African Music Festival ‘Madaraka Festival’ to Make Stop at Irving Plaza in June

One Vibe Media has announced the cherished Madaraka Festival, headlined by Sauti Sol in 2023, will make a return to America in 2024, with shows in 13 cities, including a stop at Irving Plaza on June 1.

The concert line up will include internationally acclaimed musicians such as Nyashinski, Eddy Kenzo, Naomi Achu, Dynamq, and Simon Javan Okelo and many surprise special guests.

The event’s headliner Nyashinski, is one of the most celebrated artists in East Africa and a co-founding member of the hip-hop trio Kleptomaniax before successfully launching his solo career during the 2010s. Eddy Kenzo, is a GRAMMY-nominated Ugandan singer and music executive whose touching albums like Sitya Loss and performances helped lead him to a 2023 GRAMMY Award Nomination for Global Music Performance. Naomi Achu is a Cameroonian singer, rapper, and songwriter. She is best known for “Alhadji, ” which was played in the eighth season of Big Brother Africa. Savara Delvin Mudigi, commonly known as Savara, is a Kenyan singer, drummer, and co-founder, vocalist, and producer of the Sauti Sol band.

The Madaraka Festival started in Washington State in 2014. Over the past decade it has become one of the state’s largest African music festivals. In 2023, the festival exceeded expectations by reaching over 25,000 people physically and 30 million virtually across six metropolitan cities in the US.

Representatives say the goal for this year’s show is to reach 150,000 people in person across the states and 50 million digitally.

In addition to a spectacular list of performances, One Vibe Media is dedicated to giving part of the proceeds from the Madaraka Festival 2024 to One Vibe Africa who through their work are supporting community-led change and impacting over 3.5 million people in the United States and Africa.

Sublime To Headline Levitate Music Festival This Summer

The newly reformed Sublime will headline the eleventh annual Levitate Music & Arts Festival in Marshfield, MA this summer. The festival is scheduled to take place from July 5th through July 7th at the Marshfield Fairgrounds. Joining Sublime at the top of the festival bill is Lake Street Dive, Mt. Joy, Tash Sultana and Dirty Heads, with a wide range of other popular artists filling out the rest of he weekend.

Upon receiving an inside tip that Sublime, the 90s surf-punk icons that defined a generation were rumored to reunite, Levitate organizers moved quickly to arrange that Sublime would take the stage for their first and only live Northeast performance at Levitate Music & Arts Festival. The band features original members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson with Jakob Nowell, the son of late founding member Bradley Nowell, assuming front man duties. “Playing our music is the closest thing possible to playing with my old buddy Brad,” noted Wilson recently.

In addition to this very special headlining act, the lineup also includes powerhouse female fronted acts Lake Street Dive and Tash Sultana on Saturday, indie rockers Mt. Joy on Friday, and a star studded dynamic lineup ranging from favorites Dirty Heads to hometown heroes The Elovaters. The virtuosic prowess of performers like Grace Bowers and Cory Wong will also be on full display this weekend. And the authentic Americana of Charley Crockett along with rising starts like Karina Rykman only adds to the incredible and diverse talent at this year’s festival.

Along with the world-class musical talent, Levitate will host an eclectic, eco-driven and family friendly event with a blend of artisan vendors, dozens of local food trucks, and wide ranging experiences from live art installations to kids activities including the return of the kids zone run by Levitate Camp Counselors which encourage creativity and a shared love of the outdoors with the next generation – a value at the very core of Levitate’s mission.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue to play Pier 17 Rooftop with Big Boi in June

The high octane of Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will take center stage this summer, for a run that begins in June, with a stop at The Rooftop at Pier 17 along the way. Joining Trombone Shorty this summer is the legendary Big Boi from Outkast.

Trombone Shorty recently teamed up with his childhood friend Sammy Cyrus for a special project named Saint Brass. Ahead of Mardi Gras festivities, the duo has dropped “Mardi Gras Morning,” an irresistibly joyful track that captures the vibrant spirit of New Orleans.

On February 16, just three days after Mardi Gras, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will embark on the first-ever Shorty Gras tour, bringing their high-energy New Orleans party to the East Coast for a special 3-week run of performances. They’ll be joined by another New Orleans staple, The Soul Rebels. Shorty Gras has become a beloved New Orleans tradition since its inaugural year in 2020, a featured event as part of the Krewe de Freret Parade in the lead-up to Mardi Gras (the Krewe de Freret Parade is scheduled for February 3, 2024).

Trombone Shorty leads the parade on his own signature float, and concludes with the Shorty Gras ball at Mardi Gras World, featuring a who’s who of musical guests. Previous performers include Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, Flo Rida, Big Freedia, Tank and the Bangas, Rebirth Brass Band. This year, Shorty will bring this distinctly New Orleans Mardi Gras party on the road for the first time.

It will be another busy year for the New Orleans ambassador and road warrior. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue just announced that their beloved Treme Threauxdown concert will return for its eighth year, taking place at New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre on Saturday, April 27 during the first weekend of the Jazz and Heritage Festival. The list of guest stars will be revealed soon, but past shows have seen everyone from Jon Batiste, Mavis Staples, Allen Toussaint, and Dr. John to Eric Church, Usher, Joan Jett, and Gary Clark, Jr., and have also included surprise appearances by artists from Nick Jonas to Dierks Bentley to Steve Miller to Wyclef Jean.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue just returned from a five-day cultural exchange trip to Cuba, which took place from January 11-15. It marked the third edition of the “Getting Funky in Havana” festival, celebrating the New Orleans – Cuba connection through music. The highlight was a mega concert on January 13 at Club 500, where Trombone Shorty, Orleans Avenue, and Cuban legends Los Van Van and Wampi drew a record-breaking crowd of over 15,000 people, the largest in Cuba in the last four years.

Additionally, Trombone Shorty cohosted the largest U.S-Cuba jam session at Havana’s Fabrica de Arte Cubano, featuring over 30 artists from both countries. A centerpiece of the event was the collaboration with Guillermo Tomas Music Conservatory, with Trombone Shorty’s Foundation donating instruments to the school through a partnership with Horns to Havana.

Stevie Nicks Adds Albany Date to 2024 Tour

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stevie Nicks has expanded her wildly successful 2023 tour with 13 additional performances added. The Live In Concert tour will make stops in New York State on Feb. 14 at the UBS Arena and June 12 at MVP Arena.

General on-sale for the additional dates will begin on Friday, February 9 at 10 a.m. local time at LiveNation.com.

Dead & Company Finalize Sphere Residency Dates

Dead & Company have released the final dates for their 18-show residency at Sphere in Las Vegas and tickets will be on sale to the general public beginning Friday, February 9. There is also an artist pre-registration that is currently underway and can be accessed here. These shows will take place over six weekends during May and June and will utilize Sphere’s next-generation technologies, including the world’s highest resolution LED display that wraps up, over, and around the audience creating a fully immersive visual environment.

A Moving Musical Afternoon with the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra

On Sunday, January 28, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, together with the combined choirs of the Southern Tier Singers’ Collective and the Binghamton University Chamber Singers, mounted a moving musical performance of Mozart’s Requiem at the Broome County Forum Theatre. It was a rare treat to hear this great work of the choral repertoire, especially when performed with such great mastery.

The orchestra and choir were joined by four up-and-coming young soloists from the Curtis Institute of Music: soprano Juliette Tacchino, mezzo-soprano Katie Trigg, tenor Jackson Allen, and bass Evan Gray. The quartet of singers, hailing from as far away as France and New Zealand, powerfully conveyed the profound human longing in Mozart’s vocal writing. Tacchino’s silvery sound blended beautifully with Trigg’s rich, plummy tones, and all four soloists distinguished themselves by their highly expressive musicality.

Maestro Daniel Hege led a tight, seamless ensemble through the wildly contrasting emotions of the Requiem; as usual with this group, the woodwinds were particularly strong. Hege’s tempos seemed to grow organically from one movement to the next, giving the work a living, breathing pulse and a satisfying sense of wholeness.

But it was the chorus that was the true star of the show. Prepared by William Culverhouse, the combined choirs infused Mozart’s majestic work with energy, elegance, and intimacy. Culverhouse’s singers showed themselves capable of rigorous counterpoint and stunning pianissimi, their phrasing crisply commanding and meltingly lyrical by turns. Mozart’s demands on the chorus are almost soloistic, and this chorus was fully up to the challenge, cycling through his extremes of volume, speed, and emotion with virtuosity and aplomb.

Over 1100 concertgoers, including many younger music lovers, came out on a snowy midwinter day to hear Sunday’s stunning performance, demonstrating their appreciation with a standing ovation and several curtain calls. The Philharmonic’s foray into the great repertoire of choral music was a great success, one that bears repeating!

LaMP Spring Tour Swings through Northeast, Mid Atlantic and Southeast

LaMP, featuring Russ Lawton, Scott Metzger and Ray Paczkowski has announced a 10-date Spring tour across the East Coast with stops in the Northeast, Mid Atlantic and Southeast.

Kicking off in April, the run is in addition to two previously announced March shows in Denver and Boulder.

LaMP formed in 2018 for a handful of one-off performances in Vermont. The chemistry between the three was immediate, resulting in a heavy groove, soul jazz sound with plenty of deep funk and technical prowess to spare. During the pandemic, they’d record and release their first studio album. It wasn’t until 2023, however, that the organ/guitar/drums trio found time in their busy schedules to focus energy on LaMP as a priority.

The trio’s musical commitments are far reaching: Metzger is an in-demand studio guitarist and member of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, while Lawton and Paczkowski have their own duo Soule Monde and are original members of the Trey Anastasio Band. With both live and studio albums in the works and 12 shows planned for the Spring, LaMP five years from their inception is clearly just getting started.

We hit the Northeast pretty hard last Fall and the response was just incredible, lots of big crowds and sold out shows. So we decided that in the Spring it would be fun to play more around those same parts, but to instead find cool rooms outside of the big cities and bring the music to the people in spots a little more off the beaten path.

JazzBuffalo Unveils Winners of 9th Annual Readers Poll

JazzBuffalo has revealed the results of its 9th Annual Readers Poll. More than 1700 ballots were submitted across 36 categories, giving Western New York’s jazz enthusiasts, audiences, and readers a chance to show support for their favorite jazz artists, groups and performances.

My Cousin Toné earned Jazz Large Ensemble of the Year, known for hosting the immensely popular JazzMonday at Tappo Rooftop Patio, as well as an appearance at the Northwest Jazz Festival in Lewiston. The group’s standout performance featured Carolyn Lansom and claimed the top spot for the 2023 Most Memorable Jazz Performance of the Year, surpassing last year’s winner, The Ed Croft Trio: A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Lázara Martinez was recognized as the Jazz Crusader of the Year, for their dedication to championing jazz at Pausa Art House, and for invaluable contributions to the vibrant jazz community in Buffalo.
