  • Westside Gunn Drops Star-Studded LP ‘And Then You Pray For Me’

Critically-acclaimed Buffalo native, Westside Gunn, continues to push the envelope on his “underground” status with the release of his latest LP, And Then You Pray For Me. Released this past Friday, the star-studded project features a host of hip hop heavy hitters along with a mesh of styles and sub-genres. All in all, showcasing the Griselda head honcho’s status within the game.

The Making of “And Then You Pray For Me”

Furthermore, the self proclaimed “FlyGod” took a unique approach to the creation of And Then You Pray For Me, recording most of the album overseas. Immersing himself in inspiring locals, he laid down tracks in Paris, Athens, London, and Denmark. Subsequently, as Westside Gunn cements his place in hiphop folklore, he has begun to experiment with different sounds. After years of maintaining an air of creativity and cultural fluidity with his keen fashion sense, expressive styles and interest in art, this has begun to manifest itself in his music — which has long fed the streets with a combination of boom bap and luxury drug raps. While the new experimental sounds have been well received, it has led to questions on whether Westside Gunn’s loyalty to the boom bap sound that gained him relevance has begun to waiver.

After all, the 21-track project boasts contributions from legendary figures such as RZA, Rick Ross, Jeezy and DJ Drama. While contemporary stars the Iikes of Ty Dolla $ign, J.I.D., EST Gee and producer Tay Keith make appearances with the addition of British rapper, Giggs, for a bit of European flair. Meanwhile, And Then You Pray For Me maintains its gritty feel with appearances from Griselda cohorts and fellow underground stars. Particularly, Benny The Butcher, Conway The Machine, Stove God Cooks, Rome Street and longtime producers Conductor Williams and Derringer grace the project. Ultimately culminating in an electric blend of trap, boom bap with remnants of R&B & soul samples.

    Virgil Abloh Tribute

I have Virgil Abloh doing my artwork and who left on earth can say that. I cannot disrespect his legacy, he’s immortal and I feel this is his way of blessing me; even though he’s not here in the physical.

    – Westside Gunn

In a heartfelt tribute to the late Virgil Abloh, a close friend of Westside Gunn, the renowned Off-White creative designed the artwork for And Then You Pray For Me.  Abloh, known for his innovative and boundary-pushing designs, also created the iconic cover for Westside Gunn’s 2020 album, Pray For Paris. This latest collaboration between Abloh and Westside Gunn is a testament to their enduring friendship and creative synergy.

  • NYStalgia: Revisit the last time Phish Played Buffalo, October 19, 1996

In April of 1994 Phish appeared at the Alumni Arena on SUNY Buffalo’s campus. Trey fell through a hole in the stage during soundcheck which would hobble him for the remainder of that spring tour. It’s possible the band held that incident against the entire city of Buffalo. They didn’t return until two and half years later, and that show, on October 19, 1996, would be their last ever visit to the Western NY metropolis. That was 27 years ago.

It was a show I had the pleasure of attending. A junior at Syracuse, I had netted just one show that summer, and was determined to take advantage of the Mid-Atlantic start to the tour that would wind them down the coast to Atlanta for the famous “Remain in Light” Halloween show. Tucked between Wednesday night shows in Lake Placid and Hartford, CT, which in retrospect I am not sure how I pulled off either, let alone both, was an easy rust-belt Friday-Saturday run from Pittsburgh up to Buffalo. So out we headed.

    phish buffalo

The band was a bit uneven at this point, early in the tour, and in 1996 in general. Lake Placid was nothing special, Pittsburgh was solid and this Buffalo show, was generally forgettable. And forgettable is a pretty apt word from my personal standpoint, I really don’t have a lot of strong memories from that night, couldn’t even tell you a single song they played offhand. And popping the show in for another listen, I can’t really recommend anyone put this in their queue. The playing is fine, the song selection is fine, but there’s just nothing really notable here to be worth anyone’s time.

I have but one strong memory from this show.

In those days, I was stubbornly determined to be in the front row. I literally had nothing better to do with my time. If it meant sitting out in the baking sun all day and then sprinting like my life depended on it, I did it. If it meant waiting out in the bitter cold singing “Tweezer” with some newfound friends, I did it. If it meant weaseling my way down to the floor and sneaking my way past multiple levels of security, I did it. The latter worked like a charm the previous night in Pittsburgh, a far superior show which I enjoyed front and center.

At Buffalo, I again snuck onto the floor and was biding my time chatting it up with some friends who were right on the wall of the 100 level. We were talking about the Pittsburgh show and I mentioned where I sat. They asked where I was sitting that night, and I coyly mentioned I would be in the front row again. They didn’t think I could do it, so now I definitely had to come through. Shortly before the lights went down I walked down the aisle right to the front row and there was an empty seat just waiting there for me, right in front of Trey. Easy peasy!

Some blurry footage of most of the entire show on YouTube can be found below. I watched it all. Like I said, I can’t recommend it for the music. Even for a nostalgic look back at the band and how the lights were back in “the day” is ruined by excessive zoom and blurrier than blurry footage. As I sat through the whole thing trying to figure out what I could possibly say about this show, it took until the end of the very last song for it to dawn on me. The video finally panned out to show the full stage, lights and crowd during the peak of “Run Like an Antelope.”

There is a blurry visage of a young guy in the front row bouncing up and down and throwing his fists wildly into the air as the band goes into manic climax mode. That would be me. Two plus hours of feeling somewhat down on the memory of a ho-hum concert was erased instantaneously. There’s just something about seeing a 27-year younger version of yourself, no matter how blurry, finding ultimate bliss for a few minutes. Guess the show wasn’t all that bad, that guy seemed to be enjoying it.

  • Virtuoso Bassist Thundercat Comes to Buffalo

Multi-Grammy award winner Thundercat came to Buffalo Riverworks on October 14, showcasing his talent as both a bassist and singer. After immediately selling out tickets to the Town Ballroom, promoters quickly upgraded the venue size. Hundreds of more fans got to pack in for a night of the In Yo Girls’s City Tour.

Openers Coco and Breezy started off the night in Buffalo with their upbeat energy. These musical twins have grown up with a deep passion for dance music that stems back to their time as tour dancers for Prince. They’ve taken their many influences to build a sound that fuses house, R&B, and Afro-Latino roots. These skilled producers brought their fun-filled tunes to a crowd ready to groove.

Shortly after, Thundercat – also known as Stephen Bruner – took to the stage with a Mac Miller intro song. He quickly got to shredding on the bass and filling the venue with vibey tunes. His bandmates Dennis Hamm (keys) and Justin Brown (drums) took this collective playing experience to the next level. Awe-inspiring to watch, the three got lost in the music. They play off one another while intrinsically layering one cohesive piece into another.

Thundercat performed a wide array from his musical catalog, including songs off of his 2017 album Drunk including “Uh Uh” and “A Fan’s Mail (Iron Song Suite II).” Most of his performance encapsulated his latest album, It Is What It Is

Closing out the night, Thundercat played his most recent release with Tame Impala, “No More Lies,” finishing off the night with everything harmonically sound and soulfully upbeat. A profound musician that without a doubt is inspiring other young musicians to delve into their passions head first. He even signed a young kids bass at the show.

  • Watch Stevie Nicks Perform Her Signature Looks to a Buffalo Crowd

Renowned icon Stevie Nicks came to the KeyBank Center on Wednesday, October 4 to a packed crowd. She brought a mixture of sound from her own solo album, covers with signature artists, and of course hits from her Fleetwood Mac days.

Special guest CIL opened up the night with her pop and R&B tunes. At just 20 years old she has taken her music career to new heights. CIL uses her unashamedly songwriting abilities to share her most raw and vulnerable experiences. Her soulful vocals lifted up the crowd for a magical night.

Stevie Nicks is nothing short of a singer-songwriter legend spanning over a decade. She performs with a full stage of band members and mystical lighting. She began the night with “Outside the Rain” showing off that the passage of time has had no effect on her outstanding vocal range. She followed up with Fleetwood Mac’s hit “Dreams” which brought the crowd immediately back to the hippy dippy days.

This tour paid much homage to nostalgia. Stevie brought out her old outfits from decades ago and told countless stories about tour life. She stated that Buffalo has always had a special place in her heart because it’s where she bought her first ever signature top hat. It’s a city she always feels called to return to.

Stevie then played “Gypsy,” which she said was a song that took her back to 1975 when she first felt fame and was no longer poor. Tour life back then meant traveling in a beat up car that couldn’t reverse. After, she brought out her iconic Bella Donna Cape for her performance of “Bella Donna.”

The visuals throughout the show flipped through photos over the years. One montage had both the crowd and Stevie in tears when she closed with “Landslide.” She dedicated the song to Christine McVie who passed almost a year ago. Stevie shared how she always struggled when singing this song after her best friend died. The legendary artist shared with Buffalo “something my Mother would share to me, she always said Stevie when you hurt you always go to the stage. So I’m going to the stage.”

This was a special night in Buffalo that was full of love and remembrance. As Stevie and the band members bowed, people could not stop cheering. The Keybank Center has an exciting up and coming fall schedule. Katt Williams is on stage October 7 and Shania Twain performs October 20. Get your tickets here

The multi-platinum rock group, which has consistently hit the touring charts for the past 15 years, unveiled the details of their highly anticipated 2023 winter tour, “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve – the Best of TSO & More.”

This year’s tour promises a new and larger presentation of the beloved holiday tradition, “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve,” which has captured the hearts of multiple generations. TSO will visit 62 cities, including Albany, Rochester, Buffalo, and Belmont Park (the only New York Metro area show for the season).

Stage with large crowd and red lasers with Trans-Siberian Orchestra logo and tour name.

A product of the imagination of TSO’s late founder Paul O’Neill, and based on TSO’s CD and TV special, The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, follows the journey of a runaway who breaks into an abandoned vaudeville theater on December 24. While seeking shelter from the cold, the teen is discovered by the theater’s caretaker who uses the ghosts and spirits from the building’s past to turn her life around. Following the performance of the rock opera, 2023’s tour also boasts a rocking, blazing, and laser-lit second set containing more of TSO’s greatest hits, fan favorites, and surprises. If you are unable to attend, fans at home can watch a digitally restored The Ghosts of Christmas Eve on their local PBS station.

For 27 years you have helped make Paul O’Neill’s TSO stories a part of your holiday tradition. And, for 27 years, our tradition has been to make every year’s tour better than the last for you. 2023 is no exception as this year’s tour will be the best ever. I can’t wait to see our ‘repeat offenders’ out at the shows and look forward to seeing the new faces as well.

  • Griselda Umbrella: Che Noir – A Lethal Emcee

A person can be defined by the types of questions they ask. An artist can be defined by the amount of times you have to rewind their song. Therefore, true artists like Che Noir do all that they can to discover information before asking for a helping hand. That way, they ensure that their question and respective response is worthwhile.

    Che Noir

We’re not quite sure where Buffalo keeps plucking these different heavy hitter spitters from. Seemingly, everyone who receives a coveted placement on a Griselda Records-affiliated track deserves a rewind. Nevertheless, the difference between these Buffalo Kids and the rest of the hip-hop world involves their craftsmanship, sharp wit and humility.

    Many Pieces Comprise an Empire

Every individual incorporated within the Griselda Records multiplex releases tunes through layered release patterns. The content receives clean fine-tuning, polishing, packaging and promotion.

Furthermore, it is downright magnificent to witness these artists couple words, schemes and multisyllabic patterns then just sit back, display humility and even raw shyness in their body language.

Che Noir’s mother shared wisdom with her at a very impressionable age. As time passed, these worldly gems began to stick to her ribs and the craft-sharpening accelerated. One of her first sold-out show checks went directly into studio equipment. As she continued to elevate, this buttery-smooth lyricist realized that the work she put in on her own could finally mesh with some legitimate colleagues.

A trend that we continue to hear about deals with the increasingly timid nature of individuals. Che Noir admitted herself that she had to shake the shyness off and pump her own brand heavily. Conquering interviews, freestyles, podcasts and most importantly booth work separates this quiet one who lets the bars holler loudest.

Certainly, everyone in the session believes in themselves but after these artists finish freestyling it is difficult for the audience to comprehend exactly what just took place. Che Noir’s music really drives home the intensity of her chosen sonics.

    Run It Back & Rewind

Che Noir shatters any verse as the most interwoven Shea Butter Queen and a true testament to Buffalo legend DJ Shay. DJ Shay was one of the few engineers who refused to let emcee Che punch in. A lot of times artists will only rap up until a certain point – take a break – then punch in when they’re ready to rhyme again.

DJ Shay from around the way provided some of the fondest recording memories for Che Noir and several Buffalo members of the Griselda camp. His presence and ability to instill work ethic, confidence and skills specific to an artist speak volumes. Much of the reason why Che has great breath control, transitions and poised punchline timing can be attributed to DJ Shay.

“Humans are judged by their outcomes. The results determine the future. Low key it ain’t no such thing as the end, the end is just a new start. You start how you finish.”

    AA Rashid

The most intriguing facet of Griselda and Che Noir in unison stems from their copious focus upon the artwork. Music is meant to elicit so many emotions, notably it is supposed to be timeless.

    Medieval Hustle

The artwork for Che Noir’s project “The Thrill of the Hunt” series gives medieval behemoth vibes. It exists within the realm of David & Goliath or Attilla the Hun. She actually built the entire project around the artwork from top down.

The wordplay drives the art which extends the marketing as it all operates in a cyclical nature. Che is not selling her body or her image rather she is selling an experience gleaned from carefully-sculpted verses and evocative cover artwork.

Many people just want to release content as soon as it reaches finalization. Going through the process makes one realize full potential can be reached through patience and steady momentum.

Che Noir’s work with 38 Spesh has put her in a sweet spot where she doesn’t need to drop as soon as she records. Rather, she fits right into the circumstance where art and poetic movements lead to immaculate timing and wondrous works of discography.

    Punchline Exploration

“Its all about your body language and learn to spell your ABCs.” –Che Noir

This simplistic line builds up a stellar stanza. Are you sturdy enough? Do you personify greatness? Are you outwardly social enough?

“Not equivalent to these ******* not bout they benjamins get my dividends up.” -Che Noir

This line isn’t particularly witty or clever. Its noteworthiness comes from the way she delivers it with a Big-Pun-Little-Italy-type syllabic combination.

“Never kept they word they expose themselves by their memory.” –Che Noir

This line symbolizes nostalgia and perspective. It can be interpreted in so many different ways. We took it as a nod to the notion that memories are the longest lasting moments in your own mind. People come and go, this pen will live forever.

“We playing chess it’s hard to move til you find a Queen.” -Che Noir

If this isn’t the most pure line you will hear..

Looking to be graced by her goodness? Catch Che Noir in Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 24th, 2023, her only announced show at this time.

  • The Offspring Let the Bad Times Roll at Darien Lake

The summer of throwback shows at Darien Lake continued on August 20, as The Offspring’s Let the Bad Times Roll tour stopped in Western NY. With the tour carrying the name of their 2021 album, and 10th studio cut, Canadian punkers Simple Plan and Sum 41 tag along and create a little nostalgic tour.

After starting out in the mid 80s, I am sure that Dexter Holland only dreamed of the success he has had with The Offspring. 10 studio albums, nearly 1600 concerts, and a number of punk/alternative hits, these guys found their niche and rolled with, and never really cared what the naysayers were naysaying.

With no shortage of energy and fans, Simple Plan took the stage and shredded it for nearly an hour, hitting the stage to the Star Wars theme music. With that kind of entrance, you know you are in for a killer show.

From Montreal, the wrecking crew of Pierre Bouvier (vocals, bass, percussion) Chuck Comeau (drums, percussion), Sebastien Lefebvre (rhythm guitar, vocal, bass), and Jeff Stinco (guitar, backing vocals) were all in sync from the start, pumping the crowd up, running around the stage in classis 90s alternative/punk fashion. From the opening notes of “I’d Do Anything” to the finishing tunes on “Perfect,” Bouvier had fans jumping bouncing around like a mechanical Tigger toy and giving everyone around them the middle finger, or the Simple Plan salute as he stated. He gratefully thanked fans often as he recalled the last time Simple Plan was in town, back in 2005 for a Warped Tour stop and raved about how he loved Darien Lake and the fans (if he only knew about the parking issues).

With a new album out recently, the band played “Iconic” and dedicated to anyone and everyone who has struggled or is struggling with acceptance. Bouvier urged those individuals to proudly extend their hands and offer up the finger and let others know that they will be Iconic.

As the set was coming to an end, and about halfway through “I’m Just a Kid”, Bouvier took a seat at the drums as Comeau took to crowd surfing, in an attempt to high five as many fans in mosh pit as possible.

Setlist: (entered to Star Wars theme), I’d Do Anything, Shut Up!, Jump, Addicted, Welcome to My Life, Iconic (new song), All Star/Sk8er Boi/Mr. Brightside, What’s New Scooby Doo, Where I belong, Im Just a Kid, Perfect

Following up Simple Plan and preceding The Offspring is no easy task, but Sum 41 came out and absolutely crushed any doubts that anyone had. Another solid entrance, this time to AC/DC’s “T.N.T”, Sum 41, with frontman Deryck Whibley racking up the steps on his Fitbit, was just as motivated at their predecessors and continued to amp up the crowd in preparation for the headliner.

Guitar and bass solos by Dave Brownsound, Tom Thacker, and Cone McCaslin were huge part of this set, with Frank Zummo doing his best Animal impression on the drums. These Ajax, Ontario natives came to play and did just that for the next hour for fans of all ages. Near me was a father, probably in his late 40s, having the time of his life with his young child. The kid was dancing and having just as much fun and was all smiles for the entire set of Sum 41, even more so during their cover or Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” Memories that are sure to last.

Setlist: T.N.T (entrance music), Motivation, The Hell Song, Over My Head (Better Off Dead), We’re All to Blame, Walking Disaster, We Will Rock You (Queen cover), In Too Deep, Fat Lip, Still Waiting.

With the opening acts done for the night, the packed house in Darien was riding a musically induced high that wasn’t going down anytime soon. With some time to kill, the tour had a blimp floating around the seating area with special camera such as ‘kiss cam’, ‘fuck you’ cam, and of course a “headbanging” cam where fans could pose for the camera doing the assigned task. It was the first time I have seen this at a concert, and the crowd absolutely loved it. The “baby got back” cam and the “fuck you” cam seemed to be the most popular as women were shaking their rear ends to the infamous Sir Mix-a-Lot song and giving double middle fingers as the blimp floated by or camera team was nearby. Definitely a great use of dead time as the stage was prepared for the headliner.

Taking the stage around 9:30pm, Dexter Holland and the rest of The Offspring showed Darien Lake why they have been around nearly 40 years, as they helped bring punk rock into the 90s alternative vibes.

With 10 studio albums to pull from, the setlist could have been arranged in any form and fans would have still left smiling and riding that musical high. Tonight, “Come Out and Play” was the first song. Inspired by gang and school violence in the mid 90s, as well as Holland commuting through East LA for grad school, this and many track on 1994s Smash were about what was happening in front of him. Yet 30 years later, this particular track seems to fit to landscape just the same. Regardless, still a fan favorite as displayed on this night.

As the night went on, Holland was reminiscing just as Sum 41 did about playing Darien Lake on the Warped Tour and marveled at the number of fans that poured into the venue. Bills fan, Sabres fans, and music fans alike. According to his calculations and his people, the attendance at this show, which he called the ‘best thing to happen to rock and roll’, was just under 1.48 million people. This, of course would be a new world record for a concert. I would venture a guess that either he counted wrong, or he had people from the Board of Elections tallying the tickets.

Showcasing guitar skills, Noodles and Todd Morse both were demonstrating new tracks they have learned. With opening chords from classics like Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” and GNR’s “Sweet Child O’Mine”, they both were dueling for bragging rights as Holland went right into his rendition of “Blitzkrieg Pop” from Ramones. This little number, paired with animated show on back drop screen was quite the display of talent from these punk rockers, as the sync was perfectly timed all night.

Let’s talk about that animation screen behind the band. A seizure inducing light show to rival the best, thought provoking animation (think classic 80s music videos, A-Ha, New Radicals artwork), and nonstop beats the entire night. The screen added an element to each set that took you back the first time you heard any of the bands. Truly a memorable show for those hovering around 50, and for those younger fans who are in the punk phase of their musical lives.

Setlist: Come Out and Play, All I Want, Want You Bad (with organ), Let the Bad Times Roll, Staring at the Sun, Original Prankster, Hassan Chop, Hammerhead, Bad Habit, Iron Man/The Trooper/Sweet Child O’ Mine/In the Hall of the Mountain King, Blitzkrieg Pop (Ramones), Gotta Get Away, Gone Away, Why Don’t You Get A Job?, (Can’t Get My) Head Around You, Pretty Fly (for a White Guy), The Kids Aren’t Alright, Encore: You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid, Self Esteem
