  • Andrew Bird Scintillates in Schenectady Debut

On a picture-perfect summer evening in Schenectady, the vibrant atmosphere of Frog Alley Brewing was electrified by a magnificent performance from Andrew Bird. An artist whose unique blend of folk, indie rock, and classical music has earned him a devoted following over the years, this stop marked his first time playing in the Electric City. Packing the place from the ground on up to the balcony, it was a testament to Bird’s enduring artistry and widespread appeal. Playing a diverse setlist that spanned his rich discography and showcased his eclectic musical talents, his dynamic and colorful debut was nothing short of delightful.

Opening for Andrew Bird was the legendary Malian duo Amadou & Mariam. The Grammy nominated couple, both of whom are legally blind, have been making music together since the 1970s, blending traditional Malian sounds with rock, blues, and pop influences. Their music is joyful and rhythmic, often addressing social and political themes with a fun touch. Amadou & Mariam’s performance was a perfect complement to Bird’s, offering a lively, soulful, and fun introduction to the evening. Despite obvious cultural barriers, the Frog Alley crowd was fully engaged from the start, and by the end of the hour long set, the entire audience was up on their feet and dancing like they were having the time of their lives, further proof that music truly is a universal language.  After a brief intermission, it was finally time to take flight with Andrew Bird.

Amadou & Mariam, known as “the blind couple from Mali,” opened for Andrew Bird at Frog Alley Brewing on 8/13/24.

Andrew Bird’s musical journey has been nothing short of fascinating. A classically trained violinist, Bird has released 16 studio albums, with his music evolving from swing jazz and traditional folk to more intricate and experimental sounds. What sets Bird apart is not just his prolific output but also his innovative approach to music-making. His violin often serves as a multifaceted instrument—strummed like a guitar, plucked like a mandolin, and bowed in traditional and unorthodox ways. Bird’s performances are also characterized by his whistling, which is as nuanced and expressive as any instrument. Fans are also quick to notice his specially-designed spinning speaker known as the Janus Horn that sits center stage during every show. Featuring a two-mouthed horn that spins at various speeds during operation, it gives music played through it a whirling Doppler effect that is truly original and unquestionably psychedelic.

Opening the show with a pair of songs from his brand new album Sunday Morning Put-On, the easy lounge swing of “Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise” set the mood, while Bird’s buttery smooth voice had the crowd hanging on every delicate word in “I Fall in Love Too Easily.”  Performing one of his oldest Bowl of Fire-era numbers next, Bird’s spoken word delivery and theatrical gestures during “Why?” simultaneously had the crowd amused and impressed, just as it has since being released in 2001.

It’s not a spell or a curse you put on me
Or the way you make me smile so tenderly
But how I wish it was your temper you were throwing
Damn you for being so easygoing

    Lyrics from “Why?”

A longtime fan of Andrew Bird’s music, I’ve seen him perform many times over the years.  A unique thing about him though, is every single time has been with a different cast of supporting players.  Opting to play this summer tour as a trio, Bird aligned himself with a pair of ultra-talented and distinguished musicians in New York-born drummer Ted Pool, and playing both standup bass, electric bass and acoustic guitars, was Alan Hampton. Each member bringing their unique flair, creating a dynamic interplay that amplified Bird’s intricate compositions, the chemistry between them was magnetic and hearing all three voices sing harmonies together was simply beautiful.

Bird’s lyrics have always been one of the most compelling aspects of his music. They are poetic, often cryptic, and rich with metaphor, exploring themes of existential dread, love, and the complexities of modern life. “Bloodless,” a personal favorite from 2019’s My Finest Work Yet always stands out for its layered momentum, deep groove and even deeper lyrical content that critiques the current political climate with a subtlety that leaves space for the listener to interpret the meaning. This song becomes more and more relevant every time I hear it.

“I’m keeping mine with the altruists
I’m putting my weight behind the dancer
I know it’s hard to be an optimist
When you trust least the ones who claim to have the answers

It’s an uncivil war, bloodless for now”

    -Lyrics from “Bloodless”

Another new song, “You’d be So Nice to Come Home To” felt perfect, as if were written for this exact kind of night, with Bird crooning out “Under an August moon burning above, you’d be so nice, you’d be paradise to come home to and love.”  Following his hit single “Sisyphus,” we would enter the Inside Problems portion of the show. Written and recorded during the pandemic, “Atomized,” and “Underlands” further transported the Electric City to a surreal state, before Bird would pause to banter with the crowd for a bit.  Switching over from violin to his vintage Gibson electric guitar, he would claim the next song was written for a friend that happens to have a birthday tomorrow. Then launching into one of loudest and most rocking songs of the evening, the vibe during “The Night Before Your Birthday” felt more like a celebration than a concert.

“You’d be So Nice to Come Home To” had all the feels on 8/13/24.

Bird’s use of language is masterful; his lyrics often juxtapose archaic phrases with contemporary issues, creating a timeless quality. This linguistic dexterity is part of what draws a diverse crowd to his shows—fans who appreciate music that challenges as much as it entertains. Setlist staple, “A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left” was a perfect example of this, while the lush and layered textures of “3 White Horses” delves into themes of mortality, using vivid imagery to create an atmosphere of eerie calm. “Give It Away” and “Orpheo Looks Back,” a pair of songs from 2012’s Break It Yourself, would feature Alan Hampton switching from bass to acoustic guitar and sharing vocal duties on the main microphone with Bird. The two of them clearly having a blast together, singing with smiles and passion.  Bird would then tell the crowd he’s been working on some old classical jazz tunes with these fellas, and they’d like to try one for us called “Caravan,” by the legendary Duke Ellington. Finally, bringing the main portion of the show to a close was another personal favorite, “Tables and Chairs.” Offering a glimpse into a post-apocalyptic world, the song still manages to find hope in the idea of human connection, and if you’re asking, yes, there will be snacks!

Returning to the stage to a prolonged standing ovation, Andrew Bird would humbly thank the crowd at Frog Alley Brewing. Saying it was his first time playing in Schenectady and he didn’t really know what to expect, he seemed genuinely appreciative that people showed up and packed out the place. Rewarding them with perhaps his biggest song to date, Bird would paint a picture of “Pulaski at Night,” before the punchy, bittersweet Are You Serious anthem “Capsized” would send them home feeling inspired, fulfilled and maybe a little froggy, too.

Andrew Bird’s concert at Schenectady’s Frog Alley Brewing Summer Stage was a showcase of his exceptional talents as a musician and lyricist. A journey through his extensive catalog, the setlist was carefully curated, blending newer tracks with fan favorites. Supported by a stellar band and with an unforgettable opening act in Amadou & Mariam, the evening was a celebration of diverse musical traditions and innovative artistry. Bird’s ability to captivate an audience with his intricate melodies and thought-provoking lyrics is a rare gift, making this concert a highlight of the summer music season and further cements Bird’s growing reputation as one of the most important songwriters of our time.

  • Primus, Coheed and Cambria & Puddles Pity Party shut down Terminal B in Standout Show

Buffalo Outer Harbor, Terminal B hosted legendary Primus, Coheed and Cambria with special guest Puddles Pity Party on August 9, 2024.

Puddles Pity Party at Terminal B

Puddles Pity Party, the melancholy clown songster from America’s Got Talent, lured the crowd in with their deep golden voice and creative renditions of classics ranging from “My Heart Will Go On” to “Stairway to Heaven” with borrowed words from other famous songs like the Gilligan Island’s theme Song. Puddles’ interactions with the crowd were as much a part of the show as the music itself and the crowd enjoyed piecing together lyrics as Puddles sang several familiar tunes. As a result his memorable performance rocked the Terminal B crowd and set the stage for Coheed and Cambria.

Coheed and Cambria began the show with their hit song “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3” which brought a different kind of intensity to the evening than Puddles Pity Party could offer. The band’s ability to create an emotional connection with their audience was next level, and fans passionately joined in on tracks like “A Favor House Atlantic” and “The Crowing” their voices rising in unison with the music creating a cathartic concert going experience. They closed with “Welcome Home” which seemed appropriate as they mentioned during the set that Buffalo has felt like home for the band throughout their years of touring and being hosted at people’s Buffalo homes throughout the years.

Les Claypool interacted with the audience to perform their hit and rare song at the encore, and they played “Jellikit” as the fans requested. Primus said goodbye with “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”, leaving the audience in awe, although Primus didn’t promise to come back to Buffalo as portion of the audience repeatedly chanted “Primus Sucks.”

  • Jazz in the City Visits Historic South Side Syracuse

The August Jazz in the City concerts returns to the historic south side of Syracuse for a celebration that has become a long tradition. The Blacklites, a local powerhouse soul band formed over 50 years ago, will appear for the 20th time at Jazz in the City, at the same Dunk & Bright furniture location on South Salina Street.

Mayor Ben Walsh will be on hand along with other dignitaries to award the band with a proclamation recognizing their half century-plus as an urban cultural resource. Walsh said, “The Blacklites have been a staple in the Syracuse music scene for over 40 years. I’m thrilled that they continue to bring high-energy performances for listeners of all ages to Jazz in the City and look forward to recognizing them this year with a proclamation at what will be another can’t-miss event.”

1Accord Line Dance, a growing “dance for health” group founded by Kristle Lemmones in 2010, will open the show. All will be invited to dance with them until the Blacklites appear on the Leadsafe CNY stage at 7 p.m. on August 8th, to perform a two-hour concert.

The Jazz in the City “concert fair” events take place throughout the summer in neighborhoods across the city. As a mobile public health effort unique to American cities, they present America’s music surrounded by multiple healthcare and family service providers, plus food and craft vendors.

Title sponsor Syracuse Community Health provides a team of healthcare professionals as the centerpiece of a healthcare village. As an incentive to be screened and interviewed for individual and family health needs, those going through the SCH tent will receive $5 New York State Lottery scratch-off tickets. Additionally, everyone attending always receives free “goodie bags” filled with information provided by the attending healthcare village providers.

An audience of over 1,000 is expected at the concert, which has always been one of the biggest draws of the series. It’s become one of the biggest family-friendly social events of the summer, thanks to the generosity of the Bright family, and of course our many other sponsors, led by SCH and Community Bank.”

Don’t miss Jazz in the City tonight in Syracuse with The Blacklites.

  • Foo Fighters make it all right at Citi Field

After a weather reduced show at Citi Field on Wednesday night, Foo Fighters make good and celebrate all on Friday, July 19.

The crowd ushered into the stadium and by the time the Foo Fighters took the stage for the 8pm start everyone was ready to rock.  The New York weather had been a steamy heat bath but on this night the weather couldn’t have been more perfect for an outside stadium show.

When Foo Fighters took the stage, they wasted no time addressing the Wednesday show prior.  Heavy storms caused that show to be cancelled about halfway through that night.  Dave Grohl let the crowd know that this show was for both nights to enjoy. So, he was going to sing and yell extra loud for all to hear.

The Foo Fighters certainly made up for it.  They crushed through a set of monster hits and left it all out there on the stage, dropping a three-hour marathon set on this Friday night.

Looking around you can’t help but notice that the Foo Fighters are a band that attracts people of all ages.  So many adults were in tow with head-phoned children who were equally as ready to head bang and dance through the aisles.  Dave recognized this as well and from the stage he spoke to the OG fans and played some songs for them, and then he addressed the fans who might be here for their first show and welcomed them as well to the rock and roll experience that is the Foo Fighters.

Foo Fighters have been making music for 30 years.  Dave Grohl is one of the more authentic rock and roll ambassadors that exists currently. On this night he lived up to all of it.  His voice, his guitar playing. It’s all 100%, all the time from Grohl, a soaking wet mess by the end of the show and by each drop of sweat that dripped off him, you knew he has given the best, the best, the best…

  • Dazed Cannabis Packed as Havoc and Cormega Preview Tracks From Forthcoming Album

The essence of Queensbridge was alive and well inside Dazed Cannabis, as Havoc and Cormega played songs from their forthcoming album. Vibe Magazine editor-at-large Datwon Thomas hosted the Havoc x Cormega Album Listening Event, where the two hip hop legends welcomed fans to a behind the scenes look into their creative journey, inspirations, and the collaborative process behind their unreleased, untitled album.

As a result, the dispensary/event space was full to the brim by the time Havoc and Cormega graced the stage. As the duo entered the venue to lukewarm applause –Havoc in his now trademark shades, and Cormega with his assertive presence– they carried with them a steely determination and –Havoc in particular– a business like approach to this public appearance.

In turn, Thomas warmed up the crowd, as he commenced the listening and Q&A portion of the event. Setting the tone with a couple of the duo’s classic collaborations in “Angel Dust,” (where Cormega revealed that Havoc’s standout chorus was due to his own unfamiliarity with song structures) and the Marley Marl produced “On The Real,” which served as a rite of passage between Queensbridge legends. “Getting on a Marley record was everything to us,” said Havoc.

Havoc X Cormega Listening Event: Music Review

Cormega starred, playing the part of hood poet, enforcer and gentleman throughout the evening. And after quick intermission for ‘Mega to enforce the event’s strict no cell phone policy, Thomas transitioned into songs from the new album. Although unfinished, the duo previewed 10 quality tracks, gauging fan response and opinions along the way. Particularly due to Havoc’s meticulous approach, as Cormega enlisted the help of the crowd as he petitioned for his favorite beats to make the album’s final cut.

Nonetheless, Havoc, stoic as ever, kept answers short and sweet as Cormega fielded most of the questions. However, it seems as though Hav’ does most of his talking behind the boards. Hence why Dazed Cannabis experienced its first bobble head night this past Saturday, as heads bopped to one hard-hitting beat after the other. Havoc’s trademark gritty, bass-line heavy style and classical samples were in full-effect as he flawlessly captured the grimy, rugged, street tone with which Cormega does his best work.

Yet the legendary producer was the least surprised at his excellence behind the boards. After all, earlier this year, Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones Part II” was named the greatest hip hop beat of all-time. When Thomas broached the topic, Havoc nonchalantly responded with, “it took ya’ll this long to realize that?”

After a few more records, and another brief intermission for Cormega to hilariously reiterate the no recording policy to an overzealous fan, he previewed the album’s only guest appearance, featuring a verse from Raekwon.

    Album Release Date?

All in all, despite the intimate preview, neither a release date nor month was revealed. Even though a joint-project between the Queensbridge natives is years in the making, there doesn’t seem to be any rush. On Saturday night at least, Havoc and Cormega seemed content to let the creative process play itself out. And The Havoc X Cormega Listening Event was like a comic testing out jokes before a new special.

As Cormega delved into the journey behind the album, he revealed that there’s more at play than meets the eye. “I understand the healing process. Sometimes people forget we’re humans. This man just lost his brother and someone he considered a brother-in-rhyme. I understood it was going to take time for him [Havoc] to heal,” explained Cormega as he referred to Havoc’s loss of his brother Killa Black, and Mobb Deep partner Prodigy.

  • Dancing in the Beach: JRAD at The Stone Pony 5/17/24

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (JRAD) paid homage to their Jersey roots with an unbelievable spectacle of a show at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park. The show included Stuart Bogie sitting in on many songs, notably during “Eyes of the World.”

The first set started off with a classic Bluesy Dead song “Good Morning School Girl”. The set included an extensive “Fire on the Mountain” and a beautiful “Eyes of the World”. The band ended the set with one of my absolute favorite renditions of “Dancing In the Strets”.

It was so good JRAD started the second set at Stone Pony with the same jam. The “Music Never Stopped” that followed was equally as groovy and kept the vibe going.

What followed was a beautiful medley of Deadhead favorites including “Help on the Way”, “St Stephen”, “The Wheel”, and even “Uncle John’s Band” done in pristine JRAD fashion.

Most of the band is from New Jersey, the show is in the Jersey shore, so proper homage was paid with a double Bruce Springsteen encore. This band was truly born to run!

    JRAD – Stone Pony – May 17, 2024

Set 1: Good Morning School Girl, Touch of Grey, Silvio, Fire on The Mountain, Eyes of the World, Dancing in the Street

Set 2: Dancing in the Street, The Music Never Stopped, Help on the Way, Slipknot!, St.Stephen

Althea, The Wheel, He’s Gone, Uncle John’s Band

    Encore: Rosalita, Born to Run

  • ‘Louis in London’ Live Album to Release July 12

Verve Records has announced the release of Louis in London, Louis Armstrong’s last great live performance on July 12. The album will be released on digital, CD, and exclusive black-and-blue vinyl.

Louis in London releases July 12, 2024

Anyone who has listened to jazz is sure to recognize the music of Louis Armstrong. Throughout his five decade career, he revolutionized jazz trumpet and singing, achieving critical and commercial success never seen before. While born in New Orleans, Armstrong settled in Queens, NY, where he worked for much of his life. His work altered jazz, placing emphasis on improvised solos, crafting the jazz we know today. Off of the success of hits like “Hello Dolly” and “What a Wonderful World,” Armstrong and his All-star Band played across the world.

In 1968, they traveled to London to play the BBC Show of the Week. The performance was one “full of vitality and joy,” with some of Armstrong’s most inspired singing and trumpeting. Armstrong realized the impact of this recording, choosing to share it with his close friends more than any of his other works. Additionally, Armstrong hoped that the world could enjoy the recording, affixing a note that read “for the fans” on the tape box after receiving it. Now over five decades later, the recording is being released to the public, just as Armstrong hoped.

“Armstrong once claimed he was here ‘in the cause of happiness.’ All these decades later, albums like LOUIS IN LONDON continue his life’s mission at a time when we still need to be reminded that maybe it still is a wonderful world and maybe we’ll never walk alone after all.”

    -Ricky Riccardi

The Album features eleven of the greatest songs recorded by Armstrong and The All Stars. Additionally, the release will feature extensive liner notes from Ricky Riccardi, an Armstrong biographer and director of research collections at the Louis Armstrong House Museum

  • Totten Bridge Releases Powerful New Single, “Seasons Change”

Rising Pop-Rock artist Totten Bridge pulls on fans’ heartstrings with his latest single, “Seasons Change.” Motivated by the loss of his mother, the New York artist drew inspiration from Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird.”

Times of difficulty have been a catalyst of inspiration for Totten Bridge, whose career began during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Defying categorization, the NYC-based artist draws inspiration from Alt-Pop, infused with folk, EDM, and American Heartland influences. Totten Bridge has received critical acclaim from numerous publications, including Clash, Notion, and Earmilk. Totten Bridge’s poetic lyrics explore universal themes of life, love, and in the case of “Seasons Change,” loss.

In the face of grief, “Seasons Change” offers a refreshingly optimistic perspective. Totten Bridge revealed his desire for the song to be a call to action, saying, “I wanted ‘Seasons Change’ to feel powerful and cause someone to… [embrace] change and [overcome] their fears.” “Seasons Change” shifts focus to the future, encouraging listeners to focus on what is to come and overcoming life’s challenges. The infectious beat and anthemic chorus promises listeners “long winding roads will lead the way”.

The influence of Fleetwood Mac is apparent in the personal lyrics and strong message. Speaking to universal experiences of love and loss, Totten Bridge successfully resonates with listeners’ emotions. The driving beat and gripping chorus draw listeners in and demand full attention. Change is one of the few certainties in life, and “Seasons Change” empathizes with fear while encouraging optimism.
