Opener Joy Oladokun kicked off the night with her mix of R&B, folk, and rock tunes. Her influences as a queer woman of color has given her powerful lyrics and connective albums a new meaning. Joy converted new fans that night as she spent her set connecting and singing with people about mental health.

Noah later took the stage with his whimsical visuals and groovy band members. The group first played the popular hit “All My Love” which immediately had fans hyped up. Despite this being the Stick Season tour he brought back his roots when playing classics off his old EP Cape Elizabeth. These included “Glue Myself Shut,” and “Maine.”

    Addressing Mental Health

Noah is no stranger to mental health issues. In fact he not only writes about it in his songs but even discusses it on stage with countless people listening. That night at Artpark he talked with everyone how important therapy is and being okay with asking for help. Noah helps break the stigmatization around metal health issues and alcohol abuse. After his heavy hitting speech he sang “Growing Sideways” which examines the distraught feeling of being stuck.

The artist took a moment on stage to play some acoustic songs which brought an ease over the crowd. Fans really became excited though when Noah played several tracks off his unreleased deluxe edition of Stick Season including “No Complaints” and “Dial Drunk.”

This night was special for Noah Kahan considering it was the first time he was playing certain songs live and the start of a tour that is about to sweep the nation. His music discography has already left a mark on the internet space but his live show is what will make people coming back for more.

  • Five Can’t-Miss Shows in Rochester Area This June

In Rochester, there are nine days in June that are, for many, the richest nine days of live music on the calendar, named the Rochester International Jazz Fest. But we’ll get to that in a separate post. There’s plenty of other live music to go around this month, so let’s get right to it!

June 8, Deer Tick at Lincoln Hill Farms

It’s summer, outdoor shows are king, and most of the outdoor venues are not in Rochester proper. So excuse us if we jump a little bit outside Monroe County here. Lincoln Hill Farms is a great little spot in Canandaigua, and with Dan Small Presents picking up the booking duties their calendar is filling out nicely. One show that has caught our particular attention is this little rock band that could from Providence, Deer Tick. They haven’t played these parts in a bit. Combining superb songwriting with reckless barroom energy, they’ll show you a great time. Rafay Rashid will open the show.

The music will start at 630pm and tickets are $30.

June 10, Surprise Chef at Photo City Music Hall

Australia is exporting some fantastic music these days, across most any genre you can think of. Surprise Chef, a quintet out of Melbourne, is churning out some seriously good instrumental soul-funk like you’d expect from deep in Brooklyn or deep in the South. Catch their twist on things in their Rochester debut. Alanna Royale will open the show.

Music gets started around 8pm and tickets are $15.

June 11, The Wood Brothers at Perinton Center Park Amphitheater

If you’ve seen live music at the Perinton Amphitheater before it was likely of the free community concert variety. But this year Rochester Events is trying it out as a big show venue, starting with Collective Soul on June 1. A week and a half later Rochester faves The Wood Brothers will grace the stage. Ever since a couple of raucous barn burners at the aforementioned Rochester International Jazz Fest some Junes ago, they’ve made Rochester a regular stop. Needless to say, many barns have been burned. They are returning again with another excellent new album in tow. Shovels and Rope open up this time around.

Show starts at 7pm and tickets are $39.50.

June 26, David Murray and Kahlil El’Zabar at Bop Shop Records

Jazz Fest is not the only time of year to catch world-class jazz in Rochester. And even during Jazz Fest, it isn’t the only place to catch world-class jazz. Case in point, Bop Shop Records, one of the best places to catch adventurous music all year round, is bringing back the great Kahlil El’Zabar, who has appeared there so many times, he must be dubbed the Rusted Root of the Bop Shop (iykyk). This time around he is joined by the legendary tenor saxophonist, and his friend of over 40 years, David Murray. Together they are called the Golden Seas Duo and this is a golden opportunity to have your mind blown.

Show will get started at 8pm and tickets are $25/$30 dos.

June 30, Budos Band at Photo City Music Hall

Tying this whole post up in a neat little bow, here is another instrumental soul band at Photo City Music Hall, another Jazz Fest alumnus, and another great jazz show butting up against Jazz Fest. Budos Band will probably start up late enough to come check it out after your Jazz Fest fun though, so we’d suggest partaking in both. Budos Band is on the supreme Daptone Records label and is one of the best things on the label. Heavy, funky, soulful, and as with everything else on this list, not to be missed! Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor get the show started.

Doors open at 7pm and tickets are $26.

  • In Focus: Andrew McMahon Delivers Colorful, Sold-Out Performance at Town Ballroom in Buffalo

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness wrapped up a two-week east coast tour with a sold out performance at Town Ballroom in Buffalo on Wednesday, May 24.  The tour, which also featured stops in Syracuse and Albany, was in support of the band’s latest release Tilt at the Wind No More

Few in the music industry today tout the resume that Andrew McMahon has.  His original rise to fame came as the lead singer of the early 2000’s emo rock band Something Corporate.  In 2004 McMahon formed Jack’s Mannequin, and later in 2014 would begin Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, a project that continues today.  All along the way, McMahon has crafted stellar piano-rock tracks and has amassed a large and devoted following of fans who flock to his live concerts.  His current band features Bob Anderson (guitar), Zac Clark (keyboards), Jay McMillian (drums) and Mikey Wagner (bass guitar).

Early arriving fans on Wednesday night were treated to an opening performance by Griffin William Sherry.  Known for his work with independent-folk rock band The Ghost of Paul Revere, Sherry delighted the audience with a set of acoustic folk tracks.  At times, Sherry’s strong vocals channeled singer/song writers such as Nathaniel Rateliff and Chris Stapleton.

    andrew mcmahon buffalo

Up next were The Unlikely Candidates, from Fort Worth, Texas.  To describe their set as high energy would be an understatement.  From the cryptic opening guitar rift of “Sunshine” to the final notes of set closer “Novocaine”, singer Kyle Morris took captive hold of the audience.  Morris strutted the stage, leapt in the air,  twirled his microphone, at times throwing it high in the air before catching it.  Morris would lean in close over the audience, locking eyes with those in the front row, never missing a lyrical beat.  A mid-set cover of the A-ha classic “Take on Me” had the showroom bursting with energy. The band was sure to gain many new fans following their set.

    andrew mcmahon buffalo

Finally, it was time for Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.  The standing room only club was packed elbow to elbow with little room to maneuver, with the crowd in eager anticipation of the band’s arrival.  Once the houselights dimmed, a lone spotlight shone into the crowd.  The light illuminated McMahon, who was standing in the back of the club, and began performing the slow moving, reflective “Nobody Tells You When You’re Young”.  McMahon made his way slowly to the stage, providing brief and intimate performances for those whose path he encountered.  Once arriving to the stage, McMahon was joined by his bandmates who immediately launched into “The Mixed Tape,” a familiar fan favorite from McMahon’s Jack’s Mannequin days.

    andrew mcmahon buffalo

While the music was at the forefront, the spectacle of an Andrew McMahon performance was not missing on this night.  McMahon donned a colorful, light up cape during “Stars”.  He crowd surfed while riding an inflatable llama, making it all the way to the top tier of the club.  During “Synesthesia”, McMahon brought a multi-colored parachute into the crowd, singing the song’s chorus from underneath.  In all, McMahon and his band would roll through a 23 song set, spanning over twenty years worth of music.  It was a memorable evening for those in attendance, one that would be sure to have fans clamoring for a return performance in the near future.

  • Post Malone Returns to the States for ‘If Ya’ll Weren’t Here I’d Be Crying’ Tour

Diamond-selling, pop superstar Post Malone will return to the United States with another leg of the “If Y’all Weren’t Here, I’d Be Crying” Tour. This announcement follows his highly successful trek across the U.S. and Canada last year and another stop in Europe for his long-awaited “Twelve Carat Tour.” However, the 10-time Grammy nominee returns to America to give fans his signature exhilarating performance, along with music from his upcoming album as well as fan-favorites in a completely reimagined show.

Produced by Live Nation, the 24-date run kicks off in Noblesville, IN, on July 8, and includes a stop at Darien Lake Amphitheater in Darien Center, NY, on Monday, July 17, 2023.

“I love y’all so very much and I’m so excited to get out and do some more shows for y’all. Help me put a baby through college and come on out. Some cool new production, new songs, and a very very handsome man up on stage. Sending love to you and yours.” Says Post Malone.

Along with the tour announcement, Post has revealed the released date for his long-awaited fifth full-length album. Titled, Austin, the project will arrive on July 28, with Post releasing the single “Mourning,” in anticipation.

Tickets for the tour can be found on the Live Nation’s website, although the tour will also offer a variety of different VIP packages and experiences for fans to take their concert experience to the next level. Packages vary but include premium tickets, access to the World Pong League VIP Lounge, exclusive VIP gift items and more. For more information, visit vipnation.com.

  • Won’t He Do It: Conway Bares All in Drumwork Debut

For those unaware of the Machine – Conway defied the odds. Merely a man, he proves his machine-like mechanisms on every track with grimey lyrics, references and punchlines. After overcoming gunshot wounds to his head and neck that left the right side of his face paralyzed – he became arguably the most prolific illustrator of our generation. This is Griselda Records.

Griselda Records x Fashion Rebels (GxFR) really started to catapult the competition when they turned adversity into prosperity. Once Westside Gunn put out his first tape, Flyest in Charge – he proved that he meant business. The beautiful part about it is Westside Gunn only started rapping to propel his blood brother Conway the Machine – who was incapacitated at the time.

Conway the Machine and Westside Gunn derive their names from their fallen Buffalo soldier – Machine Gunn Black. The rate at which this collective puts out projects is a direct indicator as to why they are successful.  Conway’s latest release, Won’t He Do It symbolizes a turning of the guild. This is his first release under his independent label – Drumwork Music Group. Now does this mean there is a riff between Griselda members? Absolutely not. Westside Gunn conducts business so masterfully that the original trio – WSG, Conway and Benny the Butcher now own and operate their own record labels.

Best New York Rap Reigns from Buffalo

Won’t He Do It contains a great balance of songs for old and new fans. Altogether, there are contemplative, hyphy, reflective and bouncy types of songs. Also, it has been rumored that this collection of songs is only Side A.

Upon making this album, Conway the Machine flew to Denver and recorded from 12 to 12 every day. Within the throws of his creative process, he compiled six albums worth of material. Recording music is like photography in the sense that you create hundreds of pieces of content only to choose the very best few to present to the public.

Furthermore, it feels like there is purposely less depth within the subject matter of this album. For Griselda artists – this is warranted because they consistently tap deep within the psyche of their audience with mind-altering compositions. It is nice to have a balance of pump-up tunes, classic tracks and songs dedicated to legends like Jay-Z and Kanye.

“Everything about his delivery makes me wanna keep paying attention.”

    Quarters [Quote @2:36]

The particular line above resonated with me because it emphasizes the importance of fine-tuning all moving parts to sustain a profitable and well-oiled machine. Creating something is only 20% of the battle.

    Man v. Machine

Nonetheless, hip-hop connoisseurs often refer to a track that shares the same title as the album as a, “Title Track.” The title track on this tape* truly bares all. It sets the tone for the types of blended wavelengths found throughout this entire album. Therefore, this track symbolizes the album as a whole because it displays vulnerability.

Lastly, this album cements a groundbreaking first step in the solidification of Drumwork Music Group. Not only that, but it is the first time Conway has felt comfortable enough to display his face on the album cover. Couple that with wonderful production, top tier rollout/promotion and an absolute banger of a verse from Sauce Walka and you got yourself a downright enjoyable listening experience.

Key Tracks: Super Bowl, Monogram, Kanye

  • Andy Frasco & The U.N. Release Uniting LGBTQ+ Video “You Do You”

Just in time for Pride month, LA’s Andy Frasco & The U.N. have announced the release of their eagerly awaited new album, L’Optimist, on Friday, August 11th. Today, they have premiered the release of the ebullient first single, “You Do You,” with a hilarious music video to accompany it.

As a much-beloved live outfit renowned for unbridled improvisation, audience interaction, surprising covers, special guests, and animated antics unlike any other, Andy Frasco & The U.N. is unlike no other. Frasco’s sixth studio album L’Optimist is the most hopeful and enthusiastic collection thus far in his career.

The upcoming release now sees Frasco continuing to develop as a songwriter, band leader, and human being, his exploratory spirit giving way to something more firmly grounded yet no less adventurous. Having built a still-expanding career on forward motion, Andy Frasco remains positive in his determination to keep on keeping on, pushing himself and his music to grow and improve with every passing day.

“‘You Do You’ is basically a call to arms to myself,” Frasco says about the single. “Like, what is success? We built success through being outlaws and being ourselves. I did it my own way and it worked out for the best, I think. Could we have been way more successful if I just conformed? Maybe, but that’s boring. It sounds like cheating in a race and I’m not trying to cheat. I want to do it my way. Hopefully I’ll look back when I’m 80 and realize that, like Frank Sinatra, I did it my way.”

Andy Frasco & The U.N. Release Uniting LGBTQ+ Video “You Do You”

A testament to Frasco’s wide-ranging influences and boundless energy, L’Optimist sees the magnetic frontman continuing to chart his path of self-exploration and personal discovery through increasingly introspective lyricism and musical adventure. The album sees Frasco fully in command of his craft, more comfortable and confident than ever before, his notorious party-animal persona giving way to a wiser, but no less enthusiastic, artist and band leader.

Andy Frasco & The U.N. Release Uniting LGBTQ+ Video “You Do You”

Frasco once again challenged himself to explore difficult lyrical terrain, spanning relationships and chronic depression, empathy and alienation, inspired in part by his first real girlfriend. Songs like the deeply moving “Iowa Moon” touch on matters of the heart and mental health, emotional struggle and the sheer vulnerability of the human experience, all relayed through a wildly eclectic approach navigating funk, jazz, surf rock, blues, swing, gospel, reggae, exotica, and more with horn-blasted positivity and soulful power.

Andy Frasco & The U.N. Release Uniting LGBTQ+ Video “You Do You”

“With so much bad news in the world, why not try to figure out a way to get out of the darkness,” Frasco says. “We’re not going to be able to change the world, but at least we can change the mind state we have moving forward. We can at least help the process along by being optimistic that the future will turn itself around. And if everyone changes their mind state about the future, then maybe we can change the world.”

In the meantime, Frasco will spend the summer traveling America on a wide-ranging itinerary that features headline dates, top-billed festival appearances, and an eagerly awaited double bill supporting Slightly Stoopid set for August 13th at Morrison, CO’s famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Additional dates will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
