  • Five Can’t-Miss Shows in Syracuse In September

    Well, summer has come and it has gone. The days are getting shorter, the temperatures are getting cooler, but rest assured, the music scene in Syracuse is only beginning to heat up. Here are five can’t-miss shows in Syracuse in September.

    September 2, Stress Dolls at Funk ’n Waffles

    Buffalo native Chelsea O’Donnell takes the stage at Funk ’n Waffles under her touring moniker Stress Dolls on Saturday, September 2.  The alt/pop/rock artist has drawn comparisons to artists such as Lzzy Hale, Courtney Love, Fiona Apple, with one reviewer describing her sound as “Joni Mitchell meets Nirvana.. Avril Lavigne and Foo Fighters in a blender.”   O’Donnell has recently released the single “Body,” which is available on all streaming music platforms. 

    Doors open at 7pm and tickets are $10 at the door

    September 7, Thursday at Song & Dance

    New Jersey hardcore rockers Thursday make their long awaited return to Central New York with a performance at Song & Dance on September 7.  The band have close ties to Central New York, having performed at the area’s famous Hellfest music festival in 2001 and 2003.  The band are touring in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their album War All the Time. Gel, Pinkshift, and Vinnie Caruana open the show.  

    Doors open at 6:30pm and tickets start at $35.

    September 10, Kat Wright at 443 Social Club

    Rochester born singer-songwriter Kat Wright returns to Syracuse with a set at the intimate 443 Social Club on September 10.   Wright, with her dynamic vocal range powerful stage presence, which she blends between styles of soul and rock ’n roll, has drawn comparisons to performers such as Amy Winehouse and Bonnie Raitt.  She boasts an impressive touring resume, proving previous support to acts such as Grace Potter, Kacey Musgrave, and the Wood Brothers, and has also preformed at the Syracuse Jazz Festival, and the Peach Music Festival (Scranton, PA).  

    Music starts at 6pm with tickets starting at $23.

    September 22 – September 23, Tumble Down at Wonderland Forest

    Take a short drive down Interstate 81 to Lafayette and you will find the enchanted concert grounds of Wonderland Forest.  These picturesque grounds will be the home of jam-rock band Twiddle and their two day music festival, Tumble Down.  The line up boasts an impressive undercard, with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Andy Frisco + the U.N., Dopapod, Mihali, The Breakfast, Baked Shrimp, and Mike Powell also performing.  Twiddle will perform four sets over the two nights.

    Weekend tickets start at $150 with camping and VIP packages available

    September 30, Dropkick Murphys at Oncenter War Memorial

    Celtic punk rockers Dropkick Murphys return to Syracuse for a set at the Oncenter War Memorial on September 30.   Known for their high energy live performances, the band have amassed a large and passionate following.   They have an impressive 12 studio albums,  and are currently touring in support of their 2023 release Okemah Rising.   The Interrupters and Jesse Ahern open the show.

    Tickets start at $45 with music starting at 7pm.

  • Joanie Leeds Announces Album ‘FREADOM,’ Inspired by Banned Children’s Books

    GRAMMY Award-winning singer/songwriter Joanie Leeds has announced her protest against the controversial banned books movement with her new record FREADOM.

    Her daughter’s voice opens FREADOM with a heartfelt protest, introducing the powerful anthem “Banned,” setting the emotional tone for the album. Leeds and her all-star Book Band (featuring Regina Carter, Oran Etkin, Cheryl B. Engelhardt, Divinity Roxx, and SaulPaul) celebrate many of the banned children’s books with a new collection of eight original songs that joyously amplify messages of love and inclusion.

    A leading progressive voice in children’s music, the New York City-based artist Joanie Leeds is a national touring artist, early childhood educator, and activist. Since the 2003 release of her album, Soul from My Footsteps, her witty, heartfelt, and righteous body of work has earned numerous awards. Her 2020 gender equality album for families, All the Ladies, won a GRAMMY Award for “Best Children’s Album.” With FREADOM, Leeds is once again bringing her music to the frontlines, offering support and inspiring music.

    2022 saw the highest number of book bans and attempts to remove or restrict materials since the American Library Association started compiling data 20 years ago. Millions of children are currently losing access to important literature. Book banners primarily target stories by and about people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those exploring Jewish themes. Freedom of expression and the right to access information are fundamental pillars of America’s democracy and FREADOM is Leeds’ message to the world in support of everyone’s First Amendment Rights.

    When the political landscape seems too divisive to make change, I ask myself as a children’s musician, ‘What can I do?’ My frustration and grief often become the catalyst for new music. FREADOM lifts up some of our favorite banned titles and causes some ‘good trouble’ as I reimagine the stories in song form and perform alongside some of the best musicians I know. Please take a stand and join me fighting book bans and protecting the personal freedoms of ALL Americans. We will not be banned!

    FREADOM features Leeds with a world-class cast of musicians, including GRAMMY Award-nominated and McArthur Fellow violinist Regina Carter, three GRAMMY-nominated instrumentalists including guitarist/vocalist Saul Paul, bassist/vocalist Divinity Roxx, pianist/vocalist Cheryl B. Engelhardt; multi-reed player Oran Etkin, among others.

    Leeds said the rising tide of book bans hit remarkably close to home. “As a mother of an 8-year-old daughter who loves picture books, we’ve been following this story very closely as many of our favorite titles have been removed from schools and libraries, particularly in my home state of Florida.”

    Inspired by different children’s books, tracks like “Block Party” take inspiration from neighborly love in Patricia Polacco’s In Our Mothers’ House and “Tango” from And Tango Makes Three, a story about the Central Park Zoo’s beloved penguin family. As a Jewish woman, it was essential for Leeds to bring attention to the fact that books about the Holocaust (Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl and Art Spiegelman’s Maus) are being banned. Mara Rockliff’s and Kyrsten Brooker’s Chik Chak Shabbat inspired the incantatory “Cholent Time.”

    A tribute to Junot Diaz’s Islandborn, the Caribbean-tinged “Inside Your Heart” honors the children of immigrants who learn about their ancestral homeland from stories passed down by their families. The irresistible anthem and a cappella song “Rainbow Flag” is inspired by Rob Sanders’ and Steven Salerno’s Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag.

    “Sing it Out” is Leeds’ homage to Sing a Song: How Lift Every Voice and Sing Inspired Generations, Kelly Starling Lyons’ and Keith Mallett’s moving book about the NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson’s hymn often described as the Black National Anthem. FREADOM closes with “Born That Way,” a sweet ode to gender diversity and following one’s dreams inspired by Marcus Ewert’s and Rex Ray’s 10,000 Dresses.

  • Mauskovic Dance Band Gets the Bug Jar Moving

    Donald Mauskovic, Mano Mauskovic, Marnix Mauskovic, Nico Mauskovic make up the Mauskovic Dance Band. From Amsterdam, they swung through Rochester at the Bug Jar on Tuesday, August 29, part of their late summer US tour. The Mauskovic’s though are, like the Ramones, not really Mauskovic’s and not really related.

    Though this mysteriousness only served to enhance their performance. The who’s, the what’s. the how’s, were not important. The only thing that mattered was the rhythm and the groove, and the Mauskovic’s were doling out heaping helpings of both. The energy emerging from the stage was immediate and the audience was converted to a dancing frenzy in no time. The band may not have been related, but they invited the Rochester crowd to their family gathering in the upside down apartment that is the Bug Jar. The party was underway and soon enough everyone was a Mauskovic.

    Drums, percussion, synthesizers, and effects and echo laden vocals were stitched together by an ever-present and deliciously grooving bass, sometimes doubled up with a second more melodic bass. African, Jamaican and Brazilian sounds all seeped into the mix, bobbing heads, shuffling feet and moving everything in between. At one point supremely deep bass blasts even moved bodies at the cellular level.

    Lyrics, sometimes in English, sometimes not, sometimes improvised, sometimes not, piled more into the mystery. Songs blurred together into never ending strings further dizzying the senses, breaking the crowd down into dancing mounds of putty waiting to be sculpted. When the dust settled though there was no doubt, that was a damn fun time on a Tuesday night in Rochester with the Mauskovic Dance Band.

    In May and June, get ready to journey “Into the Woods” with music and lyrics by the legendary Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. From April 5 to April 14, 2024, this spellbinding musical intertwines beloved fairytales to craft a complex and enchanting narrative that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking.

    “Godspell,” the groundbreaking musical conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak, featuring music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, will grace the stage with its uplifting energy. This timeless story of friendship, community, and spiritual awakening will run for a limited engagement between May 31-June 9, leaving audiences inspired and uplifted.

    Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins” will take flight from July 26 to August 11, 2024, bringing the magic of this beloved tale to life with extraordinary performances, captivating visuals, and unforgettable songs that will have audiences singing along long after the final curtain call.

    As autumn approaches, prepare for laughter and merriment with “The Drowsy Chaperone” from September 27 to October 6, 2024. With music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, and a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, this hilarious and whimsical musical is a delightful palette-cleanser, serving as a reminder that theatre not only is meant to make you think, but to laugh and enjoy the experiences that make us all human.

    Marking the month of October, Fort Salem Theater will present Thornton Wilder’s timeless classic, “Our Town,” from November 8 to November 10, 2024. This poignant exploration of life, love, and the passage of time continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.

    Closing out the year on a festive note, Fort Salem’s favorite original holiday concert revue, “Snow Business,” will spread joy and holiday cheer from December 13 to December 15, 2024. This heartwarming celebration is the perfect way to ring in the holiday season with family and friends.

  • New Recording of Cyndi Lauper’s “Come On Home” to Benefit Mental Health and Drug Addiction Non-Profit

    A new recording of Cyndi Lauper’s “Come On Home” was released on September 1, with proceeds benefitting the Sound Mind Network, a non-profit organization helping those battling mental health issues and drug addiction. The recording features Billboard-charting artist Danni Baylor, with vocals by Cyndi Lauper.

    Written by Lauper in collaboration with Jerome Baylor, “Come On Home” was produced by Sound Mind Network founder Joe Nicolo. Lauper originally released the song on her 1994 greatest hits album Twelve Deadly Cyns… And Then Some. 

    Proceeds from the song’s release will benefit Sound Mind Network’s Foundation and mission to break the stigma surrounding addiction, while helping those in need fulfill their potential.

    “Come On Home” will feature alongside 10 other tracks on a compilation album for the Sound Mind Network. It will include artists such as The Bacon Brothers, Joan Osborne, Kathy Sledge, Taj Mahal and others.

    The more we learn about mental health, the better we are as a society.  This is an issue we have swept under the rug forever. My hope is that ‘Come On Home’ can raise money to eliminate the shame around mental health that has caused a lot of people to needlessly suffer.

    Recorded at Joe’s Garage in Audubon, NJ, the song features Andy Meyer on drums, Jerome Baylor and Mitch Beer on bass, Glenn Hale on keyboard, Brian Fitzy and Bo Rains on guitar, Jay Davidson on horns, and Ryan “Gooch” Nelson on percussion.

  • Blue Note Jazz Club Announces Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration with Cimafunk

    Blue Note Jazz Club is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a week-long residency from Grammy-nominated Afro-Cuban artist Cimafunk.

    Occurring from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the culture and contributions of Hispanic people. From Sept. 26- Oct. 1, Grammy-nominated Afro-Cuban Rockstar Cimafunk will bring his talents to the Blue Note Jazz Club stage. His name refers to his heritage as a “cimarrón,” Cubans of African descent who resisted and escaped slavery, as well as to the essence of his music, which aims to mix classical Cuban rhythms with funk, afrobeat, and hip hop.

    The godfather of Funk George Clinton has referred to Cimafunk as “the one,” and Chucho Valdes credits him for musically “uniting Afro-Cuban and African American.” He has received overwhelming praise touring the U.S. and Europe, making a name for himself as one of today’s great showmen, performing an electric live show with La Tribu, his nine-person band from Havana. His live shows are celebrations of groove and are an unforgettable sonic and bodily experience. His latest album, El Alimento, was nominated at the 2023 GRAMMY Awards for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.

    Since 1981, the Blue Note Jazz Club has been a cultural institution in NYC and one of the premiere jazz clubs in the world. It strives to preserve the history of jazz, and the club practices the foundations of jazz on a nightly basis and carries the torch for the genre in the 21st century.

    The club has been frequented by celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Colin Jost, Zoe Kravitz, and Jon Hamm, and has featured musicians like Robert Glasper, Ron Carter, Pat Metheny, Ms. Lisa Fischer, Christain McBride, Keyon Harrold, Meshell Ndegeocello, and more.

  • Fridays at the Lake 2023 Concludes with Ten Most Wanted and The Schmooze

    Lake George’s annual “Fridays at the Lake” returns in 2023 with music for all ages and tastes, at Shepard Park Amphitheatre. The series starts on July 7 and runs until Sept. 1. The concerts are free to the public, with opening acts taking the stage around 6:00 PM and headliners following up at 7:00 PM.

    The concert series helps to deliver entertaining and high-quality performances to the Capital region. Located at the base of the Adirondacks, Lake George is known for its pristine views and historical importance. Originally home to three military forts, the town now draws visitors from all over the Northeast.

    Along with Fridays at the Lake, there will also be a special benefit concert series for the charity Kelly’s Angels. The organization looks to help children in the capital region who have lost parents or siblings to cancer. “Summer-Lovin” will occur July 12-15 at Shephard Park in Lake George, featuring food trucks, crafts, and fireworks.

    This summer’s final Friday at the Lake at Shepard Park, Canada Street, Lake George hits the stage this Friday, September 1.  Ten Most Wanted is a powerhouse band based out of Saratoga that plays all your favorite classic R&B, Funk, Soul and Rock favorites.  The heart of the band is a soulful rhythm section complimented by four sizzling horns, all laying the foundation for sensational lead vocalists.  Ten Most Wanted’s mission is to provide unrivaled entertainment mixed with top notch arrangements, endless energy and superb musicianship.  The series will end on a high note with Ten Most Wanted.  They will perform from 7:30-9:30.

    The Schmooze open the show, performing from 6:00-7:10.  They have been one of the region’s premier party bands for the past 15 years.  They will get the party started with their versions of rock pop, dance and country cover tunes that will have the crowd dancing and singing along.

    All Fridays at the Lake are free to the public, and food and beverage vendors are on site.

  • The Return of New York EDM: Electric Zoo 2023

    One of New York’s premiere electronic music festivals, Electric Zoo, returns for Labor Day Weekend, with the three day EDM festival inviting over 100,000 people to Randall’s Island Park. The lineup of over 100+ artists across five brand new stage design sets is part of the EZOO 2023 expansion on the festival grounds, while presenting the new theme of HyperSpace, promising a bigger and better immersive experience for this years festival attendees. 

    Electric Zoo 2022

    Electric Zoo Festival originated in 2009 and has become one of the largest music festivals in the electronic dance music community. EZOO brings together a variety of electronic artists from across the globe, including various sub-genres that appeal to fans. For the first time ever, Electric Zoo New York has introduced The MegaMirage, the all new secluded immersive stage as part of the expanded festival grounds. 

    The lineup this year rises as bigger and better than ever with artists such as Galantis, The Chainsmokers, Zedd, Alison Wonderland, Marshmellow, Major Lazor, Tiesto, Chris Lake + FISCHER, Dom Dolla and many more well known acts from across the globe. With 100+ acts, this weekend is bound to leave attendees astonished.

    Not only is Electric Zoo stacked with some of the biggest names in Electronic music. Get excited to see the expansive festival grounds, immersive stage MegaMirage and the immense lineup. EZOO is worth the wait and all about the hype this coming Labor Day Weekend, as it returns to homebase here in New York City.

  • 2023 Riot Fest Lineup: Foo Fighters, The Cure, The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie and Queens of the Stone Age Announced

    Riot Fest has announced its 2023 line-up for the three-day festival. Beginning in 2005, Riot Fest has been regarded as one of the best festivals in the nation, featuring music from a wide variety of rock bands. The featured headliners include: Foo Fighters, The Cure, The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie, and Queens of the Stone Age.

    Other notable bands featured are Turnstile, The Mars Volta, Mr. Bungle, Tegan and Sara, 100 Gecs, The Gaslight Anthem, Death Grips, AFI, and many more. Riot Fest will span across Friday, Sept. 15, Saturday, Sept. 16, and Sunday, Sept. 17. As in previous years, the festival will take place in Chicago’s Douglass Park.

    Originally founded in 2005, Riot Fest is an independent music festival that incorporates the best of punk, rock ‘n’ roll, hip hop, metal, alternative, and just about everything in between. It was named #1 Music Festival by USA Today twice, and was voted Best Music Festival through a poll for Chicago Reader in 2021.

    Riot Fest is known for its music features and its reunions, such as that of iconic bands like Naked Raygun, the Replacements, The Original Misfits, and Jawbreaker. This year will feature the return of carnival rides, freak shows, panel discussions, and even a wedding chapel. In addition, Logan Arcade, a local venue, will be having free vintage arcade games, hosted by Riot Pop!!, Riot Fest’s own brand of nonalcoholic and alcoholic seltzer.

    The festival is easily accessible with Chicago bus and train lines, and is surrounded by diverse neighborhoods with many drink and food locals. Within the festival itself is a variety of food vendors, including vegan and vegetarian options.

    Tickets are available on Riot Fest’s website through the Tixr service. Only three-day passes are currently available, though single-day tickets will be available at a later date. The three-day tickets have a mix of options, such as General Admission, VIP Passes, Deluxe Passes, and Deluxe+ Passes.

  • New Saugerties Venue, The Local, Announces Upcoming Series

    Hudson Valley Live haas announced their first concert series showcasing 15 acts at The Local, Saugerties’ new year-round, multi-arts venue. The series will run from September 20 through December 17.

    Housed in a restored Dutch chapel from the 1800s, The Local recently opened as a space for arts, culture, and community. It began under the guidance of Isabel Soffer and Danny Melnick, co-founders of Hudson Valley Live. As experienced music producers and performing arts professionals, Soffer and Melnick have devoted over 30 years to producing festivals, concerts, and curated arts experiences.

Having a venue in Saugerties has been a dream for Danny and me, and we see it as an incredible opportunity to bring people together through the arts, to encourage musical discovery, and to inspire visitors to spend time in Saugerties.

    The Local’s upcoming concert series will feature something for everyone. Audiences can see world renowned artists such as The Wazumbians, an Afropop group from Ghana (October 7, 8pm), or Troker, a Mexican group blending psych jazz, rock, funk, and traditional Mexican music (November 12, 7pm). 

    Additionally, local Saugerties favorites will take the stage frequently. I’m Your Man: A Birthday Tribute to Leonard Cohen with Robert Burke Warren & Friends will happen on September 30, and the John Street Jam, an in-the-round performance series will feature local folk, blues, bluegrass, and country musicians (November 10, 8pm). Audiences will even have an opportunity to dance the night away at the Silent Disco Dance Party with live DJs (December 9, 8pm).

    Wed., Sept. 20, 7 pm: Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp – A border-defying, big band mix-up performing jazz and kraut rock to West African funk with brass, strings, and powerful lyrics 

    Wed., Sept. 27, 7 pm: Tablao Flamenco – Spanish flamenco with award-winning dancers, vocalists, and guitarists will transform the theater into an intimate nightclub like those found in Andalusia. 

    Sat., Sept. 30, 8 pm: I’m Your Man: A Birthday Tribute to Leonard Cohen with Robert Burke Warren & Friends – Celebrate what would have been The Bard of Montreal’s 89th birthday. 

    Sat., Oct. 7, 8 pm: The Wazumbians – High life music from Ghana, West Africa with deep rhythmic dance grooves.

    Fri., Oct. 13, 8 pm: Trio Messiez w/ Dancers Mariela Franganillo and Guillermo Merlo – This acclaimed Argentinian Tango trio features renowned dancers to accompany their vibrant sound.

    Thurs., Oct. 19, 7 pm: Jazz with Julius Rodriguez –  Multi-instrumentalist and composer Julius Rodriguez is a rising star at the intersection of jazz, soul, gospel, hip-hop, and blues.

    Sat., Oct. 28, 8 pm: Jazz: Allison Miller presents Rivers In Our Veins – Drummer/composer Allison Miller embraces the concept of flow and renewal through an immersive multimedia environmental song cycle. 

    Sat., Nov. 4, 8 pm: Emel – This Woodstock-based, Tunisian-born singer-songwriter and producer layers honeyed vocals with guitars and electronica. 

    Sun., Nov. 5, 5 pm: Jazz with Tim Berne/Hank Roberts/Aurora Neeland – New jazz work, Oceans And, has been deemed “profound, probing, intricate, raw, courageous, mysterious, and thoughtful” by critics. 

    Fri., Nov. 10, 8 pm: The John Street Jam – This long-held Saugerties tradition features Hudson Valley-based musicians performing folk, blues, bluegrass, and country in-the-round. 

    Sun., Nov. 12, 7 pm: Troker – This hot act from Guadalajara, Mexico fuses psych jazz with elements of rock, funk, ska, and traditional Mexican music. 

    Sat., Dec. 2, 8 pm: Bach Cello Suites for Violin – Grammy award-winning violinist, composer, and producer Johnny Gandelsman performs his own take on this classic.

    Sat., Dec. 9, 8 pm: Silent Disco Dance Party – Grab headphones and dance alone or with friends for an incredibly fun experience with live DJs.
