  • Ben Folds To Headline Saratoga New Years Eve

    Ben Folds has been announced as the headlining act of the Saratoga New Year’s Eve celebration. The two-day event will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31, and Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, at different venues around the city’s center.

    Ben Folds is a singer-songwriter-composer who has created an enormous body of genre-bending music including pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records. He will cap off the evening at Saratoga Springs City Center.

    The celebration will kick off with a free outdoor concert by local funk band Tops of Trees on Ellsworth Jones Place, located just outside of the Saratoga Springs City Center. Fireworks, launched from the top level of the City Center’s parking garage, will accompany this performance from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

    Mystic Bowie’s Talking Dreads will perform at the historic Universal Preservation Hall. Jamaican-born frontman Mystic Bowie reimagines and infuses fresh life into the Talking Heads’ classic catalog with his mix of roots reggae and ska. Since 2015, the charismatic singer and performer has electrified audiences at hundreds of shows across North America – spinning the heads of initially skeptical Talking Heads fans, and getting everyone else grooving along to the infectious, joyous rhythms and jubilant spirit of his native island. This and other performances by Los Sugar Kings, Dogs in a Pile, and Lindsey Kraft will be held throughout the day.

    The festivities will conclude on New Year’s Day with the Saratoga First Day 5K, a fun and healthy tradition for runners and anyone looking to start 2025 off right.

  • Alt-Rockers Badfish Announce 2025 ‘Gimme the Gold Tour’, 3 NY Dates

    Alternative/Reggae group Badfish have announced the “Gimme the Gold Tour 2025” which sees dates in Buffalo, Saratoga and Brooklyn in February.

    For nearly 25 years, Badfish have channeling the music and live performance of reggae/punk/ska legends Sublime with a reverence to the ingenuity of Sublime’s songs – and a vibe all their own. Sublime is arguably one of the most influential and enduring acts of their generation. In 2001, Rhode Island-based Badfish was formed as a fun project with one goal: to perform the Sublime songs they knew and loved for fans who shared that love. It didn’t take long for this “fun project” to develop into a full-time touring endeavor that persists to this day. 

    Badfish regularly tallies over a hundred shows per year, performing at large-scale festivals and headlining theaters across the US. Now after two decades of celebrating the music of Sublime, Badfish is ready to kick into another gear with the release of some exciting new original tracks on Ineffable Records. Badfish recently released its second new track – the anthemic “F You Pay Me” (featuring Grieves) – as the follow up to the band’s first single “High With You” (featuring Little Stranger). The crowd’s enthusiastic response to these new songs makes them feel right at home alongside Sublime staples in the Badfish set.

    Harnessing this new creative energy, Badfish is set to gear up for their 2025 “Gimme the Gold Tour.” The tour takes the boys around the country where they’ll surely keep the vibes high for some familiar faces and many new ones as well. Badfish’s tour sees three dates in NY on this tour. Firstly, in Buffalo at Town Ballroom on February 2, next in Saratoga Springs at Putnam Den on Feb 20, and lastly on Feb 21 at Brooklyn Bowl in NYC.

  • Meet Mimicking Mars, Syracuse-Based Psychedelic Rockstars Bringing the Noise

    Mimicking Mars is a four-piece psychedelic indie-rock band formed in 2020 and currently playing out of Syracuse. The band originated in Monroe, NY and first came to notability in 2021.

    Mimicking Mars is known for their unique sound which blends indie rock with elements of psychedelic and alternative rock. The group started in 2020, with original members Jeremy Lanuti, James Dawson, Josh LeVisuer, and Bobby Malone, as a creative outlet, and quickly became something much more important to each of them. The group is now based in Syracuse NY, as they conquer a new phase for their career. 

    The band started writing and performing, and since starting has released 7 singles and is constantly performing live. Their shows are a must-see, as the band’s energy is infectious, and their music comes to life on stage. Mimicking Mars is not just a band, they are a collective of artists who strive to create an experience that is both authentic and meaningful. They’ve just released their debut studio album Janky Jones & the Blackjack Blues, which is currently available on all streaming platforms.

    Kingston, New York is steeped in history. Once the ancestral lands of the Munsee people, it became a permanent settlement for Dutch colonists in 1652 and designating as New York State’s first capital in 1777.

    Fast forwarding to today, this thriving HudsonValley community now serves as the base for O+ (pronounced O Positive), a non-profit organization creating its own history with a unique paradigm: artists exchanging their art for medical care.

    From October 11-13th 2024, Kingston hosted O+’s annual festival, now in its fourteenth year. The three-day event raised awareness and funds for the organization, offering an immersive gathering of musicians, writers, dancers, spoken-word performers, and visual artists. In exchange for their contributions, participating artists received healthcare services.

    The festivities kicked off Friday night with a parade starting at Keegan Ales. With their three stages, Keegan Ales served as a musical hub, offering a wide range of musical experiences—from metal and rock to hip hop, house, and techno.

    The Old Dutch Church, a historical landmark dating back to 1659, anchored the festival in Uptown Kingston. Featured performers Neko Case, Rhett Miller & The All Stars, and Kate Pierson graced the church’s stage. Festivalgoers could purchase wristbands for full access to multiple stages, performance spaces, and presentations, all within walking distance of the church.

    One of the festival’s hidden gems was the Utility Bicycle Works stage, tucked away in the back of a local bicycle shop. Though the room was small, it offered an intimate atmosphere that amplified the performances. Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Sug Daniels bared her soul to a captivated audience. The six-piece band King in Yellow defied the space’s physical limitations with their commanding presence.

    On Sunday night at the Old Dutch Church, O+ concluded with a special screening and panel discussion of The Blair Witch Project which coincided with the film’s 25th anniversary. Moderated by actress and musician Amanda Seyfried, the panel featured director Ed Sanchez and actors Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams.

  • Trophy Wife ‘Get Ugly’ Album Release Show at TV Eye

    As the red velvet curtain parted at TV Eye on Friday, October 18, McKenzie Iazetta of Trophy Wife stepped up to her microphone to cheers from the audience. The band’s lead singer wore a red and white polka dot dress with a skirt showing the tattoos down her legs, ending in frilly white socks and black velvet Mary Janes. She exerted complete control over the audience, standing like a pouty doll come to life with her hair glowing and eyes glinting in the stage lights as she strummed their opening song, “I Will Be Here.” Alongside her were bandmates Christian Pace on bass, Michael Martelli on drums, and Rowan Martin on guitar. 

    A month ago, a song called “Keep It” came across my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist. I had never heard of Trophy Wife, but the single’s cover caught my attention and I gave it a listen. I was instantly captured by the song’s vocals, which hover on the edge of breaking while constantly building in intensity. The drums have a raw, heavy sound like they’re pounding against the aluminum door of someone’s garage. The song builds and builds and builds from a cry to a wail as it asks the listener, “Do you want someone else to make it better?” 

    Trophy Wife followed this incredible single with two others leading up to the release of their first album, Get Ugly. The final single, “Swamp Song,” is another heavy hitter. Opening with the screeching frustration of amp feedback and pumping drums, giving way to sweeter vocals. It’s a bittersweetness that turns quickly to frustration and anger, with the song’s chorus introducing off-kilter guitar chords before cutting out everything in favor of croaking vocals.

    “The Shame” is Trophy Wife’s most shoegaze-y offering on the album. It opens with a wistful guitar twang that conjures summer days. Then, as the drums grow more frenetic, we enter the first chorus, a breakdown that feels like heaving sobs with its all-encompassing distorted tone. 

    Behind it all is fantastic production across the entire album. The mix doesn’t leave any element behind, knowing exactly when to shift focus between instrumentation and vocals, allowing the totality of its emotional impact to reach the listener. This is a band punching way above their weight.

    Trophy Wife’s drama and tone make them a unique act to witness. McKenzie Iazzetta’s vocal control is the key to that drama, riding the line between breaking and keeping it all together. They combine incredible technical skill with a captivating stage presence, ensuring their strong fanbase will only continue to grow.

  • Phantogram Announces 2025 Headline Tour “Running Through Colors” with Stop at Brooklyn Paramount

    Electro-rock duo Phantogram have announced their 2025 headline tour of North America which begins on January 15. The tour begins in Las Vegas, NV and wraps up on February 28 in Hollywood, CA.

    Lauded as an experimental and alternative band and one that’s never been married to a particular genre, Phantogram have continued to alter soundscapes for almost a decade by consistently challenging sound with their signature blend of hard-hitting beats, guitar driven dark psychedelia and electronic pop.  The “Running Through Colors Tour” stops at Brooklyn Paramount in NYC on February 6.

    The band recently released their fifth album, Memory Of A Day via Neon Gold Records. The new album captures that disorienting sense of time travel sparked by a color or song that recalls the most joyful and tragic moments in your life. Alongside the LP, the duo – Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter – have shared their latest single, the driving, and wistful burst of color, “Attaway.”

  • Bands Do BK Presents The Music Matters NYC VHS Compilation

    Brooklyn based project Bands Do BK has announced the official VHS compilation release of live performances from a 3-day, 15-band event held at Arlene’s Grocery earlier this May.

    Born out of a desire to bring musicians to fans and vice versa throughout Brooklyn and beyond, Bands do BK is a project designed to offer readers uncut perspectives of the borough from their favorite local artists and musicians. From personable conversation, spotlights on new releases, and events hosted for fans and creators alike, Bands do BK avoids pomp and pretense in favor of genuine content curated for music lovers and makers, by music lovers and makers.

    Back in May of this year, Bands do BK put on a powerful three-day event at the iconic Arlene’s Grocery comprised of 15 emerging bands of the local indie scene. Capturing the liveliness of the tightly knit NYC music scene throughout every set while in a historically significant area that has consistently provided a space for creatives and musicians alike, the event was a major hit. 

    Now, in an exciting one-of-a-kind VHS compilation, the project and its impactful message have been further immortalized. Spearheaded by Executive Producer Marc Seligman and Production Coordinator (and Bands do BK Curator) Sam Sumpter, The Music Matters NYC is a 67 minute testament to the immortality of music in New York City and the newest voices taking that charge.

    Artists featured in the compilation correspond with the original performance dates- day one’s Big Girl, Tilden, A Very Special Episode, Tetchy, and TVOD are showcased alongside day two’s O. Wake, NEVVA, Two-Man Giant Squid, Mary Shelley, and day three’s AVATAREDEN, Jelly Kelly, Go Home, Night Spins, and SKORTS.

    Largely inspired by the authentic work of these artists and a vision of capturing the essence of their performances in a genuine way, a simple documentary-style idea quickly developed into the nostalgic experience that is a VHS release- a perfect call back to analog recordings that pays homage to the timelessness of New York City’s indie music scene alongside a uniquely nostalgic viewer experience.

    The event’s performances were subsequently recorded by a top-tier crew including Brad Wagner and Juan Soria on audio and video production assisted by Charlie Peterson, Jeff Schaer-Moses on photography, and Jason Toledo on video editing in addition to being a co-producer. 

    To be released on Friday November 1, the official The Music Matters NYC VHS compilation will be available through Bands do BK, Arlene’s Grocery, Village Revival Records, and all of the bands featured at their shows.

  • Olivia Reid Releases Heartwarming New Single “Love Don’t Leave”

    Indie-pop artist Olivia Reid has announced the release of her latest heartwarming single “Love Don’t Leave.”

    Based in NYC, Olivia Reid’s unique production style blends indie acoustics with exploratory pop soundscapes, creating a distinctive sonic space to express her most inward emotions.   • Foster The People Announce ‘Paradise State of Mind Tour’ with Stop at Brooklyn Paramount in February

    Famed indie-pop group Foster The People have announced their anticipated Paradise State of Mind Tour which sees a single stop at Brooklyn Paramount on February 24, 2025.

    The upcoming North American headline tour is set to hit 23 cities in all, including a stop in Brooklyn, NY at the Brooklyn Paramount on February 24, 2025. The tour begins October 11 in Austin, Texas, and finishes on March 6, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. Foster The People will host special guest Good Neighbours for the entirety of the tour. The eagerly awaited tour celebrates the recent arrival of Foster The People’s acclaimed new album, Paradise State of Mind.     “I think the trickiest part about this record was trying to be authentic about what had been going on with me, without writing something super dark and without glossing over it, either. Because, to me, it was really important that hope remain at the core of this whole thing. People need hope. I need hope. And when I think about what hope is – it’s having the courage to walk towards something that you think can be better, while fully acknowledging the darkness and reality around you. That was the goal, walking into this album, which was actually really tricky – to make something that rang true to what was on my mind, but that had this much groove and that would be fun to dance to. You know, to me, they’re like Trojan Horses, the message is hiding in the melody.”

  • Jeff Tweedy Kicks Off Rare Solo Tour In Woodstock

    For the first of three weekend shows at the Bearsville Theatre, Jeff Tweedy performed unplugged highlights from his Wilco and solo catalog, along with three newly penned and unrecorded songs.

    Tweedy’s hour and a half, sold-out concert in Woodstock on Friday, October 10, also marked the first of 15 relatively rare solo show dates that will wrap up in Menlo Park, CA at the end of the month.

    Tweedy kicked things off with “Feel Free” and “Now and Then,” two new tunes that have yet to appear on an official release. The former has been in steady rotation for the good part of a year, and has playful lyrics and a positive message about individuality. 

    While Tweedy is used to his bandmates in Wilco backing him up, he seemed equally comfortable with his Bearsville backdrop — several small body vintage Martin guitars with his beloved dead string sound. Before he kicked into the crowd-pleaser “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” he traded one guitar for another that could have been its twin. Tweedy joked that the guitar looked exactly the same, sounded pretty much the same, but had a minor variation in serial number. Guitar nerd stuff for certain.

    Solo Tweedy may well be the best Tweedy. He’s alternately the guitar collector, the Gen-X Bob Dylan, the troubadour, and more than a bit of a standup comedian. When the house lights went out momentarily after the second song of the night, Tweedy joked, “I don’t need full darkness ever, I carry that with me.” And he’s right – while his stage banter often elicits laughs from the audience, his solo material skews dark and his lyrical content has directly taken on the weighty themes of familial love and death. Tweedy called “Having Been Is No Way To Be,” “KC Rain,” and “Don’t Forget” his own “dead dad trilogy” and while he may have been leaning into the gallows humor, the songs themselves were confessional and poignant in this intimate setting.

    Tweedy seemed almost relieved to have the opportunity to play whatever he wanted to a knowledgeable audience of fans. The diehards in attendance managed to make an obscure song like “Laminated Cat” off of the side project Loose Fur’s first album feel like a sing along to a Top 40 hit (the performance of “Laminated Cat” was probably my favorite moment of the evening, and full-disclosure, yes, I’m one of those mega-fans that owns the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot super deluxe box set on vinyl and obsesses over cutting room floor outtakes. But isn’t that like half of Wilco’s fan base at this point?). Many of the fans in the audience planned a whole weekend around these Bearsville shows and planned to attend all three nights. Tweedy hoped to play a lot of “solo songs or songs I’ve written for someone else. I’ll still play Wilco songs, but I really do play those songs a lot.”

    And while the night did rely heavily on new songs, and tracks off of solo albums like Love is the King (“Gwendolyn”) and Warmer (“Family Ghost”, “Evergreen”) or even his Starship Casual newsletter (“Lou Reed Was My Babysitter”), Tweedy did dig out a number of Wilco “Greatest Hits”, which (maybe begrudgingly for Jeff) were still the undeniable highlights of the night. “Hummingbird”, with it’s delightful whistling outro, and a downtempo rendition of  “Box Full of Letters” were both excellent. For “Via Chicago”, Tweedy replaced his bandmates with a harmonica necklace, and in turn became a one-man-band. Tweedy’s best analogues really are Bob Dylan and Neil Young, guys who are songwriters at their core. They can rock in an electric setting, but they also have the magnetism, confidence, charisma, and lyrics to hold the spotlight on their own, or to let the song take the spotlight by itself. And they all look cool as hell wearing their harmonicas while also strumming and singing.

    Tweedy closed the night on a positive note, dedicating “I’m The Man Who Loves You” to his wife Susie Tweedy, whom he’d hoped would accompany him to Woodstock from their home in Chicago. Unfortunately, Susie Tweedy’s 92-year-old dad was in the hospital and she needed to stay close to him. To this remark, several audience members mentioned Mrs. Tweedy’s father by name, and Jeff chuckled at the parasocial relationship so many of his fans have with him. He’s shared a lot with his fans, but his fans are certainly prone to digging into the life of their favorite singer-songwriter. Tweedy may be creeping towards 60, but he is prolific as ever as a songwriter, a writer of terrific memoirs, and an internet presence in his newsletter. And let us not forget The Tweedy Show, a webcast that many Wilco fans embraced during the COVID lockdown as it drew back the curtain on Tweedy family life, making Susie, Jeff, and sons Spencer and Sammy, something of an indie Partridge Family.

    While it might be easy to call Wilco super-fans overzealous, Tweedy’s remarkable songbook and magnetism are certainly worthy of deep study. A few tickets remain for the Sunday evening show — get them before someone else does.

    Chicago-based songwriter Elizabeth Moen opened the show with a half hour set. Her excellent vocal stylings which were at times reminiscent of Stevie Nicks and Lucinda Williams were supported by the harmony vocals, bass, and guitar of Gus Martini. Moen’s bluesy and soulful originals like “Fields on Fire” and “The Empty Bottle” felt right at home in Woodstock, the home of classic laid-back rustic albums by the likes of Van Morrison and Bobby Charles. But it was the duo’s take on Bruce Springsteen’s classic “Darkness at the Edge of Town” that stood out the most for its fine performance and unique interpretation.
