Tedeschi Trucks band made their debut with a ‘Garden Party’ at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on Friday, September 29, with the help of friends Trey Anastasio, Lukas Nelson and Norah Jones. There was some intense rain causing serious flooding around this day, but luckily the show went on.
The performance recalled Derek Trucks sitting in with Phish, just a month prior for the Vermont Flood benefit. And now it looked like New York City would be flooding, but only an outpouring of love and music rained down at MSG this evening.
Lukas Nelson and Promise Of The Real opened up the night with a rocking, bluesy set full of originals including a heartfelt “Georgia” and a thumping “Something Real” to close up their set.
When it was time for the main act, the first reaction was “Boy do they have a large band even without three special guests!” The full Tedeschi Trucks Band played a memorable show with their guests, one that was full of surprises which included “The Seeker” & “Layla” with Trey sitting in, Susan killing it on “Sugaree”, Norah and Susan on “Have a Little Faith in Me”, TTB bangers like “Midnight in Harlem” and “Made up Mind”.
The encore included “A Song For You” with Lukas Nelson and “Soul Sweet Song”. The band brought out the whole crew including Trey, Lukas, & Norah for two Sly and the Family Stone songs including “Sing a Simple Song” and “I Want to Take you Higher,” an incredible ending to a phenomenal night.

Bop Shop Records, an independently-owned record store in Rochester, has announced their upcoming lineup of shows for this fall. The run starts with a trio of jazz legends, Joseph Daley’s Tuba Trio, consisting of Warren Smith, Scott Robinson, and Joseph Daley.
Bop Shop Records opened in the Cobbs Hill neighborhood of Rochester in 1982 with owner Tom Kohn, who spent the 70s working for MXR and Rounder Records, where he collected music from all kinds of genres. The venue hosts jazz, folk, and blues artists at the store, and boasts a collection of over 200,000 records available.
This fall’s lineup will feature Joseph Daley’s Tuba Trio, Preston Reed, Charlie Parr, and Brooklyn’s own Ember Trio. Ember is a collaborative music group that is based in exploration, improvisation, and creativity. The jazz group includes Caleb Wheeler Curtis on alto saxophone, Noah Garabedian on bass, and Vinnie Sperrazza on drums. The group will make their stop at Bop Shop Records on December 16.
Bop Shop Records is excited to welcome Joseph Daley’s Tuba Trio on October 3. The group explores improvisational concepts of Sam Rivers, the famed jazz composer and multi-instrumentalist who accompanied the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Daley dedicated his newest record, The Tuba Trio Chronicles, to the memory of Rivers, his good friend and mentor.

The Wildwoods, a folk-americana trio from Nebraska, have announced an upcoming show at Conkling Hall in Rensselaerville, NY. The group’s newest full length record, Foxfield Saint John, released in February 2023, cultivates a unique and captivating sound to their musicianship.
The Wildwoods is Noah Gose (guitar), Chloe Gose (violin), and Andrew Vaggalis (bass). Hailing from Lincoln, Nebraska, and draw inspiration from artistss such as The Decemberists, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Joni Mitchell, and Gregory Alan Isakov. The group was nominated by the Omaha Arts and Entertainment Awards for Top Americana/Folk Artist in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022, and named as the Lincoln Journal Star’s “Best Band” award in 2022.
The band released their debut album, Sweet Nostalgia, as well as an EP, Birdie & Goose, in 2017, and quickly established a niche in their local music scene. The group’s newest record, Foxfield Saint John, was followed by “Footprints on the Floor,” a new track released in July.

The Zombies, one of the most celebrated bands of the early ‘60s British Invasion and pioneers of the later “orch pop” movement, came to Woodstock to showcase Hung Up On A Dream, an entertaining new documentary about their star-crossed career and ultimate critical resurrection directed by Robert Schwartzman.

One of the highlights of the always star-studded 24th annual Woodstock Film Festival, the event took place before a sell-out crowd at the recently renovated Bearsville Theater. Rod Argent, the band’s visionary keyboardist founder and principle songwriter, was joined by the still choir-boy voiced Colin Blunstone for a post-screening Q&A and a rousing five-song duet performance.
Though The Zombies reached the top of the charts in 1964 with their debut single “She’s Not There” and a strong follow-up in 1965, “Tell Her No,” theirs is a story of old school showbiz mismanagement/exploitation followed, years later, by a critical reassessment and successful reunion. Earning countless millions via aggressive touring and recording at the start of their careers, the barely out of their teens bandmembers would each be forced to survive on a paltry 10 British pounds a week. That was until they recorded and broke up before the release of their 1968 psych/pop masterwork, Odessey and Oracle. By the time its single, “Time of the Season,” topped the charts, the band was well over and done with. And three decades would pass before they would make their triumphant return.
The documentary begins with a rapid-fire mélange of YouTube videos where new generations of music lovers wax poetic about their love of The Zombies, and especially their orch pop motherlode, Odessey and Oracle.
Thankfully, this documentary has none of the forced drama and cliched stupidity (drug ODs/inter-band incest/ songwriter royalty battles) popularized by VH-1’s “Behind the Music.” Perhaps that’s because The Zombies all seem like remarkably well-adjusted suburbanites with great senses of humor (especially the always hilarious Blunstone).
After the breakup, keyboardist Rod Argent would go on to immediate success with his surname titled band of “Hold Your Head Up” fame. Singer Blunstone would become an insurance agent and then emerge as a solo singer – first with a new name, Neil McArthur, before returning to his own for another classic disc, the orchestra-swaddled One Year, produced by Argent and the Zombies’ other great songwriter, bassist Chris White. Drummer Hugh Grundy and guitarist Paul Atkinson would go on to working in car sales and computers respectively before serving as beloved record company A&R executives responsible for kickstarting the careers of bands like ABBA, Queen and Bruce Hornsby. In the immediate aftermath of the success of “Time of the Season,” the rip-offs continued with two bands of “fake” Zombies touring the U.S., one even including two musicians who would later go on to found ZZ Top.
Filmicly, the documentary benefits from clips from the band’s many early appearances on television shows like Hullabaloo, American Bandstand and BBC’s Juke Boy Jury. The latter is where Beatle George Harrison dubbed their debut single “marvelous” and helped it race up the charts.
Schwartzman does a solid job of covering all the bases on the band’s rise, fall and rebirth. The latter begins to gather steam in the ‘80s and ‘90s as the band’s Odessey and Oracle becomes revered among hipster tastemakers like Beck, who would go on to cover their “Beechwood Park.” It reaches critical mass in 2008 when the band reunites for a 40th Anniversary concert recreating the album, which will be followed by several tours and their ultimate enshrinement in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Tom Petty, Paul Weller, Post Malone, Haim, Harry Styles and Dave Grohl are all featured in the documentary sharing their love of the band, with Foo’s frontman calling Odessey his “favorite all-time album.”

Once again, there is a lot of humor as Argent, White, Grundy and Blunstone tell their story, with the lead singer getting the most laughs. Famously, Argent’s artist roommate Terry Quirk spelled “odyssey” wrong on the album cover painting, but the label was too cheap to re-press it. They were also too cost-conscious to let Blunstone do another take to fix a lyrical flub in “Tell Her No” or to provide money for a stereo mix of Odessey (Argent and White paid the $1,000 from their songwriting royalties). Emotions come to the fore as they recall their final performance with guitarist Paul Atkinson at a 2004 reunion. Suffering from terminal cancer, Atkinson would play with a morphine drip and pass three weeks after the show.
The film concludes with a duet performance of Blunstone’s “Caroline Goodbye” from his Argent/White produced album, One Year, with the obviously music-loving director Schwartzman on acoustic guitar.
Following the screening, Lizzie Vann, the British-born owner/architect of the recently revived Bearsville Theater, took to the stage to introduce Argent and Blunstone and joke about her earlier meeting with the jet-lagged duo over breakfast.

Argent and Blunstone performed a rousing four-song set beginning with a super slowed down and extra bluesy “She’s Not There” and concluding with an extended version of “Time of the Season,” with Argent rolling out long legato solos like a rock-n-roll Art Tatum. The second tune, “You Could Be My Love,” is from their wonderful 2023 album, Different Game. In the film, Blunstone discusses his rigorous three-times daily practice regiment. It came to the fore here, as he is truly in better voice than ever, something remarkable for a man in his 70s.
Radio Woodstock’s amiable Justin Foy then took to the stage to conduct a Q&A. In it, the duo spoke of the importance of Elvis in their decision to live the life of musicians. “He was a creature from another universe and I vowed at my first listen that I would form a band like Elvis” said Argent. When asked how they felt about covers like Santana’s version of “She’s Not There,” Argent commented that he always felt his songs had an “understated Latin feel,” while Blunstone added: “It’s never been a problem for me, it’s a really compliment.” As for the tendency to remix and reissue classic albums by The Beatles and their own Odessey and Oracle, Argent added: “We’re not precious about it at all. Art is a work in progress. We’re always delighted when someone will spend their time to improve it.”
As for the best moment in their career, Blunstone said it was the 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame event. “I didn’t know all the words but I got to jam ‘All The Young Dudes’ with Def Leppard, Brian May and Ian Hunter.”
Foy closed the evening by twisting another tune out of the sleepy duo, a spirited version of “This Will Be Our Year” from Odessey and Oracle. With a documentary like this hitting streaming platforms and theaters and their new album, this may be another big year for The Zombies.
MasterVoices will open its 2023-24 season this November at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, with three performances of The Frogs.
MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) was founded in 1941 by legendary American choral conductor Robert Shaw. Under the artistic direction of Tony Award winner Ted Sperling since 2013, the group is known for its versatility and a repertoire that ranges from choral masterpieces and operas in concert to operettas and musical theater. Season concerts feature a volunteer chorus of 100+ members from all walks of life alongside a diverse roster of world-class soloists from across the musical spectrum, including Julia Bullock, Dove Cameron, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Renée Fleming, John Holiday, Jennifer Holliday, Norm Lewis, Victoria Clark, and Kelli O’Hara.
Under Sperling’s direction the group has created cross–disciplinary collaborations with such diverse creative minds as legendary lyricist Sheldon Harnick, Vogue Editor-at-Large Hamish Bowles, fashion designer Zac Posen, Silk Road visual artist Kevork Mourad, illustrator Manik Choksi, stage designer Doug Fitch, and choreographers Doug Varone and Andrew Palermo. Roger Rees was the group’s Artistic Associate from 2003–2015, and in 2021 the group received a New York Emmy Award nomination and a Drama League Award nomination for its multi-genre digital concert production of Adam Guettel’s Myths and Hymns.
Known for its presentation of lesser-known artistic treasures such as Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha, and Tchaikovsky’s Maid of Orleans, the group has received recent accolades for productions of rarely-heard works such as last season’s New York City premiere of Sheldon Harnick’s full English translation of Bizet’s Carmen, Lady in the Dark by Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin, Victor Herbert’s Babes in Toyland, the Gershwins’ Let ‘Em Eat Cake, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents’s Anyone Can Whistle, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe. They also commission and premiere new works; recent examples include choral works by Ricky Ian Gordon, Marisa Michelson, Tariq Al-Sabir, and Randall Eng.
As one of the country’s first interracial and interfaith choruses, MasterVoices (as The Collegiate Chorale) performed at the opening of the United Nations and has sung and recorded under the batons of esteemed conductors including Serge Koussevitzky, Arturo Toscanini, and Leonard Bernstein, among others. It has been engaged by top-tier orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic, and has appeared at the Verbier and Salzburg Festivals.
MasterVoices opens its 2023-24 season on November 3 and 4 at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, with three performances of a concert staging of Stephen Sondheim and Burt Shevelove’s The Frogs, as adapted by Nathan Lane. Ted Sperling, celebrating his tenth season as MasterVoices’ Artistic Director, directs and conducts the 120–member MasterVoices chorus, an 18-piece orchestra, and an all-star cast of MasterVoices favorites. In addition to the two performances initially announced for Saturday, November 4, MasterVoices has added a third performance on Friday, November 3, at 8 PM.
The boisterously hilarious yet poignant musical was inspired by the ancient Aristophanes play of the same name. With the world at war and civilization imperiled, Dionysos, god of wine and theater, feels something drastic must be done. He journeys to the underworld with his servant Xanthias to find the world’s best playwright, who will inspire and save mankind. Along the way, the two travelers encounter many well-known mythic characters. This musical presentation of Aristophanes’ comedy was “freely adapted” by Burt Shevelove and Stephen Sondheim in 1974 and “even more freely adapted” by Nathan Lane and Sondheim for its 2004 staging at Lincoln Center Theater. The script will be further adapted by Nathan Lane for MasterVoices’ concert performances.
The Frogs has a rich and varied score with a substantial role for the chorus; it includes one of Sondheim’s most beautiful love songs, “Ariadne.”

You can affect a change. And in The Frogs, that is Dionysos’ dream– to go down to Hades and bring back this great writer. This project was nominated for a Drama League Award, and featured over 100 artists collaborating remotely, including Renée Fleming, Take 6, Jennifer Holliday and Julia Bullock. Now that live performances are back, Maestro Sperling is supervising national and international productions of My Fair Lady, The King and I, and Fiddler on the Roof. He has symphonic engagements in the U.S. and Europe and continues to teach at NYU, conducting three different orchestras and training the next generation of Broadway musicians and conductors.
Sperling has conducted multiple concerts for PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center, the American Songbook Series at Lincoln Center, and the Lyrics and Lyricists series at the 92nd Street Y. He conducted Audra McDonald in a double bill of La Voix Humaine and the world premiere of Send: Who Are You? I Love You? at the Houston Grand Opera. He won the 2005 Tony and Drama Desk Awards for his orchestrations of Adam Guettel’s The Light in the Piazza, for which he was also Music Director.
In addition to his directing work with MasterVoices, Mr. Sperling’s work as a stage director includes the world premieres of four critically acclaimed original musicals Off-Broadway—including The Other Josh Cohen and See What I Wanna See—and a noted production of Lady in the Dark at the Prince Theater in Philadelphia, starring Andrea Marcovicci. He graduated summa cum laude from Yale University, and received the Faculty Prize at The Juilliard School. He made his Broadway stage debut as Wallace Hartley in Titanic and appeared as Steve Allen in the finale of Season Two of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

Foo Fighters have announced the 2024 Everything Or Nothing At All Tour, in support of their 11th full length record But Here We Are. The tour kicks off with two shows at NYC’s Citi Field on July 17 and 19.
With singles “Rescued” and “Under You,” Foo Fighters acclaimed album But Here We Are was released on June 2. It debuted at #1 on UK charts, marking the group’s sixth official #1 album. But Here We Are is the group’s first release since the passing of their longtime beloved drummer, Taylor Hawkins in March 2022.
Foo Fighters’ 2024 tour begins with two shows at New York’s Citi Field on July 17 and 19, and continues with shows at legendary stadiums, such as Boston’s Fenway Park, San Diego’s Petco Park, and Seattle’s T-Mobile Park. The tour will see support from Pretenders, The Hives, Mammoth WVH, Amyl and The Sniffers, Alex G, and L7 on various dates.

On Friday, September 29, RBNX released Nothing Here Is Yours and their first release as signed artists with Patient Zero Records, where RBNX explore the hardships that humanity faces but often neglects to discuss.
The 10-track LP includes previously released singles, “Jah Is Dead” and “World To Burn” which premiered on In Effect Hardcore and Scene Point Blank. Nothing Here Is Yours serves as a musical testament to RBNX’s journey through life and its hardships. It bears the weight of loss and grief, themes that are very important to each member and their personal experiences. This album is not merely a collection of songs but a vivid portrayal of the band’s raw live energy and unwavering dedication to their craft.

For the last 10 years, RBNX’s unique blend of punk, hardcore, ska, and metal has helped the band establish themselves as relentless DIY pillars in the Northeast punk/hardcore community. Formed by lifelong friends Mike Dietz, Phil Bartsch, and Kyle Behnken, their highly anticipated second LP, Nothing Here Is Yours, was released via Patient Zero Records, building upon the band’s first LP, Surrounded By Sin.

Albany Symphony, a two-time Grammy Award winner, will present a first-of-its-kind Film Music Festival, made to celebrate music made for media. The festival will be held from October 5 to October 9 at venues such as Albany’s Palace Theatre, Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, University at Albany Performing Arts Center, and MVP Arena.
Headlining the innovative new festival are two concerts featuring the Albany Symphony. On Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7:30pm at the Palace, David Alan Miller and the musicians of the Symphony kick off the 2023-2024 season with Soundtrack New York: Musical Scenes from a Cinematic State.
Inspired by the portrayal of the Empire State in film, and by the incredible composers who call New York home, this musical tour includes classic themes including George Gershwin’s Concerto in F featuring pianist Kevin Cole and Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story suite, as well as music from iconic NY films King Kong (Max Steiner), Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Henry Mancini) and Taxi Driver (Bernard Herrmann). Music from contemporary NY composers include Brooklynite Tamar-kali’s work from Mudbound, and Hudson Valley resident Howard Shore’s sweeping landscapes from Lord of the Rings.
On Sunday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 at the Palace, the Albany Symphony presents Video Games Live! An immersive concert experience featuring exclusive orchestral arrangements of music from some of the most popular video games of all time. Musician, composer and creator of Video Games Live Tommy Tallarico and his band will join the Symphony for this performance led by guest conductor Emmanuel Fratianni. Featured video games include Final Fantasy, Halo, Skyrim, Kingdom Hearts, The Last of Us, Undertake, League of Legends and many more.
Albany Symphony teams up with the Empire State Youth Orchestra for a free community concert on Monday, Oct. 9 at 3pm at MVP Arena, in a special event presented by the Albany County – MVP Innovation Partnership. Together, the orchestras will perform music from Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and more—a perfect family activity for the day since many kids and families are off on holiday.
Albany Symphony’s Film Music Festival also includes a special Hollywood Cabaret with pianist Kevin Cole on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 7:30pm at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. Audience members will be seated on stage to join Cole for a night of classic themes from the Silver Screen. Please note that capacity is limited.
On Saturday, Oct. 7, the Symphony and partners at the New York State Writers Institute present Scoring Work in Show Business, a free and open-to-the-public symposium at the University at Albany Performing Arts Center featuring panelists working in the industry. Speakers include producer Nathaniel Reichman, composers Gregory Polzak and Troy Herion, Albany County Film Commissioner Debby Goedeke, and Youth FX Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director Bhawin Suchak. The Symposium runs from 10am to 2pm, with lunch provided.

On a day when floods shut down the subways and water appeared in places where water should not, IDK lifted Irving Plaza above the flood line and delivered for all of his fans that braved the torrential rains that drenched New York City to make it to the show. On Friday, September 29th, IDK made the fourth stop of his F65 Tour at Irving Plaza in New York City.
The show featured three opening acts, the first being 18-year-old R&B singer Luna Elle, followed by Atlanta Rapper Reese Laflare and lastly Dreamville’s own, Lute. Reese and Lute each played their respective Revenge of the Dreamers Tracks, “Costa Rica,” and “Under The Sun.”

IDK came out sporting a racing helmet before switching over to his baseball cap. Throughout the show IDK would switch his headgear to match his different albums. The performance was a creative mix between Jazz and Hip-Hop with the crowd going from swaying to moshpit within the blink of an eye.
