  • Grace Potter Brings the Mother Road to the Capitol Theatre

Grace Potter performed at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on January 18, in support of her 2023 release, Mother Road.  This performance marked the third stop on a tour extending through August.  Backed by a dynamic four-piece band, Potter delivered a two-hour rock exhibition, captivating and thrilling her fans at The Cap.

As the house lights dimmed, a stage metamorphosis evoked the sensation of traveling down Route 66 in the 1960s.  Enveloped in the simulated radiance of tour bus headlights, a silhouette materialized, and Potter took center stage, kicking off the show with “Lady Vagabound” from Mother Road.

The night was a musical inferno, igniting the stage from the instant Grace made her entrance. Throughout the night, Potter embodied a kaleidoscope of personas. In the early moments, she became a tornado, swirling dynamically around the stage.  The song “Your Girl” from Midnight saw Potter confidently striding across the stage, and when “Good Time” hit, it nearly lifted the roof off the house with its electrifying energy.

The evening resonated with an array of new songs. Nearly half of the Mother Road recording found its place in the setlist.  “Ready Set Go,” from Mother Road, showcased Grace’s raw and textured voice, infusing the song with the necessary vigor.  Long time GP & The Nocturnal fans were not left by the wayside. Tunes like “Medicine” and “Ah Mary” made their way to the night’s set list.

In the latter part of the evening, Potter graced the stage alone, accompanied only by her guitar.  During this intimate moment, she presented a heartfelt interpretation of Etta James‘ “I’d Rather Go Blind.”  Her minimal guitar accompaniment, combined with a deep haunting vocal, emerged as the focal point of the night.  While this change in vibe deviated from the earlier energy, it introduced another layer to Grace’s seasoned rock ‘n’ roll expertise.

This was also an evening of musical milestones. Brittney Spencer, the opening act, was releasing her debut album, My Stupid Life, at the stroke of midnight.  Moreover, this was her first time opening for Grace Potter marking another significant first in her burgeoning career.

Recognized recently by Rolling Stone as one of the “25 Artists to Watch,” Spencer demonstrated why she earned such acclaim.  Commanding the stage with a powerful presence and a voice of sultry richness, she allowed her self-penned tunes to resonate not only within the theater but also in the hearts of those who listened.

Spencer collaborated with Potter for two duets during the show. She joined Grace in an acoustic rendition of “Little Hitchhiker” from Mother Road, and later during the encore, they united their voices for a cover of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.”  In each instance, their voices harmonized seamlessly, crafting a singular and exquisite sound.

Potter wrapped up the evening with a four-song encore, starting with a rocking version of “Paris (Ohh La La).”  To bring the night to a close and with the audience illuminating the space with their phone lights, Grace concluded with “Stars.”  The harmonious glow enveloping the hall against the backdrop of darkness orchestrated a melodic moment that transported everyone into a symphonic realm beyond.

The tour takes Potter and crew to The Paramount in Huntington on January 24th, The Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, NJ on January 25th, and The Filmore in Philadelphia on January 26th, with Brittney Spencer opening all three shows.

  • Bad Mary Premieres A New Live Music Video For “The Floor is Lava”

The New York-based Bad Mary are known for playing loud, fast, aggressive, and fun live shows. Drawing influences from the likes of The Ramones and Blondie, the band is known for constantly refining their sound and making waves in the rock music scene while having fun. The band recently performed at New York’s Bowery Electric where they performed “The Floor is Lava” and released a live music video of the performance.

Made up of their lead vocalist Amanda Mac, her husband Mike on bass, her dad Bill on drums, and her professor David on guitar, the NY-based rock band has seen a steady growth in both their local and fan bases. The band has continued to perform at prominent venues like The Knitting Factory and recently at the Bowery Electric.

  • Boojum Go Through the Looking Glass for Debut Performance

The New York City psychedelic rock scene gained a formidable new entrant when Brooklyn-born Boojum took the stage for their first-ever show on Saturday, January 20.

Performing at the combination music venue/recording studio at Brooklyn’s Firstlive, the four-piece band of Chris Mackin (guitar/vocals), Josh Santiago (guitar/vocals), Sarah Elaz (bass/vocals), and Dan Shein (drums) debuted twelve original songs, with lyrics by poet and translator Tom Mackin.

Boojum was born out of a unique one-night-only event at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl that saw Elaz join the Beatles jam band Walrus (Mackin, Santiago and Shein) for a performance inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Refining that original music and doing away with the theatrical trappings of the “Walrus in Wonderland” show, Boojum’s debut was musically focused, showcasing a creative abundance across an inspired two-sets that kept attendees rapt with refreshing original jams.

While the strength of Tom Mackin’s songwriting was apparent when the audience insisted on an unprompted call-and-response during “Vanish Away,” the highlight of the evening was the original “The Mouse.” This bass-driven funky groove led the audience into a fist-pumping “Oysters” to close the first set. When the band retook the stage attendees were treated to another series of originals, peaking with the grooving “Looking Glass House.”

The full technical capabilities of Firstlive were also on display Saturday night, with Boojum not only leaning into the jam-scene trend of offering a multi-camera live stream of the show but also using the performance to begin recording an inaugural live album.

In recording their debut EP live, Boojum heightened the atmosphere with added excitement for attendees. The decision to eschew the controlled environment of a studio for the spontaneity and vibrancy of a live performance demonstrated confidence in craft and a belief in the power of the band’s live presentation.

Boojum’s debut performance is sure to leave a lasting impression when the inaugural show turns into a full album this spring. Their next performance is at The Sultan Room on March 16. The show will feature dancers, visuals, and guests with the band performing wonderland inspired songs from their forthcoming EP and more. Tickets are on sale now.

    Boojum – Firstlive, Brooklyn – January 20, 2024

Set 1: Cheshire Cat, Vanish Away, Pig Baby , Vorpal Blade, The Mouse > Oysters

Set 2: Mr W. Rabbit > Snark 1, Looking Glass House > Sundial, Caterpillar Hookah

  • Tucker Woods Explores The Importance of Going With The Flow in “Are You Glass?”

New York-based duo Tucker Woods has released a new single “Are You Glass?” from their upcoming album Sunshine Blues, set to be released on March 15.

Tucker Woods is a band that delivers an authentic and dynamic sound with an energetic and youthful spirit. • Ricky Byrd Honors Jeff Beck In “Rhapsody In Blues (One for Jeff)”

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Byrd pays tribute to his guitar hero Jeff Beck in a new single “Rhapsody In Blues (One for Jeff)”

Guitarist and Singer-songwriter Ricky Byrd who was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in inducted in 2015 with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts has released a new single instrumental single “Rhapsody In Blues (One for Jeff)” to pay a tribute to his guitar hero Jeff Beck who passed away in 2023 due to illness.

Byrd’s new single “Rhapsody In Blues (One for Jeff)” follows the release of his recent digital/7″ singles “Louanne”, “Alien” and “Glamdemic Blues”, which featured a B-side cover of the Four Tops’ classic “Reach Out (I’ll Be There).

The only way I felt I could properly pay tribute to Jeff Beck, whose playing has inspired me my whole life, was to record this track dedicated to him. This is a track I felt I needed to write. I did it as a thank you to Jeff. He was such an important part of the process for me as a guitar player.

First as a teenager discovering all this cool new music I was soaking up, trying to learn a riff here and there (the easy ones), to all these many years later where I’m still in awe of where he took guitar playing. And yes I’m still trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to nick one of his riffs. Thanks again Guv’nor.

    Ricky Byrd

The song honors the legendary guitarist Jeff Beck, who played with the Yardbirds and was once named one of the top 5 guitarists of all-time by Rolling Stone. Jeff was a  two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee – first with The Yardbirds in 1992 and later as a solo artist in 2009, before he passed he had with Johnny Depp in the Fall off 2022 and made a stop at UPAC in Kingston. Revisit the performance here.

“Rhapsody In Blues (One for Jeff)” is available to stream everywhere. For more information about Byrd, visit here.

Recreating the sound, energy, and experience of The Grateful Dead, the renowned Dark Star Orchestra marks two decades and over 3,000 shows of musical excellence. Committing to authenticity and to the unique live experience, they have become a staple in the world of live performances. With seven talented musicians, the band brings the Dead’s music to life, using historical setlists and crafting their own unique sets locally and internationally.

Previous guest performances with Dark Star Orchestra include those of six original Grateful Dead members, including Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, and Bill Kreutzmann, and collaborations with artists like Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman of Phish, showcasing the band’s credibility and deep connection to the music community. “For us, it’s a chance to recreate some of the magic that was created for us over the years,” keyboardist and vocalist Rob Barraco explains. “We offer a sort of a historical perspective at what it might have been like to go to a show in 1985, 1978 or whenever. Even for Deadheads who can say they’ve been to a hundred shows in the 90s, we offer something they never got to see live.”

For nearly a century, The Stanley Theatre has brought the community together with live concerts, Broadway shows, musicals, ballets, movies, graduations, and recitals. Today, The Stanley Theatre operates as a not-for-profit organization run by the Central New York Community Arts Council, Inc. Originally built as a movie palace, The Stanley Theatre opened its doors in 1928 with 2,963 seats, a grand entry staircase that resembles the main staircase of the Titanic, a gold leaf interior and a terra cotta and tiled mosaic exterior.

Tickets for Dark Star Orchestra at the Stanley Theatre in Utica start at $33.50 including fees and go on sale Friday, January 19 at 10:00 a.m. Tickets are available either in person at the box office or by phone at 315-724-4000. Tickets will also be available online here.
