea and light through leaves, in a poetic synesthesia that remains with you even after the music has faded.

A highlight of this season was the world premiere of a Mark Olivieri piece, “Artifacts of a Valiant Past”, commissioned by Director Geoffry Herd specifically for the concert theme this year. Olivieri, composer and associate professor of music at HWS, said that he wanted to play with the idea of consciousness and memory as encompassing the theme of light and dark, and commented after the Thursday night concert, “That was just one of the most intuitive and energetic performances that I’ve had the pleasure of to hear, and I was very excited for them to be performing my piece. I look forward to working with them again in the future.”

The final concert also featured an intellectually challenging modern piece, “Light and Matter”, composed by Kaija Saariaho. Less approachable than the shimmering Haydn “Sunrise” string quartet earlier that evening, it presented a different form of light – light that is harsh, competing with darkness, struggling as it fades in and out of existence.

And it would be remiss not to mention Anna Petrova’s stunning piano solo at Night and Day. Since GMF is primarily a chamber music festival, there are generally few solos on the program. Petrova’s rendition of Scriabin’s Sonata No. 2, which was performed entirely from memory with a breathtaking finesse during the first movement and a tightly controlled passion that made the entire piano shake during the second, was an incredible treat. She received an immediate standing ovation both nights.

After the performance on Thursday night, Mark Gearan, President of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, commented, “I think as a Genevan, for 14 years this festival … every year … gets bigger, longer, more interesting, with a brilliant theme. We’re just so fortunate to be in these intimate settings and to have the musicians share their talent, describe it – the way they describe the music is such a highlight. Hobart and William Smith is proud to have it on our campus, but I think for everyone here the range of talent and musicians coming from literally all over the world, it’s great for Geneva.”

After the emotional intensity of the violin on Thursday and Friday night, it was a delight to finish out the season with the violin’s down-home brother for some danceable fiddle music outdoors.

The local bluegrass band The Brothers Blue brings home the special sense of place that the Finger Lakes offers – where else are you likely to hear bluegrass singers mention “glacial till” nostalgically in their music? Even a passing shower Sunday afternoon couldn’t dampen the audience’s enthusiasm, with attendees dancing through the rain. “These guys are awesome, I’ve seen them three or four other places. I’m very much a fan of this event and the whole [GMF] series, it’s incredible, absolutely incredible.” Said Dresden resident Donna Rae Sutherland.

Geneva Music Festival notes the following sponsoring organizations this year:

    •      Rochester Area Community Foundation
    •      Nelson B. Delavan Foundation
    •      Max and Marian Farash Foundation
    •      Brenda & Dave Rickey Family Foundation
    •      Williams Family Foundation
    •      Wyckoff Family Foundation
    •      New York State Council on the Arts
    •      National Endowment for the Arts

The Geneva Music Festival was founded in 2011 by Geneva, New York violinist Geoffrey Herd as a weekend of chamber music in his hometown. The festival has grown over its fourteen years to a nearly month-long event that draws thousands of attendees from across the Finger Lakes region. Each year, the Festival continues its mission of inspiring people with world-class chamber music and engaging diverse audiences in its outreach programs. All concerts are wheelchair accessible. • Seagle Festival returns for 109th Concert Season

Schroon Lake’s Seagle Festival has announced its performance lineup for its 109th annual season. Beginning June 16th, the concert season features a host of opera and theater performances. With performances ranging from classic Italian opera to Broadway classics to a special Juneteenth concert, there is a performance for everyone.

Oscar Seagle Memorial Festival, home of the Seagle Festival performances
    The Oscar Seagle Memorial Theater

Seagle Festival has been the Adirondacks’ premiere organization for opera and musical theater for over a century. Singer/teacher Oscar Seagle founded the festival in 1915 as a family run operation. In 1920, Seagle purchased the property that now houses the festival, with it quickly becoming a hub for enterprising young musicians. Throughout the past century, it evolved into a non-profit run by leading vocal trainers and theater performers. Today, the organization focuses on cultivating the talent of aspiring performers, and producing high quality theater performances.

The Summer season begins June 16th at 2:00pm with a special Juneteenth Concert. This performance includes a curated collection of works by eight African American composers, sung by emerging vocalists. Old Friends & New follows this performance, officially kicking off the season. This performance will introduce all 31 emerging performers in both solo and ensemble pieces. Additionally, there will be a post-concert reception where audience members can meet and greet performers.

Mainstage performances will begin on July 3rd, with a performance of the Broadway hit Brigadoon. This hit show features classic songs like “The Heather on the Hill,” “Waitin’ for my Dearie,” and “Almost Like Being in Love.” There will be performances on July 3rd, 5th, and 6th at 7:30pm, with a special matinee July 5th at 2:00pm.

The Seagle Festival’s 2023 production of Romeo and Juliet

July 17th, 18th, and 20th will feature a performance of the classic Mozart opera Don Giovanni. The opera that follows the Casanova-like Don Giovanni in a story that mixes comedy, drama, and beautiful vocals. The performance will be in its original Italian, with English supertitles. On top of the three evening performances, there will also be a matinee performance July 19th at 2:00pm.

The third mainstage performance is Dragon’s Breath based on the novel by Charles Frazier. The play’s story tells the tale of a Confederate deserter returning home, in a narrative that mirrors Homer’s Odyssey. This performance is part of the organization’s goal to promote contemporary American opera, and marks the first female-composed opera produced by the festival.

The final mainstage production of the season is the Sondheim classic Sweeney Todd. With a story that has captivated audiences since 1979, this musical provides a great forum for the festival’s performers to demonstrate their talent. With complex characters, and challenging vocal performances, Sweeney Todd is sure to be an eventful send-off for the mainstage season.

The Seagle Festival’s 2023 children’s opera The Ugly Duckling

In addition to mainstage performances, there will be two additional children-focused events during the season. On July 6th, the festival will present a children’s opera titled Dragon’s Breath. This opera focuses on a boy named Alan who learns to deal with his anger, personified as a dragon. Following this performance, the Seagle Festival will tour the show throughout the North Country’s elementary schools. The Musical World of Disney will close out the concert season with a September 7th performance. The show will celebrate Disney’s centennial with a revue of classics dating back to the 1920s.

  • Old Songs Festival is Back For 44th Year

The three-day Old Songs Festival of Traditional Music and Dance on the Altamont Fairgrounds outside of Albany will be held at the end of the month on June 28-30.

The 44th festival celebrates traditional music from around the world. This includes North American music from Appalachia, New England and Quebec as well as music from Ireland, West Africa and South Africa. In other words, “music with roots”.

The Main Stage performances are on June 28 and 29 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. and on June 30 3:30 to 7 p.m. There will be arts and crafts vendors, workshops, call and responses, traditional dance classes and open mics as well as concerts from various artists.

Old Songs uses the barns, a dance building and historical buildings on the property for the events and has a smaller family stage used for children’s performances. Local kids will also have a chance to participate in the festival with the “Great Groove Band.” Any child who plays an instrument can play with the band with the help of musical coaches.

Great Groove Band’s goal is to inspire the next generation of musicians. They invite any child aged 5 to 18 to perform in a professional setting. Donna Hébert created the band in the late 90’s at Old Songs Festival and in 2018, her daughter Molly Hebert-Wilson, became the director. On June 30, the band has a performance on the main stage at 2:30.

Other performances include those of Sharon Katz & The Peace Train, Robin & Linda Williams, The Ebony Hillbillies and more.
