  • Kaufman Music Center Hosts 25th Annual New York Guitar Festival

Kaufman Music Center announced it is hosting the 25th annual New York Guitar Festival – held at KMC’s esteemed venue, Merkin Hall, from June 14-15th, 2024. The festival is co-presented by Kaufman Music Center, World Music Institute, New York Guitar Festival, and New Sounds Live.

    New York Guitar Festival

Exploring virtually every aspect of the guitar’s personality since 1999, the New York Guitar Festival has presented many of the world’s most influential guitarists at iconic NYC venues large and small. From multi-GRAMMY-winners to emerging artists, the performers include masters of the classical repertoire, blues, jazz, pop, indie, folk, and Americana.

The Kaufman Music Center (KMC) presents music programs for students, performers, and audiences alike with its intimate performance space Merkin Hall and the Special Music School – among other things. It is the premier destination for learning and listening to music in New York City. The center is constantly cultivating and nurturing new generations of artists, inspiring the young and old to learn instruments and turn their passion for music into a career.

Merkin Hall – the Center’s intimate performance venue – provides access to today’s most compelling artists, competitions, and workshops. Other programs, like Artist-in-Residence, give performers resources to develop groundbreaking protects and educational opportunities to mentor and inspire the Special Music School students; New York’s only K-12 public school prioritizing musically-focused education without financial barriers.

    Kaufman Music Center

The festival, hosted by WNYC’s John Schaefer, includes a wide range of performances across the two days from artists like Marc Ribot & Leyla McCalla, Yasmin Williams, Neel Murgai, Kunal Prakash, Medicine Singers, Lee Ranaldo, Yonatan Gat, Maalem Hassan BenJaafar, Mamady Kouyaté and additional special guests.

    Friday, June 14 Programming

The New York Guitar Festival’s 25th Anniversary begins with a typically eclectic event. The unlikely duo of Marc Ribot, the New York guitarist, and Leyla McCalla, the New Orleans cellist and banjo player perform starting at 8 p.m. Ribot is known for his work with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, his avant-noise trio Ceramic Dog, and much more; McCalla writes songs that draw on the African-American string band tradition, Cajun music, and her Haitian heritage. Ribot was also a student of the Haitian classical guitarist/composer Frantz Casseus, and the two share a strong genre-agnostic streak.

Joining them is Yasmin Williams, who has extended the “tapping” technique when she approaches the guitar -occasionally adding tap shoes and kalimba to the sound and becoming a literal one-woman band. Also performing is sitarist Neel Murgai, co-director of the globally-inspired Brooklyn Raga Massive – accompanied by Jeff The Brotherhood guitarist Kunal Prakash.

    Saturday, June 15 Programming

Medicine Singers is the name of an ongoing collaboration between Yonatan Gat, the virtuosic Israeli-born, New York-based guitarist, and the Eastern Medicine Singers – an Eastern Algonquin powwow group from Rhode Island. Now joined by the legendary Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, they combine ancient trance and spirituality with modern psychedelia and use the similarities – and differences – between the steady pulse of Indigenous American drumming and rock.

Maalem Hassan BenJaafar is the lead singer and Artistic Director of Innov Gnawa – teaching the other members of the band while performing across the world. In November 2017, Maalem Hassan and Innov Gnawa were nominated for a GRAMMY in the Dance/Electronic category. Finally, The Mandingo Ambassadors was founded in New York City by griot-guitarist Mamady Kouyaté, an enriched arranger, band leader, accompanist, and soloist, in 2005. Since 2008 the group has been in residence at Barbes, performing every Wednesday night. In addition, they have performed at many clubs, events, and festivals including Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Celebrate Brooklyn, and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas.

    Tickets are on sale now.

Beau Fleuve Music & Arts strives to celebrate all music, arts, and culture. In 2017, they launched the annual celebration to drive their purpose and mission by standing on the pillars of diversity to build bridges in the community through the arts. Beau Fleuve has been attracting artists and visitors from across the region and abroad throughout New York State, Southern Ontario, and the Northeast to enjoy the festivities.

“I’m always extremely grateful for what we are able to cultivate each year and provide spaces for all to enjoy,” said Lindsey Taylor, Founder. The festival has multiple stages from regional, national and international musical acts, art installations & exhibitions, interactive activation spaces, a family fun zone, live podcast, Canna Lounge, Pullup & Pitch contest, street art, fashion, sports culture, film, backyard games, food trucks, beer & wine garden,  mind + body + soul health & wellness, vendors village and more.

  • Stella Blue’s Band Returns to Free Dead in the Park This May

Stella Blue’s Band is excited to announce the fifth annual Free Dead in the Park concert to benefit Riverkeeper, presented by The Capitol Theatre and RYTHM Cannabis, at the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park in New York City on Tuesday, May 14.

Free Dead in the Park, Riverkeeper

Free Dead in the Park began in 2018 when Stella Blue’s Band first played in the bandshell to commemorate the 50 anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s epic free concert with Jefferson Airplane and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. In the years following, the show has benefitted Riverkeeper and its mission to protect, clean up, and advocate for the Hudson River and surrounding ecosystems.

“Free Dead in the Park is our family reunion and it gets better every year,” said Steve Liesman, the band’s rhythm guitar player, a member of Riverkeeper’s board, and the senior economics reporter for CNBC. “It’s an honor to follow in the footsteps of the Dead in beautiful Central Park while helping support the vital cause of cleaning up the Hudson River.” An exclusive commemorative T-shirt featuring a photo of Bob Weir onstage taken by photographer Jay Blakesberg will be given to everyone who becomes a Riverkeeper member at the event.

Stella Blue’s Band, founded in 2009, recreates the experience of being at a Grateful Dead show – lighting up the tri-state area for more than a decade with its six-piece line-up, including two drummers, strong, soulful vocals, and high-energy performances.

“We’re thrilled to be back supporting Free Dead in the Park and Riverkeeper and bringing together the power of good music and collective action for the environment in the heart of New York City,” said Peter Shapiro, owner of The Capitol Theatre

Riverkeeper protects and restores the Hudson River, and safeguards drinking water supplies through community partnerships, science, and law. They improve water quality, restore habitat for an abundance of life, and address the impact of climate change on waterways. Founded in 1966 as the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association, Riverkeeper became the model for more than 320 Waterkeeper organizations and established globally recognized standards for waterway and watershed protection.

“Listen to the river sing sweet songs with the Stella Blue’s Band at one of Riverkeeper’s most beloved events, Free Dead in the Park,” said Tracy Brown, President of Riverkeeper. “Join environmentalists and music enthusiasts in celebrating and supporting the preservation of the Hudson River.”

  • Dynamic Folk Trio Jamcrackers Coming to The Eighth Step at Proctors

The Eighth Step at Proctors is presenting the dynamic folk group Jamcrackers at 7:30 pm on Saturday, March 23.

    Jamcrackers

Jamcrackers is Adirondack folksingers Dan Berggren, Peggy Lynn, and Dan Duggan on harmony vocals, guitar, and virtuoso hammered dulcimer. Performing a mix of original and traditional songs and tunes, the uber-talented trio brings strong songs, tight harmonies, and lively tunes to the stage through Peggy and “the Dans’ ” energy and warm voices.

National hammered dulcimer champion Dan Duggan is known for his wizardry on the instrument and his flat-picking guitar licks. Peggy Lynn sings in her bluesy alto about strong women and life in the North Country, and Dan Berggren’s songs and stories give voice to the spirit of hard-working folks and inspire care of our beautiful planet.

Caffé Lena states: “They sing of nature, strong women, healthy communities and peace, backing their rich vocal  blend with world-class hammered dulcimer, banjo, and guitar,” while the Adirondack Museum praises their “Beautifully crafted songs, powerful vocals, and tight arrangements.” They at once bring us back to the days of mountain men, strong mountain women, settlers, and Gilded Age visitors, and take us forward to tomorrow’s issues shaping the future of our beloved mountains and beyond. The trio’s original and traditional music echoes the timeless beauty of the still-remote, forever wild pine and lake-studded wilderness.

Tickets are $27 advance / $29 day of show / $45 Gold Circle (Priority Seating and 6:30 Meet & Greet onstage), available through The Eighth Tix/Info Line at (518) 434-1703 (Visa/MC/Disc/AmEx), online, through Proctors Box Office (518) 346-6204.
