On Saturday, May 4, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra presented “Other Worlds,” its grand finale of the 2023-2024 season. Maestro Daniel Hege led the orchestra in an evening of music from the superhero, fantasy, and sci-fi genres, enlivening a program of beloved classics with crisp, expressive musicianship and bringing delight to a large, all-ages audience.
The concert was dedicated to first responders. Members of local police, fire, and rescue departments received complimentary tickets, and at the start of the concert the entire audience rose to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” along with the orchestra in honor of these true superheroes of the community.

The musicians of the Philharmonic demonstrated tight, committed ensemble playing in an uplifting program of genre favorites, including themes from Black Panther, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and many more. The orchestra delivered a big, enveloping sound, highlighted by showy contributions from Principal Trumpet Frank Campos. Outstanding solos were also provided throughout the program by Assistant Principal Cellist Michael Newman. And the percussion section was elevated not only by the spectacular playing of Principal Percussionist Sam Lazzara, but also by the introduction of a new bass drum expressly designed for the Philharmonic by ErgoSonic Percussion. Lazzara and ErgoSonic President Ken Turner demonstrated this beautifully resonant instrument to the audience before the start of the show.
Maestro Hege was an engaging presence throughout, providing a feeling of warmth and welcome to the audience as he introduced each piece. Hege called the Binghamton Philharmonic “a true gem of the community,” and it was clear from the standing ovation and many curtain calls the orchestra received that the audience agreed. In all, “Other Worlds” was a bright and spirited finale to an invigorating season.
Vocal powerhouse Teddy Swims has announced additional dates on his I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy North American tour, with shows announced for Syracuse and Albany this fall.
The tour dates are paired with the deluxe edition of Swims’ acclaimed debut album, releasing on April 26, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1.5).
Teddy started to gain notoriety with a series of covers starting in 2019, including Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” and Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One,” leading to his signing to Warner Records in 2020. He honed his voice and songwriting across EPs Unlearning [2021], Tough Love [2022], and Sleep Is Exhausting [2022]. He showcased his sky-high range by collaborating with artists such as Maren Morris, Meghan Trainor, X Ambassadors, ILLENIUM, Tiësto, Armin Van Buuren, and Matoma.

Woodsist Festival has announced this year’s musical lineup and its return to Arrowood Farms in Upstate New York. It will take place from September 21- 22 with this year’s headliners include Yo La Tengo, Real Estate and Jessica Pratt.
There will also be performances scheduled for Woods, Hailu Mergia, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Jeff Parker, Etran de L’air, The Messthetics, 75 Dollar Bill Big Band and more. As in previous years, the lineup has been curated by Jeremy Earl of Woods.
Arrowood Farms is a sustainably-minded farm, brewery and distillery located in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley in Accord, NY. It will host the performers on two alternating stages throughout the weekend and feature food from local Hudson Valley-based vendors and craft beer brewed directly on site. Tickets are now on sale and available at the festival website.
The inaugural Woodsist Festival took place in Brooklyn in 2009 with Thee Oh Sees headlining alongside a number of acts including Beach Fossils, Real Estate, and Kurt Vile. Since then, the festival has been presented in various locations including Big Sur, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Pioneertown, CA. Woodsist Festival found its home at Arrowood Farms in 2019, presented in partnership with Ground Control Touring and premiere Hudson Valley concert promoters Impact Concerts, and has returned annually since 2021.
Porter Robinson has announced a five-continent world tour including stops in more than 30 North American cities, Europe, and Asia – including Forest Hills Stadium in Queens – in support of his highly-anticipated third studio album SMILE! 😀, releasing on July 26.

This weekend in Albany, Ophelia’s on Broadway welcomes Ryan Dempsey and Frends for two musical nights of jam-packed jam band members. The Twiddle keyboardist will be leading a cavalcade of stars on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20.
On April 19, Dempsey welcomes Mike Gantzer from Aqueous, Vinnie Amico of moe., Joshua West of Annie in the Water, Billy Stark on Bass, as well as a few surprise guests.

As Phish prepares for four sold-out shows at the new Sphere in Las Vegas next week, they’ve released the first glimpse of their new upcoming album. “Evolve” is the title track of the new studio production which is set to come out July 12 on JEMP Records. This comes right before a summer tour that starts one week later in Mansfield, MA and includes three nights at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in August.
Evolve will be the first new studio album for Phish in more than four years and marks the band’s 16th one overall. The title track, which can be heard below, has been found on set lists as far back as 2021 so it’s certainly not a new number and one the band has crafted to their liking by now.
This summer will also see Phish play at Uncasville, CT’s Mohegan Sun Arena (July 23-24), East Troy, WI’s Alpine Valley Music Theatre (July 26-28), St. Louis, MO’s Chaifetz Arena (July 30-31), Noblesville, IN’s Ruoff Music Center (August 2-4), and Grand Rapids, MI’s Van Andel Arena (August 6-7).

This all leads up to three shows at the historic Bethel Woods Center for the Arts from August 9-11. It will be the band’s first three-show run at Bethel following their initial four-night stay in 2011 and two shows in 2022. This summer will see also Phish hosting Mondegreen, a four-day festival set for August 15-18 at The Woodlands in Dover, DE. It will be the band’s 11th self-produced festival and the first one in nine years. On Saturday, April 6, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra closed its 2023-2024 Symphonic Series with “Roman Holiday,” a thrilling program of music both from and about the sunny lands of the Mediterranean.

The evening opened with “Fandangos,” a piece by Cornell University-based composer Roberto Sierra that evoked Spanish dance forms of the eighteenth century, replete with bold, Andalusian-style trumpets and assertive percussion. Aided by the committed conducting of Maestro Daniel Hege, Sierra took the orchestra to extremes of speed, volume, and emotional impact. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s dazzling showpiece “Capriccio Italien” followed, with a martial chorus of brass and a seductive medley of folk tunes, played by the orchestra with shimmering lyricism.
The high point of the “Roman Holiday” concert, though, was Ottorino Respighi’s stunning “Pines of Rome,” an orchestral experience of the Eternal City and its iconic pine trees.
The Philharmonic was expanded to its largest size for this piece, with 75 musicians onstage and six more in the theater boxes overlooking the audience – trumpets and trombones that Respighi meant to invoke Roman legions marching on the Appian Way. As always with this ensemble, the woodwinds shone, with stand-out solos from flutist Karen Bogardus, clarinetist Paul Wongjin Cho, oboist John Lathwell, and bassoonist Melissa Kritzer; hornist Alex Shuhan and trumpeter Frank Campos also provided dazzling moments.

Maestro Hege led the orchestra with his trademark elegance and expressiveness, infusing Respighi’s astonishing work with lyrically shaped phrases and passionate crescendos that stirred the soul.
A standing ovation and many bows for Hege and the orchestra were proof of the power of this music and of the great skill of the Binghamton Philharmonic.
Grammy-Winning Artists BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet will celebrate a half century of cajun music as they bring the bayou to Saratoga Springs’ Universal Preservation Hall on Thursday, April 18.
BeauSoleil is known to bring audiences to their feet, being born from the rich Acadian ancestry of members, created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals, offering inspiring two-stepping, waltzing, and standing ovations wherever they go.
BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet can be credited with taking Cajun music from its regional roots in Louisiana to popularity worldwide. Their most recent album, and the 25th in their 45-year career, was titled From Bamako to Carencro, alluding to the cultural and migratory connection between Bamako, in Mali, West Africa, and Louisiana (symbolized in name by the Lafayette, LA suburb of Carencro), a connection that draws a sonic bloodline back to BeauSoleil’s roots.
Since becoming the first Cajun band to win a Grammy with L’amour Ou La Folie (their Traditional Folk Album–1998) and then a second Grammy in 2010, “Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival,” BeauSoleil has garnered many accolades, including 12 Grammy nominations.
Universal Preservation Hall hosts the multiple Grammy Award-winning group’s 50th anniversary tour 7:30 p.m. in the Great Hall Thursday, April 18 as part of the Passport Series-Music Haven at Proctors Collaborative.
Local Saratoga-based southern restaurant Hatties will serve free jambalaya samples alongside the bar in UPH’s lobby directly before the show for ticket holders.

Goose has announced more headlining 2024 show dates which includes two nights at SPAC. The newly announced run will begin in NJ at Holmdel’s PNC Bank Arts Center on September 1 and the following week will see the band returning to SPAC for two shows on September 6 and 7. This summer and fall will be the first extensive touring Goose will be doing with their new drummer Cotter Ellis.
The new slate of fall shows will see Goose hit the Midwest and then the West Coast, with the tour concluding on September 28 in Stanford, CA at Frost Amphitheater. This comes after an extensive June schedule of shows that includes stops in St. Louis, Atlanta, and New York City before concluding with a hometown show at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, CT.
