The Ashokan Center in Olivebridge, NY will hold The Spirit of Aloha ukulele concert on Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 pm, to kick off their 11th annual Uke Revue.
This special concert will feature 6 remarkable ukulele players from all across the country coming together to honor the tradition of playing the instrument. Additionally, the concert previews the weekend-long celebration where musicians come together with enthusiastic learners to teach and play ukulele together.
Musician, Ben Hassenger, known as the “Ukulele Ambassador of Michigan,” will host the festival. Hassenger is a strong advocate for ukulele playing and education. Currently, he uses his passion to spread the teachings of the ukulele in the form of Uke Fest, which he’s been the coordinator of since 2020.
I like to call the ukulele the ‘most folk of folk instruments’ because it brings folks together. Rarely do you see one uke player sitting by themselves; more often it’s a group of two, three, or dozens playing together and singing. It’s a communal music experience and that’s one of the many things that makes it so very special.”
Ben Hassenger
Along with Ben Hassenger, the Uke Revue will include performances from Lil Rev, Kelly Jolly, Victoria “Viggy” Kolasinski, Dani Joy, and Perry Stauffer. All six musicians will be participating in the weekend’s activities as educators.
This lineup consists of ukulele social media influencers, festival organizers, creators of ukulele academies, and sponsored musicians.
Ticket prices are on a sliding scale, ranging from $10 to $30 for all ages.
More information and tickets for Uke Revue 2024 and Uke Fest can be found here. For more events at The Ashokan Center, fans can visit ashokancenter.org
The annual Memorial Meltdown music festival will take place May 25-26 in Lake George. The weekend-spanning festival will feature touring acts from across the country to ring in the summer concert season. With the festival featuring four sets each day, concert-goers will have a variety of genres and artists to enjoy.
Memorial Meltdown is held by the same organizers as the Adirondack Independence Music Festival, which will be held in late August in Lake George. In addition to performances, the festival will feature DJ sets and a variety of food and craft vendors. With the concert’s location at the Charles R. Wood Festival Commons, concert-goers will have access to Lake George’s restaurants, shopping, campgrounds and other amenities.
This yearâs festival will be headlined by The Revivalists on Saturday and Dispatch on Sunday. Americana groups Ryan Montbleau Band, The Mallett Brothers Band, and Rob Beaulieu Band will join the Revivalists on stage on Saturday. On Sunday, Dispatch will be supported by the reggae and funk rock influenced stylings of Mihali, The Samples, and Annie in the Water.
The Revivalists are a world-renowned rock ‘n’ roll octet, who have racked up critical and commercial success with their alt-rock anthems. They rose to fame with their signature blending of American music styles, ranging from funk and jazz to roots rock. With smash hits, like the double-platinum “Wish I Knew You,” they have garnered over 800 million streams. Known for their live shows, the Revivalists have previously headlined everywhere from Lollapalooza to the New Orleans Jazz Fest. The Revivalists champion many philanthropic causes with portions of their ticket sales donated to Rev Causes. Rev Causes supports a host of charitable organizations, ranging from gun safety to arts endowments.
Vermont-based roots rock band Dispatch are legends of the live music circuit. For over 25 years, the band has garnered success in both studio and live environments. Throughout their career, they have released eight acclaimed studio albums, starting with 1996’s Silent Steeples. Throughout their career, Dispatch has not been afraid to completely overhaul their sound between albums. Their latest album Break Our Fall illustrates the band’s eclectic mixing of genre. Reggae, folk, and blues supplement the band’s signature roots rock, working as a vehicle for their most pointed political lyrics to date. They speak to finding hope for the future in a time of such political and social chaos.
Dispatch is also a mainstay of the live circuit, having performed at countless festivals and concerts. They made history selling out Madison Square Garden three nights in a row, and drawing crowds of over 100,000 to a live concert in Boston in 2004. What makes this all the more impressive is the band’s relative freedom within the music industry, drawing these audiences with no major label support.
On top of this, Dispatch has remained dedicated to philanthropy, using their fame to aid a number of charitable causes. The band has formed charitable organizations to fight issues like poverty and mass incarceration. They have even traveled as far as Nicaragua and Zimbabwe to help those in need. This show comes before the band’s fall AMPlifying Democracy Tour, meant to promote civic engagement before the presidential elections. The tour will promote Dispatch’s AMPlifying Democracy Campaign to inspire voting in national and local elections regardless of political affiliation.
Gates for Memorial Meltdown open both days at 2:30 PM, with performances lasting from 3:30 past 9:00 PM. Tickets are on sale now, with a variety of single and multi-day passes. VIP passes include a meal, snacks, discounted beverages and access to a private viewing area. Children 12 and under get free admission. For more information on ticketing, visit the link here.
Just three days after the release of her debut record When It All Goes Down, Sarah King received the news that she has thyroid cancer. After being told she’d need multiple surgeries beginning in July, she decided to schedule the first following the Grand Point North Festival so she could give her fans a proper “temporary farewell,” with her only full band show of the year.
Her first LP, When It All Goes Down, was released on March 29, 2024, to praise from everyone from American Songwriter to Brooklyn Vegan, The Bluegrass Situation, Glide Magazine, and many more.
Before her hiatus from performing Sarah King, who is based in Vermont, will appear at a handful of festivals, including the Wildflower Festival in Richardson, TX, on May 18 – 19. These will be her first performances since receiving the news.
“While I’m heartbroken not to have the year I’d hoped with this album, the songs will still be there for me when my voice and my body are healthy enough to take to the stage again,” says King, pointing out that while any cancer diagnosis is extremely frightening, having surgery so close to her vocal nerves causes additional anxiety.
King creates thought-provoking, versatile Americana music – touching on real-life emotions and situations, while drawing on classic folk-blues themes, balancing songs about the devil and booze with hard-won moments of reflection and acceptance.
The title track of When It All Goes Down was inspired by doctors not listening to women, seeming like she wrote the song to her future self, somehow knowing that she’d need to “stand up to the devil.”
The album is a testament to King’s strength, reflecting on when she lost her mother, first husband, and dog. Songs like the slow-burning “Stronger Than You’ll Ever Know” find her deftly navigating the hidden spaces between darkness and the light.
“My stories are folk stories,” says Sarah King. “Of the people, for the people, by the people (I’m a person). These are songs for folks who’ve lived through some sh*t and want some music that doesn’t shy away from that.”

In light of his special performance tickets have already gone on sale on the Carnegie Hall official website. Ticket prices range from $69, $89, $99 and $149.
Judy Collins’ legendary career has seen her remain active for over seven decades
Moreover, Nash offered a preview to the midtown-Manhattan venue’s crowd making an unannounced appearance at Crosby, Stills, and Nash tribute concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall on Monday, May 13. Although Nash wasn’t officially on the bill, he came out at the end of the night to perform a moving rendition of “Our House.”
For his part, Nash is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who has seen rock history unfold at some of its seminal moments. After all the Blackpool-bred musician began making history during the launch of the British Invasion with his work with CSN, while perfecting his craft during the birth of the Laurel Canyon movement a year later. An extraordinary Grammy Award winning renaissance artist – and self-described “simple man” – Nash has contributed a wealth of songs to the soundtrack of our lives. Moreover, the “I Used to Be a King” singer is a two-time inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, for his work with CSN and his work as a solo artist.
Similarly, the eternal Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism throughout her extensive career. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence continues to shine brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 55-album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century.
The Sub Rosa Sessions Concert Series will return to Syracuse for the first time since 2017. The concert series consists of intimate monthly shows meant to highlight local talent and up-and-coming national acts.
The term Sub Rosa comes from Latin “under the rose” meaning something done secretly. Like the name suggests, Sub Rosa flourishes in the underground, not only highlighting underground artists, but also taking place in a new secret downtown venue.
The first revival show will feature Baltimore-based Americana band June Star, and Central New York singer-songwriter Khalil Jade. Since 1998, June Star have released 16 studio albums helping to spread their unique take on roots music to the masses. Led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Grimm, their unique lyricism and grungy instrumentation give them a sound unlike any other Americana group. The band also features Dave Hadley, whose masterful steel pedal guitar aids in their signature sound.
Khalil Jade is a singer-songwriter and a staple of Central New York’s live scene. Her original pieces blend folk, Americana, and blues to create a unique style of singer-songwriter music. With her acoustic guitar and soft, soulful voice, Jade crafts songs about the joys and struggles of life.
Sub Rosa: Then and Now
Singer-songwriter Amanda Rogers started the Sub Rosa Concert Series in 2014. For four years, the concert series was a staple of Syracuseâs music scene, acting as a platform for local bands and artists. Syracuse’s SubCat Studios originally hosted the concerts at their downtown location. The concerts not only allowed for artists to showcase their works in an intimate setting, but also to have their shows professionally recorded. In addition to live music, the concerts featured meet and greets, refreshments and exclusive performance CDs.
The Sub Rosa Concert Series will return to Syracuse on May 31. The concerts will continue to take place from 6-9 PM on the last Thursday of every month. Starting in May, they will take place in a secret speak-easy like venue in Downtown Syracuse. Attendees will meet at the Tectonic Hand statue in front of Syracuse City Hall at 5:55 PM before being guided to the venue.
Tickets are currently on sale at $30, which includes entrance, refreshments and more. Attendance for the event is capped at 80 people to ensure an intimate concert environment for “the best under the radar music from around the world.”

Sonya Cohen Cramer (1965-2015), the singular vocalist, graphic designer, and art director is being honored again with the new track “When I Was Most Beautiful,” ahead of the first-ever collection dedicated fully to her music, You’ve Been a Friend to Me, releasing on May 17 via Smithsonian Folkways.
Sonya Cohen Cramer was raised in a family committed to revitalizing the oldest songs of the American musical canon. Like her father John Cohen of The New Lost City Ramblers and her mother Penny Seeger, she believed in the transformative qualities of folk songs and traditional ballads. She has collaborated with her aunt Peggy Seeger, uncle Pete Seeger, Elizabeth Mitchell, Daniel Littleton, and the folk-fusion group Last Forever. She was the granddaughter of musicologist Charles Seeger and the avant-garde composer Ruth Crawford Seeger, and her godfather was Folkways founder Moe Asch. While shaped by the roots of her family tree, the radiating and clear sound of Cramer’s voice is distinctly her own.
Known mainly for her graphic design work for Folkways, her musicianship during her time in the New York Times-acclaimed folk band Last Forever (featuring composer and producer Dick Connette) was admired by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Loudon Wainwright III, Meredith Monk, and Joe Boyd. The upcoming project reveals her life as both a familial and mission symbol of the Folkways ethos, committed to revitalizing the oldest songs of Folkways Records and the American musical canon.
“When I Was Most Beautiful” incorporates lyrics from a poem Pete Seeger found while on tour in Japan in 1967 and got permission to record in the 60s for Columbia Records. Seeger accompanies Sonya on guitar for this version. The two performed this anti-war tune together at the Library of Congress in 2007.

Dan Navarro brought his decades of finely crafted songs and well-honed performance skills to a standing-room only house at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs on Friday, May 3.
Dan Navarro at Caffe Lena
Navarro, who introduced himself by promising his audience “two hours of the most depressing songs you’ve ever heard”, delivered two sets of original contemporary folk songs, all of which he wrote or co-wrote, including “Circling The Drain”, which he opened the show with, “Bullet Proof Heart”, “Rose In The Window”, “Horizon Line” and “We Belong”. He performed on both six and twelve string Taylor acoustic guitars.
Dan Navarro at Caffe Lena
Dan preceded some of his performances with explanations as to how the song came to be written or the dynamics of co-writing. He talked of how co-writer Deborah Holland suggested he might want to listen to some lyrics she wrote for a song she’d titled “Circling The Drain”, to which he commented that he thought it was the “worst song idea I’ve ever heard”, and then she sent what she’d written so far and the song ultimately became their co-write of that title. He described how at one point he really didn’t think “We Belong”, which he co-wrote with long time songwriting and performing partner Eric Lowen, would amount to much, and then it became a huge hit for Pat Benatar and continues to appear in film, TV and countless other placements. And he described his long relationship with Eric Lowen as having been like that of an old married couple, saying: “We hung together for over thirty years, fought like hell and never had sex.”
Dan Navarro at Caffe Lena
Dan Navarro graced the crowd with a wonderful and inspiring pearl of wisdom about life based upon his own experiences, saying: “If I’d have stood on my anger, my pride and my bitterness, I’d have never lived the life I’ve lived…or had the successes I’ve had…When you’re swimming in poison, regret and fear and someone reaches out with an olive branch…do it.” Then he launched into “Bulletproof Heart”, one of his solo writes, and told us after he finished the song that at a recent performance in Arizona, the woman who inspired the song showed up. He didn’t elaborate!
Dan Navarro at Caffe Lena
Toward the end of the show, he told the audience that he continues to perform in his seventies simply because he loves it, and that that love of what he does drives him to the point that he doesn’t believe he can ever stop. Judging from the crowd’s reaction to his performance of song after song, his audiences will never stop showing up to listen.
Dan Navarro at Caffe Lena
Navarro was backed up by bass player/recording engineer Mark Dann of Woodstock, NY who varied between laying down supportive, mindfully chosen simple accompaniment to Navarro’s single note playing and weaving skillfully crafted, spontaneous, lead-guitar-like melodic base lines into Navarro’s chordal passages. Navarro pointed out that he and Dann had not had a single practice session, but that he’d given the bass player no more than a set list, and presumably the key and basic progression for each song. Mark Dann’s skills at producing spontaneous creativity were quite evident.

The show was part of Navarro’s continuing 2024 US tour, with NY performances at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs and Song Salon at Graveside Variety in Woodstock; and in support of his most recent solo album release, “Horizon Line”, and his duo album with James Lee Stanley, “All Wood and Led”, which he described as an acoustic “Laurel Canyon” reimagination of famous Led Zeppelin tunes, from which he played his version of “Whole Lotta Love”.
Dan Navarro at Caffe Lena
In addition to his work for decades as a singer songwriter, which have included not only his own recordings, songs he has written or cowritten have been recorded and performed by Pat Benatar, The Bangles, The Temptations, Dionne Warwick and others. Navarro’s songs have appeared in films including Deadpool 2, Pitch Perfect 2 and Talladega Nights and TV series including This Is Us and The Office. And he has performed as a singer and voice actor in movies including Encanto, Coco, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, and Pirates of the Carribean 5, to name a few.
Dan Navarro at Caffe Lena
During the show Navarro mentioned that it “means the world to me to be in this room” and told the audience that his ties to Caffe Lena go back to 1986 when he and his former co-writing and performance duo partner, Eric Lowen, sat in a field not far from Saratoga at Lowen’s parents’ house staring at the stars and Lowen told him about Caffe Lena’s rich history. Navarro first played at Caffe Lena in 1998 and has played and taught songwriting there on numerous occasions since.
Dan Navarro at Caffe Lena
A tribute to Navarro’s songwriting skill was the presence of numerous New York State local and regional songwriters in the crowd – Michael Eck who recently performed at Caffe Lena with a release party for his CD “fermata”, Brad Cole of Rhinebeck who has opened for Dan, Carl Rubino who has co-written with Navarro, and CB Smith.
Dan Navarro at Caffe Lena
For his final song, Dan and his bass player worked their way on to the middle of Caffe Lena’s packed floor where he did “We Belong” raw, with no mic or PA. His performance at this legendary listening room once again made evident how special the intimate performances of a smaller venue like Caffe Lena are. You just can’t get the same relationship between performer and audience in a stadium or even large hall.
