  • Four Men in Four Men’s Land: Phish Return to MSG to Close out 2023

The four men of Phish returned to Madison Square Garden, their live music home base, to begin another four night run to close out another successful year. It was already their eighth visit in 2023 and their nice-round-number eightieth of their career. It all started with a show almost exactly 29 years prior, with their first traditional four-nighter 25 years ago.

Needless to say, the band felt right at home on the Midtown Manhattan stage. There’s really no need to warm up to the room that plays like their living room, and their comfort was evident from note one. The final shows of the year began with “No Men in No Men’s Land,” with the nod and wink appropriate lyric, “You’re happy that we’re here.” which received a huge roar from the anticipatory crowd. The band found room to let loose as a unit right away, with Mike Gordon’s bass driving the early action.

From there the set would take a sharp nostalgic turn, diving deep into the bands early catalog. Classic Phish fare from the irreverent barbershop-esque “Halley’s Comet,” to some of their earliest “hits” like “Sample in a Jar” and “Bouncing Around the Room” provided the crowd a trip down memory lane. Solid takes on other favorites “Runaway Jim,” “Axilla Part II,” and Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch” set the table for a strong finish.

Sticking to the early material, “Bathtub Gin” would provide the first real fireworks of this New Year’s celebration. Gordon once again pushed the agenda in the early going as the rest of the band remained within “Gin’s” lines. Page McConnell flinched first, moving to his clavinet while Trey Anastatio added sustained wails on guitar. McConell dug into some of his weirder tones and the whole thing got a bit dissonant. John Fishman pushed it forward with a marching beat and eventually locked into a dark groove with Gordon. The dark turned bright in a flash as Anastatio discovered a happy rocking theme that brought the whole thing back into the “Bathtub” to wrap it up neatly.

“Ghost” would top off the set with some more interesting improvisation, all four members combining to find an interesting theme. They quickly worked it to a peak which they sustained at for an incredible high energy workout. Gordon mixed in some “No Men’s” lyrics into the chaos but it all settled back into the “Ghost” groove as the first set of the run came to a close.

“The Howling” got things started in set two, as howling sounds bounced around the room, echoing in surround sound.

“A Wave of Hope” followed, and started innocently enough. The band coasted along for a little bit until you could almost hear the safety line being cut. The whole band dropped any semblance of a connection to the source material, diving into the deep end into a slow ooze. From there they entered mind meld territory, flipping from theme to theme without cue and without hesitation, like it was scripted. The pace quickened, slowed and sped up again. Dark, bright, rocking, cosmic, it was a journey and the map was being drawn in real time. The stage was surrounded by points of white light in a spastic swirl as Anastatio carried the final segment into bliss territory. They found their way to a slick transition into “Rift,” one of a few solid segues on the night.

A quasi-classic “Mike’s Song” > “Simple” segment gave the set more solid anchors to hang some cred on. Gordon played around with the rocking groove as the lights rode the deep end waves, undulating high above. As a counterpoint to the one-ness found throughout “A Wave of Hope,” in “Mike’s” the band fractured, fragmenting and deconstructing pieces of the jam. It got heavy and industrial, but never lost the underlying groove. It roared up to an unusual “Mike’s Song” peak that had hints of “Tweezer Reprise” hidden just beneath the surface.

The ensuing “Simple” again provided a contrast, staying spacey and ambient for most of it’s runtime. And as that time ran low, it transitioned excellently into a rocking “Blaze On” set closer, which featured solid in-the-pocket jamming from the whole unit.

Between new songs, old songs, and a full smattering of influences on display, Phish was setting the table nicely as they invited their fans into their home away from home to celebrate another year in the books. But with a long four-song encore that had multiple “ok now it’s over” moments, they were the hosts who couldn’t let their guests leave without a few proper good-byes. They welcome another party in the next three nights at the Garden. Shows 81 through 83 and year 2024 await. But who’s counting?

  • AJR Releases “The Maybe Man” at Irving Plaza

In an exhilarating double-header on November 12th, the vibrant pop trio AJR surprised their New York City fanbase with an extraordinary day of music. The city that shaped their artistic journey witnessed a surprise daytime performance at Madison Square Park, paving the way for an epic night at Irving Plaza to commemorate the release of their latest album, “The Maybe Man.”

From the heart of Chelsea to the iconic Irving Plaza stage, the Met brothers, Adam, Jack, and Ryan, guided their audience through a musical odyssey, unveiling both the fresh creations from their new album and the cherished classics. The unexpected nature of these events added an extra layer of thrill, transforming an ordinary Friday into an extraordinary experience for fans who found themselves captivated by AJR’s distinctive soundscapes and infectious energy.

Hailing from the bustling streets of Chelsea in New York City, AJR is a dynamic pop trio comprised of brothers Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met. Their musical journey began in the living room of their city apartment, where they cultivated a distinctive sound that defies easy categorization, blending pop, indie, and electronic elements. Influenced by the diverse energy of NYC, their breakout single “I’m Ready” showcased their knack for catchy hooks and innovative sampling.

With hits like “Weak” and “Burn the House Down,” AJR has captivated a dedicated fanbase, exploring themes of self-discovery and modern life complexities through their music. Natives of Chelsea, the trio’s artistic DNA is deeply rooted in the city’s diversity and constant buzz, shaping their evolution into one of the most exciting and innovative acts in contemporary music. From the urban landscapes of Chelsea to the global stage, AJR’s journey reflects the enduring spirit of creativity inspired by the heartbeat of New York City.

“The Maybe Man” stands as the latest sonic adventure from the chart-topping trio, AJR. Released on November 10, 2023, this marks their fifth studio album and a notable transition as it becomes the first under their newly inked deal with Mercury Records. The anticipation for the album began to build during their 2022 world tour, where the sneak peek of the unreleased track “I Won’t” served as the catalyst. Fans eagerly speculated on the album’s title, unraveling the mystery on November 12, 2022, as “TMM” was revealed, prompting imaginative guesses like “The Music Men” and “Ten Meter Men.”

Building up to the release, the band strategically dropped singles, including the emotionally charged “God Is Really Real,” a poignant tribute to their father, Gary. The animated teaser video released on August 28, 2023, featuring Jack Met’s journey through various landscapes, culminated in the revelation of the album’s title track, “Maybe Man.” The tour announcement on November 8, which includes 2 shows at Madison Square Garden in April 2024, further underscores the grandeur surrounding this remarkable album release, inviting fans to immerse themselves in the magic of AJR’s musical universe.

The Irving Plaza show itself was a rollercoaster of emotions, pranks, and heartwarming moments that left fans buzzing with excitement. Jack kicked things off with a resolution to be more positive towards Ryan during this album cycle, but true to form, couldn’t resist poking fun at him after the first song, “Maybe Man”. Ryan, on the other hand, shared a humorous anecdote about a dozing-off 10 year old fan during “100 Bad Days,” emphasizing the cyclical enthusiasm whenever eye contact was made.

The band playfully teased the young fan chasing Ryan’s approval and pretended to entertain on fan song requests like “Thirsty” and an impromptu tattoo-drawing session. Jack continued the brotherly teasing, asserting that a young fan was seeking Ryan’s approval, deeming it underrated. Fan interactions included an acapella rendition of “Thirsty” by their photographer Austin, responding to a fan’s sign, and collaboratively drawing a fan’s next tattoo, with Jack humorously criticizing Adam’s addition.

“Steve’s Going to London” became a heartwarming sing-along, and the brothers shared a poignant moment, expressing gratitude for their late father, Gary, whose favorite thing surpassed even pastrami sandwiches (#2) and his sons (#3) — the fans. A Gary chant echoed through the crowd, and Jack revealed their dad heard the new album before his passing.

Drumming up nostalgia, Jack joined in on the drums for “Don’t Throw Out My Legos,” and a production breakdown preceded the track. “Inertia” got its inspiration from a friend’s inertia-laden job at a bank, adding a humorous touch to the performance. The show concluded with a faux farewell, leading into the encore with “Weak” and “2085,” leaving the audience on a high note and cementing AJR’s reputation for unforgettable live performances.

In tandem with the recent album promotion, AJR is making a stop at Rough Trade Records in NYC for an in-store record signing for “The Maybe Man”.

Be sure to also catch the band on their first arena tour this spring when they bring their incredible energy to the stage at Madison Square Garden!

  • Billy Joel Announces 100th MSG Residency Show for March 2024, Adds Three More

Billy Joel announced his 100th monthly and 146th lifetime show at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, March 28, 2024. This show is part of his record-breaking, sold-out residency, with his final show, and his 150th lifetime show at the venue, slated for July 2024.

Joel also announced two performances at the iconic venue on April 26, 2024, May 9, 2024, and June 8, 2024.

    Billy Joel

Billy Joel’s history with Madison Square Garden began with his first performance at The World’s Most Famous Arena on December 14, 1978. In 2006, with 12 consecutive performances, Joel set the record for “most consecutive performances by any artist,” commemorated with a banner stating “Joel – 12” in the venue’s rafters, making him the first entertainer in the venue’s history to accomplish this feat.

He is one of the world’s most iconic musicians, having received The Kennedy Center Honors, one of the United States’ top cultural awards, in December 2013. He is also the recipient of six GRAMMY Awards, including the prestigious Grammy Legend Award. He has sold 150 million records over the past 25 years with 33 Top 40 hits.

Joel received both The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song which honors living musical artists’ lifetime achievement in promoting the genre of song as a vehicle of cultural understanding; entertaining and informing audiences; and inspiring new generations, and the once-in-a-century ASCAP Centennial Award, which is presented to American music icons in recognition of their incomparable accomplishments in their respective music genres and beyond.

In December 2013, he was named Madison Square Garden’s first-ever music franchise, joining the ranks of the venue’s other original franchises – the New York Knicks and New York Rangers. The record-breaking residency began in January 2014 with Joel playing one show every month at The Garden for, as Joel said at the time, “as long as the demand continues.” In January 2015, Joel broke his own record of the “most consecutive performances by any artist” with the 13th show of the residency, and a new banner was raised to The Garden’s rafters.

In July 2015, with his 65th lifetime show, he broke another record for the “most lifetime performances by any artist,” for which another banner was raised. Both of Joel’s banners continue to hang at The Garden and are replaced each month with each performance. In July 2018, he performed his 100th lifetime performance at the venue, commemorated as “Billy Joel Day” in the state. His piano was put on display outside of Chase Square, and the performance saw Bruce Springsteen onstage with the Piano Man.

A multitude of other incredible surprise guests have joined him on stage throughout the course of the ten-year run including Miley Cyrus, Jimmy Fallon, John Fogerty, Billy Gibbons, Brian Johnson, John Mayer, John Mellencamp, Olivia Rodrigo, Paul Simon, and more. He also sold more than 1.6 million tickets from all 50 states and more than 120 countries.

  • Madison Square Garden Given Short 5-Year Permit by New York City Council

Madison Square Garden received the shortest extension in the arena’s history, with The City Council unanimously voting on September 14 to give the venue only a five-year permit to continue to operate above Penn Station in Manhattan.

    Madison Square Garden Permit
Photo by Gabriela Bhaskar for The New York Times.

“At this time the Council cannot determine the long-term viability of an arena at this location, therefore five years is an appropriate term for this special permit,” said Erik Bottcher, a Manhattan councilman whose district encompasses Madison Square Garden. The arena’s owner, James Dolan’s MSG Entertainment, wanted a permanent extension of the operating permit, which expires this year, receiving ten-year permits in the past.

“A short-term special permit is not in anyone’s best interest and undermines the ability to immediately revamp Penn Station and the surrounding area,” MSG Entertainment said in a statement. The issue at hand is the ongoing tension between Penn Station and the Garden. There needs to be a creation of a transportation management plan to address “use conflicts” related to the arena’s loading operations on West 31st Street and pedestrian access, with MSG ordered to provide a plan within six months of its progress. If the venue fails to do so, they could have their operating permit revoked.

“I still believe that ultimately, we would be able to build the most extraordinary train station if Madison Square Garden was not there,” Bottcher said in an interview.  “I’m still hopeful that would happen someday, but in the immediate term there are plans under consideration that would permit us to have a very extraordinary Penn Station with Madison Square Garden in place.‘’

For now, state officials are focused on a $7 billion renovation of the station, putting away a broader redevelopment plan for the area.
