  • Starcatcher World Tour: Greta Van Fleet Masters Madison Square Garden

A sound must have life, be huge, take up space and matter in order to play at Madison Square Garden. On the New York City night of September 12th, Greta Van Fleet’s “Starcatcher World Tour” watered The (sold out) Garden for the very first time. “The world’s most famous arena” is a sort of heaven’s gate for any name in the music industry. The name Greta Van Fleet rolls right off the tongue and has proven their ability to collect a loyal fandom and climb the charts, and the key was handed over indubitably.

The opener, Surf Curse, a surf-rock band born in Nevada warmed up the ever-filling crowd. After their performance, the Greta Van Fleet curtain was pulled towards the iconic barrelled ceiling of Madison Square Garden. The stage sat idle, out of sight, as the pre-show setlist began to play. An intense elongated intro score played between the sets. Violins and percussion sewed together to form a melody of a sort of Nordic folk music – it was a fail-safe adrenaline amplifier.

Greta Van Fleet is a transcending rock band from Frankenmuth, Michigan. The group was fortified by three brothers, twins Josh Kiszka (lead vocalist) and Jake Kiszka (guitarist), Sam Kiszka (bassist, multi-instrumentalist), and companion Daniel Wagner (drums and percussion). Their love for each other on stage is tangible in their embraces and sweet brotherly admiration. Their journey into stardom intensified their connection and heavily dosed confidence into their production.

Lights overhead shown onto the blue and white silk of the curtain, holding steady focus on Greta’s symbol. All at once the surrounding lights shut off and strobes danced across the curtain. After the hard climax of the introduction song, the curtain dramatically fell to the foot of the stage. On an elevated platform, the four-man band was revealed, posing in formation around Wagner who sat charged behind the drums.

The Falling Sky” was their first song of the evening, which proved an excellent introduction to Josh’s prodigious vocal range and the unmatchable aptitude of Jake and Sam on the strings. The song, as does most of their discography, allows for a melodic conversation to happen between the instruments. If one speaks, the other listens and responds.

As fire shot above the band and sparks spewed to the beat of the percussion, a thick heat could be felt across Madison Square Garden’s vast rows of seating. The atmosphere of the night was spawned tonally and visually, for the stage was alive with hot fashion and literal flames. Josh wore his iconic white jumpsuit with a deep chest plunge – the eccentricity of outfits is something fans look forward to and emulate themselves. The rest of the band wore tight pearly white or black trousers, beaded blazers, glorious capes and a sparkly chainmail crop-top. Josh and Daniel’s faces were painted with elegant make-up that reflected with each stroke of spotlight.

Observing Greta Van Fleet fans felt like looking into a time capsule; fashion from the sixties and seventies re-surged that evening, as people floated around in shimmering shawls and exaggerated bell-bottoms. They thrusted upon the barricade, extending their hands towards the glimmering band members as if they were reaching for grace. It’s fascinating at concerts, how the crowd reacts physically. It’s as if the sound alone isn’t enough. Their physical bodies need something to touch to hold, because the viscerality of digesting music feels too far out of body at times.

The stage set-up served as a playground for Greta Van Fleet. The band members ran around shoeless, bounded into the air mid guitar riff, rattled their bodies to the beat of their music. Two catwalks extended into the general admission pit. There Jake and Sam took turns running out towards the edge with their instruments slung precariously over their shoulders. Multiple impressive guitar solos took place all across the stage, for their motion was fluid.

After their first couple of songs, Josh left the stage for an outfit change. He came back adorned in a navy velvet jumpsuit to match the next few songs of the setlist. The fashionable theatrics complimented their artistry greatly. They performed “Meeting The Master,” “Heat Above,” and Josh’s favorite song on their discography, “Highway Tune.” Madison Square Garden has never been louder than it was during the final chorus of “Highway Tune.” Singing along required guttural yelling of high energy.

Josh Kiszka is a special voice in the current of music. He is the birth of something new while being a timeless looking-glass through the past of rock n’ roll. He has the confidence of Freddie Mercury. He has the celestial coolness of David Bowie. He has the hypnotic stage presence of Stevie Nicks. Most impressively, he has the raw range of Robert Plant. Though, comparing him to anyone feels sinful, for he and his band are carving their own realm of rock. He is the starcatcher, an earth-rocker.

    Photograph by Emma Dowd

The transition out of “Highway Tune” turned into a drum solo by Daniel Wagner. He played with speed, edging a climax for five minutes but never finishing out the song. His intensity cooked a sweet tension in the arena, and the audience ate it up. The stamina he displayed informed the genius of their production; none of their songs ever want to end.

Towards the finish of Wagner’s solo, the rest of the band made their way to the polar side of The Garden and crowded on a small platform with their instruments. Everyone in the standing audience shifted their attention and migrated to huddle at the base of their bare feet. The next two songs, “Waited All Your Life,” and “Black Smoke Rising” were played with the keys, an acoustic guitar, and a ginormous mandolin.

After entertaining the petite B-stage for a short while, the band was escorted by security back to the main stage. A security guard carried Josh on his shoulders while Josh tossed white roses into the understandably feral crowd, while Jake, Sam, and Daniel tossed flowers on the opposite side of the arena.

    Photograph by Emma Dowd

Josh reappeared in a new jumpsuit patched with the sun and the moon. As the end of the show neared, the stakes rose. Flames reclaimed the stage, and the lights seared red. Jake took to his guitar with an impressive attack, riffing over his head and behind his back. The songs “Sacred The Thread” and “The Archer” played with the elements on stage, a thick smoke bellowed into the audience. As special as witnessing Greta Van Fleet at Madison Square Garden was, it felt like one should see them in the red dust swells of Utah, or in a spanning field with no end – some place where Earth becomes indistinguishable from the rest of the universe and all that matters is a sound.

Once “The Archer” came to a close, the band briefly waved goodbye and trotted backstage. No encore plea has ever been louder. The audience roared as one collective voice, pleading from their hearts for a return. It wasn’t long before the lights danced back to life, and the band returned in one final outfit change. Josh wore a sun pantsuit with a lavish cloak while the rest of the band seemed to lose articles of clothing, their hair a mess and eyes wild.

The key-in note of “Light My Love,” one of the band’s most successful releases, elicited a collective emote from the audience. When the second chorus blasted through the arena, sparks shot up from the stage once again. The lights stemming from the center-roof projected the colors of the rainbow, and a sea of pride flags popped up above heads in the crowd. It was a glorious moment of peace and celebration.

    Photograph by Emma Dowd

Their final song, “Farewell For Now,” was the perfect send-off. It was an ode to The Garden, a praise for the fans. The lyric: “Tonight, it’s all for you,” felt personal and honest, as the members of Greta Van Fleet looked out into the cellular starlights with awe painted blush across their faces. Once the song concluded, they gathered where they started, around Daniel and his drums to take a bow. Unable to contain their thrill, they bounced off each other as they left the stage.

    Photograph by Emma Dowd

It was jarring, while fans began to file out of the venue with stunned looks, to remember that Madison Square Garden is in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. While Greta’s performance unfolded and wrapped itself up again, the clamoring chaos of New York City persisted all around. I’m sure the magic could be felt radiating down the avenues.

  • Fall Out Boy Announce 2024 Co-Headline Tour with Jimmy Eat World, Coming to MSG and MVP Arena

Fall Out Boy has announced the second leg of their “So Much For (Tour) Dust,” now named “So Much For (2our) Dust,” with rockers Jimmy Eat World, coming to MSG and the MVP Arena in March 2024.

Fall Out Boy is one of the biggest-selling rock bands. The group is comprised of vocalist Patrick Stump, bassist and lyricist Pete Wentz, drummer Andy Hurley, and guitarist Joe Trohman, who after taking a short hiatus from the group, is back full-time.

Formed in Chicago in 2001, the group has released several albums over the years that have become a staple in the emo community. Their seventh studio album MANIA debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in January 2018 and garnered a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Album. Other records that have done well on Billboard charts include 2015’s AMERICAN BEAUTY/AMERICAN PSYCHO and 2013’s Save Rock and Roll, whose song “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)” went multi-platinum.

Photo by Joshua Davis for NYS Music.

Their first U.S. run over the summer celebrating the release of their newest record So Much (for) Stardust, proved to be a success, coming to places like Darien Lake and Forest Hills. Much like the Taylor Swift Eras Tour, which featured surprise songs every night, FOB did their own rendition, adding the Magic 8 Ball to their set. The ball would pick a song the band would play that night, and many of them hadn’t been played in over a decade, or never played live before.

fans were eager to see what came from the group next. After fans spotted the group dropping merch with “So Much For (2our) Dust,” on it a few weeks ago, the tour announcement didn’t come as much of a surprise, however, the addition of rock band Jimmy Eat World was unprecedented, yet equally as exciting.

Jimmy Eat World has just come off of a joint tour with Manchester Orchestra, and they released the single “Place Your Debts” in 2022. Also joining FOB on this momentous tour are rock bands The Maine, Hot Mulligan, Daisy Grenade, Games We Play (who was also an opener on the first leg), and Carr.

The group will stop at Madison Square Garden on March 22, and surprisingly at MVP Arena in Albany on March 24. Those lucky enough to be in the official Fall Out Boy discord server (which only opens up for seconds at a time for fans to join) will receive a presale code at 9:30 a.m. local on Sept. 13 to purchase tickets. Don’t fret though, you can join the group’s mailing list, receiving a code to purchase tickets at 10 a.m. local on Sept. 13. General sale is on Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. local.

    Madonna

Her originally scheduled performance at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 27 had to, unfortunately, be canceled, however, to make up for it, an additional date at the Barclays Center was added on Dec. 16. Beginning Aug. 29, ticket holders for the previously scheduled Aug. 27 show at MSG will be able to purchase tickets for the new Dec. 16 show ahead of the public sale for those remaining tickets on Sept. 1. Those who purchased tickets to the canceled date will be refunded, and Ticketmaster will then provide all affected fans with a dedicated link and a unique code based on the quality of their previous seat locations to purchase tickets to the new date.

The original tour dates were postponed following Madonna’s hospitalization in June for a serious bacterial infection. She has since made a remarkable recovery.

  • Goin’ Down to the Central Part of Town: Nights 6 and 7 of Phish at Madison Square Garden

We are now at the end of Phish’s seven-night run at Madison Square Garden, and the band has continued their hot streak, finding new room for jamming in old standards, and then some.

    Perri Sage Photography

Opening up the Friday, August 4th show with “Buried Alive,” “The Moma Dance” and “46 Days,” Phish was driving out of the gate, energetic and not missing a beat over this 25-minute opening segment. The only lull of the set came in the form of the debut of “Back in the Bubble” and “Bouncing Around the Room,” both of which were, in hindsight, well placed, as the remainder of the set had little room to breathe. “Birds of a Feather,” welcome as always in the first set, which led to a substantial “Halley’s Comet” that followed, with Trey Anastasio changing the lyrics to “I’m going down to the central part of New York City,” his second nod to the Big Apple in the last two shows. On par with the ever so smooth segue found late in the first set on Wednesday, Phish segued fluidly into an ethereal “Roggae,” before sticking the landing of the set with “Run Like an Antelope.”

    Perri Sage Photography

If there was a theme of playing better than the previous night, the second set maintains that theory, with an immense “Mike’s Song” with a jam that had people wondering, “Is this still Mike’s?,” all while getting deep into the more than 23 -minute jam, which stands to be the second longest version of the song ever. Shrugging off a potential turn towards “Tweezer,” the band eventually shifted into “Sand,” getting even deeper with Trey finding a familiar riff that segued sveltely into the Talking Heads “Crosseyed and Painless.” The lone breather of the set, “A Life Beyond a Dream” gave way to “The Lizards,” well-placed deep in the second set. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” closed the set, only the third appearance of the Beatles song in the last 10 years.

During the breather before the encore, the crowd knew what to expect and the band delivered – an encore of “Weekapaug Groove” had the fans as hyped as at any point this run. And when the band could have called it a night, the opening notes to “Fluffhead” kept the crowd cheering on, shouting “Fluff came to New York” along with the perma-grinned Anastasio, an exclamation point on the penultimate show of a legendary run at The Garden for Phish.

Phish – Madison Square Garden, Friday, August 4, 2023

Set 1: Buried Alive, The Moma Dance, 46 Days > Back in the Bubble[1], Bouncing Around the Room, Birds of a Feather, Halley’s Comet[2] -> Roggae, Run Like an Antelope

Set 2: Mike’s Song > Sand -> Crosseyed and Painless > A Life Beyond The Dream, The Lizards, While My Guitar Gently Weeps

    Encore: Weekapaug Groove > Fluffhead

    [1] Phish debut.
[2] Lyrics changed to “central part of New York City.”

With one last night to play with, Phish left very little to chance and delivered a powerhouse Saturday performance featuring a completely unexpected bust out to go out on the highest of notes. After a fan’s wedding proposal and successful engagement on the floor prior to the show, the band seemingly picked up on this and fittingly opened with “Loving Cup.” A shift into “Maze” immediately afterwards produced another spine-tingling crowd roar early on that signaled MSG’s collective readiness. A mid-set “Divided Sky” felt perfectly placed and the “Prince Caspian” that came next followed in the footsteps of other recent ones and went especially deep. “Drift While You’re Sleeping” then wrapped things up in its now familiar set closing spot.

With one last set to go, and still no “Tweezer” in sight, it was almost a matter of when, not if, Phish was going unleash its second set staple. Fans wouldn’t have to wait long once the set opening “Set Your Soul Free” finished with Trey Anastasio quickly jumping into the signature opening licks of the song everyone was expecting. This “Tweezer” was no certainly no slouch and served as the springboard for Phish to usher in the return of “Guy Forget,” the first time played since 2011, over 400 shows ago. It certainly came out of left field, but Phish stuck with it, making it well more than a tease and turning it into a full on jam, with “Tweezer” quotes continuing to weave in and out effortlessly. As the jam wound down into near ambience, “What’s The Use?” followed, showing just how quiet MSG can get as well when needed. A full scale “Scents and Subtle Sounds” brought things back to life and with it, another discernable “Tweezer” jam that paved the way for “Everything’s Right,” an accurate statement about the evening, and the entire run, as a whole. A brief little “Manteca” quote even managed to sneak in here. After a completely raucous “Tweezer Reprise” that closed out the set, Phish delivered one last classic with a mesmerizing and patient take on “Harry Hood,” closing out the run in style and setting the stage for what promises to be two incredible shows at SPAC in a few weeks.

  • Phish Keep Garden Residency Rolling on Nights 4 and 5

After their first weekend at Madison Square Garden, Phish took a day off and returned with even more energy, making the Tuesday, August 1 show stand head and shoulders above the three previous shows.

    phish madison square garden

Opening up with a monstrous “Ghost” laid the groundwork for deep, exploratory jams, including an ethereal, outstanding version “Reba” that followed. You’d be remiss to find a version of Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch” that did not pair up as well with the energy that flowed from “Reba”‘s finale. “Timber (Jerry the Mule)” had a much longer presence in the first set than typically found, flowing into the debut of “Broken Into Pieces.” A rip-roaring 17-minute “Wolfman’s Brother” was quickly discussed at setbreak as one of the best versions ever seen, and the Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus” closed, easily the best first set of the run.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_mwN-I-OJU

Throwing it back to the Baker’s Dozen, Set 2 opened with the rarely jam-friendly “Sample in a Jar,” and tonight would end up being the longest version of the Hoist track, at more than 17 minutes in total. The jam would spill over to “Kill Devil Falls” which included quotes from a new song not played this evening “The Well” from Fishman, and made for two sets of the first two songs combining for more than 28 minutes of music to get things started. “Golden Age” was another substantial jam to follow this pairing, with “Shade” giving the crowd a breather before dipping into the warm waters of “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley,” funk filling in the round room. A short “Twist” and set closing “You Enjoy Myself” would be the cap to the second set, fully

For an encore, “Wilson” made an appearance where you might find “Cavern” or “Golgi Apparatus” following, but the ever rare “Sanity” making its first appearance in two years, giving fans a chance to cross this tune off their “Most Common Phish Songs Not Heard” list. Just when you thought it was over, the hi-hat intro of “David Bowie” gave way to an unexpected (now) three song encore, with a dialed in jam that seemed to be cut short after Trey and Fishman had a chat, only to close out “Bowie” and bring in “Character Zero” for the grand finale of the evening.

Phish – Madison Square Garden, NYC – Tuesday, August 2

Set 1: Ghost, Reba, Funky Bitch, Timber (Jerry the Mule), Broken Into Pieces[1], Wolfman’s Brother, I Am the Walrus

Set 2: Sample in a Jar > Kill Devil Falls[2] > Golden Age, Shade > Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley > Twist, You Enjoy Myself

Encore: Wilson > Sanity, David Bowie > Character Zero

    [1] Phish debut.
    [2] Unfinished.

If there is a theme emerging from this run of Phish shows, it would simply be that each show is better than the last. Wednesday, August 3rd put that theory to the test, opening up with a pair of animal tunes, “Possum” and “Guyute,” both of which might be a vanilla way to start the show, but tonight the energy was high. So high that the Apples in Stereo song “Energy” reemerged in the rotation for the first time since last summer, providing a wonderful jam that found its way into the “Meatstick.” The fan interaction tune was met with a jam that followed and one of the smoothest segues you’ll find this summer as it moved into “It’s Ice.”

Set two opened with a slow, funky jam, reminiscent of the Island Tour’s “Cavern” opener, and that was exactly the song that would emerge, a slow and funky version of the normally late-set tune. A fiery “Carini” followed, which brought back a jam on “Angels We Have Heard on High,” riffed by Trey quite a bit and also found in the “Kill Devil Falls” of Syracuse a few weeks prior. Following “Piper” was the new track, “The Well,” which at first sounds like “Wolfman’s Brother Part 2” but that’s just the first half. The second half of the song was one of the deepest jams the band could provide in a new song, one that fans will be clamoring for at SPAC and Dick’s later this summer.

Closing the set were the “2001” jam-adjacent “The Howling”, “Taste” and “About the Run,” with a “Chalkdust Torture” tacked on at the end for good measure. For an encore, keyboardist Page McConnell appeared on stage with his keytar, signaling “Frankenstein,” which hadn’t been heard live since before Covid. But that wasn’t all – Anastasio would end up playing the opening notes to “Slave to the Traffic Light” for the final song of the night, eliciting immense cheers from the audience when Trey sang “Seen the Greatest City.”

Phish – Madison Square Garden, NYC – Wednesday, August 3

Set 1: Possum, Guyute, Axilla (Part II) > Energy -> Meatstick -> It’s Ice > Blaze On

Encore: Frankenstein[2], Slave to the Traffic Light[3]

    [1] Slow, funky version.
    [2] Page on keytar.
[3] Lyrics changed to “see the best city.”

  • Phish Kick off 7 Nights at MSG with Plenty of Jams

Phish began their seven-night run at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on Friday, July 28, a well-anticipated run in the middle of their Summer Tour, which was recently extended to include two benefit shows at SPAC in late August.

Kicking off Night 1 with the re-emergence of “Evening Song,” which hadn’t been played live in more than a year, Phish shifted into an extended and spaced out “Wave Of Hope,” two common themes through each set of music so far. Friday’s first set also featured a funked out “Cities,” an all-too-fitting “Old Home Place” for the band’s 73rd performance at Madison Square Garden, and an explosive “My Soul” to cap things off.

Friday’s second set began with “More” and the band took this to heart and applied it to the massive “Ruby Waves” that followed, one of the new truer jam vehicles of this era. Seamless segues into a riveting “Plasma” and “Simple” also highlighted the set before a super dark, scary and all around amazing “Split Open and Melt” served as a momentous set closer.

Saturday evening’s show picked up right where Friday’s left off in terms of energy and musical cohesiveness beginning with the show-starting “Get Back On The Train.” Phish again delivered a massive blow in the two-spot with an early but effective “Down With Disease.” More familiar first set tunes like ”Sugar Shack” and “Horn” also made appearances. And the band continues to mix in newer material in their sets with songs like Anastasio’s quarantine tune “Evolve,” a song quickly growing in popularity. A classic take on “Foam” followed by a rousing cover of David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” ended the first set in fine fashion.

Phish continued to kick out the jams in the second set, courtesy of a super extended and exploratory “Fuego” that clocked in at close to thirty minutes in all. This was followed by another one of the new songs that is quickly making a name for itself, “Oblivion.” The set was punctuated by an absolutely raucous “2001” that had all of Madison Square Garden in a collective uproar. Things lightened up a bit afterwards with the first “Cracklin’ Rosie” cover in eleven years. There was still room for one more rocker though and “First Tube” in its typical encore slot more than served that purpose, with the Garden loudly showing its collective appreciation once more.

Phish – Saturday, July 29th, 2023 – Madison Square Garden (MSG), New York, NY

Set 1: Back On The Train > Down With Disease, The Dogs, Bug, Sugar Shack, Evolve, Horn > Foam, Moonage Daydream

Set 2: The Wedge, Fuego > Oblivion > Wingsuit > Also Sprach Zarathustra,->Hold Your Head Up > Cracklin’ Rosie > Hold Your Head Up, Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S

    Encore: Farmhouse, First Tube

The “can’t miss” Sunday show featured a first set of all old school songs played in the new school fashion, beginning with a show-opening “AC/DC Bag” that took a stroll for a bit before melding into “My Friend, My Friend.” The opening stanza also featured a truly interesting and slightly funked out “Theme From The Bottom,” the “newest” song played in the set. Things amped up even further with the rollicking “Llama” that followed which featured some mesmerizing lighting effects.

Phish then reintroduced some newer material in the second set with a “Sigma Oasis” opener that set the table for the first ever performance of “Life Saving Gun.” The “No Men In No Man’s Land” that followed featured one of the heavier and more experimental jams of the evening and the band even dusted off “Frankie Says” for a rare second set appearance. The second set concluded with “Light” and its typical powerhouse accompanying jam. An encore of “Suzy Greenberg” and a fiery take on Jimi Hendrix’s “Izabella” served as a fitting conclusion for the first weekend of Phish’s summer residency at MSG.
