  • Selett Releases Breathtaking Self-Titled EP

NYC-based songwriter Selett just released her new EP on January 26, Selett. The EP features a total of four tracks and comes across just under 15 minutes that showcase the artist’s potential and the power of self-discovery.

Selett has been creating music and performing consistently, thrusting her sound into the spotlight and solidifying her mark in the NYC music scene. In the four track EP Sellet, the songs work together to create a message and the feeling of dread, worldly unknowns that lie ahead, and scars and memories from the past that one would prefer to forget. For instance in “Mourning Dove”, the theme takes form in the context of people’s relationships– both healthy and unhealthy– with one another and with themselves, intense vocals, and overwhelming yet amazing instrumentals backing each message.

Each song on the EP takes the artist and the audience in a striking direction while also staying consistent in theme and tone. In “Wheels Within Wheels”, the anachronistic tune starts a very lifting piano before the singer’s vocal introduce the track’s dizzying themes of infinite regression, while in the beginning moments on “Hey Hey”, Selett immediately grasps the listeners with an intoxicating beat that builds in each measure as the singer adds in one instrument after another.

In celebration of her self-titled EP release, the singer also released the visualizer for the subtly magnificent single. In the visually pleasing visualizer for “Hey Hey”, the artist notes the delving  deep into the human quest for dignity and meaning. “It’s like a dance, intimate moments unfolding, kissing away fog, and passion expanding into the cosmos. There’s a lot of metaphorical guidance and searching. It’s a poetic journey, inviting you into this shared mystery, where each heart finds echoes of its own history. It’s emotional, it’s transformative, and it’s all about resonating with the messy, beautiful human experience.” Selett states.

In the self-titled EP, Selett shows a testament to the power of vulnerability, self-discovery, and just a taste of what the songwriter’s creative being is about. The singer/songwriter is known for working with artists like David Terranova who has been producing emotive and immersive voice, Charley Drayton, Parker Kindred and others whose artistry has enriched her layers of sound and meaning within each track.

Selett has been on a run which has given the singer various reasons to celebrate. Not only will the artist have new songs to perform to and share with her fans, but she will also be performing on February 16 at the Connolly’s Klub 45 in NY. Tickets and more information about the artist can be found here.

  • Hearing Aide: “Flight of The BumBillB” – A Few Laughs and One Very Uncomfortable History Lesson on The Latest Release from Buffalo’s Bill Bachmann

Flight of The BumBillB is the latest release from Buffalo native Bill Bachmann.  This is the third full length album from the multi instrumentalist songwriter, who plays every instrument on the album’s 14 songs.  Bachmann is a true wordsmith who expertly uses wit and humor in his music.

Flight of The BumBillB lands between Weird Al Yankovic and Bob Dylan and somewhere between the city of Buffalo and the heart of Appalachia – Bluegrass, Americana, DooWop, Blues and even a parody of a Christmas classic, it’s all in there.

Hearing Aide: "Flight of The BumBillB" from Buffalo’s Bill Bachmann

“Size Don’t Matter on a Banjo” kicks off the album and is a tone setter for the humor and music that is about to come.  In a song that would fit perfectly in Disney’s Country Bear Jamboree, Bachmann takes shots at lawyers, harmonica players (who only suck half of the time), and even himself.

The jazzy and funky sounds of “I’m a Real Man” are a stark contrast to the Bluegrass of the opening track. The lyrics are almost pure stand up comedy and some of Bachman’s finest on the album.  Couples beware! You will relate to this one, and that’s where it’s beauty truly lies.

As the title suggests, “Telecasterbatur” is full of sexual innuendos and double entendres. Bachmann is not very subtle on this not for kids tune which features some nice slide guitar.

“Big Bad Josh” is a parody of Jimmy Dean’s classic “Big Bad John”.  Big Bad Josh is in fact Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and this tune sounds like it could be heard around tailgates and bars in Buffalo. Bachmann professes his love for his hometown team and predicts The Bills in “The Big Game” and Josh Allen heading to The Hall of Fame…maybe next year.

Hearing Aide: "Flight of The BumBillB" from Buffalo’s Bill Bachmann

Bachmann gets back to comedy through the middle of the album with parodies of “Turkey in The Straw” and “Blue Yodel”, the latter singing the laments of a big trust fund.

“Double Negative” has a classic folk sound and lyrics like “How Much I Do Not, Not Love You.” A simple ditty that’s either a grammar teacher’s dream or worst nightmare.

“Buffalo To Washington” is a musical journey from Buffalo, New York south through Pennsylvania and Maryland enroute to our nation’s capital and features a very catchy sing-a-long chorus.

Nine songs deep into the album “Full Moon” finally delivers a serious love song.  The production on this one sounds very modern, almost garage band like or  “band in a box”.  The production, or lack of, seems to take away from the classic style of “Full Moon” which harkens back to great songs like “Blue Moon” and other classics from The Great American Songbook.

Things seem to get a little jumbled and repetitive heading into the final stretch of “Flight of The BumBillB”. “Girls and Boys in The Ivy” is a parody of The Drifters classic “Poison Ivy”, taking shots at Ivy League students “memorizing elements and fighting about statistics”.  “Male in The Czech” sounds like it could be a Monkees song with a bad punchline and “Pissed Off at Christoph” seems to miss the mark.

What starts as a parody of “Ghost Riders In The Sky”, “Check Writers in Disguise” soon becomes a very uncomfortable and almost vulgar bio of The Kennedy Family.  Blaming Marilyn Monroe’s death on her singing “or the drugs”, Hush Money, Harvard scandals, and the death of Mary Jo Kopechne in Chappaquiddick leading to a “permanent senate seat” for Ted Kennedy are just a few of the ways Bachmann shows his disdain for the Kennedy Family. A song that is irreverent at the least, crosses any line appropriateness with the songwriter’s account of a rape on the beach.  This song is vulgar and politically incorrect with total lack of taste and empathy. It is the only track on  the entire album which evokes any real thought or emotion other than the occasional chuckle. In today’s watered down, politically correct “Me Too” world is this true art or just shock value amid an album of fluff?

Flight of The BumBillB concludes with “Santa Claws Are Coming To Town”, Bachman’s dark twist on the holiday classic.

You can find Flight of The BumBillB on streaming platforms including Bill Bachman’s YouTube page and his official website BillBachmannMusic.com

  • Mt. Joy Heads To Madison Square Garden on Upcoming Tour

Indie rock band Mt. Joy have announced their 2024 headline tour throughout North America and Europe, with support from Zach Bryan and Noah Kahan. The five-piece band will make their debut at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 28.

    Mt. Joy Madison Square Garden

With the tour set to kick off on April 6 in Teton Village in WY, the Alt-rock band will headline in their hometown of Philadelphia on Sept. 20 at the Mann Music Center. After the success of their 2023 shows at the Mann, Mt. Joy including Sotiris Eliopoulos on drums, Jackie Miclau on keyboards, and Michael Byrnes on bass, Matt Quinn vocals and guitar with guitarist Samm Cooper will once again partner with Philadelphia’s Sharing Access to host a non-perishable food drive before making their stop at the Madison Square Garden on September 28, marking the first time Mt. Joy has headlined MSG.

Sharing Excess (SE) is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that uses surplus food as a solution to scarcity. While over 40 million people in the US face food insecurity, nearly 40% of the nation’s food supply is going to waste. The organization’s mission is to bridge the gap between excess and scarcity by partnering with grocery stores, restaurants, wholesalers, and farmers to deliver surplus food to a network of nonprofits, food banks, and community organizations to alleviate local food insecurity. The organization also works with over 200 food businesses to deliver 10 million meals annually to over 330 organizations and 38 pop-up distribution locations across 66 zip codes in Mt. Joy’s hometown Philadelphia.

Founded in 2016 by vocalist/ guitarist Matt Quinn with guitarist Samm Cooper, the band first released their debut single “Astrovan” which led to the massive success of the band as they went to perform at festivals and on tour throughout North America and Europe. After their tour with Lumineers was cut short due to a pandemic, Mt. Joy released their second studio album Rearrange in 2020, and then their third album, Orange Blood in the summer of 2022.

The band will continue their worldwide tour throughout 2024 and ticket for all Mt. Joy shows, including Madison Square Garden, can be purchased here.

  • Khruangbin Announce Tour, Coming to Buffalo, Saratoga Springs, and Queens

Alt trio Khruangbin has announced they are embarking on a major North American tour with support from Hermano Gutiérrez, John Carroll Kirby, Peter Cat Recording Co., Men I Trust, and Arooj Aftab. The A LA SALA tour features a date at SPAC on May 26, Buffalo at Rockin’ At The Knox on May 28, and two dates at Forest Hills Stadium on Sept. 20 and 21.

    Khruangbin tour

Khruangbin was formed in 2009 with Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums. They take their influence from 1960s Thai funk with their name translating to “Engine Fly” in Thai. The group has toured across the world, with praise from the NY Times, Billboard, and more. The trio recently announced their fourth studio album A LA SALA, their first LP in four years out on April 5. From the get-go, their journey has been its own, ignoring pop expectations and relying on internal aspirations and visions. The building blocks for A LA SALA’s 12 songs were pieces found in Khruangbin’s creative past, parts of the band not lost, but not yet tapped into.

Over the last two years, Khruangbin has sold out shows at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre and London’s Alexandra Palace, released five live LPs showcasing their stage prowess – featuring guests such as Toro y Moi, Men I Trust and Nubya Garcia, collaborated with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré honoring his late father, Ali Farka Touré, with the album Ali, and released their second collaborative EP with Leon Bridges, the sultry, chart-topping Texas Moon.

The Ecuadorian-Swiss sibling duo Hermanos Gutiérrez will be supporting Khruangbin on a run of shows in April. Known for their psychedelic, world-building guitar music, they just released their newest single  “Blood Milk Moon”, a spacious and spectral tune that was hailed by WNYC as “night music that is somehow not dark” and named to UPROXX’s Best New Indie list. The single represents the group’s first new music since 2022’s El Bueno Y El Malo, their acclaimed and mythic debut for Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound.

The Khru Club artist presale for the North American tour starts on Tuesday, January 30 at 10 am local time, Spotify Fans’ first pre-sale is on January 31 @ 10 am local time, local/venue presale on Thursday, February 1 @ 10 am local time and regular on sale Friday, February 2 @ 10 am local time. • In Focus: Searows Play to a Sold-Out Crowd at the Mercury Lounge on First Headline Tour

Indie-folk artist Alec Duckart, known professionally as Searows, played a sold-out show January 25 at New York City’s Mercury Lounge as part of his first headline tour.

The show was the last of the tour’s U.S. leg and his second in the NYC area, having played Brooklyn venue Baby’s All Right the day before. The intimate, 250-capacity Mercury Lounge proved to be a cozy home for Duckart’s serene sound.

    searows

The crowd of fans, mostly in their teens and twenties, cheered and shouted “I love you”s while Duckart tuned his guitar, before opening with his 2023 single “Older.” The room was hushed as Duckart captivated his audience—the crowd swayed and sang along quietly, but many were silently transfixed by Duckart’s blissful acoustic guitar and poetic lyrics.

    searows

Duckart wrote, recorded, and produced his own debut album Guard Dog, which was released in September 2022. In 2023, Duckart released the single “House Song,” which has amassed nearly 20 million streams on Spotify. By the end of that year, Duckart signed to Matt Maltese’s record label, Last Recordings on Earth, and released his six-track EP End Of The World, which his ongoing tour is promoting.

    searows

Now that the U.S. leg of the tour is complete, Duckart will make stops in London and Paris. Duckart previously toured as a supporting act for artists including Maltese, Gracie Abrams, and Leith Ross.

  • John Vincent III Live In New York City at Bowery Ballroom

On January 18, night one of John Vincent III’s sold out double-header at the Bowery Ballroom, family, friends, and loyal fans who’ve waited nearly five years for a performance from Vincent packed the 600 occupant venue. John Vincent III and his band opened their mini-tour of five stops in New York City in celebration of their newest record, Songs For The Canyon.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

Celebrating the close-knit musical nature of New York, he sourced two local performers to open the evening: AYLA and Noah Pope, two impressive lyricists and advocates of acoustic simplicity. AYLA is an East Village native who pulled in a crowd of her own. With her teal guitar and dream-state poetry, she was the warmest icebreaker. Noah Pope, fresh to the city from Nashville, followed suit with a kind demeanor and unique vocal offering. His soft and cloudy voice designed for folk music and a knack for the harmonica proved him a surefire crowd favorite.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

In between sets, the audience conversed quietly and showed off their new merchandise emulating Vincent’s newest record, Songs For The Canyon (2023). Their excitement for John Vincent III was genuine, like that of a supportive friend. The tight quarters enabled friendships to form, strangers packed shoulder to shoulder spoke to one another, their smiles lingering.

When the Bowery lights dimmed, John Vinent III made his way onto stage solo to take a seat in front of the rustic piano. On the finger-stained keys he played the show into motion. Following his intro, his band made their way on stage to take their places behind their respective instruments. A drumset, an electric guitar, an acoustic guitar, and a bass.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

John Vincent III’s stage presence was calm. No amount of high energy compensation was needed to enhance his performance. The poetry did all the heavy lifting. Each song would be introduced by title, maybe a slight anecdote was given of its origin, and the band would deliver folk-brilliance. Second song on the setlist, “City Rain,” third song “Lover of Mine,” an audience safehold.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

“I don’t really know what this song is about… I guess getting excited about the unknown I suppose.” Vincent introduced his fourth song of the evening, “Slow Song.” It’s one of the wonders of music when a song’s “meaning” is not dependent on the literacy of lyrics, but can be tangibly understood through the direction of a melody and the culmination of instrumental sounds.

    John Vincent III bowery ballroom
    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

The audience absorbed everything Vincent had to say, studying up at him eager to know more about his writing, his stories. While his music didn’t warrant an explosion of energetic dance, it offered a more reflective service. Crowd members gently swayed, held themselves and others, and listened with their noses tipped upwards towards the stage trying to hear and uncover the sheet draped over each lyric.

The set turned acoustic, and the band sat back as John Vincent strummed solo on his guitar etched with a hummingbird design. The crowd yewed and softly sang along.

    Photograph by Shauna Hilferty

After an earnest ode to New York City, Vincent thanked his friends and family who made it to night one of their Bowery double-header. The Ohio born and raised, Texas and Los Angeles living traveler pulled in people from all across the country.

Songs For The Canyon, their newest release, is an excellent revival record. Vincent’s lyricism remains tethered to the idea of transience. Each song offers the experience of leaving and coming back while meditating on the people, presence, and life collected along the way. While physical travel is a large player in Vincent’s modality of storytelling, equally is severe isolation. How one can be isolated in time and space through the disablement of thought and attachment – his lyrics break down this paradoxical phenomenon.

The stage lights hued a warm golden orange, like that of a sunset afterglow. This energy perfectly matched the soulful, fire crackle, smoked ambiance of their sound. As the stretch of the show came towards its close, John Vincent III exchanged I love you’s with fans who tossed the words up to him on stage from all corners of the venue.

He closed out the set with one of his most socially acclaimed songs “Next To You,”, with Vincent saying “This is a song I am very grateful for, and without it I don’t think some of you would be here.” The audience harmonized with him, and the ballroom hummed.

After the band left the stage, it wasn’t long before they returned for an encore – the modern day icing on the cake for concerts. People just can’t get enough, and artists never want the plate to clear. The three song finale was intimate. The band brought out stools and played each song acoustically, raw. Their hit, “In My Sheets” warranted a gutty singalong, and a memorable lyric change.

  • Grace Potter Brings the Mother Road to the Capitol Theatre

Grace Potter performed at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on January 18, in support of her 2023 release, Mother Road.  This performance marked the third stop on a tour extending through August.  Backed by a dynamic four-piece band, Potter delivered a two-hour rock exhibition, captivating and thrilling her fans at The Cap.

As the house lights dimmed, a stage metamorphosis evoked the sensation of traveling down Route 66 in the 1960s.  Enveloped in the simulated radiance of tour bus headlights, a silhouette materialized, and Potter took center stage, kicking off the show with “Lady Vagabound” from Mother Road.

The night was a musical inferno, igniting the stage from the instant Grace made her entrance. Throughout the night, Potter embodied a kaleidoscope of personas. In the early moments, she became a tornado, swirling dynamically around the stage.  The song “Your Girl” from Midnight saw Potter confidently striding across the stage, and when “Good Time” hit, it nearly lifted the roof off the house with its electrifying energy.

The evening resonated with an array of new songs. Nearly half of the Mother Road recording found its place in the setlist.  “Ready Set Go,” from Mother Road, showcased Grace’s raw and textured voice, infusing the song with the necessary vigor.  Long time GP & The Nocturnal fans were not left by the wayside. Tunes like “Medicine” and “Ah Mary” made their way to the night’s set list.

In the latter part of the evening, Potter graced the stage alone, accompanied only by her guitar.  During this intimate moment, she presented a heartfelt interpretation of Etta James‘ “I’d Rather Go Blind.”  Her minimal guitar accompaniment, combined with a deep haunting vocal, emerged as the focal point of the night.  While this change in vibe deviated from the earlier energy, it introduced another layer to Grace’s seasoned rock ‘n’ roll expertise.

This was also an evening of musical milestones. Brittney Spencer, the opening act, was releasing her debut album, My Stupid Life, at the stroke of midnight.  Moreover, this was her first time opening for Grace Potter marking another significant first in her burgeoning career.

Recognized recently by Rolling Stone as one of the “25 Artists to Watch,” Spencer demonstrated why she earned such acclaim.  Commanding the stage with a powerful presence and a voice of sultry richness, she allowed her self-penned tunes to resonate not only within the theater but also in the hearts of those who listened.

Spencer collaborated with Potter for two duets during the show. She joined Grace in an acoustic rendition of “Little Hitchhiker” from Mother Road, and later during the encore, they united their voices for a cover of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.”  In each instance, their voices harmonized seamlessly, crafting a singular and exquisite sound.

Potter wrapped up the evening with a four-song encore, starting with a rocking version of “Paris (Ohh La La).”  To bring the night to a close and with the audience illuminating the space with their phone lights, Grace concluded with “Stars.”  The harmonious glow enveloping the hall against the backdrop of darkness orchestrated a melodic moment that transported everyone into a symphonic realm beyond.

The tour takes Potter and crew to The Paramount in Huntington on January 24th, The Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, NJ on January 25th, and The Filmore in Philadelphia on January 26th, with Brittney Spencer opening all three shows.
