Huntington Summer Arts Festival Hosts Performances Throughout July

The Huntington Arts Council (HAC) is bringing live music to Long Island during the entire month of July with the Huntington Summer Arts Festival. The festival is now in its 48th season and features performances from July 1- 30. Concerts will take place at the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park.

Free to attendees, the Huntington Summer Arts Festival aims to celebrate established acts while also highlighting up-and-coming artists. This year’s celebration features festival regulars Huntington Community Band, who perform each Wednesday of the month. Concertgoers still have the chance to see Huntington favorites North Shore Pops Concert Band.

This summer’s roster of musicians come from a diverse set of musical backgrounds. Genres like swing jazz, latin, R&B/Soul, rock, and classical are all represented at the festival. In addition to music, the Huntington Summer Arts Festival also includes dance and theatrical performances. The group Sol Y Sombra Spanish Dance Company performed earlier this month. Attendees however will still have the opportunity to catch the L.I. Dance Consortium is set to take the stage on July 23.

Created in 1963, The Huntington Arts Council has been a pillar in the Long Island arts scene. The organization looks to celebrate and nourish the cultural diversity of Long Island through different avenues. HAC is involved with constructing and sponsoring a multitude of activities, programs, and events. The Council maintains that “the arts create a vibrant, energized, and culturally rich environment”.

Along with the Huntington Summer Arts Festival, HAC has also collaborated with the Folk Music Society of Huntington to bring back the Huntington Folk Festival on July 22. Co-headliners Lucy Kaplansky and Cliff Eberhardt take the stage at 8, with the festival getting underway at 12:30.

MAX Shakes up Jones Beach Theater

Port Jefferson Home To Live Music All Summer

Port Jefferson plays host to several different concerts and festivals throughout the summer months. Perfect for any music lover, the Long Island town boasts local concerts nearly every Wednesday and Thursday, July 5 through Aug. 30.

All of the shows are set to take place at Harborfront Park. The Sunset Concert Series runs from 6:30-8 on Wednesdays on the Harborfront performance stage. However, the Harborside concert series takes place at 7 on Thursdays in the Harborfront Park. The Harborside series will run each week July 6 through 20 and then two dates in August.

Port Jefferson is not the only town in the region to put on local shows. Over in Riverside, about 20 miles south of Port Jefferson, there will be a free African American Educational and Cultural Festival on July 15. The event is scheduled from 3-8 p.m. at Grangebel Park in Riverside. Alongside live music performances from some of the best local talent, the festival will also feature food trucks, merch vendors, and raffles. Visit here for details and information.

Staying close to Port Jefferson, the Port Jefferson Station & Terryville Free Summer Concert Series will happen in July and August. Scheduled for each Wednesday, July 5 to August 2, the concert series takes place at the Chamber Train Car Park. The shows are free and will feature performances from several local artists. Interstate Island Release Rock Single “Grey Wolf”

LI rock band Interstate Island have just released their newest single “Grey Wolf” on May 18^th. The single explores the dichotomies of choosing between freedom and companionship.

The track “Grey Wolf” navigates these feelings through the lens of a “lone wolf,” one searching for clarity. Throughout the song, both ideas are celebrated as the singer tries to decipher what he needs the most. Sonically, the track has a similar vibe to singers/band like Elton John, Styx, and REO Speedwagon.

Interstate Island was initially formed by Eddie Andrews, who was born and raised with a firm appreciation for classic rock music. More Inspiration for the project came after seeking to reimagine Electric Light Orchestra’s classic albums of the 1970’s. The first visions of Interstate Island emerged in 2019 when Andrews met with accomplished producer Matt Wallace (O.A.R., Maroon 5, Andy Grammer).

Matt Wallace had listened to a few of Andrews’ demos and expressed an interest in working together on a project. They initially recorded an early version of “Love Song” with a group of rock musicians who have regularly toured and recorded with some of the world’s most successful artists.

While the results were inspiring, Andrews believed there was an opportunity to expand on the concept by incorporating leading (as opposed to background) string arrangements – and perhaps using a live orchestra to perform those arrangements.

After a brief hiatus caused mainly by the Covid-19 pandemic, Wallace and Andrews were finally able to record Brave New World in 2021. Simultaneously, Interstate Island began to scope out the best fit for a leading string arranger.

Since a centerpiece of ELO’s work was the way in which they glistened string arrangements over pop-rock tracks, Andrews felt this was imperative to incorporate. This led Andrews to collaborate with Steve Turner, a well renowned arranger who previously toured with Electric Light Orchestra.

Hot Tuna to open the Great South Bay Music Festival on July 20 on their Final Tour

Rock duo Hot Tuna will kick off their final “Electric Hot Tuna” tour on July 20, opening the Great South Bay Music Festival at Shorefront Park in Patchogue. The duo will stop in Upstate New York in September before wrapping up their tour at the Beacon Theatre in NYC.

The duo, which comprises Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, originated in San Francisco and has been making music for more than 50 years. They released their self-titled debut studio in 1970, and have since their most recent studio album was 2011’s Steady as She Goes. While their last official album was released over a decade ago, Hot Tuna is still going strong, soon to begin a tour across the country this month.

Members of Hot Tuna have come and gone, but Casady and Kaukonen have been steady members since its inception, while also maintaining solo careers. Casady released a solo album, Dream Factor, in 2003, while Kaukonen begin his solo career early into Hot Tuna’s career, releasing a solo record, Quah, 1974.

Hearing Aide: Evil Sweet’s Pop-Rock EP “Queen Victoria”

New York-based alternative indie band Evil Sweet has just debuted their newest EP Queen Victoria, on April 28^th. According to the band, the album evokes a different she of love at various stages in a relationship.

Evil Sweet is an up-and-coming pop-rock band based in Long Island founded by members Scotty O’Brien-Curcie and Zachary Castro. Thus, having achieved over 100K streams on the singles for the EP and playing legendary venues like The Bowery Electric. Their energy is familiar to indie artists like The Neighborhood, Tame Impala and Arctic Monkeys.

Zach is the guitarist and rapper for the group with Scotty on lead vocals, both having heavy roles in the songwriting. Evil Sweet blends multiple genres like rock, pop, blues, folk, and hip-hop. The two have been creating music together since their early high school years.

When listening to the album, keep in mind that each song is supposed to represent a different stage of love in a relationship. Queen Victoria is a unique album for Evil Sweet to release, it has sweet and delicate songs like “Long Live The Queen,” where the lyrics are quite meaningful. Almost very similar to Panic! At The Dico’s 2008 release Pretty Odd.

The intro song “Something” also hits differently, having sounded straight out of an 80’s soundboard, flowy and bubbly. Songs like “Queen Victoria” and “Out of Nowhere” are energetic and high-strung, the vocalist reminiscent of The Kooks. “How To Love You” was a favorite on the album, having meaningful lyrics and an upbeat tempo.

The band has also had an amazing start to 2023 with the two singles “Something” and “Out of Nowhere” achieving over 100,000 streams on Spotify being interviewed by underground indie-blog “Girl at the Rock Shows.” Evil Sweet prepare for the release of their debut EP Queen Victoria on April 28^th.

Family Dinner Release Empowering Single “Revenge Dress”

Long Island’s Family Dinner have just served the release their newest single “Revenge Dress,” a empowering/spicy break-up track. The band has also announced a few shows with The Dirty Nil this July and will head out on a short run with Only Sibling this week.

“Revenge Dress” is a total breakup anthem and with lines like “This pretty face is gonna raise some hell tonight,” it’s hard not to get stuck in your head. The song rides from floaty to fierce, with chiming riffs and upbeat drums complementing Natalie O’Keeffe’s cool and collected vocals. Along with this release, the music video for the song encapsulates the mood of the lyrics.

Speaking on the song, Natalie expands by stating, “‘Revenge Dress’, put very simply is a breakup ‘fuck you’ song about realizing your worth and no longer letting yourself get taken for granted. The best revenge is success and nothing gets you over some loser more than looking good and raising hell with your friends.”

Formed in 2017, Family Dinner are friends first and a band second. Living just a few miles apart, the group formed naturally when drummer Nick Amalfitano was jamming out with guitarist Michael O’Keeffe as Natalie hummed melodies while making dinner, and thus the band name came to be.

The members of Family Dinner are almost as carefree as the beach town they reside in. The band has created a unique alternative rock sound that makes you want to dance, paired with lyrics that take a dark twist.

Rounded out by bassist Sam Weiss, Family Dinner began crafting songs, released a few singles, and started playing shows at DIY spots within the tight-knit Long Island music scene. In 2021 the band released the EP, You’re So Cool, four melodic tracks that pull from 90’s alternative rock and punk ethos.

Following the EP, the band knew they had something special on their hands and soon found themselves opening for acts like The Lemonheads, Grouplove, Bayside and Iron Chic. Entering the studio with Brett Romnes and Vinnie Caruana (The Movielife, I Am The Avalanche) last year, Family Dinner is currently putting the finishing touches on their debut full-length.

The Sleeping Announce First Album in 13 years, “I Feel Like I’m Becoming A Ghost”

Long Island’s The Sleeping has just announced the upcoming release of I Feel Like I’m Becoming A Ghost, out July 28th. After coming down from the high of two sold out reunion shows in Brooklyn and on Long Island, the post-punk outfit band has announced their first new album in nearly 13 years featuring their original lineup that hasn’t written together in over 16 years.

“Now that this is the original lineup, it feels like a massive evolution,” says vocalist Douglas Robinson. “I would describe this new record as a band that stayed true to who they are while completely reshaping the approach to their sound. This record feels way more focused from every angle, but it’s us at its core. We were never a band who copied our influences. Everything that we put out is influenced by our love for music as a whole, and not just particular bands or artists.”

On I Feel Like I’m Becoming A Ghost, The Sleeping dials in their eccentric and erratic blend of ambient indie rock, post-punk, and melodic hardcore. The abum overall shines a light on mental instability. It was written, recorded, and produced at Applehead Recording in Woodstock, NY with the infamous production duo Mike Birnbaum and Chris Bittner (Coheed and Cambria, Bad Brains, Weerd Science, Team Sleep) with insight from the band.

The Sleeping formed in 2003 in Long Island, founded by Cameron Keym, Sal Mignano, and Joe Zizzo. After auditioning twenty-two potential vocalists, they came across Douglas Robinson, former singer/guitarist of the band Stillwelle.

Their live performances are known for their emotive, high-energy and tight-knit sound. They’ve toured with infamous bands like Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside and ALEXISONFIRE. Their music has been featured in video games including Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam, Madden NFL 07, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero: World Tour, and FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage.

Rising Punk Band The Knottie Boys to Perform Twice in New York this April

The Knottie Boys, a rising punk rock band from New York, are scheduled to perform their EP A Face Fulla Dirt twice in New York this spring. Their first performance will be at Club Odyssey in Oneonta on April 9 at 7 p.m. This will be followed on April 11 at 6 p.m. with a performance at Amityville Music Hall in Long Island, part of Makes My Blood Dance’s tour.

A Face Fulla Dirt compiles five punk rock tracks from The Knottie Boys. The entire EP can be enjoyed in less than a half hour (for those in a rush, at least.) Otherwise, it’s safe to say the crowd will be demanding an encore at their Oneonta and Long Island shows. There’s enough variety in their music for everyone to enjoy, but there’s still more than enough energy in their tracks to sustain an action-packed live performance. If you’re looking for a fun night out with live music, The Knottie Boys are a band you can’t miss.

New York natives, The Knottie Boys formed in 2018 after high school. At the time, they were working at Hot Topic. The band is known for its theatrical playing style and story-driven songs. Their entire EP can now be listened to on Spotify. For more information, check out their official website.

SUSS Announce Concert Series in Long Island City

Ambient Country band SUSS announced on Feb. 22 that they are staging a four-night concert series in their hometown, Long Island City, this spring. The concert series will take place over four consecutive Fridays, from March 31-April 21 at the Culture Lab. All four sides of their self-titled LP will be featured in the series.

SUSS and Culture Lab have worked together in the past, including co-producing the 2021 concert film Promise Live. Night 1 will feature Night Suite, side 1 of the double LP. Night 2 will feature side 2, Heat Haze. Side 3, Winter World, will be performed on the third night. The fourth side of their LP, Across the Horizon, is scheduled for the fourth and final night of the concert series.

Long Island City natives, SUSS consists of Pat Irwin, Bob Holmes, and Jonathan Gregg. Irwin’s credits include composing for shows like Dexter: New Blood, HBO’s Bored to Death, and Rocko’s Modern Life. Holmes was a member of the band Rubber Rodeo. Gregg is formerly of the alternative country band The Linemen and had his own rock band, Jonathan Gregg and the Lonesome Debonaires. Together, the three create vivid ambient music using classic Americana instrumentation.

Culture Lab is a 501(c)(3) formed to be the arts and culture umbrella for Western Queens. Local, national, and international art, of all genres, can be enjoyed there by audiences. They provide space, resources, and a sense of community for New York artists and audiences. The 12,000-square-foot warehouse also hosts two fine art galleries, an 80-seat theater, and an 18,000-square-foot outdoor venue. Equity, diversity, and inclusion across all our platforms are among the core values at the Culture Lab.
