Chevy Court Hosts Krockathon Reboot on July 27

After a five-year hiatus, Krockathon is making its long-awaited return to Syracuse on Saturday, July 27 at Chevy Court located in the NYS Fairgrounds.

Since 1996, this iconic festival has been a highlight for rock fans, and this year’s reboot promises to deliver an unforgettable experience with a stellar lineup of bands.

Krockathon Reboot is not just a concert; it’s a full-day festival experience. The Chevy Court Fairgrounds will be buzzing with activity, food and drink vendors, and merchandise stands. The spacious grounds ensure plenty of room to enjoy the music and festival atmosphere comfortably.

Throughout its original run, KRockathon drew hundreds of thousands of rock and metal fans to Central NY to see legendary acts like Deftones, Public Enemy and Korn. Following 21 years of rocking the region, KRockathon went on an indefinite hiatus. Its last showing was in 2018, featuring Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie.

Puddle of Mudd leads the charge, bringing their unmistakable post-grunge sound. Fans can look forward to an electrifying performance featuring hits like “Blurry,” “She Hates Me,” and “Control.”

Hoobastank is set to deliver a powerful set with their blend of alternative rock and post-grunge. Known for the mega-hit “The Reason,” their performance is sure to be a standout moment of the day.

Stabbing Westward, adding a darker, industrial edge to the festival, Stabbing Westward will perform fan favorites such as “Save Yourself” and “What Do I Have to Do?” Expect an intense and dynamic show.

Nonpoint, with their hard-hitting, high-energy performance style, Nonpoint is a must-see. Hits like “Bullet with a Name” and their cover of “In the Air Tonight” will have the crowd headbanging in unison.

Boy Hits Car’s unique fusion of alternative rock and world music influences will add a diverse flavor to the lineup. Their energetic stage presence and catchy songs, including “LoveFuryPassionEnergy,” are sure to engage the audience.

Brand New Sin representing local talent, Brand New Sin brings a gritty, southern rock-inspired sound. Their powerful riffs and heartfelt lyrics will make their set a memorable homecoming for Syracuse rock fans.

In Focus: Secret Dreams Festival Delights the Senses

The third annual Secret Dreams Music and Arts Festival brought together many of the top acts in the EDM and jam scene, including Tipper, the Disco Biscuits, Daily Bread, Detox Unit, Papadosio, Lotus and many more.

Secret Dreams went down in Legend Valley in Thornville, OH from July 18-20 and while the acts on the three main stages drew most of the attention there were workshops and art installations to delight the crowd as they explored to expansive grounds.

Reggae Takes the Stage at the 2024 Great South Bay Music Festival

The second day of the Great South Bay Music Festival on Friday, July 19, was a vibrant celebration of reggae music, transforming Shorefront Park into a haven of laid-back rhythms and positive vibes. The day featured an eclectic mix of reggae, ska, and rock, drawing fans from all over Long Island and beyond.

Main Stage Highlights

Pepper: Formed in 1997 in Hawaii, Pepper has been a staple in the reggae rock scene for over two decades, known for their infectious energy and dynamic sound. They kicked off their set with the energetic “Bring Me Along,” followed by “Rent,” keeping the energy high. Their set also included crowd favorites like “Stone Love” and “Brand New Day,” showcasing their unique blend of reggae and rock. They closed their performance with the powerful “Warning,” from their 2019 album Local Motion.

Streetlight Manifesto: Before Pepper took the stage, Streetlight Manifesto delivered a memorable performance, opening with “Watch It Crash.” They followed with “A Better Place, A Better Time,” captivating the audience with their energy. The band wrapped up their set with “Here’s to Life,” leaving a lasting impression with their blend of ska and punk.

Bandshell – Five Town College Stage

Badfish and Tropidelic: Both bands added to the day’s vibrant atmosphere. Badfish, known for their tribute to Sublime, and Tropidelic, with their funky, high-energy style, kept the crowd dancing and singing along throughout their sets.

Samsara kicked off the performances, followed by the smooth sounds of Aqua Cherry. Nonstop to Cairo brought their high-energy mix of ska and hip-hop, keeping the crowd on their feet. Oogee Wawa closed out the stage with their unique blend of reggae, rock, and hip-hop, creating a perfect end to the dayâs performances.

Jambalaya Stage

The Jambalaya Stage was a hub of reggae and rock fusion, showcasing both local and up-and-coming talent.

IRIEspect started the day with their authentic reggae sound, followed by the Chris Ruben Band, who brought a mix of rock and reggae influences. Enrose and Roots Foundation continued the reggae vibes, with Roots Foundation delivering a standout performance. Formed in 2008 by bassist Corey Browd, this Long Island-based band pays homage to the roots style of reggae, drawing inspiration from legends like Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Steel Pulse, and Peter Tosh. The day on this stage concluded with the dynamic sounds of Half Breeds.

The reggae-themed day at the Great South Bay Music Festival was a testament to the unifying power of music. With a lineup that honored the roots of reggae while embracing its modern evolutions, festival-goers experienced a day of peace, love, and rhythmic bliss. Immerse Yourself in the Heritage of Bluegrass at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival

On a sunny Friday, July 19, the fields of Walsh Farm in Oak Hill, NY, came alive with the strums of banjos and mandolins as the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival kicked off day two of this year’s annual celebration. This festival isn’t just a series of concerts; it’s a community where every chord and lyric weaves deeper into the tapestry of bluegrass tradition.

Grey Fox isn’t just a stop; it’s a destination steeped in the heritage of bluegrass. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the festival draws enthusiasts and families annually, promising not just a top-tier lineup but a vibrant, living celebration of music. With educational tents like the Bluegrass Academy for kids and Jam Central, Grey Fox ensures that the legacy of bluegrass vibrates through every attendee and echoes beyond New York’s borders.

As dawn breaks, Grey Fox awakens to serene yoga and meditation, setting a peaceful tone. This tranquility transitions into lively jam sessions at Jam Central and the Bluegrass Academy for kids, as well as impromptu jams throughout the camping areas. As the day progresses, the smaller stages like Creekside and Gig Rig come alive with intimate performances.

Throughout, attendees navigate a bustling schedule, often catching artists multiple times on different stages, sometimes with special guests. By late afternoon, the energy crescendos with larger crowds gathering at the main stages, where the tents strain to contain enthusiastic fans.

As the night wound down, nobody was in a rush to leave. Instead, they lingered, guitars in hand around campsites, recounting the day’s performances and what they are looking forward to from the rest of the festival. It’s clear why Grey Fox is more than just a festival; it’s a cornerstone of bluegrass culture. With plans already buzzing for next year, it’s evident that for many, Grey Fox is an annual pilgrimage, essential for anyone who cherishes bluegrass and vibrant community gatherings.

July Jam Brings Classic Americana to Accord, New York

On Saturday, July 20, hundreds of passionate music fans gathered at Arrowood Farms in Accord, NY, for Larry & Teresa’s July Jam, a one-day celebration of classic Americana, hosted by industry legends Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams.

July Jam, the brainchild of Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, is a brand-new festival with a mission to celebrate some of the best performers in Americana music in a picture-perfect Hudson Valley setting. This year’s lineup consisted of Connor Kennedy and Onestar, The Secret Sisters, Jackie Greene, Hot Tuna, and the headliners, Larry & Teresa. July Jam came hot on the heels of Campbell and Williams’ most recent album, All This Time, which was released on April 5.

Walking into the festival in its early hours, the energy was off the charts. A steady line of guests holding blankets and lawn chairs patiently filed into the picturesque Arrowood Farms and began densely packing the designated chair area, quickly turning the zone into a colorful wall of people. Another area for only those willing to stand was positioned in front of the chair section. All eyes pointed toward the centerpiece of the festival, the main stage.

The performance stage, a wooden platform decked out with all the lights and speakers that one would expect, was the perfect setting for the stacked lineup of talented Americana artists. A thick forest behind the stage provided the perfect atmospheric backdrop. To the left of the stage was a spacious chicken coop, with the roosters occasionally capping off the ends of songs with a “cock-a-doodle-doo,” which guests always appreciated.

Multiple artisanal stands dotted the back line of the music area. A merch table, a stand with clothing and mini dolls and a face-painting booth had a constant swarm of people eyeing up their goods and services. Off to the side of the main stage was a section for food vendors, which had a diverse variety of offerings for guests, from ice cream to lobster rolls to kebabs. A grid of wide picnic tables ensured that no guest went without a seat to eat.

Throughout the day, periods of intense rain came and went, but the guests stood their ground, unwilling to let a little water ruin the historic day of Americana. During the periods of clear skies, a gentle breeze blew the tantalizing smells of freshly cooked foods throughout the whole grounds.

With the perfect setting of Arrowood Farms for an evening of great music, the performers did not disappoint. From the opening set of Connor Kennedy and Onestar to the night’s finale of Larry & Teresa and Friends, every performance had the crowd going. By the time that the day turned to the evening, the standing area had fully filled up, and the energy rose to new peaks.

After a wonderful set from Hot Tuna, Larry and Teresa capped off the night and were joined by many of the day’s previous artists, perfectly ending July Jam with a full-circle moment. All the billed artists have had a close relationship with Larry and Teresa for years, which made the final moments of the night even more special. Right around 9:30, the last set ended, and the guests left. Based on the inaugural July Jam’s overwhelming success, a second festival next year should be a no-brainer for Campbell and Williams.

In Focus: Pleasantville Music Festival Turns 18

The 2024 Pleasantville Music Festival was held on Saturday, July 13, marking its 18th anniversary. The festival presented eighteen performers on three stages, all within the boundary of one day.

Affectionately referred to as “New York’s Backyard Jam” because of its proximity to NYC, the festival takes the approach of blending up-and-coming, established, and national touring acts.  A cornerstone of the festival’s success is its strategy of not repeating performers, offering returning attendees something new each year.

2024 was the second year that The Garage at Lucy’s in Pleasantville was a gateway for local acts to perform at the festival.  Through a series of battle-of-the-band competitions held at the club, three acts were selected to open the multiple musical stages at the festival.

The Collection / Pamnation Party Stage

The battle-of-the-band winners were comprised of: Gavin Mitchell & Lauren Mian who performed on the Chill Tent Stage, Mainline who played on the Pamnation Party Stage, and all-around winner Blue Moon Band who shared their music on the Main Stage.  These opening acts set a high standard for future performers, demonstrating they are more than capable of sharing the stage with major acts.

Situated in the heart of Westchester, the festival is also a family-friendly affair.  Attendees brought chairs and blankets to enjoy a relaxing day out.  This year, Kenny Green gave a special children’s performance at the Chili Tent.  Alongside the musical performances bounce houses, kid-friendly activities as well as food and other vendors lined the festival’s perimeter.

2024 saw Northwell Health joining as a sponsor of the festival.  In conjunction with Northwell Health, the band N.E.D. performed.  The band is comprised of gynecological oncologists, including Dr. Gizelka David-West of Northwell’s Northern Westchester and Phelps Hospitals.  Their band name is derived from the medical acronym for “no evidence of disease.”  After their set, N.E.D. gave everyone a clean bill of health and prescribed a daily dose of rock ’n’ roll for all.

The Wailers / Main Stage

With three stages, the festival offered a mixture of musical styles.  The stages and act performance times were aligned in such a way that you could experience all eighteen acts if so desired.

The Chill Tent, situated at the far end of the park, offered an open-air big top where you could sit in chairs with large fans circulating the air.  This stage hosted singer/songwriter, blues, and jazz performances featuring Jesse Terry and headliner Jill Sobule.

Better Than Ezra / Main Stage

The Pamnation Party Stage served as the place to dance till you dropped.  Talon, an all-girl band from Brooklyn and Armonk tore up the stage, while Dead Tooth from Queens added fuel to the musical fire.  Jersey City’s Widely Grown (who also hosted the after-party at Lucy’s) and The Collection (from North Carolina) closed out the stage in fine fashion.

The Main Stage featured national performing acts.  Indie rocker Margaret G laspy, with her haunting raspy vocal tones, shared songs from her 2023 release “Echo The Diamond.”  When The Wailers took to the stage, they transformed Pleasantville into Kingston.  Performing hit after hit, lead singer Mitchell Brunings led the crowd in sing-alongs throughout their set.

Grammy Award winner The Record Company followed with their straightforward rock ’n’ roll.  New Orleans-based headliner Better Than Ezra wrapped up the night delighting the audience with a surprise abridged performance of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” during their set.

A Stellar Start to the 2024 Great South Bay Music Festival

The 2024 Great South Bay Music Festival kicked off its first day with a spectacular lineup. Held at Shorefront Park in Patchogue, the festival’s opening nightset the stage for an unforgettable weekend of music. An eclectic night of music featured a blend of blues, rock, and eclectic performances,

The headliner for the night, Joe Bonamassa, delivered a powerhouse performance. Known for his virtuosic guitar skills and soulful voice, Bonamassa brought his signature blues-rock sound to the festival. He captivated fans with hits like “Twenty-Four Hour Blue” and “I Want to Shout About It.” Moreover, his set was a testament to why he remains one of the most revered guitarists in the world, as his performance was a fitting climax to an evening of exceptional music.

Stellar Supporting Acts

However, before Bonamassa took the stage, the crowd was treated to a series of impressive performances. Jim Messina, a founding member of Buffalo Springfield and Poco, brought a blend of folk, rock, and countr. His classic hits and engaging stage presence were a perfect warm-up for the night’s main act and resonated with the audience.

In like manner, Brandon “Taz” Niederauer, the teenage guitar prodigy who has been wowing audiences nationwide, delivered an electrifying performance. Youthful energy and remarkable talent on full display, Niederauer shredded through a setlist that showcased his impressive range and skill.

Additionally, local favorite Kerry Kearney Band brought their unique style of blues to the stage, with Kearney’s slide guitar work and the band’s tight, dynamic sound setting the tone for the evening. Their performance was a hit with the crowd, many of whom are long-time fans of the band.

Five Towns College Stage Highlights

Likewise, the second stage at the Great South Bay Music Festival, known as the Bandshell – Five Towns College Stage, offered a diverse lineup that added to the festival’s eclectic vibe. Chloe Halpin opened the stage with her soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics, captivating the audience with her intimate performance.

Lex Grey and The Urban Pioneers followed, bringing a mix of blues, rock, and Americana that was both raw and powerful. Grey’s commanding presence and the band’s gritty sound were a standout of the night.

MJT closed out the second stage with a high-energy set that had the crowd dancing and enjoying the music. Their blend of rock, funk, and jazz was a perfect ending to the night’s performances on the Bandshell stage.

Barbie Barker of Candy Ambulance Shares Debut Single “Unread”

Barbie Barker of Troy’s Candy Ambulance, is embarking on a new solo project with debut single, “Unread” on July 19. The single comes ahead of an EP titled C. dropping July 26. As Barbie shifts her focus musically, she explores realms of vulnerability, emotions, and authenticity.

Barbie Barker stumbled upon this entirely new terrain when she started channeling immense genuity inspired by certain events in her life that deeply affected her. During the music-making process, it became apparent that the songs wouldn’t fit Candy Ambulance’s image. So instead, Barker, whose first name is Caitlin, choosing to take on the name Barbie after her grandmother, made the decision to undertake this era independently.

Her debut single off of C., “Unread” tells the story of becoming so passionate about something to the point where it becomes all-consuming and affects more than yourself. It’s about remembering how things used to be, the transitions that took place, and the choices that need to be made. The lyrics are intimate, admitting the feelings that Barker had such a hard time bringing to light.

Candy Ambulance is my first band and I put so much of my self worth into my role there. It was my salvation, the reason I go to therapy and work really hard to be a good person. I wrote about some really intense traumas I was working through and we toured the record where I bore my soul.

Against the backdrop of simple guitar and percussion, her voice guides the instruments along with the sentiment she’s expressing. The music starts slow and progressively picks up as more truths spill out. The words truly are the main attraction, combatting the feelings of pressure that Barker sings about, while the music submits to them. Put together by Barker and Tummy Rub Records, local musicians Joe Taurone (drums), Sam Walzyck (bass), and Dan Carr (guitar and production) understood and respected her vision.

The song is the result of pushing forward while still needing to heal from deep traumas as well as the defense mechanisms put in place to cope with that life. Through the words, Barker comes to terms with the fact that are all doing life for the first time, and trying to navigate it and mend ourselves as we go.

“Unread” is just one of five heartfelt indie-rock products of Barker’s writing journey. The upcoming EP C. is full of personal songs and anyone who listens can know they’re taking part in Barker’s healing. As a body of music, C. exemplifies the value of songwriting for artists and the solace that they can find. In Barker’s case, she uses it as an outlet that is less accessible when trying to appease everyone else.

This EP is a short and (bitter)sweet account of my vulnerability in songwriting as I move through my life. The songs didn’t fit my band and it was scary to branch out and do a project of my own. I worked with the incredibly talented folks at Tummy Rub Records and the experience was effortless. We even used my scratch guitar tracks because the vibe was so comfortable. I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished together.

Additionally, to celebrate the release of her new music, Barker and the folks at Tummy Rub are holding a release show on Friday, July 19 at The Hangar on the Hudson in Troy. She will be joined by her collaborators as well as special guests toriendofstory and Canella, who also contributed to the E.P. The two bands will open for Barker with their own original music on a night full of authenticity and creative expression.

Brooklyn-Based Gooseberry Release “Cherry Blossoms” Ahead of Full-Length LP

Brooklyn-based alt-rock band Gooseberry released their brand new single, “Cherry Blossoms,” this Friday. “Cherry Blossom” is the third single from their upcoming full-length LP, All My Friends Are Cattle, which is set to release Sept. 6.

Gooseberry, formed in 2019, melds alternative rock, indie, and blues to craft their distinctive and signature sound. Comprising Asa Daniels (guitar, vocals), Evin Rossington (drums), and Will Hammond (bass), the band has racked up hundreds of thousands of streams and garnered praise from editorial stalwarts Under the Radar, Ones to Watch, and more.

Now, bigger than ever and with the most to prove, Gooseberry is gearing up to release their debut full-length album, All My Friends Are Cattle. Announced back in April, the new project is, in the words of the band, “Gooseberry’s most ambitious project yet.” From the gritty alt-rock tune “Kikiyon” to the eerie and slow-building “Dying To Meet You,” the album’s singles released to date have indicated that listeners should expect the unexpected.

The band’s new single, “Cherry Blossoms,” leans into a more stripped-down sonic direction compared to their usual wailing guitars but thematically covers familiar ground, with Daniels singing about lost love and his desires to catch up to them, no matter how much time it takes. “I saw you underneath the cherry blossoms. I forgot to call your name,” Daniels tenderly sings over the song’s hook, then ends said hook with, “And I’ve forgotten so many things—keys and dates and wedding rings—but I could never forget your face.”

“I spent months during the pandemic scanning and cataloging photos of my family dating back to the 1800s. There’s something terrifying about how much of life slips through the cracks once lived, but also something beautiful about the staying power of the few moments that remain. My grandmother’s dementia has made that more tangible for me. So this song is essentially saying, ‘I’m gonna get it wrong a whole lot, and I won’t remember much of it in the end, but I’ll never forget the face of the ones I love.’”

Gooseberry plans to release a fourth and final single, “Baby Do You?” in August.

In addition to All My Friends Are Cattle arriving this September, Gooseberry has also announced an upcoming tour with stops all around the country, including four in New York State. For the last show of the tour, Gooseberry will be sharing the stage with Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band in New Lenox, IL.

Troy Ramey Releases “Pick Up Truck” After Debuting in NYC

Fresh off the streets of New York City, newcomer Troy Ramey released his latest single, “Pick Up Truck,” on June 28.

Known for his soulful voice and emotionally driven songs, Troy Ramey celebrates life’s simple pleasures; summer drives, and the joy of music.

Originally hailing from Vermont, Ramey grew up in a household of musicians, turning to music as a way to heal after the tragic loss of his father. Since then, his music has reflected his intense passion, producing authentic, emotionally driven songs and connecting deeply with his audience.

In 2017, Ramey competed on season 12 of NBC’s The Voice, garnering immense praise from audiences and celebrity judges Alicia Keys and Celine Dion alike. After his appearance, he moved to New York City and began to write and produce his own music, including his newest single, “Pick Up Truck.” At first, the song concept was a running joke between Troy and his longtime friend and co-writer Johnny Gates, mostly about the recurring themes within the country music genre. But after his landmark performance on The Voice, Troy continued to work with the concept, developing it into one of his favorite songs he’s recorded thus far.

“But as I messed around on the guitar, the lyrics ‘when you hear my song, turn it up, sounds better in a pickup truck’ came to mind,” Ramey says about the track. “The song immediately was no longer a joke. It really became a song about one of my favorite things to do.”

After the release of his first singles from his debut LP, All I Had, the excitement for the full album only began to grow. With the full album set to release in the fall of 2024, the anticipation only grows stronger with each day. The release of “Pick Up Truck” will certainly have to do in the meantime. If the artistry and creativity behind this one single is only a preview of the full album, there is certainly a bright future ahead of Troy Ramey.
