  • 2024 Eddies Music Awards Nominations Announced

    The 2024 Eddies Music Award nominees have been announced, featuring a total of 218 nominations in 34 categories. The annual ceremony is at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 21 on the MainStage at Proctors, in partnership with WEXT and WEQX.

    NYS Music is proudly nominated for Arts Publication of the Year, with Jarron Childs nominated for Photographer of the Year and Pete Mason nominated for Music Journalist of the Year. The total number of nominations since the Eddies Music Awards was founded in 2019 is 959. All nominees and award recipients are determined by members of the local music community.

    “The Eddies are all about the incredible local talent. Decision-making during nominations and voting is all made by active members of the music community–with increased participation every year,” said founder and co-producer Jim Murphy.

    The Albany-based indie rock quartet E.R.I.E. leads all artists with four nominations. These include Album of the Year for Suburban Mayhem, Record of the Year for “World is on Fire” featuring Sydney Worthley, Rock/Pop Artist of the Year, and the band’s TJ Foster for Songwriter of the Year. They were a featured performer at the 2023 Eddies Music Awards celebration. Alt/Indie band Architrave and solo artists Shannon Roy and Angelina Valente each received three nominations.

    In addition to finalists in the categories below, several Merit Award recipients will be announced for music-related activities outside of traditional award categories. A new category the 2024 Eddies is the Seasonal Outdoor Venue/Concert Series. “We’ve awarded venues in the past but there was feedback that too many venues were overlooked when we reviewed the scene regionwide,” said co-producer, Kelly Auricchio. “Judges and members of our advisory council gravitated towards rotating the category focus from year to year, the first being seasonal concerts series at community outdoor venues.”

    This is one of two annual Eddies Music Awards ceremonies. The late Jackie Alper, the late Nick Brignola, George Guarino, David Alan Miller, the late Pauline Oliveros, Margie Rosenkranz, Billy Waring, and Don Wilcock will be inducted into the Capital Region Thomas Edison Music Hall of Fame on Monday, March 25 at Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs.

  • Ithaca Reggae Fest Returns to Stewart Park in June

    The sixth annual Ithaca Reggae Fest returns to Stewart Park from June 21-22. With a wide range of activities and music, the festival is dedicated to the protection of Cayuga Lake through a conscious celebration of Ithaca’s legendary reggae community and its history.

    Kicking off the weekend this year is the Puerto Rican king of smooth dub beats Pachyman, with his live band. There will also be an opening set from Ithaca Reggae Fest original team member DJ ha-MEEN spinning some lively tunes to get things started at the free Friday Welcome Party. Spin magazine cites Pachyman as “a breezy, fun-loving, and freedom-seeking artist… His works are a well sonically seasoned mix, in which his Puerto Rican roots shine bright.”

    The big day Saturday, June 22 begins with setting the intention with an interactive yoga workshop led by the Yoga Farm before celebrating Cayuga Lake with a cultural celebration led by the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫʼ. The music gets going on Saturday with Ithaca’s own Ghanian-led roots reggae favorites, Mosaic Foundation, followed by the lively and big sound of Syracuse’s own, Root Shock. As the sun goes down, Jamaica’s living legend and first female dancehall DJ & writer/singer of the top sampled reggae song of all time Sister Nancy performs.

    Also, festival co-founder Kevin Kinsella reunites with the internationally renowned and legendary Ithaca-based pioneering reggae band he started – John Brown’s Body – for a once-in-a-lifetime experience on the shores of Cayuga Lake.

  • Goose Announce new Drummer, “Ted Tapes 2024,” Headline Tour Stopping at CMAC and Forest Hills

    It is an exciting day to be a Goose fan as the rock quintet has announced they are bringing new drummer Cotter Ellis to the group, releasing Ted Tapes 2024, an album comprised of instrumental improvisations captured during Ellis’s auditions on drums. And if that wasn’t enough, the group kicks off their new headliner tour this summer, coming to CMAC on June 15 and Forest Hills Stadium on June 29.

    Goose released their debut album in 2016 and quickly took flight, playing countless shows, and amassing a cult-like following. Known for their unique brand of irresistible songcraft, fluid musicianship, and spirited improvisational performance, the quintet’s 2022 critically acclaimed record Dripfield debuted at #2 on Billboard’s “Top New Artist Albums” chart.

    They have spent much of the past decade on a seemingly infinite tour schedule that includes sold-out headline shows at renowned venues such as Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Nashville, TN’s Ryman Auditorium, and New York City’s hallowed Radio City Music Hall; a sold-out co-headline run alongside Trey Anastasio Band; a sold-out EU/UK headline tour, and show-stealing appearances at such festivals as Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Electric Forest, and Dead & Company’s Playing In The Sand in Riviera Cancun, MX. Recent highlights include a sold-out, five-night run at the historic Capitol Theater and 2023’s 10th annual Goosemas holiday celebration at Hampton, VA’s famed Hampton Coliseum.

    “I first saw Cotter play with his band Swimmer at Nectar’s some years ago,” says Rick Mitarotonda. “I was sitting solo at one of the bar tables right in front of the stage with the PA ripping. The set was awesome, they’re all fantastic players and I was taken with the buoyant energy and how much fun they were having. Something had me glued to the drums though. His pocket and feel were gripping. He really told a story with his playing that night. It was an experience that always stuck with me.”

    These Ted Tapes tracks are improvisational moments from the first few sessions with Cotter, recorded solely for the purpose of reference, not intended for any kind of release. The instruments and microphones were rigged up quickly, and the playing was raw and free from any expectations. The first track, “Leo,” is the opening pick up jam from the first session, the first notes ever played together. There were some consistent threads we all felt in the room throughout these early sessions; ease of communication, freely flowing ideas, and a feeling of effortlessness moving through different zones. We experienced a patience that allowed all of our personalities to come out and energy to well up in new ways. It feels like a door just beginning to open. We couldn’t be more stoked for what’s to come.

  • The Stone Pony Commemorates 50 Year Anniversary with “Stone Pony Day” and Other Events

    The Stone Pony, an iconic venue and cornerstone of musical history, proudly announced its 50th-anniversary celebration. In honor of this monumental milestone, the New Jersey State Legislature, Monmouth County, and the City of Asbury Park united to proclaim Feb. 8 as “Stone Pony Day.”

    The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, one of the world’s best-known music venues, opened its doors on Feb. 8, 1974, in a building that formerly housed a popular restaurant called Mrs. Jay’s. Founders John P. “Jack” Roig and Robert “Butch” Pielka first met while working in a club on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, and the rest was history, Locals like Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and Steve Van Zandt helped put the venue on the map, while today’s top artists and rising stars continue building a musical legacy. Artists that have graced the stage include Elvis Costello, The Ramones, Cheap Trick, Green Day, Oasis, No Doubt, blink-182, The Band, Iggy Pop, AFI, Warren Zevon, Joan Osborne, Luke Combs, Weezer, The 1975, Bleachers, and many more.

    On Thursday, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m., the venue will kick off a yearlong celebration with two weeks of special events, beginning with the proclamation ceremony that features distinguished local dignitaries. Following the proclamation the public celebration “Cheers to 50!” starts at 7 p.m. Original owner Jack Roig and General Manager Caroline O’Toole will raise a toast to 50 years of music and memories, accompanied by the Pony’s original house DJ, Lee Mrowicki, spinning the greatest hits.

    On Feb. 9, Asbury Park’s The Parlor Mob is reuniting for a special show at 7 p.m. The celebration continues on Feb. 10 with an event presented by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music, titled “Celebrating The Stone Pony Anniversary: Spotlighting 50 Legendary Years of Music Memories.” The event features Stone Pony founder Jack Roig, legendary musicians, impresarios, and other influential figures sharing intimate stories and memories.

    Feb. 16 and 17 hosts special shows by the Jukes, led by the charismatic Southside Johnny. They have graced the Stone Pony’s stage numerous times throughout its 50 years, leaving a mark on its rich musical history. From energetic live performances to the creation of timeless anthems, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes have been integral to The Stone Pony’s narrative, embodying the spirit and soul of the vibrant music scene.

  • The Local in Saugerties Plans to Revamp with New Stage

    The Local, a new center for arts, culture, and community in Saugerties, has announced they plan to ramp up the venue with a new stage, enabling concert-goers to see the artists better and add to the audience experience.

    Housed in a former Dutch chapel built in 1876, The Local is under the guidance of Isabel Soffer and Danny Melnick, co-founders of Hudson Valley Live. The two Saugerties-based music producers and performing arts professionals have each devoted more than 30 years to producing festivals, concerts, and curated arts experiences. Since opening its doors in September 2023, it has already welcomed more than 2,000 guests from throughout the region and beyond for Spanish flamenco, tango music and dance, West African Highlife, incredible jazz, and performances by noteworthy artists like Emel, Emily King, a tribute to Leonard Cohen, Sandy Bell, a Silent Disco with live DJs, and so much more.

    They are kicking off their first fundraising campaign to purchase this highly needed stage with a $12,500 matching gift through their fiscal sponsor globalFEST. This means the donations received are tax deductible. The funds will be used to cover the stage, which will help audience members see the performers better, and also be used to cover programming, facilities maintenance, and other venue-related expenses until they become a not-for-profit and can raise money through grants and sponsorships.

    “As the only year-round music venue and cultural center in Saugerties, we are working hard to make The Local a stable, viable, fun, and accessible resource that encourages community, cultural diversity, creativity, discovery, and economic development in the Hudson Valley,” said the venue.

    For every dollar people donate, it matches to two with the sponsors’ help. The campaign site has different tiers that people can donate to, with some including two tickets to an upcoming show, beer, wine or refreshments on the house, and shoutouts and additions to the venue’s Hall of Fame on their website.

  • NYC Festival Celebrating Black Electronic Talent, dweller, Announces Lineup

    dweller, the NYC music festival designed to amplify and celebrate Black talent in the field of electronic music, is returning for an unforgettable 2024 season, running February 20 to February 25 at clubs and underground spaces across Brooklyn.

    The dweller Festival was founded by the Discwoman collective co-founder Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, who curates the festival alongside Enyo Amexo and Ryan Clarke. dweller’s mission of properly contextualizing Black creators’ influence over the past, present, and future of dance music remains as vital and singular as it did when Hutchinson launched the festival in 2019.

    “We strive to be a black lighthouse; a siren in the storm for those who know the isolating whitewaters of electronic all too well. At this time, the authorities controlling this current seek to drown the voices and new structures that can reverse the flow of power back into our hands. We must be vigilant towards persisting as to not just speak for ourselves but redistribute resource, equity, and justice in a space that has long made its worth on the backs of the silenced,” their site wrote.

    This fifth-anniversary edition of the festival features over 75 artists holding court in seven of New York’s most exciting dance spaces with featured artwork created by Hassan Rahim’s studio 12:01. dweller’s season begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20 with a free-with-RSVP ritual gathering at MoMA PS1 in Queens, headlined by the prolific and critically-acclaimed musician Actress.

    As part of this year’s festival, the film streaming service The Criterion Channel has linked up with dweller beginning on February 1 to spotlight a collection of films that celebrate the Black roots of electronic music. Among the 13 films curated by the festival for streaming through February is the 1996 documentary, The Last Angel Of History, which explores the origins and significance of the concept of Afrofuturism in music, writing and other disciplines.

    Another film, 2003’s Maestro, explores the origins of house music via Black figures such as Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles. A selection of short films also on the playlist include Songs For Earth & Folk (2013), I Held The Truth In My Hands (2020), Pivot (2020), Lunar New Year (2021), MOSQUITO: The Movie (2022), Hyperfate (2023), Pacific Club (2023) and Trial Period (2023).   • Skaneateles Festival Gears Up for 45th Anniversary with Robinson Award

    The Skaneateles Festival has announced it is now accepting applications for the 23rd annual Robinson Award, a $2,000 prize designed to recognize an outstanding young musician for success in music performance, citizenship, and contributions to the community.  

    The idea for a Skaneateles Festival came together in the spring of 1980 in discussions between musician Lindsay Groves and Skaneateles residents Beth Boudreau and Louise Robinson. The first season, two weeks, was presented that August in the village’s Library Hall. The generous David and Louise Robinson opened their home, Brook Farm, which soon became the Festival’s center. At Brook Farm, musicians would live, eat, rehearse, relax, and perform, all because of the Robinsons’ hospitality, which extended to the thousands of concertgoers who sat under the stars and listened to music on Saturday evenings for the first 36 years of the Festival.

    The phrase “Spirit of the Festival” flowed from the spirit of the Robinsons, and their legacy continues today. The Skaneateles Festival’s 45th Anniversary season takes place from Aug. 1-24.

    In 2002 the festival created the Robinson Award, an annual scholarship prize, to honor the memory of David and Louise Robinson. The award is given annually to a young musician whose character, musicianship, and community service reflect the values of the duo – enthusiasm and dedication to music of high quality.

    Applications from students between the ages of 13 and 18 residing in the Central New York region (Onondaga, Oswego, Cayuga, Tompkins, Madison, Oneida, and Cortland counties) will be considered.  Requirements include two letters of recommendation, a written personal statement, and a 10-15 minute recording of their playing or singing. The annual presentation of the award is made at a Festival concert in August and is accompanied by a $2,000 prize. The recipient may also be invited to perform at a Skaneateles Festival event.

    A Boogie Wit da Hoodie announced his 2024 Better Off Alone global tour – a massive 39-show run across New Zealand, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom, and North America. The U.S. dates will feature special guests NLE Choppa, Luh Tyler, Dess Dior, and Byron Messia, coming to Madison Square Garden on Monday, June 24.

    A Boogie Wit da Hoodie has totaled over 21B career streams and amassed over 50 RIAA Platinum and Gold certifications, becoming one of the music industry’s biggest stars. The Bronx native has been a force to be reckoned with since arriving on the scene in 2016 and earned his place as “the most promising young rapper the city has produced in some time” (New York Times). His dynamic catalog includes world-renowned songs “My Shit,” “Drowning (feat. Kodak Black),” “Swervin,” “Look Back At It” and more, and four critically-acclaimed albums.

    A Boogie Wit da Hoodie has also become one of music’s most in-demand collaborators.   • Khruangbin Announce Tour, Coming to Buffalo, Saratoga Springs, and Queens

    Alt trio Khruangbin has announced they are embarking on a major North American tour with support from Hermano Gutiérrez, John Carroll Kirby, Peter Cat Recording Co., Men I Trust, and Arooj Aftab. The A LA SALA tour features a date at SPAC on May 26, Buffalo at Rockin’ At The Knox on May 28, and two dates at Forest Hills Stadium on Sept. 20 and 21.

    Khruangbin was formed in 2009 with Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums. They take their influence from 1960s Thai funk with their name translating to “Engine Fly” in Thai. The group has toured across the world, with praise from the NY Times, Billboard, and more. The trio recently announced their fourth studio album A LA SALA, their first LP in four years out on April 5. From the get-go, their journey has been its own, ignoring pop expectations and relying on internal aspirations and visions. The building blocks for A LA SALA’s 12 songs were pieces found in Khruangbin’s creative past, parts of the band not lost, but not yet tapped into.

    Over the last two years, Khruangbin has sold out shows at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre and London’s Alexandra Palace, released five live LPs showcasing their stage prowess – featuring guests such as Toro y Moi, Men I Trust and Nubya Garcia, collaborated with Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré honoring his late father, Ali Farka Touré, with the album Ali, and released their second collaborative EP with Leon Bridges, the sultry, chart-topping Texas Moon.

    The Ecuadorian-Swiss sibling duo Hermanos Gutiérrez will be supporting Khruangbin on a run of shows in April. Known for their psychedelic, world-building guitar music, they just released their newest single  “Blood Milk Moon”, a spacious and spectral tune that was hailed by WNYC as “night music that is somehow not dark” and named to UPROXX’s Best New Indie list. The single represents the group’s first new music since 2022’s El Bueno Y El Malo, their acclaimed and mythic debut for Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound.

  • Caffè Lena Celebrates Black History Month with Activist/Singer-Songwriter Crys Matthews

    Caffè Lena has announced it is partnering with activist/singer-songwriter Crys Matthews and local community groups to produce the Cry Matthews Black History Month Tour. The concert is happening on Friday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m.

    Cry Matthews is an activist, singer-songwriter and powerful lyricist who tackles heavy topics such as immigration, the opioid crisis, Black Lives Matter, and gun control with a warm heart, strong voice, and inspiring songs. Caffè Lena presents extraordinary music in an intimate setting, widely recognized as the longest-continuously operating folk music venue in the United States. The Library of Congress calls Caffè Lena “An American treasure,” and it has been recognized by The GRAMMY Foundation for its important contributions to the development of American music.

    The Black History Month concert is also partnering with local community groups. MLK Saratoga, Saratoga Youth Safe Space, CREATE Community Studios, Camp Stomping Ground and Saratoga Pride are tabling before the event to socialize and discuss their organization’s role in the community.

    MLK Saratoga shares Dr. Martin Luther King’s vision of peace and justice for all, building civil and human rights awareness by promoting equity, inclusivity, diversity, anti-racism, and social justice through community events and offerings, engaging via performance, dialogue, conversation, and the arts. Saratoga Youth Safe Space is a group intended to bring BIPOC youth as well as LGBTQ+ youth, and allies, together to have a place of reflection, dialogue, and support.

    C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios is dedicated to providing a space where the benefits of art-making impact both the individual and the community. They offer low-cost art workshops and groups, community wellness activities, and open studios to promote art-making and the creative process as a vehicle for personal growth, communication, and social change. Unlike other art studios, their expectations are not rooted in a product or an image. They focus on the evolution of a piece and encourage conversation about its meaning.

    Stomping Ground is an overnight camp in the gateway to the Adirondacks in Saratoga Springs. They aim to partner with young people to inspire the next generation of radically empathetic decision-makers. Saratoga Pride is a welcoming community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people and allies in the greater Saratoga Springs area.
