  • Porno for Pyros Ignite the Capitol Theatre for the Horns, Thorns en Halos Farewell Tour Finale

    As the curtain falls on Porno for Pyros’ Horns, Thorns en Halos Farewell Tour, the iconic band graced the stage of the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester for one last explosive performance on March 7. Fans gathered to experience a night full of energy, memorable tunes, and a bittersweet goodbye to an era, creating a nostalgic and anticipatory atmosphere.

    The current lineup of Porno for Pyros consists of the visionary Perry Farrell, the powerhouse drummer Stephen Perkins, the talented guitarist Peter Distefano, and the legendary bassist Mike Watt. While Martyn LeNoble left the band in 1995, Watt seamlessly stepped in, contributing to the band’s unique sound until their hiatus in 1998.

    Contributing to the band’s rich musical blend were Etty Lau Ferrell, Perry’s wife, providing backing vocals, and Robin Hatch skillfully playing the keys. This dynamic ensemble left an enduring impact on audiences during their farewell tour, leaving an indelible mark in each city they graced with their performances.

    Opening the night with an electrifying energy was Tigercub, a three-piece rock band hailing from Brighton, UK. The trio, comprised of Jamie Stephen Hall, James Allix, and Jimi Wheelwright, set the stage ablaze with a riveting set that included tracks like “Swoon,” “The Dark Below,” “Control,” and “Stop Beating on My Heart.”

    As the anticipation reached its peak, Porno for Pyros took the stage to a thunderous applause. Launching into their set with classics like “Sadness,” “Meija,” and the eponymous “Porno For Pyros” from their 1993 album, the band immediately transported the audience back to the heyday of alternative rock.

    The setlist highlighted the band’s growth, including their latest song, “Agua,” and a heartfelt rendition of Iggy and the Stooges’ “I Got a Right.” Each song underscored the band’s musical skill and the significant influence they’ve had on the alternative music scene.

    As the night unfolded, Perry Farrell’s signature vocals echoed through the Capitol Theatre, creating an immersive experience for the audience. The climax of the evening came with the performance of Porno for Pyros’ two biggest hits, “Tahitian Moon” and “Pets,” bringing the audience to their feet in a wave of nostalgia and appreciation.

    The Capitol Theatre, with its rich history, served as the perfect backdrop for Porno for Pyros to bid farewell to their dedicated fans. The intimate venue allowed for a genuine connection between the band and the audience, making the farewell tour a truly memorable experience for everyone in attendance.

    As the final notes resonated through the Capitol Theatre, the crowd erupted into a chorus of cheers and applause, expressing gratitude for the decades of music and memories Porno for Pyros provided.

  • Phil Lesh & The Q Cover Just a Little More Ground: Deep Cuts & Darkstars at The Cap

    Phil Lesh, the legendary bassist of The Grateful Dead, held his annual birthday run at the historical Capitol Theatre for five nights, two of them with “The Q,” made up of Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Rob Barraco, and John Molo.

    The night began with “The Wheel” chorus and “Night of 1000 Stars.” The first set included “New Speedway Boogie” and classic “China > Rider” that featured Haynes & Herring trading guitar solos. Having two incredibly prolific guitar players with their own prominent style trading the role of lead guitar was very entertaining.

    The second set featured deeper cuts and Deadhead favorites like “Unbroken Chain” and “Dark Star.” The second set also included the funky “Shakedown Street” and ended with “Into The Mystic” – a Van Morrison cover. The band brought the show full circle by encoring with “The Wheel.”

  • Mammoth WVH Makes A Triumphant Return To Legendary Toad’s Place

    New Haven, Connecticut is mainly seen as the smaller market city that the prestigious Yale University calls home. Some might not know that steps from the university sit the legendary club known as Toad’s Place.

    The rock club has housed legendary acts such as The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel and Stevie Ray Vaughan. This time around, on Wednesday, March 5, Mammoth WVH returned to the legendary rock club. After releasing their sophomore record, Mammoth II on Aug. 4, 2024, the band is currently on their “Mammoth II Tour” supporting their newest album.

    Before Mammoth WVH graced the almost 50-year stage, guitarist Nita Strauss of the Alice Cooper band warmed up the crowd with her solo act. Joining Strauss on stage was Christopher Dean on bass, Johnny Young on guitar, Katt Scarlett on keyboards, Kasey Karlsen on lead vocals and her fiancee, Josh Villalta on the drums.

    Strauss provided amazing guitar skills throughout the opening set that dazzled the sold-out crowd. Being the in-house guitarist for the National League Football team, The Los Angeles Rams since 2020, Strauss has gained national attention for her guitar prowess and did not disappoint. 

    During Strauss’ nine-song setlist, she wowed the crowd with her signature sound which can be heard on her newest record, The Call of the Void. At one point in the show, Strauss took a minute between songs to recognize the legendary Toad’s Place. “Even out in California, we know about the legendary Toad’s Place and Pepe’s pizza!” brought a thunderous roar from the audience which was beginning to swell larger. With the band headbanging in unison, some of the Toad’s attendees joined in as the band did more than enough to warm the rainy New Haven crowd for Mammoth WVH.

    The opening riff of AC/DC’s “Night Prowler” off of 1979’s Highway to Hell blasted over the PA system like thunder strike and the house lights dimmed. The anticipation for the Mammoth WVH’s second trip to Toad’s was palpable. Even with the house lights dimmed and fans packed wall to wall like a can of sardines, the headbanging again picked up while fans held their drinks and the rock horns up. As Mammoth jumped right into “I’m Alright” off the Mammoth II, as mentioned earlier, the band played a 15-song setlist that lasted just over an hour and a half.

    Joining the ranks of Mammoth WVH is, Wolfgang Van Halen (son of the late, Eddie Van Halen) on guitar and lead vocals, Jon Jourdan on guitar, Ronnie Ficarro on bass, and Garrett Whitlock on the drums. Frank Sidoris tours as a third guitarist with the band but this time around he was on the road with Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators.

    The crowd, which was of all ages, had smiles across their face like kids on Christmas for the entire set. Mammoth WVH performed at Toad’s two years ago on the double bill “Young Guns Tour” with Dirty Honey. Like the first time, Mammoth’s performance did not disappoint.

    In between songs, Van Halen was smiling and playing along with the crowd. While he did not speak for a long time in between songs (certainly not as long as Paul Stanley of KISS), when he did though, he was laughing with his band and talking to members of the audience along the barricade.

    At one point in the show, before the start of “Distance” off of 2021’s Mammoth WVH, the rest of the band, besides Van Halen exited the stage, for Van Halen to play an acoustic version of the song. With Oasis’ “Wonderwall” jokingly being played for a brief second at the start, the bone-chillingly beautiful rendition of the tune left lasting memories on the crowd. Typically during a Mammoth WVH performance, while the music is clear, at times with all the instruments you can’t fully grasp each individually. During “Distance,” you were able to fully grasp how great of a musician Van Halen is. His voice is amazing and his guitar skills are mind-blowing. It doesn’t take long to understand why he recorded every instrument track on the first two albums.

    The energy of the entire band on stage kept the thrill alive in the audience which was entirely general admission. With Whitlock beating the daylights out of his drums, which kept each song moving forward, the rest of the band was in another gear. It’s easy to see how close of a tight-knit group they are. Each band member was able to feed off the other and bring out the best of the band.

    With only two albums under the band’s belt, they were able to play multiple tracks from each of the first two albums. If you were hoping to hear some classic Van Halen, then this show isn’t the one for you. The band does not play anything Van Halen which is a great thing. Wolfgang is an excellent songwriter and overall great musician so it’s amazing to see what he has accomplished so far.

    Mammoth WVH is one of the up-and-coming bands in rock music and the fan base is growing larger and larger every day. It’s only a matter of time until they sell out much bigger venues than Toad’s Place. There is very little to hate about this band. If you’re looking for a hungry band with excellent musicianship then this is the band for you.

    With fans pilling out onto York Street, what was once a crowded venue turned into a crowded street. The cold and wet night did not keep fans away from standing outside the side door waiting to meet the band just minutes after they walked off the stage. With Toad’s Place dubbing themselves “The place that legends play,” fans exited the venue on Tuesday night knowing that they saw another rock legend in the making.

  • WIRE Festival Returns to Knockdown Center, May 16-19

    Plunge into a techno paradise in Queens from May 16–19, when WIRE Festival makes a return to Knockdown Center. This year, the event broadens its scope, delivering three days of non-stop pulsing beats.

    On Thursday, May 16, festivities begin with evening talks in collaboration with the Resident Advisor, preparing the ground for an enjoyable weekend. Stage 1 is the Main Hall, where techno’s seminal and innovative acts perform. Meanwhile, Stage 2 is the scene of takeovers. This year, Wire has invited Berlin’s Mala Junta and Amsterdam’s Vault Sessions. These two European collectives will redefine techno in 2024.

    A staple of WIRE, the Ambient Stage returns with exclusive sets from versatile New York DJs. As night passes, the stage delivers an extraordinary sound trip through artists’ collections. On Sunday morning, the outdoor closing session at The Ruins features house-focused DJs, offering an intermission from the nonstop techno beats. The outdoor house stage is a new addition that will expand the experience.

The crew takeovers on Stage 2 carry on their tradition, pushing the boundaries with Vault Sessions and Mala Junta.

  • A Coldwave Hits Town Ballroom

    Buffalo band ‘Free Music Party’ hosted their first music festival, Coldwave, at the Town Ballroom on Saturday, March 2. The event featured local, Buffalo-native artists and musicians from surrounding areas.

    The one-day festival lineup featured a headlining performance from Free Music Party themselves. Additional performers included ProSocial, Johnny and the Man Kids, and Nefatli, among others.

    As all festivals tend to get a bit of a slow start, Coldwave was no exception to this. That didn’t stop each act from giving it their all during their 30-minute sets and the headliner during their hour-long set.

    Kevin Spears, a member of Free Music Party, said of the event, “Cold Wave is a first-year, Western New York-centered music festival hosted by Free Music Party, a Buffalo R&B and Hip Hop act. Under the guidance of Kaylen Price and Max Cambria, Free Music Party gathered some of the freshest and upcoming musical acts from the area, and even a few out-of-town musicians, under the roof of the historic Town Ballroom for a night of music, art, fashion, and community.

    The festival aims to capture the raw, unique, and utter coolness of the artistic movement emerging from Buffalo and the surrounding areas. Free Music Party, dubbed “FMP” by friends and fans alike, being heavily involved in this emerging scene from the beginning. We knew we would be the perfect hosts to be at the forefront of this ‘cold wave’.”

    It was incredible to see all of these local acts under one roof. This festival truly gave these artists a platform they might not have had otherwise. It also did wonders to spotlight the Buffalo music scene and its influence in the city.

The latest single from the group exhibits their talent and diversity greatly.

    Gangstagrass has also revealed a new 10-track album titled, The Blackest Thing On The Menu.     “Working with Gangstagrass was awesome. I had been hip to them for a few years and was really diggin’ what they were doing. Mixing bluegrass with hip hop! Quite out of the box thinking. A lot of worlds coming together. I have always been a fan of bluegrass and have worked on a few records. When we got in the studio, I thought the band was exceptionally talented. Also, I was a rapper myself in the late 80’s and early 90’s, so this scratched my classic hip hop itch with a new school twist. So, to record these amazing lyricists with a live smackin’ band… what more could you ask for!!”

  • Kamasi Washington to Play Beacon Theatre Upon Release of New Album “Fearless Movement” – Listen to “Prologue” now

    Legendary west coast jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington has announced a new album – Fearless Movement – along with a tour that kicks off on May 4 at the Beacon Theatre.

    Along with the tour announcement, Washington has released the first track from Fearless Movement, “Prologue,” alongside a mesmerizing video directed by longtime collaborator AG Rojas and choreographed by Samantha Blake Goodman.

    Kamasi Washington is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader born and raised in Los Angeles, who has released three albums, all acclaimed – The EpicHarmony of Difference, and Heaven and Earth. In 2020, Washington scored the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming, earning Emmy and GRAMMY nominations for his work.

    Washington views Fearless Movement his dance album: “It’s not literal. Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music—expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.”

    With his previous albums dealing with cosmic ideas and existential concepts, Fearless Movement focuses on the everyday, an exploration of life on earth. This change in scope is due in large part to the birth of Washington’s first child a few years ago. A dance album as an embodied form of expression signals a shift in focus for Washington.

    “Being a father means the horizon of your life all of a sudden shows up. My mortality became more apparent to me, but also my immortality—realizing that my daughter is going to live on and see things that I’m never going to see. I had to become comfortable with this, and that affected the music that I was making.”

    The album also features Washington’s daughter, who wrote the melody to “Asha The First” during some of her first experimentations on the piano, as well as a host of collaborators. Among them, André 3000 appears on flute, George Clinton lends his voice, as do BJ The Chicago Kid, Inglewood rapper D-Smoke and Taj and Ras Austin of Coast Contra, the twin sons of West Coast legend Ras Kass. Washington has also enlisted lifelong friends and collaborators Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Patrice Quinn, Brandon  Coleman, DJ Battlecat and more.

    Fearless Movement also features “The Garden Path,” a song Washington performed for the first time ever, making his late-night television debut, on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

    Washington has announced an extensive North American tour kicking off May 4 at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre with dates in Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival, which he will co-curate with Herbie Hancock for the second year in a row, on June 16.

  • Hearing Aide: Hilltop release new EP “Getting There Together”

    Albany based jam band Hilltop recently released their brand new EP, Getting There Together on February 16. This follows the 2022 release of Live Rips, and is their latest studio output since “Prophecy” – a stand alone single from July of 2022.

    The quartet is made up of brothers Reid and Stephen Perry on drums and percussion, along with Aris Nieuwkerk and David Klang on guitar and bass respectively. 

    Getting There Together is mixed bag of rock, funk, jam and country influences. The band defines Getting There Together as “a collection of 4 songs from our catalog that outline the importance of living in the moment and cooperating.”

    The EP begins with “Beautiful”, a rock and jam inspired song introduced by its catchy unison guitar and bass riff. The song tackles lyrical themes of living in the present, stating “our future concerns and past regrets will all fade away.” It eventually transitions into spacey like ambience, which allows Aris the space to build a unique solo before returning back to the main unison riff to end the song. During their live performances, Hilltop is known for extending these sections, allowing the spontaneity of improvisation to lead the direction of the song. 

    “Sunshine” starts with an intro reminiscent of Pink Floyd, a quiet soundscape that slowly builds and crescendos into a funk-rock inspired groove. The bass and drums are locked in and really drive the feel of the song. The chemistry between the two are apparent on this recording. Hilltop’s use of vocal harmonies on the chorus add an additional layer of depth and power to their message. Sunshine contains a short, overdriven guitar solo that leads to a final chorus with the refrain “we’ll make our own sunshine today”, continuing with this trend of optimism and positivity in their lyrics. 

    The third song off the EP, “Something New,” contains beautiful guitar harmonies layered by Aris. These first three tracks are accredited to songwriting duo Aris and Reid.

    “Moonshine”, the final song on the EP, is heavily inspired by traditional country and bluegrass. Walking bass, a chugging train beat, and country guitar picking all meld to create the only David Klang (bass) original released on Getting There Together. David is also Hilltop’s Mastering Engineer for the entirety of the EP.

  • Lola Vista Shines As One Of The Best Artist and Composer From London

    Lola Vista, a singer and composer who has been living in New York for almost 20 years, has been crafting a sound that transcends boundaries and resonates with genuine openness right to the heart of New Yorkers.

    Persistent and determination are two words fans could use to describe the London-based artist. Lola Vista has been playing and creating music for as long as she can remember. Drawing influences from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan and Tracy Chapman, Lola’s journey as a musician began when she started playing the piano, recorder and saxophone and even writing her own songs at at a young age as she  quickly developed a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling through music.

    Desperate to learn about the music business, Lola spent a few years working in the UK music industry for large and indie companies after earning a degree in social and political science from Cambridge University. After that, the singer relocated to New York, where she rose to prominence as a social, political, and cultural writer, commentator, and broadcaster. She used her writing and voice to offer sharp insights on a variety of topics, including politics, race, and the black experience. 

    She has been an advocate for the ability of the arts as a catalyst not only for self-expression but for social change.“I believe in the power of expression and in the power of using one’s voice and the gift of music, in order to make this world a better place”.

    In her latest single “Get Up and Dance (Now)” the artist shared how she was inspired by 90s house music, acid jazz, funk and great vibes. “It’s a tribute to my musical influences as a kid of the 90’s and – more importantly – a celebration of life…I wanted to create a song that would make people happy and energized, and that would remind them of the joy of dancing and having a good time.” Lola believes in acknowledging issues and feelings and trying to find a solution which is where she got the inspiration from her single. “Essentially, “Get Up and Dance (Now)” is my solution to stress!”, the artist shared.

    Lola’s music is characterized by surreal melodies and strong voices that connect with listeners profoundly. Her songs are both melancholic and hopeful, with a depth and emotional resonance that captivates the listener, he continues to be a dynamic artist who is constantly pushing the envelope and finding new methods to express herself via music that are true to her broad taste in music and her passion for trying new things. In 2022 she released a single titled “Down Time” which she wrote in light of some very stressful times she was going through personally as well as conversations she had been having with her friends about post-pandemic life. The singer shared how people were still “stressed out” and the general sentiment at the time was “we can’t go on like this”. 

    In celebration of her single release, Lola shared that her and Joey, the producer and keyboardist Joeydkeyz who produced “Get Up and Dance (Now)” are working on more music together and there will be some good stuff coming soon.   • NYC Duo The Lemon Twigs Release Latest Album “A Dream Is All We Know” Featuring Sean Lennon

    NYC indie-rock duo The Lemon Twigs released their latest album titled A Dream Is All We Know. The LP sees a wonderful collaboration with Sean Ono Lennon, son of Beatles legend John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

    The Lemon Twigs hail from NYC/Long Island area. The duo tours with two other band members that cover various instruments while on the road. The group draws inspiration from golden age classic rock, and modern indie rock music and they do a splendid job of merging both styles into something many can turn on to.

    The Lemon Twigs new LP was mixed and mastered by the duo themselves, brothers Brian and Michael. Sean Ono Lennon recorded and co-produced the track, “In the Eyes of a Girl” while at his Upstate New York recording studio.

    The album is hugely reminiscent of 60s and 70s classic rock like the Beatles, Beach Boys, Grateful Dead and others. It is very fitting that Sean Lennon collaborated on this album to homage the music his father birthed. The album has a vintage feel, and a summer-of-love vibe undoubtedly.
